At Arakura School, students geared themselves up in the colour of a daffodil, and dressed up in yellow for the day.

At Wainuiomata Intermediate, students had a mufti-day to raise money and show

their support towards the nationwide campaign.

Arakura School’s teacher aid Natanya Giles and her daughter Jorjah-Rose Giles, a student at the school, also showed their support with some freshly picked daffodils.

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s

annual fl agship event and one of the most im-portant fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country.

The donations received from it go towards vital scientifi c research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, as well as awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

The daffodil is one of the fi rst fl owers of spring, and inside the campaign, it represents the hope there is for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer.

ANZ Wainuiomata also pitched in over the month of August, raising money for the nationwide cause through selling daffodil pins.

Branch manager Tim Wilson says it has been amazing the amount of money that has been received in support, despite Wainuiomata being a small community.

“We get involved every year. It’s a huge event,” he says.

As well as selling daffodil day pins, ANZ Wai-nuiomata staff members started up the barbeque for a fundraising sausage sizzle on Friday. Another thing the branch did was hold a bake sale in store.

“The support has been incredible, thank you Wainuiomata,” Tim says.

Students in year 11 and 12 are being encouraged to step up for an opportunity of a life time, as the Hutt Sister City Foundation prepares for another annual exchange.

The Hutt Sister City Founda-tion currently runs two annual exchange programmes with its Tempe counterparts, including a student exchange which sees four young people host their Tempe ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ for fi ve weeks and then travel to Tempe for a fi ve-week home-stay after.

The other is a teacher ex-change where three teachers are selected to host others from Tempe, then travelling back

with them where they observe classes in Tempe schools and visit other educators.

Hutt Sister City Foundation president Jill Vrede says there has just been a very successful visit in Lower Hutt with four students from Tempe arriving in June. They were Jackie McFall, Nicole Holly, Emma Soley, and Jay Rothermel.

“The four New Zealand stu-dents—Jasmine Rivers, Kate Davy, Kristina Hutley, and Patrick Shepherd, and their families, welcomed them with open arms and the start of their great adventure in Lower Hutt and beyond started,” Jill says.

The students when back in Lower Hutt, visited Hutt Valley High School, Wainuio-

mata College, and Maungaraki School, as well as participating in mountain-biking and four wheel driving in Wainuiomata.

“All the students bonded really well and became known as the Fab8. Over the fi ve weeks, the Americans were here, a lot was

packed in and they returned to Tempe on July 4 having had an awesome experience,” Jill says.

Cristy Palaeologus, a primary school teacher from Tempe, spent three weeks with Glynis Skippers, a teacher from Epuni School.

For years, elderly residents have been fi ghting for a rest home and retirement village to be established in Wainuiomata; and a proposal to purchase land at Hugh Sinclair Park has been considered.

The proposal to purchase council land in Wainuiomata for the purpose of building a retirement village was put forward by charitable trust Masonic Villages Trust. The proposal is an offer of $275,000 for the 3.9 hectares of the park.

Current plans outlined by the trust are for a 48-bed rest home and hospital as well as 72 villas to be built on the area at the heart of Wainuiomata. Trust chief executive offi cer Warick Dunn says they are keen to help but need to be confi dent that a village will be fi nancially viable.

The section of land that has been proposed backs on to St Claudine Thévenet School. It can be accessed by Hinau Grove and The Strand.

Last year, a decision was made by Hutt City Council to revoke the reserve status of the land to allow developments such as this to come forward.

Mayor Ray Wallace says there is real concern from the people of Wainuiomata about the lack of appropriate housing and care facilities for the elderly.

“People who’ve spent their lives in Wainuio-mata don’t want to move away and sever their community connection when it comes time for them to consider a retirement home or rest home care,” Mayor Wallace says.

To revoke the reserve status, Hutt City Council received overwhelming local support and was also ratifi ed by the Department of Conservation.

Retirement village proposed

It’s something that has been on the cards for a number of years, and Wainuiomata could

nally be getting its own rest home and retirement village – if a proposal is accepted

by council. A meeting was held last night andWainuiomata News reporter Dan Whit eld caught up with parties involved to nd out

what has been planned.

Current plans outlined by the trust are for a 48-bed rest home and hospital as well as 72 villas to be built on the area at the heart of Wainuiomata. Trust chief executive offi cer Warick Dunn says Mr Dunn says after two years of investiga-

tion, the trust has made an offer for 3.9 hectares in Hugh Sinclair Park, and if the council accepts, there is a very good chance the village will become a reality.

“We still have to complete detailed costings, but strong community support and the central location of the proposed site – near the shops, medical centre and other amenities – are positives. We will make a fi nal decision in the next 12 months,” Mr Dunn says.

Masonic Villages Trust is one of the largest charitable aged care providers in the Southern-North Island, and the $275,000 offer to council refl ects the estimated $1.6 million cost of remediating the peat soils underlying the site.

“This proposal, while needing careful consideration and conditions to be met, is an exciting one to have on the table and I look forward to the discussion on Tuesday night,” Mayor Wallace says.

The full council meeting was held last night as the Wainuiomata News went to print, and a write up of the outcome will be in next week’s newspaper.

If successful the proposal will be subject to council undertaking the necessary district plan change so that zoning of the land allows for residential activity. The trust would still need to apply for a resource consent following the plan change.

Over the years, Grey Power Wainuiomata members have been a driving force behind the push to see a place of residence for elderly created in Wainuiomata.

In reply to the Wainuiomata News about the last night’s meeting, former president Ken Salmon hopes the proposal is accepted and that things can be put in motion.

A new underpass which opened last week has given cyclists and walkers in Seaview an alternative to crossing busy Seaview Rd.

The sealed underpass travels under the Seaview Bridge and is accessed near to the entrance of Hutt Park.

Mayor Ray Wallace attended the opening of the underpass on Wednesday last week and says it is an example of Hutt City Council’s commitment to improving cycling and walking opportunities across the city.

He says Seaview Rd is a busy area with lots of heavy vehicles on the road so the underpass is a fantastic option for cyclists and walkers who want to avoid this.

“We all know the benefi ts of cy-cling and walking such as improving

people’s health and reducing traffi c congestion,” Mayor Wallace says.

“Our policy and regulatory sub-committee recently recognised the strength of these benefi ts to our city by recommending council increase spending on cycling and walking initiatives by $3 million over three years. This will be considered next year during annual plan discus-sions,” he says.

The new underpass in Seaview is part of an initative to help everyone be able to access Hutt City in what-ever way they choose to travel and Mayor Wallace looks forward to supporting more initiatives.

Cans of spaghetti, baked beans, and even pineapple dotted the fl oor at Fernlea School last week, thanks to the generous and giving nature of students who got behind a com-munity initiative.

Over the week leading up to Friday, August 29, students from the school each brought a can – or cans – of food to school for NZCU Baywide’s ‘can-do’ food bank drive which has been running throughout this month.

The aim was to fi ll a giant map of New Zealand with cans, which will be donated

to the local food bank at the end of August – and student efforts saw more than 150 cans donated.

The NZCU Baywide ‘can-do’ initiative is an annual campaign to assist people around the community and enable them to put food on the table for their families over the winter months when budgets are stretched.

While there were numerous students, the Wainuiomata News met 16 students who happily helped the local cause.

The students included Hayley Symes, Charlotte Winter, Sapphire Kahui, Nyah Brouwer (5), Brooke Neary, Charlie McCord, Ruby Keomany, Sophine Neary (6), Noah Clarke, Dylan Adams, Jesse Mortensen, Noah Dyne (9), Ayra Kaushik, Chloe Smith, Pagan Marfell (10), and Ben Francis, 11.

NZCU Baywide’s Wainuiomata branch has been acting as a food bank depot for the month of August and staff members have been encouraging can donations from their members, local businesses and wider community.

Over the past month, NZCU Baywide staff member Jasmine Tipene says the support has been incredible.

“There’s been lots of support which has been great...All up we must have over 300 cans ready to donate to the Wainuiomata food bank,” she says.

Members of the community and local offi cials are praising repair work which has fi nally seen holes in the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre car park fi lled in.

Last week, local MP Trevor Mallard got in touch with the Wainuiomata News to discuss the state of the car park however, work to remedy the situation had already been completed.

In previous years, massive holes in the mall and countdown car park had been the discussion of the town, and at the peak of the problem, had hundreds turning to Facebook and YouTube to vent their frustrations.

MP Mallard tells the Wainuio-mata News that he had been on to management in the past and

was happy when they repaired the majority of the area, but says when some of the remaining holes started getting bigger, he started to get worried.

“If there are massive holes eve-rywhere it will put people off as people could fall into them...We need people to come. We need to be thriving,” he says.

As part of the remediation work, about five major holes were re-paired in the shopping centre car park.

Wainuiomata Shopping Centre manager David Tompkins says it was appreciated that the pot holes were an inconvenience; however it is a priority of the centre to ensure that they are repaired as soon as possible.

“With winter coming to an end

this will reduce the frequency of them appearing and the time frame that it will take to repair them,” David says.

The work was initially booked in approximately four weeks ago; unfortunately due to weather con-ditions work was unable to be performed.

“We managed to take advantage of a break in the weather and have the repairs carried out at the end of last week,” he says.

Mayor Ray Wallace, also a Wai-nuiomata resident: “The mall is an important part of Wainuiomata and it needs to be inviting to customers.”

Meeting the candidates Next Tuesday, Wainuiomata residents who have questions about their power bills will get the chance to ask them when the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner Scheme comes to the Hutt Valley next week. Members of the scheme will be visiting Moera Library on Tuesday, September 9, from 10am until noon.

Questions of power

Residents were very keen to keep it fi xed on Wainuiomata.

Labour’s Trevor Mallard, National’s Chris Bishop, Green’s Holly Walker, and United Future’s Dave Stonyer introduced themselves and touched on their links to the Hutt Valley. Candi-dates listed a few of their main policies and how that would affect people in the Hutt South area.

Key topics of conversation at the business breakfast included a retire-ment village in Wainuiomata, as well as transport and employment issues.

At the end of the day, it was really good meeting and members of the public left feeling informed, appreciat-ing the focus being on local issues.

The other four Hutt South electorate candidates that were not at the meet-ing included Conservative’s Gordon Copeland, ACT New Zealand’s Grae O’Sullivan, New Zealand First’s Mataroa Paroro, and independent representative Jan Pajak.

The election will be held on Saturday, September 20.

By Dan Whitfi eld

Four of eight Hutt South elector-ate candidates were at the centre of the public eye last Friday, as they stood up at the monthly Development Wainuiomata Busi-ness Breakfast and discussed what they had planned if suc-cessful in the upcoming election.

Representatives from National,

Labour, United Future, and the Green parties spoke about and outlined their vision for Wainuio-mata and Hutt South, enabling the public to ask questions and fi nd out more.

Attendance saw roughly 30 people present on the day, and questions asked were all focused on local issues which refl ected the tone of the debate.

Our readers have their say.

Dear Ed,We agree with Trevor, about moving

the speed camera, as once the car’s trucks, etc, pass the camera, they put their foot down and speed up the hill, sometimes the noise is horrendous.

We know – we live at the bottom of the hill, and often moan about the noise.

Yours faithfully,Peter Sanson and Doreen Lister

Dear Ed,I agree with Trevor

Mallard that the location of new speed camera is in the wrong place.

If we need to target drivers who are genu-inely putting lives at risk when speeding and if the NZTA want return of their investment by putting a camera on a well-used road, they should consider plac-

ing the camera along or around the Coast Road, perhaps around the old tip area.

Nearly every weekend in the quiet of the night you can hear from a distance, speeding ve-hicles revving engines and such. Occasionally a siren can be heard fol-lowing these vehicles but generally they just continue for up to a few

hours. So if it’s within earshot,

does this mean it’s an issue within residential areas and raises safety concerns? If so, then perhaps the NZTA will delay installation of the new camera until the community’s voice has been heard.

Regards, Concerned citizen

Dear Ed,Yes, I agree with Trevor Mallard.

The positioning of the new camera on Wainuiomata Road has to be just a revenue gatherer.

I would like to see the statistics from the NZTA to prove other-wise in light of more appropriate places in Wainuiomata for the

Speed camera in the wrong place

placing of the camera. Wellington road would be an ideal spot for the camera given the number of accidents there.

Construction work is now underway on at the Taita Sport and Community Centre in Lower Hutt.On 11 August, Mayor Ray Wallace and Alister Skene, the chair of the Community Facilities Trust, broke the ground at the site, marking the beginning of construc-tion on this new community facility. This centre for cultural and sporting activities will include a library, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a cafe and com-munity meeting spaces and will be used by residents from around the Hutt Valley.Mayor Ray Wallace says: “This will be a fantastic centre for the community’s sporting and cultural activities, a great cause for celebration.”A time capsule was buried in the centre’s grounds, to mark this moment in time for a future generation. St Claudine Thévenet School students are a bright and cheerful bunch, and with the school’s famous 50 cent day on its way; many are getting very excited.

Young Vinnies, along with year eight representatives from the student council, are jumping on board with the September school-based event asking the community to break open their piggy-banks to support.

Principal Sue Jury told the Wainuiomata News earlier this year about the day, explain-ing how it is a really fun day where students get to sell things for 50 cents, with the money helping the community.

St Claudine Thévenet School students are no strangers to helping their community, running

canned food drives in the past. The 50 cent day will see students run stalls,

selling lollies, toys, hand-made items, and lots more; as well as a number of activities keeping everyone entertained on the day.

Last week, students were busy preparing for the event, voicing how they want the community and school to start saving their 50 cent pieces to help them with fundraising.

The day is a special St Claudine Day, accord-ing to studentsl Ioana Manuele, Elise Watkins, and Saviour Tui.

The event is set to run at St Claudine Thévenet School on September 5, between 10.30am and 1pm.

If sunny, the event will be held out on the school courts; and if wet, it will be held in front of the classes on the decked area.

new centre for the Taita community and wider region. The blackboard will be stationed outside the Taita library to get more feedback from the community.

The valley will be coming alive with the sound of music for two lucky groups of residents, after winning tickets to The Sound Of Music.

Last month, the Wainuiomata News ran a competition which gave members of the community the chance to win tickets to Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian’s production of The Sound Of Music which opens at Wellington’s St James Theatre on September 12.

Jack Naik and Maree Carman were the winners of the competition and will be off to see the acclaimed production later this month.

The Sound Of Music will feature an

unforgettable score that includes some of the most famous songs ever performed on the musical stage, including; My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, and the title song The Sound of Music.

The production tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changes the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culmi-nating in the family’s escape across the mountains from Austria.

The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1959 to record-breaking advance ticket sales, where it won eight Tony Awards - including Best Musical.

Kieran Rayner is a versatile young baritone who has impressed Wellington audiences in roles ranging from Handel’s Alcina to Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins. His appearances with Orchestra Wellington embrace the same diversity: Bernstein’s Candide and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. Now Kieran takes a solo spot singing Mahler’s bittersweet tribute to the young and lovelorn, “Songs of a Wayfarer”. This song cycle is one of Mahler’s most popular works, setting the energy of a young and volatile heart against music that paints the beauty of nature.

Haydn’s Paris symphonies are a feature of Orchestra Wellington’s 2014 season, and this concert features two of them: Symphony No 86, and number 85, called

“La Reine” because Marie Antoinette her-self expressed her pleasure in it. Haydn’s personal style had free rein in these works, written for a wealthy and cultured Paris audience who could appreciate his genius. For the fi nal symphony in this series, Haydn created a richly-scored work to showcase the large and skilful Paris orchestra that commissioned him.

In 1783, Mozart wrote music for a pantomime based on commedia dell’arte fi gures, for friends and family to perform. Most of the music has vanished, but Rus-sian composer Alfred Schnittke fashioned a witty tribute out of what remains.

Lower Hutt is leading the region in getting property owners to take up the Warm up New Zealand: Healthy Homes insulation programme, with recent figures released by EECA showing 946 houses have been insulated using the subsidy.

Mayor Ray Wallace says it is impor-tant that Hutt City Council gets behind these types of programmes to reduce the health risks to people living in cold damp housing.

“We’ve actively been promoting this subsidy to all residents because we want property owners and landlords to take advantage of it. Ideally we should all be living in homes that are warm and dry and our most vulnerable members of the community shouldn’t be put at risk,” Mayor Wallace says.

“Along with seven other council’s we also offer a free in home eco design service where an advisor visits homes to help residents work through practical solutions for common housing problems like condensation and mould, and is able to make referrals for people that she works with that are eligible for the subsidy,” he says.

The subsidy is available to Hutt Valley residents who are most in need, but get the most out of the programme, they must fi rst meet the following criteria.

The criteria includes ensuring your home was built before 2000, and you are the home owner or main tenant with a Community Services Card, and there are children under 17-years-old,

Push for healthy, warm homes

or people over 65-years-old, or someone with high health needs living in the home, or you are a landlord with eligible tenants.

Hutt City Council’s eco design advisor Sarah Firth is holding a free community talk on practical solutions for common housing problems like condensation, mould, insulation, draughts and large heating bills.

She will be available for private con-sultations by calling 570 6927, otherwise people are encouraged to attend the free talk on Thursday, September 11. It is set to start at 5.30pm at the Sustainable Living Centre on High Street, Lower Hutt.

The Wainuiomata ANZ barbeque was cranking up some support for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day campaign on Friday, raising over $1500 – with help from in store fundraisers over August.

Each year ANZ staff get out in the com-munity to help raise much needed funds for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day campaign – and this year was no different.

Over the 23 years the bank has been involved with Daffodil Day, staff members have helped raise over $14.5 million dollars through local fundraising and collection within branches.

Wainuiomata branch staff Karen Buckley, Vicki Wortman and Cheris Babbington were out on the barbeque on Friday, running a sausage sizzle for the community.

Through the branch’s passion, enthusiasm and commitment to helping focus the na-tion’s attention on the event, with funds going straight to the Cancer Society.

Case no: 2393Adjudication by the New Zealand Press

Council on the complaint of Max Shierlaw against Wainuiomata News

Finding: Upheld in partIntroduction: Max Shierlaw, a Hutt City

Councillor, complained that the Wainuiomata News published:

- an article quoting anonymous player sources who said improvements to the local rugby ground were unsuccessful;

- an anonymous letter from a reader alleging local misuse of public funds.

Mr Shierlaw complained both made unsub-stantiated allegations, in breach of aspects of Principle 8 (Confi dentiality).

The complaint is not upheld in relation to the fi rst element about the upgrade of the rugby ground. The complaint is upheld on the second element in respect of the anonymous letter.

Background: The Wainuiomata News on June 11, 2014 published a news story about the upgrade of William Jones Park to provide a durable playing surface for rugby. The story was headlined “Upgrade “not worth it” “ and quoted critical comments from players, who wished to remain anonymous, saying the upgrade had not improved things. The story also quoted the Wainuiomata Rugby Club Chairman who strongly defended the improvements and explained there was a second stage of the upgrade to come.

On June 11 Wainuiomata News also pub-lished an anonymous letter from a reader who made a number of vague but potentially seri-ous allegations about local council members in the Hutt Valley.

The complaint: For both parts of his com-plaint Mr Shierlaw cites Principle 8 which reads: Confi dentiality - publications have a strong obligation to protect against disclosure of the identity of confi dential sources. They also have a duty to take reasonable steps to satisfy themselves that such sources are well informed and that the information they provide is reliable. Care should be taken to ensure both source and publication agrees over what has been meant by “off-the-record”.

Principle 1 “Accuracy, Fairness and Bal-ance” is also relevant, as is Principle 5 “Columns, Opinion and Letters”.

Taking fi rst the article on the rugby ground, the complainant believes that the use of critical comments from anonymous players was unjustifi ed. Those quoted were going on hearsay rather than personal experience of playing on the fi eld. The complainant believes that players who had recent experience of the

ground should instead have been consulted. The second element of the complaint con-

cerns the published anonymous letter making allegations about Hutt Valley councillors, including knowledge of and failure to act on, misuse of public funds; lack of accountability; and a question about possible local body employment issues. The complainant regards these allegations as serious, says there “is not a shred of evidence to back them” and that the anonymous letter has caused distress and given rise to mistaken allegations in the local community about who authored it.

The Response: On the rugby ground story, the reporter explained to the complainant that he had personally checked the state of the ground after a match and believed this confi rmed the players’ views about lack of improvement following the upgrade work. He noted that he had included in the story balanc-ing comment from the rugby club saying further improvements would bring the ground up to a standard comparable with Hutt Rec.

On the anonymous letter, the reporter told the complainant the letter was published as “part of a public forum”. He further claimed that the allegations “were backed up and although being anonymous there was evidence behind them”. He apologised to the complain-ant on both issues and hoped to discuss the matters in person with him.

The complainant was not satisfi ed, rejected a meeting, and complained to the Press Council.

The publisher has subsequently responded to the Council that he upholds the paper’s position on the rugby ground story. He defends the protection of the identity of the players, who feared an adverse impact on their playing careers if they were quoted in the story.

On the anonymous letter the publisher responds that the journalist tried but failed to contact the author before the letter was published. The publisher says “The letter was cut but should not have been published without speaking with the correspondent”. The publisher now notes that “the journalist understands our criteria for letters”. The com-plainant rejected a further offer of a meeting from the publisher.

Discussion and decision: The story on the rugby ground contained an account of views on both sides - those of the local rugby club and the criticism from players. While it would have been desirable to quote players who had personal experience of the upgraded ground rather than hearsay, the reporter claims that following a game he personally checked on the condition of the ground. An effort seems

to have been made to check validity of the facts as required by Principle 8, and in the Council’s view overall balance as required by Principle 1 was achieved in the story through quoting contrasting views on the condition of the ground.

The anonymous letter was published without checking with the author. No evidence was advanced in the response of the newspaper that other checks to test the validity of, or that any other support or evidence existed for, the potentially serious allegations made in the letter. The publisher has effectively conceded in his response that the letter should not have been published.

The Council’s Confi dentiality Principle re-quires reasonable steps to be taken to establish that confi dential sources are well informed and reliable. Principle 5 on columns, opinion and letters provides in part that “Letters for publication are the prerogative of editors who are to be guided by fairness, balance and public interest.” In a ruling of October 2010 the Council repeated its view that “Letters published with a pseudonym are no longer appropriate in almost every case in modern journalism. A publication which is available for public subscription does a disservice to its readers and the general principle of robust editorial debate by concealing the letter writ-ers’ names”. The Council went on to say that “The vast majority of newspapers now require correspondents to demonstrate the courage of their convictions by publishing their names.”

The Council fi nds that the publication of the anonymous letter did not meet the require-ments of its principles especially in relation to accuracy, fairness and balance.

The complaint is not upheld in relation to the story about the upgrade of the rugby ground.

The complaint is upheld in relation to the publication of the anonymous letter.

Press Council members considering the complaint were Sir John Hansen, Tim Beaglehole, Liz Brown, Peter Fa’afi u, Jenny Farrell, Sandy Gill, John Roughan, Marie Shroff, Vernon Small, Mark Stevens and Stephen Stewart.

People with a complaint against a newspaper or magazine should fi rst complain in writing to the editor of the publication and then, if not satisfi ed with the response, complain to the Press Council. Complaints can be lodged using the online complaint form or addressed to the Executive Director, P O Box 10 879, The Terrace, Wellington. Phone 473 5220 or 0800 969 357. Wounds such as cuts and scratches, grazes, lacerations, blisters and burns are a part of life. These can happen no matter how careful we are or how organised our homes or workplaces are.

Wounds occur when a physical injury to the body breaks the skin or a mucous membrane. The body repairs the wound by closing up the skin closing as soon as possible.

In the past many wounds have been “fi xed” with a plaster. These are fi ne for small scratches and cuts, but there are now many more dressings available for different types of wounds. Rather than keeping wounds dry, it is now recommended to keep them moist. This allows skin cells to grow more quickly, and gives a faster healing time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore the health of the tissue. Once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline can be used. Next dry the area and apply the dressing. However, if the wound is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed to prevent infection.

If the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor.

Wounds caused by burns must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Burns can sometimes be serious affecting many layers of tissues. Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

The pharmacists at Clive’s Unichem Pharmacy can explain the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or your fi rst aid kit.

Daffodil Day brings support

With the arrival of spring and the warmer and often windier weather many people are now also being affected by hay fever.

This is a common condition with rates of hay fever in New Zealand being amongst the highest worldwide.

Hay fever can make people feel quite miserable, with symptoms of itchy eyes, runny nose, sniffl es, sneezes and head-aches and often very similar symptoms to the common cold.

Symptoms of hay fever may not last long and can be more severe at certain times of the day, such as being more severe in the morning or in the evening when pollen counts are highest, as well as when the weather is hot and humid.

Hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis) develops in some people because of an overactive immune system.

This causes them to have allergic reactions to certain substances in the environment, generally called allergens or ‘triggers’.

Pollens from fl owers, grasses, trees and weeds are the most common allergens.

“People who get hay fever at this time of year have what is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis”, advise Self Care phar-macists, “but not everyone with hay fever reacts to pollen only at springtime.

Many people suffer from hay fever

symptoms all year round. They can be sensitive to animal dander

(dead skin cells from their pets), mould, and the house dust mite – a microscopic animal that lives in the millions in our pillows, bedding, curtains and carpets”.

In addition, cigarette smoke (yours or someone else’s), chemical fumes and dusts in certain workplaces, and sudden temperature changes can make hay fever symptoms worse by irritating an already-sensitive nose.

Many hay fever sufferers also have other allergic conditions like asthma, eczema and food allergies - because of their over-active immune systems.

The good news is that hay fever symp-toms sometimes can be prevented and, usually, can be well-controlled.

“Effective treatments are available”, say Self Care pharmacists, “but trying to avoid the things that ‘trigger’ your hay fever symptoms is a good fi rst step.

Ask us about the Hay fever fact card which has plenty of self care tips for avoiding pollens and other allergens.”

If avoiding ‘triggers’ is not possible, antihistamine medicines can be effective.

These block the action of the chemical histamine which is released in your body when you come into contact with an allergen.

There are many different antihistamines

to choose from, which are available as pills to take, or as nasal sprays to use directly in the nose.

Some antihistamines can make you sleepy and may affect your ability to drive.

It is important to get advice from your Self Care pharmacist regarding the best antihistamine for you.

Antihistamines help with runny noses, itchy throats and ears, and sneezing symptoms.

For blocked noses, other medicines can be used, such as decongestant nasal sprays - but the use of these is limited, usually only up to 3 days at a time because of the chance of congestion reoccurring.

There are also corticosteroid nasal sprays which are helpful for people with moderate-to-severe hay fever, and for those who get hay fever symptoms all year round.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays take a few days to work to full effect and should be used regularly everyday, even when symptoms are not present.

They can be used for prevention but to be effective for this, they have to be started before you are in contact with the allergen.

WAINUIOMATA SPRING FLOWER SHOW

ARE YOU LEARNING ENGLISH?

The Wainuiomata Spring Flower Show will be held on SUNDAY 7th September at Wainuiomata Primary School Hall. Entries accepted from 9 to 11.30 and public viewing from 2-3.30pm. General Public very welcome – come and see the beautiful owers which residents of Wainuiomata Library. Enquiries Joyce 564 8135.

The country’s leading in-home childcare and training provider is exploring an opportunity which will positively change early child-hood education paradigms in New Zealand.

PORSE has branches in Lower and Upper Hutt, and offi cials have been engaged in early discussions with another similar organisation, which is planning to list on the NZ Stock Exchange – joining with centre-based ECE providers.

Managing director Jenny Yule says this is an opportunity to continue to innovate, grow and lift the fi eld of early childhood education that en-courages partnership, collaboration and innovation across all service types.

“It is not the source from which the funds are derived, but the purpose to which they are to be applied, that makes a difference,” she says.

The proposed opportunity if suc-cessful would provide PORSE with the resources on an international platform to add power to its vision, as well as giving mums and dads a chance to be invested in a movement in early childhood education that impacts positive social change.

“Living and learning begins at home. We are still affi rming the need for families to raise their babies in connected attachment relationships.”

Discussions are still in the early stages and a decision is expected at the end of September.

It’s time to dust off the memo-rabilia, dig out the old photos and relive the memories that have been made in a Holden.

As part of its 60 year celebrations, Holden is asking its most devoted fans, including those in Wainuio-mata, to share their memories through its 60 years loyal interac-tive timeline. To rev the engines of its fans, Holden will choose one lucky storyteller to win a fully restored 1969 Holden Monaro.

Much has changed since the fi rst FJ Holden rolled onto New Zealand soil in 1954, but Holden’s reputation for performance, safety, economy and style has endured.

“We’ve come a long way in 60

years, as a company and a country, and our history is New Zealand history. We hope New Zealanders will join us in adding their stories to the Holden history books,” says Holden New Zealand managing director Jeff Murray.

Murray is humbled by the depth of emotion in the stories that have been shared so far. “Gathering these stories together to create the timeline is a heart-warming experi-ence. We look forward to creating another 60 years of memories with New Zealand alongside us,” says Murray.

Holden fans can share their stories, photos and videos at www.60yearsloyal.co.nz.

Move over Michael Jordan, Wainuiomata High School has the court now; with three teams making the basketball fi nals in three respected age-division.

Juanita Sage and Tyla-Jean Oti-Lahood, co-captains for the senior girls basketball team, sat down with the Wainuiomata News to discuss how they feel the team went over the season following a impressive win over the weekend.

Wainuiomata was undefeated throughout most of its season, only losing its fi rst game of the senior girls’ competition against Porirua College – but overcame the side later in the season.

Tyla says for most of the team it was their fi rst game, so there were lots of things we needed to work on; and the team put the effort in to get better.

The team made the fi nals after Wellington College pulled out of the semi-fi nals.

Friday’s game plan for the team was to “play our game,” says Tyla

“We wanted to do what we do best,” added Juanita.

The girls team played Porirua College on Friday night, fi nishing with a score of 35-10

and defeating the side once again. The game was Wainuiomata’s basically from the start with the girls showing how they had improved over the season.

The two girls want to thank their coach-ing staff, including Callum and Barbara Henare.

To senior boys basketball, the Wainuio-mata High School team went into its fi nal against Aotea counterparts on Thursday night, but unfortunately lost 69-71.

Led by Tyler Heath, he had advised his team leading up to the game to get “psyched up,” following a season of ups and downs, and growing as a squad.

Coach Joe Hemi says he has coached the majority of the boys since they were in the junior league.

“Finishing in the top four was always the plan, right from the beginning,” Joe says.

The Wainuiomata News sat down with Tyler and Joe on Thursday before the game, and both were focused on the team securing a win.

“We’re aiming to play an up tempo game…Changing up the norm,” Joes says.

Thursday’s game was a close game with the team playing well as together, but Aotea

counterparts ran away with the game in the last few minutes.

The lost means Wainuiomata were not able to back up the championship title from the previous year.

In the junior division of the sport, Wai-nuiomata’s team also had an excellent season, with “huge accomplishments,” according to Joe.

In the team’s fi nal, Wainuiomata played St Bernard’s but lost by 16 points.

The boys played a really good game, because in previous games St Bernard’s had won all games by more than 40 points. “So to lose by 16 is, in itself an accomplish-ment,” Joe says.

“They really sharpened up, both physi-cally and mentally…It was a building season as many of the boys were new to the game, but to make the fi nals was great,” he says.

A stand out player from the junior Wai-nuiomata team was Jason Taituare, a year 7 student from Wainuiomata Intermediate.

Last week’s games marked the end of the season for all players, with coaching staff now working towards next year’s competition.

The community is being asked to get up and give it a go after Sports Wainuiomata launched a new sporting series on Monday.

The Give it a Go Septem-ber series kicked off with great success, and will see it involve a number of com-munity groups and clubs teaming up to deliver events targeted at the people of Wai-nuiomata – ranging in age.

Project coordinator Terina Cowan says the night was not just about launching what Sport Wainuiomata is doing, it was also about promoting other groups and celebrating the community’s shared success.

“We want to encourage more people to host events in Wainuiomata because we

believe our community has so much to offer,” Terina says.

The series kicked off earlier in the week and already has seen most events booked out completely.

Turbo touch coordinator Chrissy Rouru says: “[It] has proved just as popular as basketball which was booked out last week, people are re-ally responding to getting out and supporting local events is great to see.”

Basketball, children’s in-line hockey, turbo touch and rock ‘n’ roll all begin this week but registration is needed as events are fi lling up quickly.

For more information, contact Terina Cowan on 027 264 553.

Jared Paku has gone toe-to-toe with a guy that is almost twice the size of him.

The little fi ghter stepped into the ring for the Manawatu Championships, winning the 40kg class and leaving the competition with another top spot he can be proud of.

On the night, Jared did not have any opposition in his weight division that wanted to fi ght, so organisers of the championships agreed with a ruling that let him fi ght in a

higher weight division.Rob Cameron, from Wai-

nuiomata Boxing Club, says it was a good fi ght, close fi ght.

Jared won his fight with majority vote, after judges awarded him with two victo-ries from three fi ghts.

His competitor was from Rotorua.

Wainuiomata boxing sen-sation and Wellington-Hutt Valley Boxing Team’s Ray-mond Seamanu also left the Manawatu competition with an unopposed title, having no one to fi ght in the 51kg open class.

It was a comeback like no other as Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball fi nally sealed a victory over Naenae Collegians United – after losing its previous three encounters.

Ulalei beat NNCU by 32 points to 27 in what was dubbed a ‘thriller’ of a game; and for the side to win was a huge achieve-ment.

The team now has the premier two championship title.

NNCU started strongly taking a seven goal lead after the fi rst quarter and at half time were ahead by six goals. But Ulalei were not out, making a number of changes including the centre wing attack combination – Atiria Semmens and Moli Tauaneai.

This opened up the attack end for Ulalei, with the ball easily fed into goal shooters, Gene Solia-Gibb and Sina Tamaalii.

The defensive circle was relent-less with Lilly Laban and Sum-mer Murray taking intercepts, tips and numerous rebounds to cause havoc for the NNCU shooters.

Ulalei won the third quarter, turning out a six point deficit into a two point lead; and with

momentum, superior fi tness and natural ability meant the side went into the fi nal quarter full of confi dence.

The Wainuiomata players were able to play as a team to steal a comeback victory and take the championship. To complete the win, the player of the fi nal was awarded to Ulalei’s Lilly Laban.

Both teams have met three times prior to the final, with NNCU winning all three match-es, convincingly. Despite this, Ulalei went into the fi nal fi red up, having trained hard and worked on their combinations to fi nally produce the winning formula at the perfect time.

The weekend loss for NNCU in the grand fi nal was the team’s fi rst loss of the season.

“We would like to thank all the supporters that came to the fi nal, they were vocal and defi nitely had an impact on the team, with every goal and turnover met with rapturous applause,” says the Ulalei’s Karen Sagaga.

The win puts the icing on the Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball’s 10 year celebration cake – with the team and club celebrating its 10 year anniversary later this month.

Wainuiomata High School’s senior league team had its first pre-season match up against the Wellington Orcas on Sunday, preparing it for a busy draw over the next few months.

The friendly match was a warm up for the boys and was played in Wainuiomata over the weekend, seeing the locals take out a victory.

The high school’s senior boy’s football team played its fi nals at Rongotai College on Saturday, coming up against Naenae but losing in the dying minutes of the game.

The team played hard, but failed to keep up defence allowing its counterparts to take the 1-1 draw that had been in place for most of the game, to a 2-1 win.
