GAS-FLOW CONTROL

DEDICATED AUTOMATIC

CONTROLLER

FEATURES

The V-notch orifice consists of a precise-

ly grooved plug sliding in a fitted ring.

Any position of the plug in the ring

results in a specific orifice size and corre-

sponding feed rate. This results in accu-

rate gas-flow control and excellent

repeatability. Control ranges from man-

ual to sophisticated automatic arrange-

ments. The V-notch resists sticking and

corrosion: it’s made of chemical-resistant,

self-lubricating plastic.

3

FRONT ACCESS The chlorinator’s front panel lifts up and

out for easy access to components that

are most frequently serviced, such as the

V-notch orifice and rotameter.

The Wallace & Tiernan Products V-notch

Controller is designed specifically for

chlorination/disinfection systems and is

available in two arrangements. One is

for flow-proportional-control systems;

the other is for systems based on residual

control for combined residual-flow

proportional control. The controller

may be mounted in the chlorinator front

panel or remote. W&T Controllers

feature a user-friendly approach to all

operator functions, and fast, easy

calibration.

V-2000 Chlorinators and their instru-

mentation are in space-saving modules.

In an inter-connected system, they form

a functional, panel-like array, often saving

the cost of a custom panel. Systems are

custom-selected from standard modules,

not custom built, and are shipped as sys-

tems. Removable side panels permit pip-

ing and wiring to be run from module to

module internally. There is no external

interconnecting piping or wiring. Coded

terminal strips and accessible

piping connections make installation

easy. Systems can be pre-tested under

simulated operating conditions to save

time and money at start-up.

SIMPLIFIED INTERCONNECTION

Page 4: Wallace & Tiernan Products: V-2000 Gas Feed Systems

OPERATION

Vacuum regulating valves are made of

rugged plastics and metals to withstand

full supply pressure. Manually operated

valves contain a gas shutoff position to

enable container changes without admit-

ting air, dirt or moisture to the control

module and without shutting off the

injector. These valves are factory set to

reduce gas pressure to optimum operat-

ing vacuum and can be serviced without

disturbing adjustments. Filters protect

control components from impurities in

the gas.

The 500 ppd vacuum regulator has a

unique built-in secondary check valve,

designed to confine gas under pressure

should dirt build up on the primary

valve seat. The pressure relief vent is

built into the regulator housing or can be

mounted remote. The 3,000 ppd and

10,000 ppd vacuum regulators utilize a

unique pressure check/pressure relief

valve designed to minimize the possibili-

ty of gas being released to the atmos-

phere. This is a double check system uti-

lizing two valves that will not open to

allow gas flow unless a vacuum is pre-

sent. In order for gas to be vented, both

valves would have to fail, which is

extremely unlikely.

For reliability with evaporators, the vacu-

um-regulating valve used with the

10,000 pound-per day module has an

electric operator. It’s designed to give

positive shut-off of the chlorine supply

should evaporator temperature or water

level fall below the operating limit or

should power fail. The vacuum-regulating

valve also has a low-temperature switch

designed to close the electric operator

and activate an alarm in the event of an

evaporator malfunction. The electric

operator and the low-temperature switch

are also available with a 3,000 pound-

per-day vacuum-regulating valve.

VACUUM-REGULATING VALVES

NON-ISOLATING

AUTOMATIC SWITCHOVER

4

To insure a continuous supply of gas being

fed, automatic switchover from an empty

container is achieved by a pair of option-

al vacuum-regulating valves. The valve

on standby is held closed by a detent-type

lockout. When the on-line supply is

exhausted, system vacuum rises to a higher-

than-normal level. This increased vacuum

overcomes the latching force of the detent

and the standby supply comes on line—

along with the original supply. Feeding

from both containers virtually assures

complete emptying of the containers.

(Automatic-switchover valves are available

only with capacities to 3,000-lb. of chlorine

per 24 hours and are not for use with

evaporators. A liquid-chlorine switchover

system is available for evaporators.)

INJECTORS

OPERATION

5

The injectors used with V-2000 chlori-

nators are designed to create a powerful

operating vacuum, to save water and

booster-pump horsepower.

3/4 and 1 inch injectors are fixed throat,

differential-type constructed from PVC.

They have a built-in double spring

diaphragm and poppet check valves to

protect against backflooding. Their design

is such that, should operating vacuum

stop, a spring closes the diaphragm valve.

The differential type 2 inch injector can

be PVC with an adjustable throat or a

bronze body injector is available for

higher pressures with a Bellofram (water-

pressure) operated adjustable throat for

start-stop operation. The 3 and 4 inch

differential injectors are plastic and rubber-

lined cast iron with adjustable throats.

Adjustable throat injectors permit opera-

tion to be fine tuned based on site

hydraulic conditions. As these conditions

change, for instance due to booster

pump impeller wear, the injector can be

adjusted to maintain proper performance.

3/4 and 1 inch injectors can be built into

the 500 ppd modules or mounted

remote. All others are remote. Injector

materials resist corrosion and erosion.

In all V-2000 Chlorinators, the system

operates under a vacuum produced at

the aspirator-type injector. Vacuum is

transmitted to the control module and

then to the vacuum-regulating valve

by plastic pipe or tubing.

Gas enters the vacuum-regulating

valve. Here a diaphragm senses vacu-

um on one side and atmospheric pres-

sure on the other. Force on the

diaphragm displaces a spring-loaded

stem off of its seat. This tends to main-

tain the proper operating vacuum ahead

of the control module and permits gas to

flow toward the control

module.

Still under vacuum, gas enters the control

module. Its flow rate is measured as it

passes through the rotameter and con-

trolled at the V-notch by changing orifice

area. At this point, gas flow is controlled

by a differential-regulating valve. This

valve maintains a constant differential

across the V-notch.

In the 10,000-lb. chlorinator, a combina-

tion vacuum-trimmer and drain-relief

valve is included, it relieves to drain any

water which might force its way past the

ball check in the injector. Also, by trim-

ming the powerful injector vacuum, this

valve acts as an accessory to the differen-

tial-regulating valve.

Gas next passes to the injector. At the

injector, metered gas is dissolved in the

water stream. The resultant solution is

discharged to the point of application.

START-STOP OR

PROGRAM CONTROL

MANUAL CONTROL

SCU

SIGNAL CONDITIONING UNIT

PCU

PROCESS CONTROL UNIT

The PCU is a full feature setpoint con-

troller. It provides automatic process

control in response to two process inputs,

typically flow rate and chlorine residual.

The PCU can operate in any of four dif-

ferent control modes including residual

feedback, compound loop, dual signal

feed forward (for dechlorination) and

flow proportional. In addition, the PCU

can be configured for "center-zero" oper-

ation in compound loop mode when a

DEOX/2000® Dechlorination Analyzer is

used. Housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure,

the PCU features a large alphanumeric

display, an LED bargraph to indicate

flow input or actuator position in 5%

increments, a 6-button keypad and menu

driven operator prompts for simple oper-

ation, setup and calibration. For more

information request publication

TI 40.200UA.

This type of control is achieved with sim-

ple implementation. A V-2000

Chlorinator’s operating vacuum is started

and stopped by interrupting the injector

water supply. A solenoid valve or motor-

ized valve is wired into the control circuit

of a pump, switch, controller, or timer.

Similar to this, a special solenoid valve

can be used in the gas line to the injector.

This solenoid is available with the 500-lb.

capacity model only.

The economical SCU gives automatic

process control in response to one process

variable, typically flow rate. Housed in a

NEMA 4X enclosure, the SCU features

an 8-character alphanumeric LCD display

with 6-button keypad and menu-driven

operator prompts for simple operation,

setup and calibration. Input flow scaling

and output dosage adjustments allow

independent scaling from 10 to 400%.

See publication TI 40.100UA for more

details.

Feed rate of any V-2000 Chlorinator is

controlled by either one or both of these

methods: interrupting the injector-water

supply to shut off the chlorinator’s oper-

ating vacuum; changing v-notch-orifice

area (by positioning the v-grooved plug in

its ring) while holding vacuum differen-

tial across the orifice constant.

Manual control by changing orifice area

(v-notch-plug position) via an adjustment

knob on the front of the chlorinator.

Chlorine warning

All unattended chlorine containers and

chlorination equipment should be con-

tinuously monitored for leaks. Sensitive

chlorine detectors which will respond

quickly to the pressure of chlorine in the

ambient air should be installed at each

site. See Technical Information

Publication TI 50.130UA.

Carbon dioxide warning

Because of the high pressure under which

carbon dioxide is contained, the vacuum-

regulating valve cannot be direct-cylinder

mounted. A pressure-reducing valve

must be installed between the supply and

the vacuum-regulating valve.
