Weir Public Library. The museum’s art committee features one of Mr. Haworth’s art students each year and the works of Anthony Sellitti were selected for this year’s event. Mr. Sellitti was born in Gallo, Italy in 1921 and immigrated to the United States, where he joined his parents at the age of 12. His family settled in the steel town of Weirton, where his award- winning talent came to light in the classroom of Art Instructor Robert Haworth. After his service in the Navy during WWII, he began a building construction career in Weirton, creating many beautiful facilities for businesses, homes, and churches. He retired af- ter 45 years in the construction business, and his ar- tistic talents blossomed as he pursued his boyhood passion of painting. WAMCC’s 2nd Annual Robert Haworth Art Exhibi-tion was held on October 16, 2010, at the Mary H.Weir Public Library. The museum’s art committeefeatures one of Mr. Haworth’s art students each yearand the works of Anthony Sellitti were selected forthis year’s event. Mr. Sellitti was born in Gallo, Italyin 1921 and immigrated to the United States, wherehe joined his parents at the age of 12. Over 300 people attended this year’s Art Exhibit and everyone had an enjoyable time(see commentary below).

On October 11, Joe DiAngelis of Weirton do-nated a plaque featuring a 1974 Weirton DailyTimes news article about Weirton’s first gradeschool, where his father and uncles attended.Joe also donated the Airlant Champions Boxingtrophy he received, while serving for the U. S.Navy. Joe was champion of his featherweightclass of all the aircraft carriers and bases. Thephoto below shows Joe receiving the trophy in1956. He served on the USS Hornet CVA 12

and USS Lake Cham-plain CVA 39. Mr.DiAngelis speakshighly of WAMCCand its efforts to pre-serve our area’s his-tory and culture. Weencourage all arearesidents to lend theirold photos to bescanned at WAMCCso they will be pre-served for future gen-erations.

Commentary about the Art ShowAll the attendees appeared to really have enjoyed them-selves at this year’s art exhibition. The Weirton Area Mu-seum and the community are most grateful for the op-portunity to show these examples of our local talent. Wethank the Mary H. Weir Public Library and its staff forallowing us to use their activity room for this event. Wethank Dr. Ray Greco, the WAMCC Art Committee, andthe Art Dept. of Weirton Woman’s Club GFWC.

On October 18, Steve Amendola, owner of Mar-land Heights Deli & More, donated several gro-cery items that were used as background in hisstore for the movie “Super 8,” which was filmedin Weirton these past couple months. You mayrecall several of these items that were sold backin 1979, which is the time period set for themovie, where the Marland Heights Deli is star-ring as the local 7-Eleven and Lillian HeightsPost Office. Steve Ivady, who works atWAMCC received the items for the museumfrom Steve Amendola. WAMCC President Den-nis Jones expressed his thanks and commentedthat the museum plans to have a special sectionfeaturing the Paramount Production, includingpictures, props, and signs that are in the movie.“Paramount has already donated to us a few cop-ies of the “Lillian Journal” newspaper and areconsidering donating several of the storefrontsigns, which their art department created for themovie set. WAMCC is most appreciative and weencourage other businesses and individuals in-volved in the movie to contribute items for usein our movie display.

Cathy’s Snack Shack - New Bright Spot in Downtown Weirton

Pictured above: Cathy and her husband Ron. Cathy is manager of “Cathy’s Homemade Pies andSandwiches” located at 3073 Main Street, Weirton. Her pie shop was converted to a diner named“Cathy’s Snack Shack” for the “Super 8” movie production and Cathy has decided to keep her businessappearing much the same as it did in the movie. Pictures on the wall (provided to Paramount by Weir-ton Area Museum) show 1970’s scenes of people in Weirton (Lillian, Ohio in movie). The table in frontwindow underneath the neon sign is known as the “Hero’s Table” in the movie.

Additional ContributionsMuseum President Dennis Jones has been in-formed by Paramount Pictures Location Man-ager, Demian Resnick, that WAMCC will soonreceive a monetary donation from Paramount in

appreciation for the contributions WAMCChas made to help with the movie production.Also, Grant Samson, Set Dresser for Para-mount Pictures, has provided Dennis withthree copies of the “Lillian Journal” newspaper,which was in several scenes in and aroundCathy’s Snack Shack. The Weirton Daily Timesand Steubenville Herald Star are arranging forWAMCC to display two newspaper vendingmachines like those in the movie (see photo >>>).

Cathy Adams, manager of “Cathy’s HomemadePies and Sandwiches,” is all smiles these days,especially since her place of business played amajor role in Paramount’s movie titled “Super8,” which is on track to be a Summer 2011blockbuster science fiction film. Cathy has de-cided to keep her place looking as it did in themovie, decorated with memorabilia and 1970’sWeirton photographs provided by WAMCC.Cathy has added autographed pictures of theParamount crew including J.J. Abrams, TommyGormley, Martin Whist, Demian Resnick, andJulian Ruhe. “Saturday I had people come herefrom New Alexandria (OH), Doddrige County(WV) and Lewiston (WV). Also, some local col-lege students requested to sit at the “Hero’s Ta-ble,” stated Cathy. Cathy offers her delicioushomemade pies and sandwiches, including thefamous Frank’s Frenchburger and Red Hot soldat the previous 2 “Frank’s” locations in Weirton.
