Waipahu High School Mr. Kawano – J8, J4, E4

Course Syllabus

Description: The world of technology requires all students to have computer knowledge. Learn to use the IBM and MAC computers for word processing, database, spreadsheet, PowerPoint and graphics for personal, classroom, and business use. Course Objectives

1. Introduce students to the basic functions of all applications in “Microsoft Office.” 2. Develop skills in word processing, spread sheets, presentation software, database software, and web

page creation software in order to gain skill and efficiency for both the academic and work world. 3. Explore other software and computer peripherals that work with “Microsoft Office.”

Attendance Policy: Refer to the Waipahu High School attendance policy. A Student with five (5) absences per class will receive a failing grade for the quarter unless an appeal form is filed and granted. It is the student’s responsibility to keep any excuse notes in the event there is an appeal or inquiry. Two (2) tardies will equate to one (1) absence. An absence referral will be sent to the councilors upon the 3rd and 5th absence each quarter. Students who are not present in a scheduled class for at least HALF of the class period will be marked “Absent.” Exceptions will be made for authorized school activity. Any student on an authorized activity will be considered present.

Make-up Work: Students are responsible for all assignments, tests, and quizzes given. A late assignment will earn a lower grade than the earned grade for each class day late. (For example, an “A” assignment turned in two class days late will be given a “C” grade.) A student returning to school with an excused absence note or tardy slip may make-up work missed. All work missed, must be turned in within two class days upon returning to school. Students are responsible for obtaining assignments when they are absent. Make-up test and quizzes are to be scheduled with the teacher.

S.U.R.F (Silent Uninterrupted Reading for Fun)

• During the first 10 minutes of every period • Free choice of reading materials. • Part of the workplace behavior grade.

Journal Writing Journal writing will be done once every other week. The topic of the journal writing will be determined by the teacher. Each month we will be concentrating on a different reading or writing strategy. Journal notebooks will be supplied by the teacher and are to be left in the classroom. Assessment for journals will be included in the overall grade for the quarter.
