“Just Play Rugby”

Chairman of Council of Clubs Welcome. Today is a very special day for the players, coaches, referees, club administrators and our supporters. After 12 months of hard work, nervous but exciting times, the WBRU club finals are finally here to see who will be our 2019 Tui Cup champions and our Senior Reserves Champions. It is deserving, the two clubs, Gladstone and Martinborough, meet again after hard fought victories in their semi-finals and Greytown and Tuhirangi have been the two in form teams in the Reserve grade. To the other teams in their respective finals, we wish them all the best.

A special thank you to all our sponsors including Tui who have committed to another year with our proud union and all the people who have made an enormous effort to get Trust House Memorial Park running well on club finals day. A special mention to Stacey Puddy, who is head organiser for her third Tui Cup final and Farry McLeod who continues to keep the “nuts and bolts” of the facility going on a weekly basis. The club season has been dynamic on all fronts. There is no question, any person who is interested in our game, have all commented on how the standard of club rugby has lifted in the last 3 to 4 years and this year in particular, every team was capable (and did) beat each other. The strength in our club and college rugby, has seen for the first time, a local based Wairarapa Bush Farriers Heartland Rugby team announced earlier in the week. We as a union should take enormous pride in this. Again, I wish everyone the best of luck for today’s finals. Jason Carruthers, Chairman Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union President of Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union

Welcome to the WBRFU 2019 Club Rugby Finals. The Club season has been a competition of two halves (to borrow a quote from Sean Fitzpatrick) with the top four and bottom four being decided more or less quite early on after the first round. It is always sad when a club drops out but that is where Masterton Red Star found themselves and the competition went to seven teams.

Thank you to all the referees who have controlled the many club games throughout the season, for without you, there would be no rugby. The referees do not have an easy time with a lot of responsibility not only managing the game in hand but ensuring players’ health is uppermost with the innovation of the blue card. They also have to deal with rowdy and passionate club supporters – generally side-line behaviour has been better this year. Congratulations to all clubs and supporters. Good luck to all teams in the finals, enjoy your games, for many of you this will be the end of rugby for the season. For those of you in the representative team’s rugby will now carry on for another couple of months or so. Thank you to the many wives and girlfriends who patiently play second fiddle to RUGBY! To all the people - coaches and representative players going on to represent Wairarapa Bush in any grade we wish you good luck and all the best for the season. Rugby like all sports cannot do what we do or be who we are without the special relationships we have with our generous sponsors. We thank you and applaud you for allowing us to do what we do. Just a note, if you are wanting to come on board with us please do not hesitate in getting in touch. Bryan Weatherstone, President Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union

Wairarapa Bush Supporters Club Welcome all finalists and team supporters to the 2019 finals. This has been the closest competition for many years. The rugby this year has been of a high standard so hopefully we get a good rep team together. It was sad to see Masterton Red Star pull out of the Tui Cup part way through the season but without a back up reserves team they were always going to struggle. Rep season: an under strength team faced off against Hawkes Bay Saracens on Queens Birthday weekend. When combinations clicked in the second half, we looked very good. Bring on the Heartland season! The Supporters Club will be sending a bus to Paeroa on September 21st: this is a three-dayer. Friday; Masterton to Taupo, Saturday Taupo to Paeroa for a 1 o’clock game and returning to Taupo, then home on Sunday. This is our only North Island away game and is a subsidised trip costing $150. Anyone interested please enquire at the Gravel Pit or contact Bruce on 027 841 3165. We would also like to know the interest in going to Ashburton for the game against Mid Canterbury on the 12th of October. Best of luck finalists see you all at the mighty “Gravel Pitt” before and after the games. Dead Ball Charlie
