Lee Marquis, Editor

Welcome...What did the Romans ever do for us? If you had asked that question to the late Jack Elsden Tuffs, the founder of the Wanstead Historical Society, he may have told you that the Romans had left Wanstead with a great mystery that has spanned generations For despite many Roman finds in the area and despite Jack's best efforts, conclusive proof of the location of a Roman villa, long thought to have been sited in Wanstead park, has eluded all those who have taken up the search

The Wanstead Parklands Community Project (WPCP) have been at the forefront of archaeological work in the park since 2005 They have utilised a wide range of techniques and cutting-edge technology to further their understanding of the area and to carry out their own search for the Roman buildings On pages 12-13, the WPCP exclusively reveal to readers of this publication two possible sites in Wanstead Park where the elusive Roman villa is now believed to have once stood, based on all the evidence and research they have conducted

Wanstead park is clearly rich in history and contains, beneath its often dense vegetation, important glimpses into the past It is the same vegetation, along with the plentiful lakes and varied terrain, which also gives us our diverse wildlife populations One such animal that thrives in Wanstead is the bat, which is the subject of a presentation organised by the Wren Conservation and Wildlife Group this month (see page 18) Given their size and nocturnal habits, bats can be difficult to spot, save for fleeting movements in the darkness An illustrated talk in the comfort of Wanstead House will therefore be an ideal opportunity to find out more about these fascinating creatures

When it comes to engaging youngsters in natural history lessons, however, nothing can beat learning in the field and hands-on experiences With the upcoming launch of a nature club for children (see page 7), this is exactly what will be on offer – an opportunity to get kids interested in learning about – and caring for – the local environment

Improvement works on Jubilee Pond in Wanstead Flats are expected to begin in the autumn following the outcome of a public consultation, which asked how a compensation package totalling £170k should be spent The money, which will be used to reinforce the pond's clay liner and improve public access, will be paid to the City of London Corporation by the Metropolitan Police as compensation for using the Flats as a security base during the Olympic Games

The Save Wanstead Flats campaign, which opposes development on the Flats, decided last month that it

will now focus on monitoring the impact of the base, with the aim of preventing any similar use in the

future The group are also organising a community picnic on 10 June at the site, prior to police occupation

Small Charity with big aimsMembers of the Wanstead Society – an independent organisation that works to improve the local area – have voted in favour of becoming a Small Charity "This means we are able to apply for sources of funding which had previously not been available to us, for projects that will benefit the community," explains the Society's chairman Scott Wilding The Society, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, will hope to use this change in legal status to allow them to increase the work they do in the area

A team of staff, students and parents from Forest School in Snaresbrook are aiming to break the world record for the furthest distance covered on one treadmill by a mixed team of 12 in a 24 hour period The record attempt, which is planned for 4 July, will raise money for the school's Olympic scholarship fund, giving a child from one of the five Olympic boroughs the opportunity to attend Forest School The current record – set in 2010 – stands at 42273km Local businesses are invited to sponsor the event –call 020 8509 6545

Mosaic of Wanstead Park wins UCL art prize

Archaeologist and Wanstead Parklands Community Project member Dr Rob Wiseman has been awarded a runner-up prize in University College London's annual 'Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research' competition Dr Wiseman created a

mosaic of Wanstead Park made up of modern and historical images of the area "At first glance, each piece might appear to have nothing to do with the others, but close examination reveals points of connection, and eventually a whole landscape emerges," explains Rob

'Rat run' petition gathers pace amid road safety concerns

Residents in Wanstead have started an online petition against the use of Wellington Road and Nelson Road as a ‘rat run’ by motorists avoiding the main traffic route along Hermon Hill A total of 48 signatures have been collected so far, along with several comments

raising concerns over traffic speed along the residential roads The issue has been raised before, but the council decided that no traffic calming measures were required A traffic counter has since been used to assess the current situation To view the petition, visit bit.ly/wnpetition

In 1715, workmen laying out an avenue of trees in Wanstead Park came upon a Roman mosaic pavement. Adam Holt, gardener to

Sir Richard Child, the owner of the estate, later described it thus to Sir Richard’s neighbour, Smart Lethieullier: “There was a border about a foot broad that went round it, composed of red dice, about three-quarters of an inch square, within which were several ornaments, and in the middle the figure of a man riding upon some beast and holding something in his hands”. Around the edge were: “several borders of wreathed work and ornaments, as are usual in these kinds of pavements”. Holt said that its size was about 20 feet by 16 feet.

Lethieullier was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and it is only to this happy chance that we possess any information about this

discovery at all In 1735 and 1746 Lethieullier wrote three letters to be read out during the society’s meetings, in which he described the finding of the mosaic and other antiquities in the park

An estimated 1,500 Roman pavements have been found in Britain since the 17th century Sadly, the great majority of these have been lost to posterity and, in the case of the Wanstead pavement, Lethieullier recounts that: “It was immediately destroyed by digging holes through it the owner of it having no great taste for things of that nature” By the 1730s there had been further alterations to the gardens, and Lethieullier said that: “The whole is now obliterated, and the face of the ground much changed”

The fact that a mosaic had been found in Wanstead Park was always remembered, but its location was

not It was local amateur historian Jack Elsden Tuffs who first applied his mind seriously to the clues contained in Lethieullier’s letters Lethieullier had stated that the pavement was located “upon an easy declivity fronting the south” which was “a small distance” north of “a well”, which had since been “absorbed in a great pond” Also, it was about 300 yards north of “ruins of foundations” near the park pales which he also took to be Roman

Tuffs realised that, in the absence of any clue as to where the “well” or avenue had been, the only remaining reference point was the line of the old park pales, or boundary fence Wanstead Park formerly took in the northern part of what is now the Aldersbrook estate, so the pales ran well to the south of the present boundary Tuffs saw that a line drawn parallel to the pales at a distance of 300 yards passes just north of Perch Pond for most of its length, then down through its north-western corner and across the dam into Heronry Pond Clearly, he reasoned, the pavement must have lain somewhere very close to that line The criterion of being “upon an easy declivity fronting the south” seemed best met by the area north of Perch Pond at its western end The park authorities permitted Tuffs to dig a number of small pits in this area and he did indeed uncover a variety of Roman material

Tuffs’ methods and some of his detailed conclusions have been criticised in some quarters However, his claim to have identified a major focus of Roman activity in the park has been amply vindicated by later archaeological evaluation work This has produced finds including building material, pottery, coins and caches of beautifully painted wall plaster These point to a building, probably a villa of the fourth century, somewhere very close by However, no unequivocal sign of any structure has yet been found So where was it?

We can’t yet conclusively answer that question, but our work has identified possible targets for further investigation We have carried out a very extensive

geophysical survey across the grassy expanse known as the Plain and as near to Perch Pond as the rampant undergrowth has allowed Although we have found no evidence of surviving foundations, we have identified two very large rectangular depressions which appear to have been dug out and backfilled at some time in the past The locations of these two depressions are:

z at the far eastern end of the Heronry Pond, where it is visible as a slight dip in the ground with a low, curving scarp behind Our radar survey shows shallow linear features aligned with it, which might conceivably be bedding trenches and other vestiges of a garden

z about 40m behind the refreshment kiosk, adjacent to the area which has interested archaeologists since Jack Elsden Tuffs, but which has always been too overgrown to survey

Could one or both of these unexplored features mark the site of obliterated Roman buildings?

Our review of historic aerial photographs seems to add weight to this possibility Several images from the 1940s show crop-marks on the western side of the Plain, including what appear to be long parallel rows of filled-in holes close to the north bank of Heronry Pond These are strongly suggestive of a vanished avenue of trees The alignment of this ‘avenue’ suggests that the pond was dug with no regard to it, implying in turn that it pre-dates the pond When the line is projected to the south-east it passes through both of the dug features mentioned above Was this ‘avenue’ a temporary feature intended to screen the construction of Heronry Pond from the gardens to the north? Could it be the one which occasioned the discovery – and destruction – of the mosaic?

Jack Elsden Tuffs at work in Wanstead Park

Next month the Wanstead Parklands Community Project will conclude this series of articles by discussing what is known about the Roman site in Wanstead Park and how it fits into the broader picture of life in Roman Britain For more information on the WPCP, visit www.wansteadpark.org.uk

In his poem, The Bat, Theordore Roethke beautifully describes a regular sight that can be seen in Wanstead on warm evenings in

spring and summer with the lines:

He loops in crazy figures half the night Among the trees that face the corner light

If the weather is mild, some may even emerge from their winter hibernation and start to hunt in February or March A combination of plentiful trees and old buildings provide roost sites, and a large insect population generated, in part, by our many lakes and ponds, ensures we have plenty of these small flying mammals in the area

But have you ever wondered where they spend the rest of the day, or where they hibernate in winter? Do you know how many different species there are? Do you know how many young they give birth to, or how long the young are dependent on their mother?

Bats are remarkable animals One of the most common species to be found in Wanstead, the common pipistrelle, can eat up to 3,000 small insects in a single night Yet this tiny creature has a body only 4cm long and it weighs less than a two pence coin Bats are able to detect tiny insect prey – as well as obstacles – on a dark night using echolocation Basically, they shout at very high frequencies and listen for the sound waves bouncing back at them Can you image trying to pinpoint the location of a fly by shouting and listening for the echo?

A female bat can delay fertilization to control when she gives birth She will then suckle the newborn for a few weeks until it gains independence Some species of bat, despite their tiny size, are capable of long flights to find food or to avoid the cold In the UK, when the weather gets cold and insect food becomes rare, bats slow down their metabolism Their heartbeat reduces dramatically, from 400 beats per minute when they are active to just 20 beats per minute during hibernation

The UK has 18 regularly occurring bat species, 17 of them breed here and most of these have been recorded in Epping Forest in the last few years Each has its own feeding behaviour, breeding cycle and roost habits Some prefer trees, for example, and others go for cavities in houses Each is incredibly fascinating In Wanstead Park alone, three different kinds of pipistrelles were detected in 2011 and there are several others, including Daubenton’s, which tend to feed very low over the surface of ponds Perch Pond is a good place to look for this species, about half an hour after sunset We also have the UK’s largest bat, the noctule, which tends to hunt much higher; a good place to look for it is near Alexandra Lake, on Aldersbrook Road, just after sunset

The bats of WansteadAhead of an illustrated talk on the bats of Epping Forest, Wren Conservation and Wildlife Group member Tim Harris offers an insight into the local population of these often misunderstood flying mammals

Forest services manager Keith French and forest ecologist Andy Froud have devoted years to studying the bats in Epping Forest, and have uncovered many surprising facts They will be giving an illustrated talk at Wanstead House on Monday, 20 February at 730pm (£250 entrance fee) For more information, call the Wren Conservation and Wildlife Group on 020 8989 3243

What, we hear you cry, is this alternative to disposable tampons and pads that

millions of women all over the world are using? And why do we need to rethink our sanitary protection anyway?

It's simple; menstrual cups are greener, healthier, lower cost and more convenient and discreet than disposable tampons and pads A menstrual cup is a small, soft, bell-shaped cup worn internally like a tampon, but it collects your flow instead of absorbing it The Femmecup can be worn for up to 12 hours (all day or overnight) and a single cup can last around five years

The average woman uses around 11,000 tampons and pads in her lifetime In contrast, with Femmecup women can do their bit for the environment Every woman who uses Femmecup is massively reducing the amount of waste produced by tampons, pads and their packaging Drainage systems are more efficient and the oceans are cleaner

For health-conscious women, menstrual cups are the perfect option Femmecup, for example, is made from 100% FDA approved, medical grade silicone It is hypo-allergenic, latex free, safe and hygienic Menstrual cups have never been linked with Toxic Shock Syndrome (as tampons are) Nearly 40% of women who switch from using tampons to a menstrual cup find that their menstrual cramps reduce or totally cease

Menstrual cups suit today's busy lifestyle; they require much less frequent attention than tampons, leaving women free to enjoy their day Femmecup menstrual cup is ultra-comfortable and ideal when playing sports, running and swimming

Femmecup is far more discreet than a tampon as nothing shows outside of the body – one less thing to worry about in the pool and changing room! No spares need to be carried; you cannot run out of supplies and your menstrual cup is always with you when you need it most

The final benefit has to be financial – Femmecup menstrual cup can reduce a woman's sanitary protection costs by 97% and totally eradicate the need for costly monthly bills on tampons and pads

Femmecup menstrual cup: a local business producing a global productIn the heart of Wanstead sits a bustling office; take a closer look and you'll see a group of local women working tirelessly to convert the world from disposable tampons and pads to their award winning product, the Femmecup menstrual cup Kate Selby, director of Femmecup Ltd, explains

In countries where language can be a problem and getting around isn’t straightforward, an escorted tour comes into its own. In China,

for example, little English is spoken, especially away from the main cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and navigating your way around Shanghai’s subway or Beijing’s traffic-filled roads can be a very tricky task indeed. Many tours to China will come with an escort who’ll accompany you from start to finish and will help with day-to-day activities, while a local guide will share their expert knowledge of each location, allowing you time to take in the incredible history and culture without having to think too much about logistics. The Chinese are extremely welcoming and any trip there will live long in your memories.

An escorted tour is sometimes the only option in countries where independent travel is restricted Burma is gradually opening up to visitors but there are restrictions in place for independent travellers, so an escorted tour is the best option here This is a fascinating country and one that remains undeveloped and potentially controversial to visit, so be sure to focus on local private companies rather than government-run organisations to ensure your visit benefits the Burmese people Locations such as the incredible city of Bagan where 2,000 temples dot the plains and the beautiful Inle Lake, with its picturesque pagodas, make this a hidden gem of South-east Asia

In locations where there’s so much to see and do, an escorted tour can ensure you make the most of your time Despite the recent opening of its first motorway, travelling around Sri Lanka can still be slow, especially as you head into the hilly interior where roads cling precariously to the sides of mountains and traffic crawls along to keep a safe distance from the edge – great for taking in the view, but slow going Sri Lanka is crammed with interest, from the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the north, the cultural heart of the island at Kandy and the nearby Pinnawela elephant orphanage, to the hill stations and tea plantations further south With so much to see, making the most of your time is key in Sri Lanka

Some countries just aren’t geared up for independent travel, making it tricky to get around In Cuba, public transport is limited and there tends to be just a few seats available for non-Cubans on most buses Car hire is one option that works well, but if you want to take in the island’s beautiful scenery then an escorted tour is the best way to do it The vibrant capital, Havana, is easy enough to explore on foot, but getting out to the tobacco-growing region of Pinar Del Rio, or down to fascinating Trinidad in central Cuba is far more difficult without your own transport A tour of around a week will allow you to take in all of these areas, perhaps also visiting a cigar or rum factory and Che Guevara’s mausoleum Allow up to two weeks to cover the whole country, however, as things run at a fairly slow pace in general

Touring The worldSeeing the sights while still having time to relax is the key to a great trip Escape Worldwide’s Mark Haughton explains where an escorted tour can be the best option for the perfect holiday

Learning meditation is a process of self-discovery whereby unique, individually prescribed techniques create integration

between the body, mind and spirit, which in turn allows one to live a more

harmonious life, feeling more connected with the world around us and its

inhabitants.

Meditation soothes away the tensions

of modern day life so that you are

not affected by continual ups and downs  Results appear within seven days, when you will begin to feel much more relaxed, and then it just gets deeper and more

profound with practice

The Foundation for International Spiritual Unfoldment, or FISU Meditation as we are known for short, was established in 1988 and functions in a unique way whereby meditation and spiritual practices (the Path) are individually prescribed for each meditator, based on the individual’s unique vibration (mantra) The principles of the ‘Path of Spiritual Unfoldment’ that are central to FISU meditation are: the unfoldment of the heart; the finding of greater happiness; and a life of philosophy

With personally prescribed meditation techniques you can reach deeper levels of yourself and draw on the more supporting life-giving energies that reside there The theory that everything is within us is supported here in that the practices given reflect us in all aspects, therefore they totally harmonise and put us in direct contact with our very essence – the core of our being

FISU’s headquarters are located in Chingford and there are 80 centres around the world where our meditation courses are held in 13 different countries Apart from David Beckham, we are probably the largest success story that has come out of Chingford – and like him, we are proud of our East End roots

There is a deep and profound philosophy behind our work, which acts as a support system to the spiritual aspirant, and when embraced, heightens the speed of progress

We practice meditation twice daily for 20 to 30 minutes Most people can fit this into their daily routine and are pleased to do so when they experience the wonderful and varied benefits We usually meditate in the morning before breakfast and before an evening meal, perhaps just after returning home from work The morning meditation enables us to remain calm and composed all day and the evening session ensures that we fully enjoy our evenings and throw off the tensions of the day

Spiritual unfoldmentRajesh Ananda from the Foundation for International Spiritual Unfoldment (FISU) explains how individually prescribed meditation practices can help you to overcome stress and depression, increase creativity and improve the quality of your life

Meditation is very energising and gives two added boosts to your day This means you can accomplish much more in life, especially when making significant changes that incur a greater effort

Meditation improves health and well-being and gives one a general sense of standing on a firmer foundation than before – meaning that we feel stronger and more capable of facing new challenges or adversity with renewed strength

Finally, spiritually unfolding through meditation can bring greater happiness, self-esteem and confidence People who meditate are generally happier and more content with their lives When we find greater peace within ourselves it is such a treasure, especially as modern day life can be very draining on our time and energy

Among other achievements, we have had good success when working with those suffering from depression and panic or anxiety attacks However, our greatest reward as teachers is to see the changes that occur as someone blossoms We see them moving from a fragmented way of living to something much more integrated, wholesome, natural and together – with no pills, drugs or supplements needed

My wife and I had been living in Wanstead back in the late 1990s, but moved to Dunmow in 2000 having established

a wholesale food business on the outskirts of the M25. We often returned as we had several customers in the area. However, upon reaching five stores in 2008, we knew that Belgique was what we wanted to concentrate on and sold the wholesale business.

In the summer of 2008 we passed by the Bart’s Renal Unit on the corner of Sprat Hall Road and Cambridge Park whilst on our way to look for a central kitchen unit in Leytonstone Something told us that we needed to stop and take a closer look The site looked very dilapidated, but we thought we should give it a shot and so arranged a viewing We soon realised that it was a fantastic building and all it needed was some urgent 'TLC'

We arranged a meeting with the landlord – he liked the idea and a deal was done We first installed the kitchen in the basement as we had outgrown our current kitchen In the winter of 2008 we refurbished the shop and opened for business in early February 2009

We initially took the building on as it could house our kitchen and head office If the shop worked then that would actually be a bonus We didn’t have high hopes for the shop as there was not much footfall and the whole of the Cambridge Park parade did look a bit sad after the A12 decade

Gosh, were we wrong! On the first weekend we were overwhelmed The second weekend was like a stampede, over 30 tickets behind on drinks and over an hour wait for food – it was a difficult time We quickly went back to the drawing board and made some drastic changes Once spring arrived we then had the added benefit of the terrace and it got even busier Three years down the road we are still just as busy and are in the middle of a small facelift and an upgrade of the terrace area

Last September we started our jazz evenings and these are now nearly always fully booked New for 2012 will be Sunday barbecues, where we will be cooking food using three different types of barbecue: a traditional one using real wood; a Scandinavian open fire salmon grill; and two kamado-style barbecues We‘ll have the classic dishes available but customers will also be able to order specialities in advance online for their families, such as whole legs of lamb, turbot and Limousin beef These will be cooked slowly in the smokers just in time for the customers' arrival Also new for spring 2012 will be table barbecue evenings, which will take place on Thursdays (more about this in upcoming issues of the Wanstead Village Directory)

Wanstead is a fantastic diverse community and a lot of our regulars have become good friends Business hasn’t always been easy over the past three years We’ve seen the prices of our products and our costs rise to a ridiculous level, but as long as we can offer our customers good food at an acceptable price in a relaxed and friendly environment then we are happy As you can tell from our plans, we never sit still and always try to be innovative We even have plans to hold a large Christmas market one day on George Green

From Bart's to BelgiqueIn February 2009 Igor Bekaert and his wife Ann opened the Wanstead branch of Belgique in the former Bart's Renal Unit on the corner of Spratt Hall Road and Cambridge Park Three years on, Igor reflects on the story of this popular brasserie

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking - it makes something we can all do... twice as effective! It is a specific exercise technique and is not to be confused with trekking, hillwalking or rambling.

Nordic Walking poles add two major benefits to going for a walk, they use the upper body muscles and they propel you along, making it feel easier to work quite hard!

In order to gain maximum benefit from Nordic Walking it is essential to learn the correct technique from a qualified instructor who is accredited by Nordic Walking UK - see www.nordicwalking.co.uk

Forget the popular television shows telling you that papercraft is all about birds made out of scrunched up newspaper

and computers made of origami. Yes, they are valid forms of papercraft, but as items they don’t seem particularly useful. If I choose to spend my free time playing with paper (and I do), I wish to come away from the table with something that has a purpose.

For me, modern papercraft literally sends a message, whether it’s between friends, colleagues or relatives in a handmade card, or right down the generations in a scrapbook Cardmaking and scrapbooking are a fantastic way of filling your free time and it’s not very difficult to get started

First, let’s focus on cardmaking The age of email and e-cards has taken some of the flair out of our communication with each other Gone are the days of calling cards and handwritten thankyou notes, or so it seems But it needn’t be that way Let’s keep it alive, and make it interesting

As you begin, you may find yourself drawn to certain materials and not others, which is of course one way in which your cards will be different from everyone else’s I can often tell which of my friends has sent me a handmade card without looking at the writing inside, such is their personal style

All you need to get started are a few simple supplies First, you need something to cut the

Local craft teacher Sy Peddlesden explains the joys of cardmaking and scrapbooking in an age dominated by electronic communications

paper This could be a simple pair of scissors, a craft knife with a mat and metal ruler or, to keep it all square without all the measuring, a paper trimmer Second, something to stick the paper together A glue stick will do, but there are many other convenient methods available that may give a better hold and finish Third, you need the paper itself Cards can come pre-cut and pre-scored with envelopes to match, freeing you up to work on the design itself

Design elements can come from anywhere and can be anything you want that will fit into an envelope It helps to keep one eye on posting regulations so that you don’t end up having to send your creations at the small packet rate, but quite often ribbon, fabric and even buttons end up on a handmade card A good browse around a stationery shop or the pound shop will yield some gems literally (flat-backed plastic gems look fantastic on cards and don’t add too much to the weight of them)

There is a whole world of craft supplies and techniques out there to be harnessed and used on cards Even if, like me, you are artistically challenged (I can’t draw for toffee) you can still create a miniature work of art that the recipient cannot bear to throw away when the season has passed My drawing inadequacies, for example, are not a problem due to the large amount of images that can be produced through rubber stamping The more artistic among you may choose to put your own drawings onto cards, or make complex silhouette designs meticulously cut from one sheet of paper, to make the main motif In the end your cards should reflect you, making written communication personal again

Cardmaking can be very satisfying, but unless you take a photo of your work, you’ll never see it again If you want to keep your creations, I recommend making the move into scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is no longer about sugar paper books and flour and water glue-like pastes It has now become a way of preserving photos and the stories behind them for the future Scrapbooking uses all of the same tools and techniques as cardmaking with one major difference, your materials should be photo-safe This means they must be acid and lignin free Acid will degrade your photos and lignin in paper causes it to become brittle and yellow over time In all scrapbooking supplies the acid is neutralised and the lignin is removed from the paper when it is milled Once you have made sure your supplies (even adhesives) are photo-safe, you can commence assembling

a scrapbook page much in the way you would assemble a card Use your own style, enjoy the process, and this time it’s yours to keep

My children love looking at their scrapbooks We talk about things we have done and they ask questions about their past These money-can’t-buy memories are lived over and over again No more will members of our family pull out a shoebox of old photos and ask: “Who was that?”

You can dive into this as deeply as you like, investing in tools and gadgets and an endless stash of consumables, or you can flirt with the notion of papercrafting by buying a kit that contains what you need for one project Either path you choose will be an enjoyable one, and it can keep you and your family entertained without breaking the bank

Anyone of us could become homeless . . Imagine a life where you have no home, no support and no future.

That is exactly what Cameron faced, until he found a home in Anchor House. After losing

his job to injury, he was unable to pay his rent and found himself out on the street.

The scary bit is that it could happen to any one of us. Injury, illness, loss of job, relationship

breakdowns—it happens to the best of us.

Choral singing is cool again, thanks to the efforts of the extraordinary Gareth Malone and TV programmes such as Last

Choir Standing. Yet choirs have always been an enormous part of British musical life. My own music education began as a choirboy at a church in Nottingham. Since then I’ve worked as a composer and musical director across the UK and the US. However, as a resident of Leytonstone for the past 12 years, I’ve long had the nagging feeling that I should be doing more to contribute to music in my own community.

I experienced a transformation last September as the conductor of the Big Sing, a unique event at the Southbank Centre Seven choirs, with performers aged three to 80, sang all around the Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain Many of the choirs were made up of singers from Voicelab, the innovative vocal course founded in 2007 by top singing expert Mary King Apart from arranging the music and playing accordion, my prime responsibility was to conduct the red team, a 200-strong community choir of Lambeth residents

Through the process I experienced the joy of watching an ensemble of enthusiastic amateurs as they grappled with the material, inhabited it, and were finally transformed by it Their performances were full of energy, passion and life We sang an arrangement of Waterloo Sunset with Ray Davies in attendance and it was then that I knew it was time to get something started in my own neighbourhood

I was fortunate enough to meet Philip Barnett, who sang in one of the Voicelab choirs He approached me to enquire about using one of my arrangements for his own choir I agreed, and asked whether he’d be happy to share some thoughts on how to set up a community choir Philip’s generosity, together with that of his wife Judy and his co-leader Brian, is what enabled me to make the transition from thinking about starting a choir to actually doing it

Less than six months later, I’m in the proud position of being halfway through the first term of Upbeat, Wanstead’s new community choir, which is open to anyone aged 16 and over, regardless of experience We have a songbook, a rehearsal venue at Wanstead High School and a fantastic accompanist, together with more than 80 singers on our books – all having responded to adverts, leaflets, internet marketing and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth

All our members have taken the leap of faith to commit to our weekly rehearsals, and I’m thrilled to say that after a very short space of time they are making a terrific sound We have a great mixture of seasoned performers and those who are trying out group singing for the first time I firmly believe that regular singing can change your life; it’s good for your health, self-confidence and social life And we’re still welcoming new members There’s no audition, simply come along and find out what it’s all about

Choral CommunityTim Sutton, the founder of a new community choir in Wanstead, talks about why he felt the need to do more for music in his own backyard, and explains why he believes music can change your life

Upbeat Choir meets on Tuesday evenings from 745pm to 930pm at Wanstead High School, Redbridge Lane West Singers of all abilities from the age of 16 upwards are welcome to attend For more details, call 07986 754 741 or visit www.upbeatchoir.com

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking

- it makes something we can all do... twice as effective!

It is a specific exercise technique and is not to be

confused with trekking, hillwalking or rambling.

Nordic Walking poles add two major benefits to going for

a walk, they use the upper body muscles and they propel

you along, making it feel easier to work quite hard!

In order to gain maximum benefit from Nordic Walking it

is essential to learn the correct technique from a qualified

instructor who is accredited by Nordic Walking UK - see

www.nordicwalking.co.ukCall for details about our classes, which include:

• Nordic walking technique courses• One hour fitness walks• Ultimate Nordic Circuits

• Wellbeing walks• 1-2-1 Sessions• Kettlebell classes• Gymstick Classes

T he huge popularity of farmers’ markets across

the UK today has marked a return to simple,

uncomplicated, face-to-face transactions between

producers and their customers, in the belief that bigger

is not always better.Creating farmers’ markets has proved to be the perfect

way of re-establishing a direct relationship between

producer and consumer. Their existence is helping to

revive old craft traditions and small-scale production

where commitment and direct accountability

contribute significantly to the quality of the produce.

At Essex Farmers’ Markets, we are fostering these values

by bringing selected local producers to village halls,

high streets and market squares around the county. You

could say that we are going back to the farm gate to

rediscover a taste of Essex.

Think school is all about lessons?

It’s a common misconception that school isn’t fun, just

lesson after lesson. But we’re here to blow that rumour out

There’s loads of stuff going on at Wanstead High after

Think school is all about lessons? It’s a common misconception that school isn’t fun, just lesson after lesson. But we’re here to blow that rumour out of the water. There’s loads of stuff going on at Wanstead High after hours that you may or may not know about. When all the teachers leave, we come in and open up the school to the community, allowing everything and anything to happen.

If you are interested in hiring the facilities at Wanstead High School, please contact Tony Derrett 07931 57 8701 or email [email protected]
