AUTUMN FOODSThe abundance of fruits from the autumn harvest gives plentyof scope for delicious recipes from vibrant squashes to sweetfigs but the classic fruit crumble really takes some beating!

In season during September and October:artichoke, aubergines, beetroot, blueberries, broad beans,broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, celery, chestnuts,clementines, courgettes, cranberries, cucumber, duck,elderberries, elderflowers, fennel, figs, French beans, garlic,grapes, kale, leeks, mackerel, mangetout, marrrow, melons,nectarines, onions, parsnips, peaches, pears, peas, peppers,potatoes (main crop), radishes, rabbit, raspberries,r ocket,runner beans, salmon, sardines, scallops, squid, tomatoes,walnuts, watercress, wild mushrooms

FIGSThe fig is considered to be one of the most sensual of fruitswith its tempting, luscious flesh that is at its best when it hasbeen left to ripen in the sunshine. The ancient Greeksrecognised the health benefits of figs and included them in thediet of the athletes for the first Olympic Games. Some preferto peel the fig before eating, but in fact the whole fruit isedible. Figs should be eaten at room temperature, as chillingsuppresses the flavour. If you get a glut, fig jam is delicious orthey can be poached in syrup and served with a little crèmefraîche or mascarpone. Try fresh figs quartered, served withthick Greek yoghurt and drizzled with honey - delicious!

BLACKBERRIESBlackberries can be gathered as soon as they ripen from redberries into dark, plump ones. They can be eaten fresh (theyonly keep for a short time) or preserved into excellent jelly orjam - although the latter can be a bit 'pippy'. They are alsodelicious in pies, crumbles, ice cream, fools and summerpuddings and are a natural partner to the first cooking apples.Blackberry and apple jam or crumble are popular recipes.Blackberries also make an excellent match for rich or gameymeat such as venison, lamb or pheasant.

APPLESWorcester Pearmains, Bramleys, Discoveries, Early Windsorsand Cox’s Orange Pippins should all be making anappearance this month. Some of these are available insupermarkets, but searching out local growers and visitingorchards will give you an even wider choice. It will also meanthat the apples you buy will be as fresh as they can be. UseBramleys in pies and crumbles, or bake them whole withsome brown sugar, butter and spices. Slices of caramelisedapple also work wonders with meat, especially pork.

Pumpkin Pie

Use a ready made sweet crust pastry case.

For the filling:450 g/1lb prepared weight pumpkin flesh,cut into 1in/2.5 cm chunks2 large eggs plus 1 yolk 3 oz/75g soft dark brown sugar1 tsp ground cinnamon½ level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg½ tsp ground allspice½ tsp ground cloves½ tsp ground ginger10 fl oz/275 ml double cream

Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Use a shop bought sweet crust pastry case,about 9 inch/23 cm diameter and 1½inches/4 cm deep.

To make the filling, steam the pumpkin thenplace in a coarse sieve and press lightly toextract any excess water.

Lightly whisk the eggs and extra yolktogether in a large bowl.

Place the sugar, spices and the cream in apan, bring to simmering point, whisking.Pour over the eggs and whisk again briefly.

Add the pumpkin pureé, still whisking tocombine thoroughly.

Pour the filling intothe pastry case and bakefor 35-40 minutes, by which time it will puffup round the edges but still feel slightlywobbly in the centre.

Remove from oven and place the tin on awire cooling rack.

Serve chilled(stored looselycovered in foil inthe fridge) withsome equallychilled crémefraïche, cream orice cream

It was a bit of a spur of the moment decision to

have a meal at The Sun in Lofthouse. My

daughter and I were already in Outwood and

time was marching on and tummies were

rumbling, so we had a look around for

somewhere to eat.

As an impromptu meal out, I didn’t want to spend too

much and mindful that my daughter was ravenous and

would happily eat starter, main and pudding, I decided

to give the Sun a try at Lofthouse, taking advantage of

the Two for One deals they run. For every two adult

main meals ordered you pay only for the more

expensive of the two, the cheaper meal is free.

The car park is a good size, so parking wasn’t a

problem at all and the interior of the pub had a lovely

old-world charm, with the modern style of mix and

match tables and chairs giving it a very welcoming feel.

Food is ordered at the bar from the extensive menu -

there really is something for everyone from traditional

sausages, gammon and chicken dishes to pasta,

moussaka, curries and Thai dishes.

I expected the food to be typical pub-grub,

microwaved portions and badly cooked vegetables, but

it was delicious and cooked to perfection.

We started with a portion of potato wedges to share

topped with melted cheese and served with a sour cream

dip (£3.75). The wedges were delicious and I could

quite happily have moved the whole portion off myself

as a main meal. Had I ordered it just for myself I would

have opted for a topping of chilli or bacon and sweet

chilli sauce. Or if we had just decided to have a starter

between us we would have gone for the Classic Combo

at £7.45. We watched this being served to another table

and it looked mouthwateringly good with onion rings,

BBQ wings, breaded mushrooms, garlic bread, potato

wedges and tortilla chips with a couple of dips.

For our meals, my daughter decided on the Thai style

salmon fillet in a Thai basil and coconut sauce served

with new potatoes and carrots (£8.75). I went for the

Southern Fried Chicken Fillet Burger topped with

smokey hot salsa and served with chips (£8.75), my

reasoning being that if my daughter didn’t like her

salmon we could swap!

We didn’t seem to be waiting too long inbetween

courses, the service was excellent and the food tasty and

very well cooked. The Thai sauce was just a little on

the spicy side for my daughter but she still enjoyed it.

For pudding we ordered one portion of the ice cream

brownie cake, which had everything chocolately thrown

in - brownie, chocolate mousse, cream, ice cream,

crunchy biscuits and pieces of chocolate drizzles with a

chocolate sauce and served with cream. Not badly

priced at all at £3.75 and my daughter was in heaven - I

think I managed one spoonful as a taster! The less

chocolately options included apple pie, cherry bakewell

cheesecake and profiteroles and most desserts were

around the £3.50 - £3.75 mark.

With a couple of soft drinks and a coffee for me in

lieu of a dessert, our bill came to just short of £20 and

we both left feeling very full and very satisfied.

Good value, tasty food and excellent service. We

would definitely return for more. The Fuzzy Ed’s Fun

House play centre was in full flow as was the outdoor

play area for larger children - a great option for families

with children.

A Hot Toddy This one might havecome from Grandparather than Grandma,but whoever advisedyou to slip a couple ofdrops of whiskey intoyour hot honey andlemon drink was

talking sense. Small amounts of alcohol(we're talking whiskey or brandy here notSmirnoff Ice or cider) can have an anti-inflammatory effect on mucous membranesand can help reduce a fever. A dash ofalcohol in a hot drink before bed can also aidrestful sleep.

Inset days in our household are traditionally Theme Park Days- when the queues are likely to be shorter and the parks muchquieter, so the September inset day this year was spent atFlamingo Land.

We’ve been before and knew the layout of the park, so weknew we would be making for the ‘big’ rides, followed by a spot oflunch, more ‘high adrenaline thrills’ and home.

With it getting towards the close of the season, I expected thepark to be quite run down and grubby and many of the rides to bein need of repair and repainting, but we were pleasantlysurprised.

First of all schools in the North East must also have had aninset day on the same day as Ossett School, since the park wasfull of Black and White football strips and geordie accents, butthe queues were bearable, usually about 10mins maximum andthe park never felt too full.

What really surprised me was how well kept the park was. Itwas spotless and didn’t look in the slightess bit jaded or in needof some TLC. The litter pickers were constantly doing their roundsto keep the park clear of rubbish and the buildings and facilitiesall looked very well maintained, so full marks to Flamingo Land.

The park is divided into three main areas - the bigger rides, thezoo and animal enclosures, and the family rides aimed at smallerchildren. All areas and rides are quite close to each other and itis very easy to walk around the park. There is also a small train

and a monorail running regularly which you can hop on and offat different points in the park if you’re not into walking.

The selection of rides is great and there really is something foreveryone - even a wuss like me! In the ‘big rides’ section thereare traditional and modern rollercoasters that have you sat intraditional cars, suspended beneath the rail with legs dangling,sat on motorbikes that launch you forward at ridiculous speeds.There is a new rollercoaster that has a vertical drop and the logflume that leaves you soaking wet regardless of where you sit inthe cart. There are rides that spin you fast, spin you upside downand shoot you 200ft skywards. There are gentle rides, rideswhich leave you feeling exhilarated and rides that just leave youfeeling sick.

For adrenaline junkies, Flamingo Land has plenty to keep yougoing all day, for the more timid and younger visitors there aregentler rides and other attractions to keep you occupied.

The Muddy Duck territory is specifically for young children andhas a range of rides, shetland ponies and reptile house, with lotsof space for the little ones to run around. It’s a lovely part of thepark - my favouite - and the food outlets, toilets and facilities areall that little bit nicer and cleaner. But not all kiddie rides are inthe Muddy Duck area, many tot rides were set in between the bigrides making a family visit with children of different ages, quiteeasy to plan.

The park also puts on family shows such as the Sea Lionshow, Bird Show and the African Acrobat Show and the Zoo is avery popular attraction

There is plenty of green space to lie in the sunshine and chillor have a picnic if you wanted. If you go with older children, youcan let them wander off whilst you have some time relaxing. Iwould have liked to have had more time to walk around the parkmore - maybe next time!

It was a lovely day out with our thrill seeking 11 and 15year olds and a good day was had by all. Easy to get to(just over an hour from Ossett), good value for moneyand something for all age groups andall levels of fear!

SAYNOTO0870.COM Non-Geographical Alternative Telephone NumbersThis award winning website has been in existence

for a few years now and it was with some surprise

that I recently discovered how many people didn’t

know about it.

Most telephone service providers now offer

packages that give unlimited, or reduced rate calls

to geographic telephone numbers (starting 01.,

02.., 03..) - their money is made on calls to

mobiles and premium and local rate numbers.

Which is great if you don’t need to call these

numbers, but have you tried to report a fault, get in

touch with a helpline or ring a large company

without using an 08... number?

Or if you are a mobile phone user with a

package that gives you ‘x’ number of inclusive

minutes which excludes calls to 08.... numbers, do

you get frustrated when the person you need to

speak to has only provided an 0800 or 0845

number.

Not only do the 08.. numbers disguise where

you are calling, they are confusing for the general

public in terms of working out how much we are

paying to call them. Freephone numbers are

actually very expensive to call from a mobile!

The SAYNOTO0870.COM website is brilliant

because it lists many well known companies, and

their equivalent geographical numbers. Alternative

geographic numbers are listed for 0500, 0800,

0808, 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers.

Smply log onto the website, click on the ‘search

for alternative number’ icon and enter either a

company name or a telephone number - all

alternative numbers listed will be given.

The site relies on people verifying and updating

the information listed and is in no way

comprehensive. It does however provide a means

of searching to see if a high charging number has

a cheaper alternative.

Although hedgehogs are often happy to hibernate in apile of old leaves and twigs, some wildlife enthusiastshave reported success with a constructed wooden boxplus an entrance tunnel, buried under old leaves. Awooden box with a small entrance hole (10-12sq cm or4-5sq in) makes the nest, and a covered tunnel leading

to the entrance helps toprevent foxes and otherpredators from raiding it. A tunnel can easily be madefrom old bricks with a wooden plank laid over them. Youcan then watch hedgehogs come and go from the boxin a known location.

Your PondKeeping your pond happy and healthy can sometimes be

tricky especially to keep the water clear and ensuring that

plants do not take over. If you have the right balance of

plants and oxygen, you will encourage wildlife and your

pond plants will grow tremendously.

If you find or think your pond is leaking, it is best to have

it drained and inspected. Make sure that before you empty

your pond you transfer your fish and plants into a suitable

containers which should be kept out of the sunshine. The

quickest way to drain is with an electric pump, here at

One important job in Autumn is to keep the water free

from decaying vegetation. Remove dead and dying foliage

regularly and cut back excess growth of pond plants. Place

some netting over the pond if possible to keep leaves and

During Winter months ice may form, trapping methane

gas which is released from decaying vegetation under the

water level and is potentially lethal to fish. Ice also exerts

excess pressure on the sides of concrete ponds, often

causing them to crack. Ensure that the pond remains free

of ice by floating a ball on the pond's surface.

parenting...To Vet or Not To VetIt was with mixed interest and alarm that I listened to thelatest crack pot idea to come from central government. It isn’t enough that local fetes, galas and events arecompletely hampered by bureaucratic red tape, particularly sowhen children are involved. Our elected representatives arenow hell bent on strangling the life from many local groups bymaking it a criminal offence for anyone who may have regularcontact with the children within the group not to be vetted.

The type of action which apparently will need to becovered by the new vetting system will include parentstransporting children, other than their own, to and from thegroup or a sporting activity, parents who regularly go intoschool to listen to children read and parents giving a handwith activities.

How many parents will happily go through the form fillingvetting procedure just to be able to help out now and again, Iknow I certainly won’t. And how many parents will see it asthe perfect get-out clause - “sorry can’t help, not vetted...”

Voluntary groups find it hard enough to get volunteers andhelp, this will make it many times harder.

It;’s not that I’m cavalier about the safety of children, I justwish sometimes that common sense would prevail!

Violent and sexual crimes against children are particularlyabhorent and unnatural and unfortunately such crimes aredealt with unbelieveably leniently by the courts.

The Mulberry Club

A community multi skills sports club for young

people with physical and learning difficulties.

Activities are delivered by experienced coaches in

a secure environment, aimed at impriving mobility

skills, coordination and balance. An opportunity to

make new friends and have fun. The club meets

every Monday evening during term time at

Havercroft Sports Centre. Session times are 6pm

- 7pm for 7-11 year olds and 7pm - 8pm for 12-18

Pugneys Swan & Wildlife Rescue

Looks after orphaned and injured wildlife until

ready for a safe release. We urgently need

donations of dog, cat food and biscuits, towels,

newspapers, etc. We are also short of indoor,

plastic guinea pig cages as we currently have 50

hedgehogs until the spring. We have no paid

staff, so volunteers required for practical and fund

raising help. We take suitable students for Duke of

Edinburgh and other placements.
