Mountain Heart is the band that has been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band’s name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in acoustic music circles since the group’s creation in 1999. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans both as a result of their superlative musicianship, and more notably, their incomparably exciting live performances. As one of the most highly awarded ensembles ever assembled, Mountain Heart, or members of the band, have either won or been nominated for Grammy’s, ACM, CMA, and multiple IBMA Awards. They have appeared on the revered stage of the Grand Ole Opry in excess of 125 times and have shared the stage with acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montgomery Gentry, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Brad Paisley to Alison Krauss, Tony Rice, The Avett Brothers, Yonder Mountain Stringband, Levon Helm, John Fogerty and Patty Loveless.

“Virginia natives Carbon Leaf weave their signature indie-rock blend of Celtic, Appalachian, folk, and country into a rousing new brand of music best described as ‘ether-electrified porch music’. The five-man band’s steadfast arrangement of guitar, bass, drums, and mandolin is rounded out with more exotic instruments, like the bouzouki, fiddle, accordion and penny whistle, all tied together by lead singer Barry Privett’s bold, straightforward baritone. Long beloved in their hometown of Richmond and known for high-energy live shows, the group entered onto the national scene in 2002 by winning an American Music Award with the Irish-tinged hit “The Boxer,” a narrative about a fighter who’s at the top of his game but scraping the bottom of love’s barrel. Pioneering dreams, broken hearts, Love’s renewal – all traverse the American landscape as common themes in Carbon Leaf’s music, as is reflected in the dark, bluesy “Another Man’s Woman,” and “Miss Hollywood,” a Southern-twanged ballad about the angst of dating an enormous sign.”

Now age 75, was 14 yrs. old in McComb, Mississippi when he jumped onto a moving freight train, then jumped off in New Orleans where he has remained for more than six decades.

He taught himself blues guitar, endured a life of addiction and violence, survived hurricane Katrina, his wife's heartbreaking death and has emerged strong and peaceful at the peak of his career.

My multimedia article "The Gutbucket King" tells his amazing story, complete with music and interview clips,

archival pictures and documents, and photo portraits by Julie Dermansky. The New New South, an online magazine of Southern writing, has taken down the paywall in honor of Freddie's 75th. Enjoy it for free at https://newnewsouth.atavist.com/thegutbucketking

We first cottoned onto Fread Martin, a.k.a. Little Freddie King, a few years back when he released his GREAT "You Don't Know What I Know" disc for Fat Possum, the great Mississippi label dedicated to overlooked older bluesmen who play gutsy, lo-fi blues. A hard-living character who has been playing the rural electric blues of his native Mississippi in the lowest bowels of NEW ORLEANS' now-devastated Ninth Ward for years, King and his band have a penchant for hard-hitting, minimalist chords and lyrics, delivered by a cracked, heavily lived-in voice. Much of King's material has an old-style blues feel, but he is at his most charming when he strips it down to just guitar and howling vocals as depicted on his 2008 "Messin' Around tha House" and excellent live performance on his 2010 "Gotta to Walk with da King".

MadeWright Records new 2012 release picks up where "Crackhead Joe" (the premier socio-economic-political song of our time) left off presenting 12 new songs by Little Freddie "gut-bucket" King, cd entitled "Chasing tha Blues".

Wwbs blues musician Joke Page How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb ? None. They have a machine that does that now. How many bass players does it take to screw in a light bulb ? None, the keyboard player does it with his left hand. How do you get two guitar players to play in unison? Shoot one. How do you get a guitar player to turn down ? Put sheet music in front of him. Why was the piano invented ? So the musician would have a place to put his beer. What do you call a harmonica player who says he knows what notes he’s playing ? Liar ! Why do singers never say anything bad about musicians ? Because they’re too busy talking about themselves. How many singers does it take to screw in a lightbulb ? 20. one to hold the bulb and nineteen who drink until the room spins around. How do you make a million with a blues band ? Start with 2 million. What’s the inscription on a dead blues singers tombstone say ? “I didn’t wake up this mornin.” How many blues musicians does it take to screw in a light bulb ? None, blues musicians can’t afford light bulbs.
