We welcome your opinion Walpole town jetty

The concerns raised in recent Letters to the Editor

about the safety of the Walpole town jetty have been followed up by Cr David Tapley.

The concerns were raised with both the Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee and the Shire of Manjimup Council. Cr David Tapley said both the Committee and the Shire Council are going to look into the matter further.

Letters to the Editor

NBN network

Concerned by the TV adverts saying landline phones will have to be connected to the NBN I contacted our Federal MP, Rick Wilson, to point out that this would make the phones dependent on power and thus subject to failure in the event of a power outage. I suggested this could be a problem in areas similar to where I live which have no mobile coverage and NBN is delivered by satellite. We would lose both phone and Internet connection to the outside world at a time when we could be requiring assistance.

The reply I received from Mr Wilson’s office may be of interest to your readers:

“As you fall within the Satellite NBN footprint it is not necessary to connect your landline phone service to the NBN network unless you wish to.

The existing copper network will be maintained in all areas receiving satellite or fixed wireless NBN. Only areas that are connected to fibre to the node technology will be required to migrate their landline service over to the NBN network.

This is a common question our office receives, if you do hear of anyone with the same query please pass on this information.”

This is information in addition to the fact you reported in a recent issue that the Walpole area will not be required to connect for a long time. It seems we can all rest easy, and those of us with satellite NBN even easier.

The TV adverts should be corrected to make it clear that their message applies only to some areas of the country and not all, as they at present suggest.

Federal funding announced for South West Energy Experience The Shire of Manjimup have been successful recipients

of a $2,677,725 grant from the Federal Governments

Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), which will be

put towards the construction of the South West Energy

Experience, within the Manjimup Timber and Heritage

Park. Project funding partners also include $2,972,775

from the WA Governments Royalties for Regions

program and $300,000 from the Shire of Manjimup.

Shire President Paul Omodei said that it is exciting to

note that this grant represents the final piece of funding

to see the South West Energy Experience (SWEE)

constructed at a total cost of $5.95 million. “The

SWEE represents an important tourism and cultural

asset which will expand and improve regional visitor

and local experiences. The project will deliver a high

standard experience which will underpin the viability

of the broader Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park

and assist in driving tourism growth and economic

diversification within the South West of WA”.

The SWEE is a core component of the transformation

of the Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park into a

regional tourism precinct and central community hub.

It will be a multipurpose facility which incorporates a

new bespoke museum, café, function space and visitor

servicing centre. The location and unique

contemporary design of the SWEE will act as a portal

to the ten hectare park, providing visitors with open

access to the intergenerational adventure playground,

heritage buildings, exhibits dedicated to the rail,

agriculture and cottage industries, indigenous flora,

native bushland and the Sandra Donovan Sound Shell.

The museum will showcase the heritage and future of

energy through modern exhibitions, engaging displays

and interactive building features. The SWEE will

ensure the sustainability of the State Energy Heritage

Collection which has important aesthetic, historical and

social significance. It has significance at a national

level and at least one of the objects is considered rare

and valuable at an international level.

“The SWEE is at 50% design completion and will go

to Tender for final design and construct shortly.

Construction is scheduled for completion by December

2019. Preliminary feedback given indicated that the

funding proposal submitted by the Shire of Manjimup

was of an extremely high standard and this is testament

to the staff who worked on the grant submission” said

Cr Omodei.

Students practising for ‘Write A Book In A Day’. (Picture courtesy Debra Doust)

Cancer Fight goes by the book as Walpole students write a book in one day

On 21st August 2017 students from Walpole Primary School will write a book in one day for childrens’ cancer research.

It’s all part of the annual national “Write a Book in a Day” competition which is run by The Kids’ Cancer Project.

The school has entered two teams in the competition. Pupils will be given a brief and then within 12 hours write, illustrate, bind and submit a storybook of up to 5000 words. Each book is then donated to children undergoing treatment in hospitals around Australia.

Walpole Primary School invites any community members who are interested in writing to work in a team with other adults to create their own book. This will be a whole day activity 8:30am – 3:00pm. If you are keen to be involved please contact Ms Walker at school.

The Kids’ Cancer Project is an independent national charity supporting childhood cancer research. Since 1993, thanks to strong community support, the charity has contributed tens of millions of dollars to scientific studies to help children with many types of cancer.

In order to qualify for judging and have the chance to take out one of the coveted ‘bragging-rights’ awards, we will be raising money through our dress up day (22nd August) and a book swap/sale. Donations of books or cash are welcome. These can be left at the front office.

On-line donations can be made at

http://www.writeabookinady.com/teams/terrific-tingles http://www.writeabookinady.com/teams/walpole-wonders

The facts:

Childhood cancer is different to adult cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death of children

by disease. Three Australian families hear the words, “your

child has cancer” every day. Every year, 950 Australian children are

diagnosed with cancer.

LOOKING BACK……...with Molly

In 1983 our district was thrust into the limelight when the Barron Film Company literally took over the town of Walpole in order to produce a documentary on the Bellanger family.

The Walpole Hotel became the headquarters of the group and of course, there was a good deal of excitement throughout the district. A number of district residents became famous as actors practically overnight, animals from various properties were co-opted to play their part, and some farms became the sites for filming. Parts of the townsite featured backdrops used for scenes in the film. Reports filtered through of a number of amusing incidents which happened during filming!

The catering for morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea called on the expertise of the BTH Ladies Club who catered on location each day for fifteen days. The ladies were fortunate in being able to borrow a bus which was equipped with kitchen facilities, from Marlene and Peter Bidwell. Catering was actually just for those filming on location at the time and the film crew of course, but such were the meals being produced the ladies often had extras calling in when food was on hand!

This was an extremely interesting and exciting time for the district especially as it included the presence of actress June Salter in town. June actually discussed the Bellanger story with George Bellanger as a part of the documentary. She enjoyed the social side of the district and was found to be warm and friendly.

At the close of production, the district was treated to a free screening of the film titled River of Giants. As everyone walked out at the end of the evening the main observation was “What a picturesque and beautiful area we live in”.

Walpole Autumn Club ‘Christmas in August’ lunch Carpet Bowlers and Scrabblers from the Walpole Autumn Club, together with friends and partners, recently enjoyed an excellent “Christmas in August” lunch at the Walpole Hotel. Everyone was extremely well looked after by Dee, and thanks go not only to her but to chef Aaron for the very ‘moreish’ range of tasty tucker.

The club always welcomes new bowlers or Scrabble players (no experience needed!) and both are played at the Rec. Centre 1.00pm -3.00pm on Tuesdays. Bring a small plate and enjoy an after-play chat and cuppa.

Opening of K2tog Exhibition, 12th August 2017

“K2tog” a joint exhibition by the artistic directors of the Peaceful Bay Beanie Co, Jo Court and Sarah Walker, opened to great acclaim on Saturday evening.

More than 60 people attended the opening night celebrations at Petrichor Gallery in Walpole and were thrilled to see textile works presented in a new and contemporary form.

Sarah and Jo have cleverly turned everyday objects into pieces of art. Chandeliers, cutlery, chairs, cushions and candelabras are embellished with bold combinations of colours and texture. Knitted beanies, in the primary shades of the rainbow are framed to create a beautiful wall of colour. Iconic colourful, quirky beanies and tea cosies stand alongside giant knitted moths in this rich world of wool.

Sarah grew up in a farming household where making and creating was a necessity and valued activity. In 2001, Sarah, a primary school teacher, and her husband moved to the south coast of WA to give their children a country upbringing similar to the one they both enjoyed.

In 2003, Sarah began The Peaceful Bay Beanie Co., a small hand knitting based business when she was a stay-at-home mother to three children. Jo Court joined Sarah in The Peaceful Bay Beanie Co. as a partner in 2007. Many local knitters assist the company to maintain a good quantity of beanies.

Jo has combined her love of knitting with her tertiary training of Bachelor of Applied Science in Home Economics (Curtin University) and Advanced Certificate of Fashion Design (Bentley College). Jo spent the following years learning and practising her skills.

This collaborative team have contributed to many exhibitions over the years including their successful entries in the Alice Springs Beanie Festival (2010-2017), Hit Me Baby (Great Southern Art Trail 2010), Mad Hatters Tea Party (Great Southern Art Trail 2009), Walpole Art in Action (2008) and Dreams of the Bay (Peaceful Bay 2005-2006).

The exhibition is at Petrichor Gallery, 8 Nockolds Street, Walpole and will remain on show until the 10th September.
