Joe MangrumJoe Mangrum has a passion for creating inspired spaces and he is a true artist and one of

the most creative artist to use materials that are man made or has to do something with

nature. He was born at February 10, 1969 and raised in Florissant, Missouri. At the age of

16, he won a trip to India in an art competition. That trip marked the beginning of his

interest in globetrotting and making art in different places around the world.  After

attending the School of Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, he traveled for over four years in

Europe and came back in the United States and started to go to all the states which led to

innovative ways of supporting this passion for art and adventure.

After a few years, he worked as an artist in some music tours. Eventually he landed in

Laguna Beach, California and began to arrange mandala forms in public spaces out of

flowers and seashells. His newly found activism propelled his determination to examine

environmental issues in the forum of public art. Mangrum’s art caught the eye of art gallery

owner Daniel Arvizu, whom invited Mangrum to create an installation at his gallery in North

California. Joe moved to San Francisco took up residence there, permanently, after many

years of traveling. “It's a hard job market right now, but with a little determination, passion

and creativity, anything is possible.” One of his artwork is permanent and can be found on

opposite corners of the bus stops of Mission and 22nd streets in San Francisco. Joe

Mangrum attended the Florence Biennale in December, 2003, where he was awarded the

prestigious Lorenzo de' Medici award. Mangrum has created installations since 1994 and

is currently working on a book that documents this history.

Dear Mountain Goat,I have a secret that I need to tell you and you are the only one I

trust because we have been doing everything together no matter what happens. I hope you won’t be mad that I just told you now. I am really a volcano which is really bad for you and all your friends if you still live here because I don’t really know when I’m going to erupt and maybe It’ll be a big eruption. I am really sorry that I just told you now.

The consequences are I am really going to be a dirty and unhealthy mountain and maybe no one can live in me again in about a hundred years or maybe a thousand years because I haven’t erupted in my whole mountain life which means I am going to erupt anytime now. There are also earthquakes before I erupt which can destroy some things like trees and plants in me. There are also gaseous fumes, like sulfur that smells really bad. It can take years for the lava to cool off.

12

Page 13: Wammagazine (2)

I really need to tell you now because I can erupt anytime now because I’ve been here a thousand years and I haven’t erupted yet so maybe my eruption is very near and as you can see the trees and plants are starting to dry because of lack of soil and oxygen. The birds and some animals are starting to leave too because the carbon dioxide is starting to spread. There are a few earthquakes happening here too so I guess I need to say goodbye to you my friend. You’re my only family and you make me happy every time we talk. I hope you’ll have a safe life and another good mountain to live on. Your friend, Rupert.

“The telephone ring” story by Enzo Buncayo

It was a rainy friday night. Bella and Rafael were alone at their big house because their parents

were out for a late night meeting. Bella was only 14 years old and Rafael was only 12 years old.

When it was 8pm the telephone rang upstairs, Rafael answered it, it was their parents. His

parents told that they will be home late, like 11:30pm due of heavy traffic because some accident

happened in the freeway. Rafael immediately told her sister Bella of the news. At 8:30pm a

telephone rang in the living room. Bella answered it, there was a guy who asked her if she was

alone but Bella didn’t tell him because she doesn’t know him and that was a good move, then the

guy laughed in a mysterious way “mwuahahaha” and hung the phone up. Bella started to lock the

doors in the house. In the living room, in the kitchen and at the back. As you know Bella forgot to

lock one door in the house. at 9:00pm the man called again and told Bella “I will go there tonight,

Mwuahahha”. Bella told Rafael to stay at her side but didn’t tell him why because she doesn’t

want Rafael to be scared. They called their parents and told them that there is someone calling

and telling them that he’ll go to their house at the telephone.

17

Page 18: Wammagazine (2)

Their parents told them that they will do everything that they can do to come home soon and they

also said that call the cops if the man calls again, Bella answered yes in a soft voice. The

telephone rang again in 9:30pm, the man told them that he will be there soon. Bella told the man

“I warn you! We will call the cops if you don’t stop calling the telephone and pranking us.” Bella

immediately called the cops and told them that there is a man trying to go in their house and the

man will be there soon. At

9:45pm they heard a strange

sound upstairs, Bella

and Rafael was curious but

at the same time scared.

Bella told Rafael that he

needs to stay at his room

and lock the doors. Bella went

upstairs slowly and carefully then she saw the man smiling at him in a strange way and laughing

“mwuahaha” Bella ran as fast as a lightning bolt to go downstairs. After a few minutes the cops

arrived and arrested the man for harassment and disorderly conduct. At 10:30pm their parents

finally arrived and hugged their children as soon as they got out of the car.

No Worries

It’s a rainy Monday night and Rupert was late getting home. Rupert’s parents are starting to

get worried. They tried to call Rupert but he isn’t answering. They also tried to call Rupert’s

coach and asked him where Rupert went after the practice. His coach told his parents that

Rupert went out of the gym with his best friend Clint. After that, they called Clint. At first, Clint did

not answer the phone then there was a strange message in the answering machine. Rupert’s

best friend Clint said he hadn’t seen Rupert since they got off the Basketball gym after their

practice. Clint also said he saw Rupert with a bunch of boys dressed with big clothes. Rupert’s

parents told Clint to go to their house if he can because they are really worried. Clint told them

that he only recognized one boy from that group. He said it was Rupert’s old enemy. Rupert’s

parents went to the basketball gym. As they arrive, they saw a kid in the parking lot waiting for his

19

Page 20: Wammagazine (2)

ride. They asked the kid if he knows Rupert and where did he go. The kid told Rupert’s parents

that he thinks Rupert went inside a car with a bunch of boys. Rupert’s parents tried to call Rupert

again but Rupert did not answer. After a few minutes Rupert texted his parents that he’s on the

way home. Rupert came home by 12am and he has school at the morning. He’s dirty and wet.

His parents asked him what happened and why is he dirty. His parents also got mad. Rupert told

them that he went to a party with his friends without asking permission. Rupert said sorry and

promised that he won’t do it again. Rupert was grounded as a punishment and no video games

for a month.

  His only jacket….

After a long day in school a boy named Clint went to the Basketball court before

going home. He played basketball with his friends and he left his jacket in the side of the

court. After he played he noticed that his jacket is gone he tried to find it but he can’t.

He decided to tell his parents that he lost his jacket while playing basketball. While he

was going home he was getting nervous because that was his only jacket. When he got

home his parents got mad but they bought him another one.

  The Stinky Wastebasket

I was trying to throw something big in the wastebasket but it won’t fit so I tried pushing it with

my foot because I don’t want my hands to be dirty. It still won’t work so I tried putting effort and

putting all my force in it then it finally got in the wastebasket. The problem was my foot came in

23

Page 24: Wammagazine (2)

with it and I couldn’t take it out. It feels disgusting because the wastebasket is dirty and I was only

wearing my slippers. I tried pushing the wastebasket down and pulling my foot up but it won’t

work so I called my brother and he helped me. I got my foot out and it smells nasty. Good thing

my brother was there.
