Recent Reviews Musings by Maureen: The Restoration is the final book in the Prairie State Friends series and I am sad to leave these dear friends behind, but I love getting to the end of stories, even if it isn’t the way I wanted it to end.

Our three friends are back, Priscilla, Leah, and Elaine, and yes they always seem to be there for each other. Leah is now married to Adam and you will love their relationship with the girls, but there is now a new person in their lives, and we don’t know how this is going to end with so much bitterness.

Elaine is in a new relationship with Ben, and he has proposed, will she accept and fulfill her dreams of having a family of her own. The same with Priscilla will Elam ever ask her to marry him? Or will the new guy in town fulfill his dreams and win Priscilla, this is going to be a rock road, and you wonder who will get hurt, and you are surly going to be surprised in the end. Such a good and fast read, almost two (sic) fast, but I had to find out, but then the final page was turned and of course, I wanted more. Interview Questions & Answers Q. What are some common themes throughout your books? A. The themes vary depending on the book, but you’ll generally find the common threads of characters strengthening their faith, acceptance, hope for the future, strong family ties, and practicing good Christian values. Q. Some authors plot their books from beginning to end. Others have a general idea of where a story is headed when they begin a book, and, as they write, the book unfolds. What is your writing process? A. In addition to the summary for my story, before I write the first draft of the book I usually do a chapter-by-chapter outline. However, quite often I don’t stick strictly to the outline, as new ideas will come to me as the story unfolds. Q. What would you like your readers to know about your journey as a writer? A. I would like them to know that before I begin writing a book, I ask God to give me the words that would touch someone’s life and help them see that God is with them, no matter how fearful or hopeless a situation might be. Q. How does your faith play into your work? A. My faith in God has been a huge part of my life since I was a teenager, so it’s only natural that I have incorporated it into my writing. In addition to the scriptures I include in each of my stories, the characters I create deal with situations that help to strengthen their faith and make their relationships stronger. Having grown up in a dysfunctional home, I’m able to incorporate my faith and how God helps us through the challenges of life within the pages of my books. Q. Launches Six-Part Serial Novel, THE AMISH MILLIONAIRE

Did writing the serial novel pose challenges that differ from delivering a story told in one volume? “Oh, yes,” Wanda provided. “Jean and I would write one book and turn it in to our editor and move on to the next one. But sometimes in the books that followed, our characters took us in a direction different from our original serial outline, and the change in course would impact the telling of the first book, which was already in the publication process. But we persevered until everything meshed, and we are both happy with the end result.” What’s next for the Brunstetter writing team? “A second book about twins Elma and Thelma from our THE LOPSIDED CHRISTMAS CAKE,” Jean said, referring to the September 2015 novel by her and Wanda. “In my books I always like to show readers something about the Amish that isn’t widely

known. One of my Amish friends once told me, ‘We are not saints and don’t want to be portrayed as such. We are human and are faced with the same problems as other people.’ So when it came time to write The Restoration, this is one fact I set out to weave into my story.”

Many characters in The Restoration are facing the consequences of mistakes they’ve made.

Cora Finley abandoned the Amish faith years ago, leaving her two young children to be raised by their father so she could pursue a career in nursing. Now that she’s made her home in Arthur, IL, Cora desperately wants to forge a relationship with her now-grown son, Adam Beachy, and her three granddaughters that Adam is raising after the untimely deaths of his sister and her husband. As if the strained relationship between Adam and Cora isn’t enough to deal with, she worries about her teenage son, Jared, by her second marriage. How can she tell him that he and Adam they are brothers?

Then there’s Priscilla Herschberger, who is being courted by two men, Elam, her long-time

Amish boyfriend, and David, an Englisher who’s in town visiting his grandparents. David says he wants to become Amish, but is his decision one of faith, or has he been swayed by his affection for Priscilla? Eventually, Elam betrays his friendship with both Priscilla and David, and they make mistakes as well. Even Priscilla’s mother makes an unwise decision in trying to protect her daughter.

Meanwhile, Jonah Miller, whose heart has been broken by three women, has given up on

finding happiness and a mother for his two young children. He’s afraid to admit, even to himself, that he still loves Priscilla’s friend, Elaine Schrock. Having unwisely rejected Jonah in order to adequately care for her dying grandmother, Elaine has been proposed to by Ben. But she’s not sure she can

The ability of the Amish to forgive transgressions is something Wanda purposefully set out to

show in The Restoration. “Forgiveness doesn’t always come easily, even for the Amish, but their strong belief in God

and his Word helps them to be able to forgive, even when it’s most difficult,” Wanda pointed out. “In October 2006 several Amish children were killed by an English man, who overtook their

schoolhouse with the intent of doing harm to the children,” Wanda continued “It was not easy for the families of these children to forgive the shooter, but they knew forgiveness is a prerequisite to healing. Some of them even went to the shooter’s funeral.”

Wanda’s ability to share her insight into the lifestyle of the Amish is one reason she has been

Wounded and hurting people have a knack for finding their way to Emma’s classes for “quilting therapy.” In THE HEALING QUILT readers will meet Jennifer, who is pregnant with her first child and whose husband is unemployed; Mike, a workaholic charter boat owner; Erika, a bitter, wheelchair-bound teen; Kim, a waitress eager for adventure; Noreen, a recently retired widow struggling with her new role in life, and B.J., an artist facing a fatal illness. how the Florida Amish lifestyle differs from that in Indiana. “The homes the Amish own or rent in their Sarasota community of Pinecraft have

electricity, which means some of them have a telephone inside their Florida homes,” explained the author, who is known for the authenticity of her Amish stories. “As for transportation, since horse and buggies are not allowed in Pinecraft, the Amish walk, ride a bicycle, take a bus or hire a driver. In Indiana—and Ohio—the Amish meet for church in various members’ homes, but in Pinecraft they convene in a very simple church building.

“The ‘healing’ in the title of the book comes not from the actual wall hanging each of the characters quilts but from God, in the way of emotional and spiritual development, with the help of the various class members,” Brunstetter continued. “And when such inner healing occurs, the various characters are able to let go of bitterness, anger, un-forgiveness, insecurities and fear and move on with their lives.”

Brunstetter has more than seven million copies of her books sold to date, and her

novels have also earned berths on the New York Times list and those reflecting sales in the Christian market, such as that compiled by the Christian Booksellers Association. Each book will leave the reader with a cliffhanger.” The story follows Amish newlywed couple Meredith and Luke Stoltzfus. Luke has lost his job, and the inevitable struggles and arguments follow. “As in most marriages there are some bumpy roads,” said Brunstetter, who’s been married nearly 50 years to her husband, Richard. “Finances can be one of the greatest detriments to a marriage.” Luke’s uncle offers him the chance to learn a new trade, so Luke makes plans for a quick trip to his uncle’s place in Middlebury, Indiana, despite his wife’s reservations. Along the way, Luke is accosted by a desperate drug addict on the run. When Luke refuses to hand over his wallet, a violent encounter erupts. Back home, with a baby on the way, Meredith is desperate to hear from her missing husband. “This particular story takes place in Lancaster County, PA, a large Amish community, which is about 50 miles from where my husband grew up. We have friends in that area and have visited many, many times. As for inspiration for the book itself, Brunstetter says, “When my husband was pastoring a church in Troy, Idaho, several years, we discovered the nearby town of Lapwai. There we found a historical museum with information about the Nez Perce Indians and Rev. Henry and Eliza Spaulding, missionaries who brought education and the Christian faith to their tribe.”

According to Brunstetter, whose career spans more than 60 published books, Eliza Spalding and another missionary, Mrs. Marcus Whitman, were the first white women to travel to Oregon Country. “I believe they were able to accomplish what trail-hardened men couldn’t because of their gentle spirits, love for the Indians, and of course, their devotion to God.”

Amish Fiction Author Wanda Brunstetter To Appear During Shipshewana Quilt Festival

To Be Auctioned as Oaklawn Benefit

Uhrichsville, OH —The thousands of tourists who flock to Indiana for the Shipshewana Quilt Festival June 25-29 will have the opportunity to meet popular New York Times bestselling author Wanda E. Brunstetter. A founder of the popular Amish fiction genre with more than seven million copies of her books sold, Brunstetter will sign her latest novels and guest host at the benefit auction of her fan-produced collectible, the “Quilt of a Thousand Hands.” Brunstetter will appear on the opening day of the Festival at Yoder Department Store, 300 S. Van Buren Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25. Among the books she will sign are The Tattered Quilt and The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club. Set in Shipshewana, the novels revolve around an Amish couple who teach quilting classes in their home to a diverse group of students. As the beginning quilters learn to transform scraps of fabric into beauty, their fragmented lives begin to take new shape with the helping hands of each other and the healing hand of God. Following the Yoder signing, Brunstetter will cross the street to Shipshewana Auction, 345 S. Van Buren Street, for the 1 p.m. benefit auction of her “Quilt of a Thousand Hands.” The one-of-a-kind collectible quilt is the culmination of Brunstetter’s call for quilters across the country to participate in a project to benefit Oaklawn Psychiatric Center. Located in nearby Goshen, Oaklawn provides mental health services to the Amish community.

“I put out the call for squares last summer when The Tattered Quilt was published,” the author said. “My generous readers donated more than 1,000 squares for the cause, and a skilled Amish quilter I know in Shipshewana designed the quilt and stitched all the lovely pieces together by hand. The end result is an exquisite work of art, a true collector’s piece.” Brunstetter noted that the 96” x 116” quilt will fit a queen- or king-sized bed. Brunstetter will arrive in Shipshewana before the Festival opens to sign books at the Blue Gate Theatre, 195 Van Buren Street, before two live performances of “Half-Stitched, the Musical.” The production is based on Brunstetter’s The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club. Those signings will be from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday, June 23 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24.
