Our Newest WALLA Board Members

SuzAnn Schott and Denise Nelson were getting ready to cut a beautiful cake after the WALLA Board meeting May 4. It was time to say thank you to our outgoing WALLA President, Randy Nelson and to welcome our newly chosen President Tom Schott. Ann Skadberg and Linda Taulman were welcomed as the new WALLA board members. Their bios are presented below.

From Ann Skadberg: am humbled and honored to be asked to join such a caring, creative and energetic group. Lifelong learning and WALLA are truly the best way to enjoy retirement and working with the volunteers on the Events Committee just amazes me. It has been enjoyable also sharing the many tidbits of information with my grandchildren, that are some times studying the same subjects. It makes for interesting conversations.

I grew up in Ft. Wayne and attended Ball State, where I acquired the love of painting and photography. I chose a buyer training position at Wolf & Dessauer over a teaching degree. Marriage brought me to Lafayette where I raised four children and delved into the world of volunteering and fundraising. Past careers were in real estate, retail, Purdue Ag. Special Events Coordinator and finally found my passion in fundraising and event coordinating as the 15 year director of the March of Dimes.

From Linda Taulman: My husband, Ken, and I have lived in Lafayette for 31 years. We raised four daughters, Andrea, Monica, Valarie, and Lindsay. We have 2 grandchildren, and are expecting another in February, 2012. We also have 2 great granddaughters ages 1 and 1/2, and 7 years old. I retired from the receptionist position at The Greater Lafayette Art Museum after 11 years of service. I majored in Psychology at Ivy Tech as an adult.

My husband and I are active in our church, Crestview United Brethren. I currently am taking training to become a pre-marital counselor. I was the grief counselor for two years. I am a board member at Duncan Hall and help out with our manners educational program for elementary aged school children. I've taught the 15 Super Foods class here at WALLA, and along with Ann Ginda, coordinated and presented The Art of Tea class. My hobbies are card and craft making, reading and traveling.

My days away from WALLA are spent with grandkids activities, Duncan Hall Board, cooking, crafts, gardening, photography and travel. My daughter and I will be adventuring to Austria this fall. My goal is to take the Master Gardener class and work with a gardening program in the area schools, also, helping with the 20th Anniversary Celebration for WALLA.

best when many participants see

needs, make useful suggestions,

and especially lend a hand.

The success of our WALLA

programs depends on office

coordinators, preparers of daily

beverages, servers for luncheons,

audio-visual technicians, and

vigilant board members.

Consider how you can add to our

growing list of able and

enthusiastic volunteers. Consider

adding your name to our “Help

Wanted and Needed” sheet at your

earliest opportunity.

Where is WALLA? On the Move!

On Thursday, July 14, Nancy Hartman, our representative from the West Lafayette Public Library, led WALLA participants on a tour of the Wabash and Erie Canal at Delphi. Speakers from Delphi’s canal project have spoken to our WALLA participants during classes and piqued our interest, but actually being there was quite an experience.

The tour included a canal boat ride, as pictured, a walk along the canal, a tour of the interpretive center, and a catered luncheon at the Canal Center. After lunch we then visited to the Delphi Opera House and Gallery as well as the Carroll county Historical Museum. We want to thank Nancy Hartman for her planning and leadership for the canal trip.

The Programming Committee arranged for two trips for participants this spring and summer.

Twenty WALLA participants enjoyed our "Armchair Travel" on the Road on June 7-8-9. Lyn and Mike Doyle led us to sites in northeastern Indiana. These included the Ghylsain Chocolate Factory Tour, the Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site, the Auburn-Cord-Dusenberg Museum, and Plyley's Candy Factory. The Amish Shops and "Quilt Magic" were really quite beautiful. We had very nice overnight accommodations in Auburn and at Das Dutchman Essenhaus.

All participants seemed to enjoy the excursion. Thanks to Mike and Lyn Doyle for serving as the planners and leaders on this interesting trip.

Summer Film Series

WALLA Summer Film Series Presents:

Whale Rider on Monday, July 18, at 6:54 in WLPL

Although Witi Ihimaera’s novel Whale Rider is required reading for many students in New Zealand, few Western audiences had even heard of this book until it was adapted into a feature film in 2002 by writer and director Niki Caro. Twelve-year-old Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) wants nothing more in life than to please her grandfather Koro, the chief of their Maori tribe, and become his acknowledged successor. But Pai’s conservative grandfather refuses to even entertain the possibility that a girl could take up the mantle once worn by their ancestor Paikea, the legendary whale rider who is said to have traversed the distance from Hawaiki - the spiritual homeland of the Maori people - to New Zealand on the back of a whale. Despite her grandfather’s disapproval, Pai perseveres and ultimately finds a way to fulfill a destiny that extends far beyond her wildest dreams. WALLA’s showing of Whale Rider (2002) will take place at the West Lafayette Public Library on Monday, July 18 at 6:45 p.m. The film showing and discussion are free and open to the public.

Sense & Sensibility on Monday, August1, at 6:45 in WLPL After the death of their father the sisters Dashwood and their mother are forced to leave the family estate and move to a small country cottage where Elinor and Marianne, the two eldest daughters, soon find themselves tested as they weigh sense and sensibility against their hopes for love and happiness. Emma Thompson’s Academy Award-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel Sense & Sensibility sparkles with the charm and wit of Austen’s own prose which is brought to life by Kate Winslet, Gemma Jones, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, and of course Thompson herself. WALLA’s showing of Sense & Sensibility (1995) will take place at the West Lafayette Public Library on Monday, August 1, at 6:45 p.m. and brings our Summer Film Series Great Adaptations “From Page to Screen” to a close. The film showing and discussion are free and open to the public.
