Microspot spike spotlightsElipta 12v adjustable Micro spike spots are intended for use in containers, urns

and small planting pockets using an MR11 low energy warm white LED lamp.

Microspot Spikes are fitted with a matching 18cm slim rod spike fitted to the

adjustable knuckle joint; this may be unscrewed and extended with an optional

25cm spike extension without having to rewire the light. The longer spike lends

itself for use amongst taller planting or to cater for seasonal fluctuations in

planting height.

are available in a bronze finished brass

body and an aluminium, powder-coated

version in black. Each has a finned spike

and a deep glare shield to hide the light

source from view. MR16 clip-on

honeycomb glare louvre, frosted lens

or colour filters can be fitted internally

on the front of the lamp.

The cable enters through the spike-

mount – a useful feature in reducing

animal damage where urban foxes, or

squirrels can be a nuisance. Typical

applications include uplighting small

trees and shrub border lighting.

Trees vary enormously in size and shape, but most trees can be lit very well using fittings with 36˚ or 60˚ beam angles.

Narrow trees such as Silver Birch, Scots Pine and most conifers work best with a 36˚ light source. Medium spreading trees like Robinia, Cherry or Lime need lights with a 60˚ beam angle. While wide spreading mature Oaks and Cedars will usually require more than one light to achieve reasonable coverage. Extremely narrow subjects such as Italian Cypress could be lit using a very narrow light source, but in practice a 36˚ light will usually be effective.

If a tree has an open canopy the light can be placed close to the trunk and pointed upwards to good dramatic effect. But where the foliage is dense it is better to light it up from the edge of the canopy. Grazing the outside in this way emphasizes textures and avoids the lower branches blocking the light from reaching the top. Wide choice of lamps and accessories, purchase separately.

TREE LIGHTINGTREE LIGHTING

Good quality recessed fittings are available but surface mount fittings are easier to install and are more versatile.

Larger trees require something much more energy efficient such as metal halide or LED. Trees up to about 8 metres can be lit effectively using 35w metal halide lamps in spike mount or recessed fittings or some of the larger LED lights like the Titan 26 or the Athena recessed LED uplight.

For even larger trees we recommend 70w and 150w metal halide fittings.

Recessed metal halide Surface mount metal halide

Persius and OlympusThese recessed adjustable uplights combine a cool top lens,

long lamp life and energy efficiency for uplighting large trees

from lawns or paving. Both Persius and Olympus provide a

powerful 36˚ uplighting beam, using a single-ended metal halide

lamp, while maintaining a typical top lens temperature of under

70˚C - so these huge fittings can be used even in walkover

areas to uplight trees over 6m high with an open canopy and

branch structure from directly below. The lamp and reflector

assembly is mounted on an adjustable cradle so the beam

can be tilted up to 20˚ from vertical to achieve the desired

effect. G12 single-ended ceramic type CDMT 3000˚K warm

white metal halide lamps are recommended for green foliage

trees and combines long lamp life and colour stability.

HQIT 4000˚K lamps give a cooler lighting effect suitable for

trees with blue/grey foliage such as some pines & cedars.

Order lamps separately.

ApolloApollo surface mount fittings are available in 3 wattage

ratings and a choice of circular beam angles designed for

uplighting large trees over 6m. Supplied with a stirrup bracket

for mounting on walls, ground spike or adjustable surface

mount. The frame of the borosilicate lens has ‘through-flow’

slots to allow water to drain off the lens even if pointed

directly upward or fitted with a glare shield.
