INTRODUCTION

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Now the world, the temperature rising day by day. In Malaysia in particular, our

country is in the hot and humid climate throughout the year. Temperature outside the

house / building in the temperature influence. A variety of methods or

devices, introduced to reduce heating in homes and buildings between the fan and air

conditioning. However, the cost is high. With this, we feel compelled to solve the

problem. Where the unit of waste present in our own country, namely the oil

palm waste. Insulated wall construction can be used for long term and does not

require much care. The same compound wall but in upgrades  by adding palm

oil waste to reduce the emission of heat in the house / building then the temperature will

be low / cold. This is one of our new innovations to be introduced to replace the

existing and costs.

Among the aspects identified in the project selection factor is the existing brick was

too heavy (± 3 kg), high manufacturing costs and power brick and a lot of uncertainties

that do not reach the standards set by the strength of the JKR and SIRIM. Although the

heat insulating wall can be easily compared with clay brick wall thermal

insulation locked but do not have the characteristics of good engineering does not

have high strength, if not accompanied by bar. Therefore, we hope

to create a wall thermal insulation as a result of oil palm waste mixture in the

mixing additives to overcome the problems stated above.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the project are listed below:

a) Comparing the thermal insulation walls using palm oil fiber and common walls

b) To use discarded materials to make new

innovations in construction materials and save cost to install of the existing

alternative for thermal insulation

c) To test the effectiveness of using palm oil fiber can insulate the heat

d) Create a model to demonstrate the effectiveness of palm fiber is used

as heat insulation materials and compare with normal wall.

SCOPE OF RESEARCH

This study applied the oil palm fiber in wall construction as thermal

insulation. This experiment using concrete materials such as cement, coarse and

fine aggregates, sand and water. Percentage  used is10%, 20% and 30% palm oil

fiber added in the existing mix. Then, palm fiber is fixed in a concrete mix that will be

used to build the sample. Concrete ratio of 1:2:4 concrete used. Original mixing

ratio compared to the modified by adding waste palm oil into the mixture. Wall

insulation will be refined to model as the size 1 feet x 1 feet. This wall will be

tested with the corresponding temperature stress. The effectiveness of the

wall sample would be known by measuring the temperature of the sample wall. The

sample is shaped like a room, so much easier to carry out emission measurements in

room temperature and the effectiveness when applied in the construction of the wall.

This mixture ratio will be tested its strength before use. Among the tests to be carried

out is :

i. The collapse test

ii. Test cube

iii. Compressive Strength Testing

LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

Have you ever thought of waste materials such as oil palm waste can used again until it

becomes the key in building products homes and buildings? we realize that the advantage

that the waste until it has become the material sought by the operator to making products

that would benefit not a little to the people. Perhaps the fact that it impossible to be

realized, But the reality of oil palm waste involving the trunk and bunch is no need to be

removed can be recycled again for be among the most important materials that

can strengthen the bond or structure of a building material.

Creation was made a Senior Research Officer, Institute for Research Forest of

Malaysia (FRIM), Dr Rahim Sudin, not only has the characteristics of a good fire

resistance, but it has a density lighter, and stronger. According to Dr Rahim, in his

research he uses waste palm oil to be used as a mixture

of fiber cementproduce lightweight cement composite asa new component in building

house. He said the fire resistance test conducted at FRIM and then in SIRIM Berhad

lightweight cement composite show goes beyond the limits within

two hours when burned continuously until the temperature exceeded 1000 degrees

centigrade.

Use of palm fiber is a mixture in the wall insulation haba. Many types of

fibers can be used in the build molds for wall. The research will find method use of

fibers in concrete formwork has been used since 3500 years ago in Baghdad, Iraq. There

all prefer natural fibers that have been existing for more economic and cheap.

Example they use bunch of date. Natural fiber are also categorized

by three types of animal, vegetable and mineral. Material will research

Page 7: Wall Isulation Using Oil Palm Fibre

selected studies are palm fiber. oil palm fiber also reduces the rate of heat flow in an

environment.

Other material that would affect the reduction of insulator heat is '

low heat portland cement’ and  granulated blast furnace slag’. Study also found

that night greatly influence wall thermal insulation. Many other substitutes that can be

used among these are asbestos and aliminium. But of this

material is more expensive than with palm fiber which natural. Material used was a kind

of material is wasted.

The  material non-natural substances are often used as a layer stainless

aliminnium. Have two layers separated by air wave. That can be found in

price in one foot below RM2 persquare. It can also very effectively

used for wall and roof .For additional material, we can use heat-resistant paint. Process

resistant paint such a process can delay the process of heating the house wall. For

the addition, paint the walls with bright colors could reflect the heat.

Advantage obtained from this study can avoid pollution when old trees are cut down and

the most easy it can be used as oil palm fiber cement composites.

Another material there is another innovation of polystyrene insulation material such as

cork in cassavastem, remove the things I blend and glue, press follow the shape and

size, be pieces of insulation.Posted drawback is biodgreble, actually  the function I want

toreplace polystyrene non-biologically because I destroyed, just when we want.

6

Page 8: Wall Isulation Using Oil Palm Fibre

The advantage as by-products after oil palm seeds removed from the bunch to

purpose of oil extraction . The components of the palm tree has some potential in

various fields such as component of the composite-plastic palm trees, components palm

trees, rubber , pulp and paper. with the advantage available in natural fiber, natural fiber-

reinforced composites consisting of thermosets and thermoplastics actively developed.

Disadvantage is Invite the coming of termites. Smelling if a rainy day

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 In the beginning, we decide and research objective. Based on literature review. We

are going to build two model which is control model and study sample. In the

construction of study sample, we will use a mixture of concrete in the ratio 1:2:4

and mixed with palm fiber. The material to be mixed are cement, aggregates, sand,

water and palm oil fiber.

Next, we will testing the two models with hairdryer. Then, we will collect data

analysis and compare regarding the scope of research.

A flow chart is done to arrange and explain all the main activities which will be

carried out through out the title and the objective of the experiment. Figure 3.2

shows the flow chart of research methodology

METHOD

1. In this construction we will use a mixture of Concrete in the

ratio 1: 2: 4 and mixed with palm fiber.

2. The material to be mixed are cement, aggregates, sand, water and fiber (palm

fiber).

3. After mixing the ingredients we have to do the 'Slump Test' and

'cube test'. 'Slump Test' function is to measure the workability of the

standard work for all types of concrete.

4. Building a box set of the measurements to increase the wall.

5. After the box completely assembled, molded concrete will be poured

into the form box according to its design.

6. Make a wall and build a hole to put a hair dryer to heat can be dumped to

the wall.

7. Paint the walls with bright colors for bright colors will reflect heat, so

it will indirectly reduce the heat in the room.

8. Attach the thermometer to the wall for several hours.

9. Finally, the temperature in the room whose walls are insulated by combination

of palm fiber material will be tested and taken three consecutive temperature

readings

3.1 Preparation Of Materials

1) Portland Cement

In this case study we use the Ordinary Portland Cement. This is because

we recognize that the most abundant type of cement in the market and suitable

for normal use. In addition. This cement also easy to find on the market. Cement

is certified and meets the standards set by SIRIM.

2) Water

In the production of concrete, water plays an important role. The used

should not contain any substance that might affect the hydration of cement and

affect the durability of concrete. Water resources are derived from water pipes

provided.

11

Page 13: Wall Isulation Using Oil Palm Fibre

3) Coarse aggregate

The aggregate component of a concrete mix occupies 60 to 80 % of the

volume of concrete and their characteristics influence the properties of the concrete. The

coarse aggregate was air dried to obtain saturated surface dry condition to ensure that

water cement ratio was not affected. Few characteristics of aggregate that affect the

workability and bond between concrete matrix are shape, texture, gradation and moisture

content.

4) Fine aggregate

Fine aggregate is commonly known as sand should comply with coarse,

medium or fine grading requirements. The fine aggregate was air dried to obtain

saturated surface dry condition to ensure the water cement ratio is not affected.

5) Oil Palm Waste Fiber

Oil palm fiber is the general term for the fiber being extracted from oil palm.

Oil palm fiber can be further classify into EFB fiber, shredded EFB fiber , oil palm fruit

mesocarp fiber as well as oil palm trunk fiber, each category has their own property that

serve for difference purpose. The empty fruit bunch EFB and mesocarp will gone

through press, shredded, separated and dried process, and there are no involve or expose

to any chemical.
