andIhaveeachwriEenachoralworktobepremieredduringourGoodFridayTenebraeworshiponApril19.EachofthethreechoralworksincludesapoemwriEenbyafemalepoet.John’spiececentersonthesharedlookbetweenPeterandJesusasPeterdeniesJesus(Luke22:61)—wonderingwhatwasinJesus’thoughtsatthatHme.ChrisHne’spiececentersonJesus’crownofthorns—how,throughhisownsufferingourpainandsufferingismiHgated.MypiecefocusesonourreacHontothePassionstoryitself—howthewomenatthecross,Peterandtheapostles,natureitself,and(finally)wearemovedinbody/mind/soulatthestoryofJesus’sacrificeandcrucifixion.Thechoirisalreadyworkingonthismusic,andwe’reexcitedtoshareitasaporHonofourGoodFridayservice.
OurenHreHolyWeekwillbespecial.OnPalmSunday,ourKidsoftheKingdomandChimesofWorshipwillprovidespecialmusic.OnMaundyThurdsay,withthewashingofthefeetandstrippingofthealtar,we’llhearmusicbytheAdultChoirandCelebraHonRingers.OurGoodFridayserviceincludesthisnewmusicaswellasaninteracHvereadingofthePassionstoryfromJohn’sGospel.EasterVigilonHolySaturdaywillstartoutside(weatherpermi^ng)andculminateinsidewiththe‘light’returningtooursanctuaryasweconclude.AndEastermorningwillincludetheNighHngaleBells,theAdultChoir,andbrasstocelebratetheResurrecHon.—Peace,Doug

Mostyears,themusicministryworkstoprovidesomethingextraspecialduringHolyWeekand/orEaster.ThesemonumentaldaysintheworshiplifeofthechurchdemandspecialaEenHonandmusicalcommentary.Twoyearsago,theAdultChoirofferedtheRequiemofGabrielFaurewithchamberorchestraduringtheGoodFridayservice.Lastyear,wewelcomedabrassquintetfromRutgersUniversitytoprovidespecialmusiconEastermorning.Thisyear,IdecidedtolookagaintoGoodFriday.Ihadhappeneduponafewmovingpiecesofpoetrylastfallthatcenterontheeventof(andleadingupto)Jesus’crucifixion.AndIthoughtthatitwouldbeanicethingtohavesomeofourPoP-connectedcomposerswritenewpiecesonthesetexts.

Before the group walk, Pastor Selover read a version of the Lord’s Prayer from the Prayer Book of the Anglican Church of New Zealand. It integrates the traditional Anglican prayer with Maori texts and is used often in the world-wide Anglican communion.
