Wallem has adjusted how we present ourselves and approach our business, and our recent accolades from the shipping community tells us we are on the right track. We have received recognition from our seafarers with the ISWAN (International Seafarers Welfare Association Network) Shipping Company of the Year Award, which is nominated by seafarers. On the same day our peers recognised us with the 2014 Seatrade Ship Manager of the Year Award. And then our client NYK Line granted us two Car Carrier of the Year Awards and the IBIS Award for bunker and idle time saving. It was akin to a 360 performance review. It was a great motivator for the company, making staff proud to be part of the Group.

We are building our business with new clients signing Shipman contracts with Wallem, including Höegh Autoliners and Frontline AS. Working with such highly reputable shipping companies makes us all at Wallem very proud.

Delivering the US Navy’s agency and husbandry needs was another great achievement for Wallem, with our Ship Agency business teaming with MLS in delivering services to the US Naval fleet calling at Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. With little time on their hands for planning, and on top of a chocka-block cruise season schedule, the boarding agents, operations teams and finance teams did a stellar job.

CEO’s Message

These achievements are possible because of our sea and shore staff who are consummate professionals. We are continuing to build our management capacity with internal promotions, focused training including a management training scheme, and new staff bringing new experiences and energies into the Group. You can also see some of the leading Wallem seafarers in our nominees for Wallem Seafarer of the Year on page 14 of this issue of True North.

With these and the numerous talented people in Wallem’s ranks I can foresee many more accolades coming Wallem’s way.

Regards,

Simon Doughty

Wallem Ship Management Managing Director Raymond Mc Namara said the award was a tribute to the hard work of Wallem’s sea and shore staff.

“Every day our seafarers are working hard to deliver safe and efficient vessel operations alongside their colleagues in the technical, fleet personnel and safety teams,” said Ray Mc Namara.

Wallem wins Most Compassionate Employer of Indian Seafarers Award

The Government of India has recognised Wallem Group’s role in seafarer welfare by awarding the company with the Most Compassionate Employer of Indian Seafarers award as part of the National Maritime Day celebrations on 5 April 2014.

This is the third time in the past six years Wallem has received the Award.

“We are proud to receive the award for Most Compassionate Employer of Indian Seafarers. About a third of Wallem’s 12 000 seafarers are from the Indian Subcontinent and we are grateful for the recognition from the sea staff and local maritime community,” said Raymond Mc Namara, Wallem Ship Management Managing Director.

Wallem Ship Management India’s Managing Director, Captain Navin Passey, says the award is a proud achievement for the staff.

“Wallem’s local staff across the country respect and care for our seafarers throughout their career with Wallem, and provide support for family members at home,” said Captain Passey.

“We have been opening more local centres to be closer to our sea staff, including Dehadrun, Lucknow, Navi Mumbai, Cochin and Patna, in addition to Wallem’s five key India offices in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigarh and Chennai.

“The Women of Wallem chapters are also active in the community, providing an important support network for our seafarers’ families, along with charitable activities.”

Double the recognition:

Wallem receives two awards from NYKWallem Ship Management has received twice the recognition from NYK, winning Car Carrier of the Year Awards for two vessels in management, and the Innovative Bunker and Idle time Saving (IBIS) Award for all NYK container vessels in Wallem’s management.

“Recognition from our clients is very gratifying indeed, and in the case of NYK it is so rewarding to work alongside a company that is focused on getting the very best performance from its vessels and sea staff without sacrificing quality,” said Ray Mc Namara, Wallem Ship Management Managing Director.

“The awards are the result of a sustained effort throughout 2013 from all on board and ashore who dedicate themselves to achieving NYK and Wallem’s goals for cutting fuel consumption and reducing idle time.”

“I extend my congratulations to all crew who served, and are serving today, on the container vessels Izumo, Iwaki and NYK Daniella, and the car carriers Asian Leader and Cetus Leader.”

The current master of the Cetus Leader, Captain Arshad Umer, said the award was all down to team work.

“Vessel [crew] extended her heartfelt thanks to the whole team for their support without which such recognition cannot be achieved, and also extended our continual cooperation and understanding toward safe and efficient operations in future.”

NYK Line’s requirements for the recipients in the Car Carrier Awards are excellence in safety and bunker saving operations, no schedule delays, and no damage to cargo. The IBIS Award for container vessels is focused on saving fuel and reducing idle time.

Since the introduction of the awards, at least one car carrier managed by Wallem has received the Car Carrier of the Year Award every year, shared between seven vessels.

Failure to prepare is to prepare to fail – the naval ship agents’ mantraSince October 2013 Wallem has teamed with MLS, the husbanding contractor to deliver services to the US Navy, providing agency and husbandry services to destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarines, cruisers and many other vessel types visiting ports in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Over the last six months Wallem’s teams have handled 69 calls, the lion’s share being handled by Frankie Tan’s Singapore team.

“We have had 35 US Navy vessel calls in Singapore and the team has done well in managing each of them professionally,” said Frankie Tan, General Manager, Wallem Shipping Singapore.

“The vessels called at the Changi Naval Base and Sembawang Naval Base, which is a real change in location for our boarding agents who spend much of their time at the cruise terminals, commercial terminals or on board vessels at the anchorages.” Wallem thailand’s Montri, Pichet and tong on board

Dickson Chin, Managing Director Indo-China, said preparation was the key. “If you can handle US Navy visits successfully, you can do any navy call,” Dickson said.

“The most pressing requirement was the security arrangements, and the need to have every service and provider vetted and approved well in advance. In addition, the need for a 24 hour operation for transport, including ship to shore and town drop-offs made careful preparation essential.

“By working together and sharing knowledge within the Wallem network, we could prepare and keep each other informed of requirements for a consistently high level of service at each port.”

The feedback from the vessels’ crew have been very positive with feedback survey comments including: “Dickson and his team set the benchmark for professionalism.” and “Wallem Shipping integrated seamlessly with our schedule and key players for enjoyable port visits.”

Positive outlook for European hubEurope has major strengths and advantages in the shipping industry which may have been overlooked with the rapid growth of the Asian maritime sector. Europe is China’s largest trading partner. The countries in the European Commission, along with Norway, are the centre of global ship owning and operations. And Greece recently overtook Japan once more as the world’s largest ship owning nation.*

With these optimistic attributes in hand, Wallem’s European hub celebrates its new office location in Hamburg and readies for growth. In June the Wallem Europe office will host a party in its new office at Burchardstrasse, welcoming clients, suppliers and key stakeholders of the business.

In preparations for the party, True North magazine asked the senior team at Wallem Europe to share a bit about their services and how they see the future for Europe’s shipping businesses.

PEOPLE

Atul Sachar, Tanker Fleet Manager We continuously strive to serve the customer, keeping vessels available for trade without any delay including quickly responding to queries from Oil companies into vessels in management to ensure that the vessels secure business in the highly competitive maritime market.

For tankers to be able to trade to their full potential we need positive results during all inspections from Oil majors and PSC to terminals and other third parties. We guide the ships’ staff and support them to ensure positive inspections.

A priority for the European shipping industry should be to maintain an attractive framework for quality shipping and quality operators in Europe, making the maritime profession appealing to young people both as seafarers and shore-based support.

Ulrich Paulsdorff, Managing Director Wallem Europe The European shipping industry is in a difficult situation and I think we will see more players and old names leaving the market. Those who have had a prudent approach to ordering during the boom will survive and have better times ahead. In the long run fundamental market developments, namely the further rising demand for transport services from and to Europe, will prevail.

After working at Wallem for more than three years, I can confidently say clients can expect to work with experienced and dedicated staff with support in all parts of the world. They can rely on a vast experience of over 40 years in ship management and the combined problem solving capacity of chief engineers and master mariners working in Wallem in different positions and offices. Every customer can be assured that Wallem is delivering to the highest safety standards.

The team in the Hamburg office is working hard to meet the sometimes quite different needs of our clients. Everybody in the office knows that we do not compromise on the Wallem safety and quality standards. We are in the service industry after all, and a happy client is the best advertisement we can make.

Introducing… Dave Martin, Head of Ship Management, Europe David Martin joins Wallem’s Europe hub in early July, bringing a wealth of ship management experience to Wallem. Following a senior engineering career at sea, he has developed his experience ashore, working with a variety of vessel types and in various global shipping hubs. David joined VShips/Acomarit in 1998 and left in 2013 as Fleet Director, Hamburg where he oversaw a significant growth in the managed fleet. Most recently he has been working for Teekay, Glasgow.

wiebke Schuett, Fleet Personnel ManagerWe have global expertise and presence which sets Wallem apart in Europe. Our fleet personnel service works with committed, knowledgeable and loyal seafarers who are focused on delivering international standards on board. Our team has a close relationship with the technical department’s superintendents so we can work together to identify any issues early and address them quickly. With our base in Hamburg we can maintain good relationships with European clients in their time zone, along with the vessels sailing in this region. Our location also positions us well for working with charterers and oil majors.

Wallem’s range of services allows us to be flexible and with the European market predicted to consolidate further, we are in a good position to respond quickly to different client needs at short notice.

ralf Veigel, Dry Cargo Fleet ManagerOur clients want to work with competent people. They want to be sure we know exactly what we are doing. It’s all about good performance, reliability and a service attitude. We are grateful for the good working relationships we have [with clients]. I joined Wallem in January 2010 because I wanted to work with a management team that has foresight and firm performance.

Our clients are particularly pleased with our service and transparency. We cooperate closely with our clients and keep them in the loop. Our clients choose us because they like the way we work.

Europe is an exciting shipping location. As ship managers here in Europe, we’re keeping our eyes open and are ready to respond promptly to increasing ship management opportunities. We have the best people on our team. We’re sure to make a positive and lasting impact.

Jude Dias, Safety Manager I started my career with Wallem as Chief Officer in January 1990, and was in command from 1994. My experiences since since then with the Group have shown me that everyone is committed to meeting the needs of our customers and continuous improvement. I support and lead the team in achieving great results against international standards for ISM, ISOs, TMSA audits and the Green Award. These are validation that our team is experienced, resourceful and proactive in delivering for our customers.

Analysts at JP Morgan say shipping will improve this year in line with their prediction of a rebound in global growth and an emergence from recession for the Eurozone. Already there are some signs of recovery in the shipping market in recent months, with a rebound in both dry bulk and tanker rates. Let’s hope this continues!

farewell…Captain Joe Corcoran In May we bid farewell to Captain Joe Corcoran as he begins his retirement. Joe established Wallem’s Germany base in 2004 growing the company to become a fully operational management company which is capable of managing a wide range of vessel types. Thanks to Joe’s effort and engagement, Wallem has become a well reputed part of the German shipping community. Joe was hailed the “Captain of Calm” by DNV for his role in incident management response and he leaves behind a team of professionals who have learnt so much from his experience and knowledge.

Ain’t no mountain high enough, or so the song goes, but how about no island too far? In this case Diana Ross would be singing about Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, a volcanic land mass covered in glaciers south south-west of Cape Town, South Africa, and considered to be the most remote island on Earth.

Sounds like an excellent location for an automated weather station, until it needs an upgrade. This was the Norwegian Polar Institute’s challenge to Wallem’s South Africa team; deliver a new automated weather station, 10 Norwegian station installation experts and a helicopter safely to the island from Cape Town. Nils Warner, Director of Wallem South Africa, said the team eagerly accepted the job and started work on overcoming the island’s remote location.

“We chartered the SA Agulhas to load the new weather station and helicopter in Cape Town and sail with the installation experts on board to Bouvet Island,” Nils said.

“The SA Alghus is the South African Maritime Safety Authority’s dedicated training vessel with 80 cadets on board. The weather station was built in ten days and all crew and installers returned safe and sound to Cape Town.”

The Wallem name is quite new to South Africa, with the Cape Town and Durban offices opening their doors in May 2013, and Nils says the Wallem reputation is helping to open doors.

“Word quickly got out that Wallem has a presence in South Africa and our broking and agency services are growing in demand, particularly in the oil and offshore business, in addition to the Antarctic logistics for the Norwegian Polar Institute,” Nils said.

“We are also proud of our achievements with ship to ship transfers. A recent job was transferring 45 000 tonnes of gas oil from a mother ship to a smaller tanker for delivery to the Cape Town Refinery. Smit South Africa handled the transfer and we did the logistics.”

Wallem’s reach in Africa also includes Mozambique, Namibia and Mauritius where the team have good sub agent connections and a Wallem officer can attend a port call in these countries if it’s needed. Nils has already volunteered for the Mauritius jobs – an island not too far.

Wallem Ship Management Managing Director Ray Mc Namara said Höegh would be a feather in Wallem’s client cap.

“Höegh is such an extremely well-known and reputable ship owner in Europe and Asia, and we are very proud to efficiently and safely manage their ships,” said Mr Mc Namara.

“The signing of the ship management contract is an important occasion for Wallem and by delivering reliable services from Hong Kong, Singapore and Hamburg, we can continue to attract reputable ship owners.”

Wallem will take over vessel management of the nine vessels in a staged process from May 2014.

With the addition of these new vessels, Wallem Ship Management will be managing 30 Ro/Ros or PCC/PCTCs for ship owners such as NYK Line, and the Singapore fleet will grow to 22 vessels.

Höegh Autoliners and Wallem sign Shipman dealHöegh Autoliners AS signed a nine vessel ship management deal with Wallem Ship Management on 7 May at the Höegh headquarters in Oslo, Norway.

The ship management agreement cements a deal between the companies, with Wallem delivering technical and crew management to nine PCTCs from its Singapore base.

Captain Deepak Honawar, Wallem Singapore Managing Director, Simon Frank, Wallem Ship Management Commercial Director, and Jude Dias, Wallem Europe Safety Manager, represented Wallem at the signing ceremony.

Wallem broadened its ship management business to Singapore in 2013, complementing the company’s existing ship agency services in the city state, providing an attractive option for ship owners looking for access to Singapore’s maritime business advantages.

P&O returns to Myanmar after 40 yearsLocal knowledge and experience is proving the difference in new and exciting cruise locations in Asia. Countries such as Myanmar (Burma) are growing in popularity and are increasingly added to itineraries for a richer Asian sailing experience.

Wallem Ship Agencies hosted the first P&O cruise call to Yangon, Myanmar, in more than 40 years in February. Wallem cruise expert Dickson Chin said the guests and crew experienced the advantage of Wallem staff with cruise expertise and local knowledge.

“Our team plans well in advance for all calls, working closely with local customs and immigration authorities and other stakeholders so there is a smooth experience for passengers and ship’s staff,” said Dickson.

Captain David Box of P&O’s MV Adonia wrote a message to Wallem’s Ship Agency team after the vessel’s call in Yangon highlighting the essential

role the Wallem team played in making the call successful for all.

“Thank you very much also for your personal attendance throughout the call, it was very reassuring to have that level of experience and advice available to us. As you personally experienced the feedback from our passengers has been wonderful, their visit to Yangon has been a highlight of the cruise to date.”

Opal Leader crew contribute to equipment and relationship studiesThe crew of the Opal Leader made their contribution to improving life at sea by hosting Research Associate Neil Ellis of the Seafarers’ International Research Centre.

Neil sailed with the crew of the Wallem-managed NYK car carrier for four weeks earlier this year, observing the seafarers during their work and speaking with them about life on board.

The research will contribute to two studies currently underway at the Seafarers’ International Research Centre at Cardiff University in the UK: Seafarers and Mandatory Equipment and Relationships Between Shore-side and Shipboard Personnel.

Neil says the research will assist in the development of recommendations to industry on the use of mandatory on board equipment and strategies to close the gap between ship and shore staff.

“The on-board research, in terms of the Mandatory Equipment project, will help us to build up a detailed picture of seafarers’ attitudes and experience of mandatory equipment on-board, which will allow us to make recommendations to companies about the kinds of strategies that might assist them in getting the best out of such equipment and its use,” said Neil.

“In terms of the Interaction Project [Relationships Between Shore-side and Shipboard Personnel], the on-board research allows us to examine the interactions and relationships that seafarers have with shore based personnel, so that we can consider ways in which these relationships might be improved/facilitated.”

The on board research with seafarers is the first stage in the projects.

“The research team between them has sailed

PEOPLE

on-board eight ships where they have conducted both observations and interviews. We are currently in the process of transcribing these interviews. The next stage of the project will be semi-structured interviews with shore side personnel.”

Despite a busy sailing schedule, the crew were happy to take time with Neil to discuss their work and life at sea. “…those on-board were happy for me to observe them undertake their daily roles, and would often explain to me what they were doing and the reasons for this. The crew were also genuinely interested in the research we were conducting and all were very willing to help, either through interviews, or just by general chatting about life at sea.

“The crew can also make a difference between a good and a not so good trip for us as researchers and happily the crew on-board the Opal Leader were some of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet on such trips.”

The Opal Leader and her crew gave Neil a real insight into today’s experience of life at sea, with crew internet and a great chief cook making a real difference to daily life.

Neil said: “Not only was the quality of the food good but it was also freshly prepared every day. I still have not found anywhere ashore that does as good a vegetable dhal as chef did! It was nice also to have email facilities on-board so that I could keep in contact with those at home. It really does make a difference, and I know many of the crew felt the same.”

Thank you to Gurleen Dhir, Fleet Personnel Manager at Wallem India, for making all of the travel and boarding arrangements, to NYK for supporting the research project, and the crew of the Opal Leader for your warm welcome on board.

24-hour rule brings opportunityThe Japanese authorities implemented a 24-hour manifest rule (similar to the USA), whereby all import cargo shipped in containers to Japan must be declared by Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to Japan Customs 24 hours before loading.

Wallem’s largest customers in Japan had not been able to create the necessary EDI links, but Wallem’s IT Manager in Japan, Toru Shidara, who anticipated

Officers come together

the problem, was working with the Wallem Innovative Solutions team to establish a bespoke Wallem interface to channel the EDI manifest data to and from Japan’s Customs.

Without Shidara-san, the cooperation of the Wallem Japan office and WIS’ IT capability, several of our clients would be facing problems, possibly leading to fines, censures and a loss of their clients’ trust.

Wallem Japan has been providing local EDI and IT services for clients for many years, and it is something which differentiates Wallem as very few agency competitors in Japan can do this.

Wallem hosted its Fleet Officers’ Meeting in Bangalore, India, in March, bringing together seafarers from across the fleet, along with safety and technical shore-based staff. The event agenda included discussions on safety issues and improving lost time injury rates, PSC and tanker quality assurance issues, and crewing topics such as MLC 2006 adherence.

The attendees particularly appreciated the commercial insight provided by the clients who gave presentations – thank you for your time. The Women of Wallem members also took the opportunity to present to the officers on the range of charitable activities the group undertakes on behalf of Wallem.

A gala evening event with family topped off the meeting and included presentations of long service awards.

Support for Sailors’ Society across WallemTyphoon haiyan recoveryJan Webber, Sailors’ Society Director of Fundraising, accepted a donation from Wallem staff of HKD 70,000 to assist with their project in Palo, Philippines, rebuilding homes for people affected by Typhoon Haiyan last year. Jan was a special guest at Wallem Week 2014, where she was presented with the cheque by Wallem seafarers and senior staff.

The team in Clark, Philippines, also gathered donations and on April 25th, Wallem Clark held its monthly General Staff Assembly, where Revd Jasper D Del Rosario of the Sailors’ Society, gave a presentation on the work of the Society and the relief work that has been ongoing in the typhoon affected areas. The office General Manager, Moray Fleming, was pleased to present him with a donation check and best wishes from the team.

Seafarers at Society dinnerWallem’s seafarers were the belles of the ball at the Sailors’ Society fund raising dinner in Hong Kong on 27 February, where they were the centre of attention in their uniforms. The event raised an incredible HK$1.25 million to support the vital work of the Sailors’ Society and enable them to recruit a much needed chaplain in Cebu.

ChennaiMrs Deepa Kirupakaran and the Chennai WOW members organised a visit to the New Life Vision home for 33 orphaned children, donating school supplies and cleaning products to the home, in addition to a month’s food for the residents. Mrs Bhavani Shailaja, wife of 2/E Vasan Ramalingam, sponsored a lunch for the residents and the WOW members to share. Mrs Kirupakaran said “It was a joyous experience sharing the smiles and some time with these young ones. A big thanks to all the families who volunteered and gathered for a noble cause.”

WOW in Chennai raised 100,000 Rupees (USD 1,689) for charity with an auction of paintings by Third Officer Pradeep at the recent Bangalore fleet officers’ meeting. The members also shared the Diwali festival with the children of Safe India, a 25 resident orphanage in Villivakkam, Chennai. With contributions from Wallem India, WOW donated a month’s provisions to the orphanage, new clothes for the children, crackers to celebrate Diwali with, and a lunch during the visit.

Women of WallemThe Women of Wallem (WOW) chapters provide our seafarers’ families with a support network for when the seafarers are away from home on board a vessel. The WOW members also take great pride in their philanthropic and charitable activities in their local communities. Thank you to all the members for giving your time to our communities. Here are some of the recent highlights from the WOW world.

KolkataWoW Kolkata visited Swami Vivekanand’s Mission for Women and Children, donating two physiotherapy machines, along with stationery and snack boxes for more than 200 underprivileged children.

PhilippinesWOW in the Philippines have been busy with donations to Pitpitac Elementary School in the province of La Union, giving the school children new chairs and their own box each to store their school supplies in, just in time for the school term to begin in June. In April the WOW members visited a barangay (village) in Taytay Rizal, a municipality in the province of Rizal, supporting the local medical mission giving influenza vaccinations to 100 local children.

On a more personal level, WOW has provided financial support to many Filipino seafarers and their family members in need. Messman Marvin Villar’s mother, father and brother died in a fire. WOW members extended their sympathies to Marvin and provided financial assistance. The WOW members also extended their support, emotionally and financially, to the family of Messman Christian Navarette who died during shore leave. Captains Armamento and Derige also received financial support for medical expenses whilst on leave. Chief Cook Tia Ednon received financial assistance to help him rebuild after the earthquake in Bohol.

rebuilding after typhoonThe landfall of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on 9 November 2013 in south eastern Philippines left a trail of destruction and suffering that the world had never seen before. Wallem’s Fleet Personnel team’s response was quickly in full swing contacting seafarers on board and at home, their families and manning agencies, offering assistance and support.

A cash donation was available to any seafarers in need of funds to make their homes safe and habitable again. Most of Wallem’s seafarers were lucky to not need it, but for those who did it was good to receive photos of the results knowing it brought quick and effective relief where it was needed. Here we share some of the photos from seafarers who used the immediate funds to repair their homes.

OS Jayford Quilla’s home in the process of rebuilding

Fitter Bernard Ilustre’s home receives a final lick of paint

first-hand accountWallem’s Cebu representative shared his experience visiting the home of OS Quilla after the typhoon.

It was like a personal quest to me to find if Mrs Quilla was still alive because access to the place where she was staying was no longer allowed by military authorities as almost all of the village was wiped out. I can smell dead carcasses all over the place. We proceeded slowly through broken trees, power lines and unfamiliarity of the terrain in darkness. We were relieved to learn when we arrived in their broken house that she was alive. She barely escaped death by climbing to the 3rd floor [of her home]. Now she [Mrs Quilla] is pregnant with their first baby. Through the help of Wallem, the family have been able to slowly rebuild their lives.

True NorTh The Way ForWard

How does True North – Wallem’s values and behaviours – transfer to life at sea? Fourth Engineer Victor Ganguly, currently sailing on MT Caspian Galaxy, tells us how he sees them on board every day.

Pre joining mandatory courses entrusted by Wallem on me, made me come across this buzz word True North. I just took it as [more] rhetoric used by any other company. But soon I was proved wrong. After joining the vessel and spending some valuable time on board, I understood what Wallem actually meant about True North.

For me it’s not only about safety or environment awareness or cost effectiveness, but [there’s] more to it. Wallem as an organisation … where your views are heard and shared, where you come across different nationalities, their different cultures, respecting and adhering to the best of what we can get from each other.

Wallem has been raising standards in every aspect about the life of [a] seafarer, quality food, improved and enhanced health and entertainment including Internet facilities, one of the best living conditions prevailing on board. This not only shows how Wallem thinks about its seafarer, but also enhances the safety culture among the crew on board indirectly.

After being with couple of companies myself, I can feel Wallem is so far been the standard in all fields, what a seafarer wants. It has some of the best fleet, the Frejas, the Sonangols, the Vikens, the Westwoods and many others. There are countless and endless reasons for me being associated with Wallem….there is always more [than] money and that is life and happiness. Which ultimately what matters and which I found here in Wallem. For sure it’s a True North for me.
