  • Waltz with Bashir

  • Waltz with Bashir was released in 2008 directed by Ari Folman, who is also known for The Congress

(2013) and Made in Israel (2001). For Waltz with Bashir the main theme was war, and heavily

depended upon the graphic novel style. The voices used in the films are real veterans from the

Lebanon invasion, including Ari Folman himself, Ron Ben-Yishai, Ori Sivan and Shmuel Frenkel.

The film consists of Folman interviewing other veterans in an attempt to re construct his memories

of the Lebanon invasion, after a friend tells him about his reoccurring nightmare, which made him

realise he couldnt remember anything from the war. The film uses the voices and names of the real

veterans in the war, and uses their genuine accounts of the war.

I think that the film was trying to show the world what really happened in the Lebanon Invasion,

there was conversation at some point during the film where a therapist mentions that a solider she

was treating tried to separate himself by pretending everything was from a war film, but the

camera broke and he was unable to pull himself away from the reality, and I think Folman uses a

similar technique for the audience, he uses animation to show the story but allows the audience to

believe it isnt real, and to then introduce real footage of the massacre aftermath pushes the

audience towards the reality of the subject. Which I think was done exceptionally well. The style of

the animation was bold and created a strong sense of atmosphere. I would recommend it to other

who are interesting in war films.
