SCHOOL STANDARDS & IMPROVEMENT SERVICE Autumn 2020

WELCOME

Welcome to our autumn term Primary Teaching & Learning Newsletter.

Many of you will be aware that Wendy Callard has recently retired as Primary School Improvement Manager and I am sure you will join me in extending thanks for her invaluable contribution to the school improvement service in Wandsworth over many years.

She worked tirelessly to ensure that the link inspector programme ran smoothly, that appropriate training and briefings were planned and presented, and above all providing a measured and helpful point of contact for schools whenever issues arose. She will be much missed. I am pleased, however, to let you know that we have recently interviewed candidates for the role and I am delighted to inform you that we have appointed a suitable candidate, who will be joining the team shortly . We would also like to welcome Angela Pitcher, who joined us as a link inspector. Andy Hough, Head of School Participation and Performance For the time being, most of our training programme will move online. We are planning to provide a combination of short live training sessions, live briefings, video recordings and follow up discussion meetings. We are really missing working with you this term and are keen to know how we can best support you in this current climate. To that end we have devised questions for English and mathematics subject leaders, to hear from you what your priorities are. This will enable us to tailor a programme of support that meets your needs and those of your pupils. As always, we also offer bespoke school support and training. Please do get in touch if you would like to request this. With best wishes for the term ahead. The Primary team

Welcome back to school! We hope you were able to relax and unwind over the summer, and have now returned refreshed and ready to go! A special welcome for anyone new to the team. Please do drop Nicki Ashton an email ([email protected]) to introduce yourself. As always, we are here to support you – as teachers and leaders of primary maths– perhaps more appropriate than ever in this COVID-recovery period. Please contact Nicki with any questions or for support.

New look NCETM! The NCETM website (https://www.ncetm.org.uk/ ) has been updated over the summer, streamlined to showcase news, resources, podcasts, maths hubs info and more. Do take a look!

Post COVID Maths Planning – for Wandsworth schools

A small team of subject leaders have been working over the summer to re-think their curriculum plan for this year, in light of school closure. Based initially on White Rose Maths long term plans, we have re-jigged units and allocated times to address the gaps in teaching/learning since March, and referenced links to NCETM PD materials for planning. We are in the final stages of collating and presenting these documents, and details of how to access them will be emailed to Wandsworth maths subject leaders by the end of the month. Big thanks to Amit, Amy, James, Rob and Rona!

Maths Subject Leader Network Meeting

It was lovely to see so many of you at the online meeting in July. For those unable to join us, an audio copy of the powerpoint was sent out afterwards. Please contact Nicki if you have not received it. This term, our focus will rightly be on COVID-recovery, and for maths, this will be based on use of the DfE guidance and NCETM exemplification. Details of dates and access will follow by email. Please forward to Nicki Ashton the names and email contacts of any new maths subject leaders so that details of events and resources can be shared.

London South West Maths Hub

The maths hub continues to thrive. Led jointly by Priya Rawal (at Chesterton) and Nicki Ashton, the focus for many Wandsworth schools this year is on embedding and sustaining a teaching for mastery approach across the school. Popular work groups such as lesson design will now be incorporated within this, but there are still opportunities to join others such as:

• Developing continuity from Year 5 to year 8 • Subject knowledge enhancement for teachers and TAs • Use of procedural variation to expose mathematical relationships and structure • Effective approaches to problem-solving - from fluency to flair

See https://londonsouthwestmathshub.co.uk/home/ or contact Nicki Ashton for more details.

MATHEMATICS

DfE Mathematics guidance https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/teaching-mathematics-in-primary-schools

Published in July, this non statutory guidance aims to: • enable greater coherence to the national curriculum by exposing core concepts and demonstrating

progression from Year 1 to Year 6 • summarise the most important knowledge and understanding within each year group and important

connections between these mathematical topics

The guidance comprises of 79 ‘Ready to progress’ criteria organised into year-group chapters. Each chapter provides teaching guidance and example assessment questions, and supports coherence across the primary phase and into KS3 through careful identification of:

• Key representations • Language structures - ‘core’/stem sentences • Making connections - within a year group • Assessment - demonstrating the depth and breadth of

understanding needed • Calculation methods and fluency development

There are accompanying videos for the introduction and each of the year-group chapters on the DfE link (scroll to the bottom).

Exemplification of the Ready-to-progress Criteria

The NCETM has produced a suite of 79 powerpoints to support the RTP criteria detailed in the guidance. They are not written primarily as first teaching materials, but rather for review, practice and consolidation. Aimed for use with small groups of pupils, and accessible for non-specialists and support staff, they could be used as part of a pre-teach or consolidation session, or as part of a teaching sequence if supplemented (links are included to the PD materials and lesson videos) – perhaps particularly useful at the moment, as teaching picks up on gaps and misconceptions from the summer period of lockdown. The exemplification is very practical, with content in the form of powerpoint slides that should be covered slowly/steadily and repetitively as required, with questions included alongside animations to allow for discussion. NRich activities are included for many of the criteria, and for others (e.g. number facts) there are multiple flashcards included in the slides to support fluency.

This exemplification (alongside the guidance itself) is quality material, and it is well worth spending time considering how to make best use of it in school, across the academic year. It is not a COVID-recovery document (its inception was a year ago!), and it will hold value for all pupils going forward in making progress year on year.

https://www.ncetm.org.uk/classroom-resources/exemplification-of-ready-to-progress-criteria/

For those interested, these RTP criteria will be matched (where possible) to the NFER tests data analysis templates created by the REU – for schools buying into REU Analysis Package. This will allow teachers to identify gaps in pupils’ knowledge and skills, which can then be addressed through use of the exemplification material. The REU will publish details about how to access these templates as soon as they are complete, or you could contact Gwen Sinnott ([email protected]) or Nicki Ashton ([email protected]) for more information.

Black History Month

Black History Month 2020

Black History Month is celebrated each October in the UK. As part of this celebration, Wandsworth Council will be holding a number of exciting events and programmes in local areas. Schools and colleges, and early years and youth settings, are strongly encouraged to mark the occasion, especially cross-curricular. Black History Month 2020 brings opportunities to recognise and

celebrate the contribution to British society that Black achievers have made, whether in business, science and medicine, sport, music and entertainment, popular culture, literature, politics and all other aspects of British life.

Schools and colleges, and early years and youth settings, will be invited to contribute to a special edition of the Bulletin, to showcase this important equalities, diversity and inclusion work in Wandsworth.

We would love to hear what you are doing, so If you are planning an event or programme of activities to mark the occasion, please get in touch via email to either: [email protected] or [email protected]

More information about Black History Month can be found here:https://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk

Black History Month always provides a fantastic opportunity to celebrate contributions and achievements of people of African and Caribbean descent made over many generations. This year, the theme of the celebration is “African Americans and the Vote,” exploring 150 years (and more) of the struggle to ensure that African Americans are able to fully participate in American democracy.

Wandsworth Learning Resources Service supports teachers and schools in celebrating Black History Month by providing resources, such as non-fiction and fiction books, artefacts and any other relevant items to celebrate the achievements of Black Britons. The library also offers high-quality fiction so that children, from our diverse community, can find themselves in books and stories as well as use stories to learn about the experiences and lives of others . The service have collated a dedicated BAME booklist for our subscribing primary schools which is available upon request.

If you would like to receive any resources enhancing the teaching and learning about Black History or our BAME booklist please contact the library at [email protected]

Literacy and Numeracy Support Service (LNSS)

Literacy and Numeracy Support Service (LNSS)

The team is delighted to be back in schools and working face to face with almost all pupils. Last term we were able

to continue to offer support to pupils through a wide variety of models. After half-term we delivered remote video

and audio lessons to pupils both within their schools or at home. In order to make this as multisensory as possible,

we delivered resource packs so that the pupils could work along with us in an interactive way and even managed to

play some games remotely. We recorded lessons embedded in PowerPoint or emailed lessons for pupils with

online access. When this was not possible, we sent packs of resources and activities directly or via the schools to

ensure no-one was missed.

Dyslexia Awareness Week This year Dyslexia Awareness week falls from Monday 5th to Sunday 11th October. There will be a number of events happening locally in Wandsworth, as well as through national and international organisations. The global theme for this year is #DyslexiaCreates, which the British Dyslexia

Association (BDA) describes as “looking at the power of dyslexia to create ideas, organisations and society and the invaluable contribution this makes to the UK. https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/support-us/awareness-events/dyslexia-awareness-week/dyslexia-week-2020 The week is an opportunity to consider the challenges and barriers which Dyslexia brings but consider how pupils can be supported to achieve their full potential and feel confident in their strengths. Dyslexia Week Webinars We are offering two free webinars relating to Dyslexia during the week. For teachers: a twilight taster session on Wednesday sharing tried and tested strategies for supporting pupils that are easy to implement with minimal cost. For parents: A questions and answers session on Thursday evening giving parents the chance to ask questions about Dyslexia and how it is supported in the Borough. Parents are asked to submit questions in advance to [email protected]. How schools can get involved Schools in the Borough are planning to: Hold assemblies to discuss dyslexia as a learning difference, focussing on strengths as well as challenges and allowing pupils to think about their own strengths or superpowers. Members of staff with Dyslexia are sharing their experiences with pupils or playing a video such as Seeing Dyslexia differently as a starting point. Individual classes are working on a project on a famous person with Dyslexia and consider how thinking differently has helped them to succeed. There are a number of lists of famous dyslexics including this video. Staff are wearing red to school on Thursday 8th as part of the international “Go Red” campaign to reclaim the colour red. Please let us know of any events in your schools for Dyslexia Awareness week.

*New for 2020-21 These twilight sessions will be an opportunity to share (and play!) games that will help to develop number sense and gain fluency with basic maths facts which underpin the Maths curriculum. Games are an excellent way to mo-tivate reluctant or anxious learners as well as developing social skills. Each session will focus on a different type of game or equipment. Games are particularly suitable for one to one or small group work but have been successfully played in whole class sessions. The games can also be played at home. The games are aimed at pupils in primary who are taking longer to achieve maths fluency in the four operations, but most can be adapted to other age ranges or higher levels. Participants will be given details of equipment they will need in order to play along. This will be the first time we have played games remotely in a training session, although we have successfully done this in remote teaching. To play along in the first session, you will need:

• Five 1-6 dot dice • Multisided dice – a minimum of two 0-9 dice one (a 1-4, 1-6, 1-12, 1-20 and percentile dice would also be

useful) • Alternatively, a spinner or an online dice generator could be used.

Following the expansion of the categories and the collection of multiple reasons, ‘Other’ will no longer be recorded as category for exclusions with a start date on or after 1st August 2020.

The first collection of up to three reasons and new codes will be collected in the Spring 2021 census.

3. Attendance

No attendance data will be collected in the Autumn 2020 school census.

However, attendance data for the 2020 to 2021 academic year will include categories of school attendance, rather than just those that equate to authorised and unauthorised absence. The first collection of this data will occur in Spring 2021, which includes data for the previous autumn term.

4. FSM eligibility period

Due to the absence of a summer census collection, DfE have decided to amend the ‘end date’ range for autumn 2020 census to collect an FSM eligibility end date that is, on or after 17 Jan 2020 and up to and including the autumn census day 1st October 2020.

5. Steps to take to prepare for the School Census Autumn Return

Please ensure that dry runs are carried out as early as possible including comparing reports with previous census to provide enough time to resolve any issues.

Premium Files For Financial Year 2020 - 2021 The Pupil Premium files have been released by the DfE based on pupils in January School Census 2020 who were aged 4 and above in Reception to year 11 and solely or dual-main registered at that school. A final file will be released in December 2020 based on the latest March 2020 Children Looked-After data return. We have downloaded the current files and they are available on the REU website under Cross Phase to make it easier for you; alternatively you can download these from Key to Success. Pupil Premium Funding covers four elements: Deprivation pupil premium (known as FSM ever 6’), Post LAC pupil premium (adopted from care), Looked after children pupil premium and Service child pupil premium (known as Service ever 6’). Please refer to the Pupil Premium User Guide which is also available on the REU website (https://children.wandsworth.gov.uk/education/reu/) for further explanation including any adjustments that may be made.

Governor Services

Governance – back to school Schools are welcoming back staff and pupils after the Summer break and will be getting used to new ways of working in order to keep everyone safe. The priority for school leaders and their governing boards remains the same - providing the best possible education for all pupils. The pandemic will have a long-lasting impact on all pupils, particularly those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable. Governing boards and school leaders will need time to review the needs of pupils as they return to school so that they can make the correct plans to support every pupil. Governor services have produced a model FGB agenda and crib-sheet with the key issues for this term. This is available from your Wandsworth clerk or from Governor Services Co-ordinator.

Meetings remain virtual According to latest DfE guidance, Governors and trustees are not prevented from visiting their schools, but “schools will need to consider their own risk assessments and how they will protect the health and safety of any visitors alongside staff and pupils, in line with our guidance” and, “If your visits can happen outside of school hours, they should.” Governor Services advise that if your current, virtual arrangement are working well for you, to continue to hold meetings and make decisions as you have been.

Chairs Briefing Wandsworth Governor Services are pleased to continue to support Chairs and Vice Chairs from all Wandsworth schools with termly information briefings.
