College of Creative Studies

David Whitney Building

This project for the College of Creative Studies (CCS) involved the complete renovation of a 760,000 SF, 11-story building for occupancy by the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education. This nationally registered historic building, previously known as the Argonaut Building, was originally built in two parts in 1928 and 1936 as the General Motors engineering and design center.

The historic David Whitney Building in downtown Detroit opened to the public as a retail and professional services building in 1915. Walbridge is serving as construction manager and is re-purposing the 19-story high-rise to bring retail space and a boutique hotel to the first nine floors, apartments to the top nine floors, and historic preservation to various portions of the building.

Originally a church, Walbridge provided a much needed face-lift to the Hillberry Theater that included a vertical wheel chair lift, bathroom expansion, several added meeting rooms, lobby and box office updates such as installing state-of-the-art materials and communications and the exterior skin tuck-pointed and cleaned. The fast tracked renovation was completed in just six months.

We consider ourselves partners in our clients’ success. Whether it’s making room in the

budget for added value or making up for the unexpected, our engineers, estimators and

field leaders are skilled in identifying possibilities and solutions. One way we achieve this

is by offering clients the in-house service of value analysis/value engineering (VA/VE).

Through VA/VE, we identified $295 million in possible savings for clients in 2013. That’s 176

percent more than our annual benchmark.

Walbridge provided construction management services for a new academic building, a new sky-light enclosed commons area between Hutchins Hall and the William W. Cook Legal Research Library, and renovations/upgrades within both Hutchins Hall and the Cook Legal Research Library. Historical renovations for Hutchins Hall and Cook Library included the re-facing of the 1950’s metal panel facade on the south, east and west sides of the Legal Research stacks wing, as well as the relocation and redesign of the existing pedestrian bridge connecting Hutchins Hall and Legal Research. Both of these buildings also received life-safety upgrades including the addition of an electrical substation and chilled water plant.

Walbridge teamed with Jenkins Construction for the expansion and renovation of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). The DIA Master Plan consisted of renovations to the interior and exterior of both the historic Cret building and North and South Wings. The project encompassed a new art gallery and major improvements to the existing building’s electrical, mechanical, fire protection and ventilation systems that protect the museum’s artifacts. The Master Plan also addressed improvement to visitor circulation paths in an effort to become more accessible and visitor friendly.
