co.uk2012 is about celebration with The Diamond Jubilee and The Olympic Games, and there is a lot to be very positive about. Wallpaper plays an interesting role in celebration and there are some wonderful designs celebrating all things British - both royal and sporting.

I have always preferred to have my cuphalf full, as life - although gloomy atthe moment - is what you make it. In my own home, I have a Wall Words mural in my kitchen, the heart of the home, with the statement “it’s your life, make it great”; a bit corny perhaps but something I strongly believe in. There are lots of fun statements to choose from in ‘Wall Words Design’ on our website, so be bold and say something about how you feel!

My home is a statement about my family and who we are. It’s a safe haven to return to at the end of each day and I love it. When life is grey, colour plays a massive part in lifting our mood. Choosing colour is a very personal thing and so in this issue we have given you some ideas on the psychology of colour, and how and why it can in uence how you feel. This year it’s all about colour, so be bold and experiment!

At wallpaperdirect we strive to bring our customers the widest range of wallcoverings, and we have some fabulous papers from some very talented British designers on the website. It’s interesting to see through sales how quality is so important to our customers. If we are going to decorate, we want to use the best we can a ord.

We love bringing you the most up to date wallpapers and Spring is a fabulous time for the launch of new collections. We have features on hot new designs from the leading design houses from the UK, USA and Europe.

Thank you to those readers who came up with name suggestions for our Albany paint colours. Vicky Machirant from Pestonpans in Edinburgh was our prize winner and the colours can be viewed on www.designerpaint.co.uk.

Vicky won the spa break and the loan of the Kia car, so a big thank you to Kia for o ering such a wonderful prize.

Make 2012 a colour “full” year and enjoy your decorating!

Jeff Banks launches a unique collection of eco wallpapers with wallpaperdirect. The team discover that whilst they’re undeniably ‘green’ the desirable designs are also available in an array of colours and embellished with lavish metallics.

I f you thought ‘eco’ had to be bland, think again. Long gone are the days of a restricted palette of muted, earth

tones and humble designs. Je Banks’ Ports of Call Arteco collection shows that you can have it all - sophisticated, glamorous design, with seriously green credentials.

This is a collection brimming with bold styles including geometric designs, strong colourways in rich purples and deep inky blacks, nished with metallic inks and water colour e ects - perfect for those wanting to make a design as well as an eco statement. Whilst for those wanting to create a softer, more

understated look, the papers are also available in delicate creams and fresh limes which shimmer with hints of metallic. All of the papers for the collection are sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved forests. They are PVC free and contain no plasticizers. The coloured inks used in the printing process, including the metallics, are water based and residual ink waste is very closely monitored.

Je has taken as much care sourcing quality sustainable raw materials for his collection, as he has in ensuring that the 24 designs will not fall out of favour “to create a collection of designs that have longevity and do not risk change at the whims of fashion,” he claims. The result, is a collection which is desirable to the style savvy, but will also endure, all tapping into the eco idea that good design should last.

“We have created a ground-breaking sustainable yet fashion forward product,” says Je , who rmly believes that you do not have to compromise on colour, quality or performance to create a sustainable product, and we have to agree.

UNDERSTANDING COLOUR

We sell thousands of rolls of wallpaper every year at wallpaperdirect, and we’ve noticed that the majority of these are in the neutral colour range; shades of co ee and cream. These are easy on the eye and easy to live with, but decorating with colour allows us to express ourselves - and for the price of a couple of rolls of wallpaper - transforms our living spaces in ways that directly a ect how we feel in each room.

Colour has the ability to dictate our mood and impact on every aspect of our lives, from how we feel when we wear certain tones, to how we are motivated to shop by retailers.

Are you craving a calm bedroom or an energising offi ce? We show you how some simple colour psychology and the right wallpaper can dramatically change how your rooms look, and how you feel within their walls.

So why not use our essential guide to try some e ective use of colour in your home? Be a shade braver, start with a feature wall, or be inspired to colour all four walls in glorious colour!

Blue has a calm, soothing e ect, evoking a feeling of peace and order. Professional, traditional personalities are drawn to the wide range of blue shades from the palest baby

blue, perfect for a nursery, to the deepest indigo colours, for adding drama. Blue is suitable for any room, but be careful with the tone. Too grey and it will have cooling e ect, which is useful should you wish to cool a very hot sunny room but should be avoided otherwise.

Paired with white, blue gives a fresh feel to a kitchen-diner. With a greener tone, in shades of aqua and duckegg, it is perfect for a restful bedroom. Patterns containing shades of orangeinject warmth to the overall palette, whilst shades of mauve or lilac add a cooler note of coordination. New this season is a trend towards darker shades of blue, creating cosy, sophisticated interiors that envelop, when teamed with dark accessories.

Yellow is the colour of sunshine and energy, perfect for adding light and warmth to rooms, especially those with a cool aspect. It is also the colour to complement bold and vibrant personalities who want to shout “look at me, I’m happy and proud of my home” or make a 'wow' statement.

Surprisingly versatile, yellow lends itself to both contemporary and traditional schemes. Bright chartreuse is very on-trend and is beautiful tempered with soft dove greys. Sunny yellow paired with shades of apple, chocolate

Green is the colour of nature in all its myriad tones and from zesty limes to luscious dark forest greens, there is a shade for everyone. As in the natural world, it is a colour that co-ordinates with every other in the rainbow, if you choose the right shade. This makes green the rst easy step from using safe neutrals.

The palest greens can lift and bring a fresh, calm energy to any room. Green is useful to neutralise sweet

10tones such as candy pink, preventing them becoming too saccharine for bedrooms and living rooms. Rich jades and deep jewel shades can create a truly stand-out feature wall.

Red in nature alerts us to danger and for millennia we have been conditioned to avoid it, but in reality the many shades of red, mulberry, pink and purple are perfect for contemporary living.

Passion, warmth and energy can be added to a room by using the correct shade of this vibrant colour. Traditionally it has often been used in the dining room to create comfort and an inviting atmosphere when entertaining guests. As contemporary living trends have moved towards more open-plan living, red too, has moved very successfully into the main living area.

If your style is modern, then using deep reds on just one wall and accenting the colour in soft furnishing and accessories is e ective without being overpowering. It is also useful for creating

TRENDS

With 2012 marking Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee and London playing host to The Olympic Games, it’s no wonder our interiors are exuding patriotism this year. We’ll also be celebrating another key trend for interiors - a soft, sweet palette inspired by the fashion catwalks. Which will you choose?

Best of BritishFrom retro chintz to eccentric prints, this trend embodies the true Britishspirit in striking and courageous fashion. Playing with familiar British motifs -poppies, dandelions and the iconic post box - palettes of reds, whites and blues create a celebratory canvas.

The result? Nostalgic designs mixed with quirky, bold colours and motifs that will see you ying the ag for your country.

Candy ColoursSweeten up and add a touch of playfulness to your walls with a colour palette that looks good enough to eat. Echoing the ice cream shades and pastel tones that dominated this spring/summer’s fashion catwalks, pale pinks, blues and yellows mix with intriguing patterns and designs to create popular choices for interiors as the warmer months approach.

Soften up an all white canvas with pretty pastel xtures or add a vibrant pop to a room by clashing bold colours and patterns with neutral pale hues. Alternatively, use candy colours collectively to add warmth to a space for a look that is light and inviting.

The Bold & The BeautifulJocelyn Warner’s nature inspired designs have been gracing our walls since 1999. We discover the secrets behind the design and production of her new, distinctive collection.

WisteriaAs the trend for orals continues to blossom in our homes, Wisteria o ers a trailing repeat pattern that’s “quite a nostalgic, cottage garden image, but graceful,” Jocelyn says. Having photographed a beautiful wisteria tree she passed daily on her way to work for two years, she knew that she “wanted a tonal e ect in the branches, leaves and ower heads.” Up close, the print is incredibly detailed. This has been achieved by ‘gravure’, one of Jocelyn’s favourite printing techniques which “generates a print with a hand blocked feel, for a ne, tonal e ect.”

DandyDandy was inspired by a single stem peony given to Jocelyn by a friend, and a set of 1950s oral plates she discovered at a ea market. The two elements combine “to create a design that has a strong sense of identity without being retro,” she explains. To ensure that the owers did not appear at, she used ‘surface printing’ “one of the oldest methods and one that most closely resembles hand block printing - adding a richness and depth which can’t be achieved by any other form of production.”

Luxury, elegance and quality are words we associate with Zo any here at wallpaperdirect. A British company who looks to its unique historical archive and beyond our shores for inspiration, and is loved by interior designers and discerning homeowners all around the world. So how did this come to be the case?

Founded in 1983 as a specialist wallpaper company, Zo any’s debut collection was based on

wallpaper documents from Georgian Temple, Newsam House in Yorkshire. The success of the launch led the company to accumulate a unique archive of documents from the 17th to the 19th centuries, from which their designers rst started producing wallpapers in a small hand-screen printed works, recreating designs with an aged look and quality materials. It was not long before Zo any’s wallpapers were featured in many traditional houses and luxury hotels around the world.

In more recent years, Zo any has sought projects which have allowed them to draw upon their heritage. Yet, whilst the design team continue to reference their archive to produce designs with a timeless appearance, many of their latest collections are innovative interpretations, with international colour palettes and a wider source of inspiration, from ne art to antiques. This, combined with cutting edge techniques employed to print their wallpapers in England, ensure that their new collections - such as Akita inspired by Japanese craftwork, with its bespoke embossing and 3D e ect - have timeless style and appeal for contemporary interiors.

Beautifully SimpleFlorals needn’t always be delicate or busy. Folia, the new collection of predominantly botanical wallpaper designs from Harlequin, shows that they can be striking, vibrant and refreshingly clean.

If you’re craving an uplifting and invigorating look for your home this Spring/Summer, then Harlequin’s new collection Folia, could provide the perfect inspiration. Taking its cue from nature’s bounty, the latest wallpaper collection from the Harlequin studio depicts luscious fruits, meandering leaf trails and dramatic blooms, bringing a new vivacious take on subjects that have long inspired design houses.

Having been in uenced by the clean style of 20th Century Scandinavian textiles, these designs are con dent and clearly drawn - perfect for those seeking unfussy, uncluttered and contemporary patterns for their walls.

This non-woven wallpaper range, printed in the UK, also encompasses co-ordinating stripes and sophisticated checks, providing even more choice and options for creativity. Standing alone, or perfectly complementing the botanical prints, they also work brilliantly for creating a harmonious interior that ows from room to room.

Lusciously coloured, the Folia collection of wallpapers brings life to interiors with a fresh, desirable palette. Lively mimosas, sa rons and tomato tones, rich forest, olive and midnight hues and clean dove, biscuit and seal shades are just some of the choices.

Fresh Inspiration

The world of interiors is buzzing with excitement about Scion - the new brand whose name translates as a ‘young shoot or twig’ - from the long established Harlequin Group. As Scion’s debut collection ‘Melinki’ arrived at wallpaperdirect for its launch this April, we saw that that the eclectic patterns and clean colours of the wallpapers are as refreshing as the new season itself. This, of course, is no mistake. Scion is

aimed at home lovers wanting to buy innovative, a ordable design that’s stylish and trend savvy. Yet whilst the Melinki collection of wallpapers are cutting edge, it’s easy to see how they will also have lasting appeal. Inspired partly by contemporary Scandinavian style and partly by mid-century archive designs, the fresh, uncomplicated papers hit a modern tone of retro - a style with a modern timelessness.

Affordable, fashion forward and packed with British innovation, how could we resist the debut collection from Scion?

SCION

Forward thinking, for Scion, is not just focused on how their products look, but how they are made. The brand is proud to be printing and manufacturing all of its wallpapers in the UK and has rm commitments to sustainability and environmental initiatives.

So just one question... with colour groups that include ‘coastal calm’, ‘bakelite brights’ and ‘urban neutrals’ with which to create a diverse range of moods... which one to choose?

Easy as ABCThere’s no easier way of creating a fantasy world for your little treasure than with wallpaper. The brands at wallpaperdirect offer endless inspiration for kids rooms that will appeal to all tastes and budgets. Here’s how you can make it child’s play...

A child’s bedroom is a very special space that should inspire their imagination and creativity. There are so many wonderful wallpapers which can help transform their room into a world far away from reality and one they want to spend time in, that it is easy to ensure that the room they play and sleep in does just that.

Murals of their favourite characters from books, lms or television can create a great impact, whether you use one as the starting point from which to theme a room top to toe, or simply to cover one feature wall. Using stickers and height charts will engage them and stimulate learning, and are an e ective way of adding character and colour when you don’t want to completely redecorate.

Redecorating, however, is often great fun, and if they are old enough, do try and engage children in the creative process - there are not many who cannot give a quick answer on their favourite colour and that is a good starting point. If you can include them in helping, it is enjoyable for both of you and will enable them to take quickly to the nished scheme. Yet equally there is nothing quite like the surprise bedroom, particularly if a new baby is due and you want to make siblings feel special as they move into a more grown up space.

What can be forgotten is that creating a new children’s room is hugely enjoyable for adults. It’s a place where you can be creative and adventurous too. Take yourself back to your own childhood and the kind of bedroom you wish you’d had. Whether it was being a princess, a pirate or feeling more grown up than your siblings, try and remember what it was like to be a child and draw upon your own memories, as well as planning a

scheme to accommodate your child’s passions and personality. Not only will you get maximum enjoyment from creating a scheme that you will both adore, but it will ensure that the room feels very much part of your home.

To create a successful overall scheme, think ahead as to which colours and motifs will complement your child’s favourite things. For some, the collection helps us identify the fact that we do gravitate towards certain tones and con rms the paper that will pull many of our most loved pieces together. For others, Colour For Living helps us see how to e ectively build a completely new look - showing how the cool palette of Classic Blue Colours are mixed with just a hint of warm linen tones, or how the perfect pattern and delicious ice cream hues add interest and balance to the Pretty Pink Colours palette.

So if you seek the con dence to experiment with graphic motifs or larger scale orals than you might have dared, or want to use rich or bright tones in the clever ways that designers know how, why not let the experts at Sanderson, transform you into a colour expert at home? They’ve even printed the wallpaper collection on non-woven wallpaper, to make them easier to hang, less prone to shrinkage and ensure that the end result is professional.

A Very British PaletteThe new collection of 72 stunning paint colours developed byMarston & Langinger in Norfolk, have us yearning to re-decorate in their high quality and eco friendly hues. Here’s why...

Big on quality - from colour through to nish - the rich colour palette of Marston & Langinger’s new paint range has been inspired by the company’s heritage. Dating back to when M&L was founded by carpenters who made traditional ne furniture some 30 years ago, this very British colour card has taken its cue from our architecture, gardens and interior furnishings. What could feel more English than walls painted in the chalky cool green of Cucumber, the beautiful grey of Drizzle or the instantly cheering Wimpole Poppies?

Both the interior and exterior ranges are water based, easily applied with a self-priming, two coat system and contain enduring, eco ingredients - all designed to give a professional nish at home.

The interior range of paints are eco friendly and odour free, yet surprisingly durable. To our knowledge they are also the rst to allow stains to be washed o walls without colour rub-o too, making them perfect for use in stylish yet busy homes with children and animals.

For exteriors, the paint has been devised to be used on wood, stone, brick and plaster, and uses high quality binders which make it resilient to fading, cracking and peeling. This promotes a lifespan of approximately 12 years... although we know that we couldn’t resist trying out a new look before then!

Top Tips for Wallpapering!

There are lots of different grades of lining paper to choose from, but the higher the grade of paper, the thicker it is and the thicker it is, the more it will cover up imperfections. The thickest paper is 2000 grade.

There are ‘paste the wall’ lining papers which should be used under ‘paste the wall’ papers.

“Women know that a beautiful dress will not look its best without good underwear and I think of lining paper as underwear for wallpaper!” says wallpaperdirect’s Editor, Melanie Adams. The right lining paper provides the perfect foundation on which to dress your walls seamlessly.

There are wide width linings called Wallrock, which are up to 1m wide. These cover and reinforce problem surfaces such as cracked and damaged plaster and even wood panelling. They are a ‘paste the wall’ product, very easy to hang and a great base for wallpapering.

In addition, there is a product called Thermal liner, which is

75cm wide and is, again, a ‘paste the wall’ lining but has a thick pad behind it, which helps to keep the room warmer. This is particularly e ective on walls of solid construction where it can reduce room warm-up times by up to 65%.

Thermal liner works by creating an air barrier between the surface of the wall and the surface of the wallpaper. It thereby restricts heat loss into the wall during the warm-up phase of the room and has the added bene t of reducing cold air currents which often make a room feel colder than it actually is. Thermal liner contains no PVC or breglass. Not only does it allow walls to breathe but it also e ectively reduces, and in many cases eliminates, conditions that promote unsightly and unhealthy mould growth by maintaining the wall surface temperature above the point at which mould promoting condensation can form.

Thermal liner can be applied over old rough plaster or even old fashioned textured walls that are in sound condition, creating a smooth base suitable for the application of paint or wallpaper.

LOGOS TO LOOK OUT FOR...

If you’re looking to buy a Wallrock Thermal lining paper, these logos con rm at a glance for you that the paper has energy saving, mould resistant, and

hypoallergenic properties.

This illustration shows how Wallrock Thermal lining paper works and is a graphic representation

of how using the thermal liner reduces heat loss through the wall from 70% to 20%.

TOP TIPS • Before you hang your lining paper, it is still vital torub the walls down to make them smooth! Lining paper is not an alternative to good, initial preparation.

• Always use the same adhesive for both the lining paper and the top paper as the adhesive needs to be chemically compatible. The bond to the wall needs to be as strong as the wallpaper to the lining paper.

Founded in 1886, Thibaut is known today for its exceptional American designs. The company distinguishes itself with inspiring colour palettes, fresh interpretations of classic motifs and exclusive artwork created by an in-house design team.

American InfluenceRenowned for its exceptional wallpaper designs, it’s less well known that Thibaut is the oldest continuously operating wallpaper company in the USA. We explore their long established, but fresh take on American style.

Their fresh colours and creative use of pattern deliverthe classic American New England look, with clean lines, white furnishings and wooden oors. The beautiful blue design from their Seaside collection is typical of the style.

Thibaut’s new Jubilee collection is a chic gathering of patterns and colours. Painted in pastoral hues, worldly motifs are translated upon sleek, tactile grounds in a great array of textures, shapes and styles. A cornerstone of this collection is Cayman, which was derived from an antique crewel and translated into wallpaper. Conversely, Alexa is a genial large scale bloom on both wallpaper and printed fabric, loosely coloured with an ikat inspired texture. Amongst many others, Thibaut also boasts a selection of novelty designs, perfect for bringing a sense of fun to your home, without compromising on style or quality.

The challenge with using these wallpapers in British homes is that they come in American sizes; and so require a little more thought to measure up. The rolls are 68.5 cm wide and only 8.22 m long, but with the help of an experienced decorator, this should not stop you from choosing and enjoying Thibaut’s unique designs.

A Taste of the ExoticAcclaimed designer Hanna Werning launches her innovative new wallpaper collection with Swedish wallcoverings brand Boråstapeter, bringing exciting and ecclectic designs to wallpaperdirect.

It’s always a pleasure to bring you the latest from the design world, and our explorations into hunting down the new and innovative have recently led us to Scandinavia. Here, the Stockholm based designer Hanna Werning is about to launch her third wallpaper collection for Nordic wallpaper manufacturer Boråstapeter, bringing something new and innovative to wallpaperdirect - a collection based on exotic and tropical motifs as well as Nordic nature - with stunning e ect.

These are wallpapers depicting jungle vines weaving through tropical coloured ora and where giant plant life dwarves exotic birds and animals in vibrant jungle scenes. For the Stockholm based designer, there are inevitably Nordic in uences too. “I get my inspiration from all over. It can come from historical impressions, eye-catching experiences, memories from a journey, a growing plant, gures uttering past me on the internet, a worn-out paperback or a museum visit,” she says.

With its bold use of colour and playful use of scale, this is a con dent collection designed to trick the eye and entertain - perfect for homeowners looking to bring a strong, stylish design statement to their home.

Making such a exciting collection accessible and desirable, can only be achieved by a designer with real talent and Hanna’s credentials t the bill. With a degree in graphic design from London’s Central St Martins College of Art & Design, Hanna has since gone on to design a broad range of products for leading fashion brands such as Anna Sui and design companies such as Ikea. She also won Elle Decoration’s Interior Design Award in 2004, 2007 and 2008. Yet despite her diversity, Hanna’s speciality is producing patterns for fabric and wallpaper, which of course, we are happy about. Although we can’t help but wonder how she could possibly top this explosive new collection.

Highly Prestigious Trust the experts with 25 years experience, to come up with a strong, inspiring new collection of lavish wallpapers.

If you like your home to make a statement, then the new collectionby Prestigious will dress your walls to impress.

Bold, dramatic and fun, the new In The Picture range o ers six uncompromising wallpaper designs which can be tempered with a semi-plain vinyl in an array of complementary mid or neutral tones.

These are ‘paste the wall’, non-woven wallpapers for domestic as well as commercial use, and it’s easy to see how they would bring a touch of individuality and life to a variety of spaces.

The lead design is Mirror Mirror a repeat motif of a rococo picture frame which works as well in impactful large scale - such as a hallway or dining room - as it does in bringing personality and opulence to a smaller space such as a WC. Using the blank spaces as picture frames in a bedroom or study, would create a very personal feature wall.

No less dramatic is Look, a geometric circle design with a retro feel which is stunning in metallic silver on black. Yet for those seeking a softer interpretation, this paper is transformed when seen in the colourways depicting muted matt circles on lustre backgrounds in single colours such as mist, which have a gentle yet contemporary edge.

As an enduring brand who relish producing designs that surprise, Prestigious have paid close attention to the nish of these papers, so that they also delight. Their clever use of matt and gloss inks as well as metallics, really bring these eye catching designs to life.
