Mark Hall, Principal

Welcome Amanda Cooper I would like to welcome Amanda Cooper who joins us at Walcha Central as an Instructional Leader K-12. Amanda’s key role is to work with staff to support an evidence based teaching practice. Her focus is to identify and help implement ‘What works best’ for our students to improve literacy and numeracy. You can read more about Amanda in this edition.

School Plan A key improvement measure in our school plan is student writing. On the back of our research project, staff this term set specific student writing milestones, collected and shared evidence of impact and have used this evidence to inform their teaching practice. Over the year staff are scheduled to meet twice a term to evaluate the evidence of impact on student writing.

BeREAL Rewards Day On Friday more than 150 students enjoyed a fun activities afternoon in celebration of their 4.8 BeREAL score. Special thanks to Karen Barnes and Sonia Ussher and their ‘brains trust’ for devising and coordinating the student challenges.

State Swimming Sixteen Walcha Central students have been selected to participate in the NSW State Swimming Championships which are being held this week at Homebush in Sydney. Our next newsletter will have full details however I wanted to congratulate all students for their hard work and on their selection to this prestigious event. Can I also give a huge vote of thanks to everyone at Walcha Flippers for their dedication and support of young people in Walcha.

Kevin Creighton - Cross Country Awards During our last awards ceremony, we were fortunate to have Mr Kevin Creighton present the runner-up and age champions for the recently held school cross county. With a newly devised track alongside the levy banks, Walcha Central and our feeder primary schools completed this event in the spirit of strong competition.

Aunty Sue’s Project As an extension on the NAIDOC theme Because of her, we can… Walcha Central initiated Aunty Sue’s project. The aim of the project was for students to work with Aunty Sue Green to listen to and then retell part of her story using a variety of mediums including dance, sculpture and drawing. The project is on track with students meeting during lunch and afterschool on Mondays to work on their recreations. A special thanks to Aunty Sue, Karen Bloomfield, Bina Armstrong and Graham Barnes for their work with this project.

Dr David Townsend and Dan Hazler Our School Plan identified a review of the current curriculum model with a focus on improving school pedagogical practice. Earlier this term we had the first of three visits this year with Dr David Townsend from Alberta, Canada. David uses generative dialogue to support a reflective practice with a focus on identifying opportunities to improve student learning and engagement. Also, our school has commenced its partnership with Cut Through Education and Dan Hazler to support our work in collaborative planning around a two phase model over the next 18 months. I look forward to providing further information regarding our progress.

With the end of the term now here, can I thank all parents, students and staff for helping to forge such a successful term of learning.

School resumes for staff on Monday 29 April with all students returning on Tuesday 30 April.

Amanda Cooper – Instructional Leader K-12

I am so pleased to be working at Walcha CS as an Instructional Leader K-12. My background as a teacher is quite diverse. I am trained in Early Childhood, Primary and Special Education and I completed post graduate studies as a Teacher Librarian K-12. I have worked from Preschool through to Year 8 as a classroom teacher, teacher librarian and learning and support teacher and as a maths consultant K-6.

My teacher journey has enabled me to teach in a number of locations including Inverell, Moree, Tamworth, Cootamundra, Tenterfield, Warren, Crookwell, Goulburn, Canada and Kelly’s Plains. In my latest role as a Teacher Quality Advisor in the Armidale Education office, I have worked to build the capacity of teachers, school leaders and principals K-12 to lead quality teaching practice in schools across a huge geographical area encompassing Yarrowitch in the south, Tenterfield in the east, along the border to Mungindi, Moree, Wee Waa and Collarenebri in the north west, and everything in between.

Each experience has developed my passion for teaching and

leadership of quality teaching to ensure the best learning for every student. My key drivers for success focus on student-centred teaching, quality student learning and measured

improvement using evidence, all underpinned by wellbeing.

I look forward to working at Walcha CS with a strong focus on

evidence based practice to improve student learning and I look forward to meeting our school families.

K-12 NEWSLETTER 12 April 2019

Friday 22 March saw the largest group of Walcha Central students competing at the Walcha Show in many years! Thirty three students competed across a number of categories in the show including junior sheep meat and wool judging, junior cattle judging, cattle parading and led steer classes.

Our students had tremendous success on the day with placings in all categories.

In the junior cattle judging, Harry Chenoweth came second and Sophie Worth third in their age divisions. The steer classes saw Walcha Ninja placed 1st and Walcha Nitro 2nd in the Crossbred Steer competition, while Walcha Nincom placed 5th in the Purebred Steer class.

In the paraders competitions, our Walcha students exhibited outstanding skills up against some tough competition. Skylar Kyle-Robinson was awarded first place in the U12 years group, while in the U13 years division, Charlotte Mooney came first, Harry Chenoweth 4th and Stuart Lawrence 5th. In the U14 years Marlee Wall was awarded 4th place and Olivia Haslem 6th. Lillie Chenoweth came second and Tyla Bloomfield 4th in the U15s. In the U16 years division Abbey Mackaway came 2nd, Jessica Wake 3rd, Olivia Bruce 4th and Sophie Worth 5th. Hannah Dunn took out first place in the U17 years age group while Maddison McGovern finished in 5th place. Hannah then returned to the ring to win Champion Parader of the Show.

The students were impeccably behaved throughout the day and were excellent representatives of Walcha Central School and the Walcha community. Samantha Reeves and Dinah Jones

Students in the design and technology class have worked on an assessment task where they had to produce a lamp from recycled materials. They had to come up with a unique design of their choice, produce working drawings of their lamp and then construct it.

They completed a folio of their work explaining how they came up with the idea, the success criteria for their project and developed a finance plan and construction time-line for their work.

The uniqueness of their designs was amazing and the quality of their work outstanding, so much so that I convinced them to enter their work in the show. I am pleased to say they had great results.

All students entered the Under 18 Handicraft section of the show. Thomas Donnelly was awarded Champion in ‘An article not mentioned’, while in the ‘Recycled’ section of the competition, Ashleigh Wall received first place, Thomas Vella second and Elizabeth Pendlebury’s work received Highly Commended.

As the students’ teacher I am proud of their results and the recognition of their hard work in class.

Year 6 into 7, 2020 Transition Program

Each year, Year 5 & 6 students from the Walcha district have been participating in high school Taster Days. These Taster Days allow students to experience the types of lessons they will have when they go to high school and are designed to make their transition to high school as smooth as possible.

This year at Walcha Central School we will commence this program with two Taster Days in Term 2 on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 June 2019. This will give students a more authentic picture of what to expect when they begin high school.

A further Taster Day will also be held during Term 3 on Wednesday 28 August 2019.

Each day will be structured as if it were a regular day at high school. Students will be divided into groups for the day and given a timetable to follow. There will be five separate lessons. They will spend their recess and lunch breaks with other high school students.

The Year 6 into 7 Orientation Day is scheduled for Year 6 students and their parents during Term 4 on Thursday 28 November 2019 – parents will be invited to attend the morning session. To enhance this experience we will hold an additional day for students only on Friday 29 November 2019 where students will engage in workshops and activities to prepare them for high school.

For more information and any queries regarding this program, please contact Simon Warden on 6777 2777.

Book Club

Year 6 Awareness Day

Year 6 students were proud to organise activities to

acknowledge National Day of Action against Bullying as

their nominated Awareness Day for 2019.

On Friday 15 March during RAGE sessions, all students

across WCS discussed the difference between bullying

and conflict and ‘Take a Stand Against Bullying’ wrist

bands were distributed to the students. Throughout the

following week, rage sessions were centred on building

resilience and ways to help yourself and others who feel

like they don’t belong due to actions of others. Year 6

students ran the K-6 sessions, having the opportunity to

demonstrate leadership skills while acting as peer

mentors. Each day, Year 6 organised activities during

break times to support students in treating each other

respectfully.

All parents should be proud of the leadership

demonstrated by Year 6 and the co-operation and maturity

from the rest of the student population in discussing such

an important topic.

The new Book Club has started this term, and with a few weeks already under our belt we are off to a fun start. We have nine members so far, all reading novels that are included in the Premier's Challenge list as we have decided to tackle the challenge for 2019.

We have also made a start to this term's major project. Members are currently learning how to write the hardest books of all - picture books. They are restricted with their stories, only using words that have up to five letters in them, and 16 lines all together with one sentence per line.

These restrictions have certainly given members something to think about, but we have one first draft story complete, which is great.

To prepare for the project, members have worked on a planning booklet which guides the story. Creating characters, deciding on settings, and thinking about plots have been the focus towards first drafts.

As part of the project, members are designing their picture books. Next week, we hope to start work on their mock books, and start illustrations. I think we might be looking for some great artists to help with this part.

Our target audience is K, 1 and 2, and we are hoping to share some of our completed picture books with those classes later in the term.

Making bookmarks, drawing characters, writing book reviews, and keeping a club journal are some of the fun activities we cover. Discussion has been fantastic among members, and we are having a colourful, interesting, and most of all, fun time.

Book Club is on every Thursday at lunch time in the back meeting room in the library.

Scrapbooking Flex Subject Wins Show Prizes

Throughout Term 1, students in Years 3 - 6 have had the opportunity to choose a flex subject that occurs once a week. One of these subject options was scrapbooking and card making. Twenty one girls have been creating and exploring the skills of scrapbooking and card making. Some of their outstanding creations were submitted to the Walcha Show with results as follows:

Anna Benson: Ivy Partridge encouragement award

Layla Smith: Second place

Dakota Andrews: Second place

Georgia West: Highly Commended

Five Tips for positive parenting

in the School Holidays

School holidays are fast approaching. Here are five tips to help you feel more confident and less stressed while the kids are at home.

1. Create a safe, interesting environment Bored teenagers are more likely to find trouble and bored kids are more likely to misbehave.

2. Have a positive learning environment. Give your kids positive attention, even if only for a minute or so.

3. Use Assertive Discipline Set clear rules and boundaries, and follow through with fair consequences.

4. Have Realistic Expectations Nobody’s perfect – kids, teenagers and parents all make mistakes sometimes.

5. Take care of yourself as a parent It’s all about balance – you’ve got to look after your own needs too.
