Countdown has purchased land from Waimea Richmond Fu-neral Services on the corner of Champion and Salisbury roads near Richmond, although the supermarket chain says it’s too early to disclose plans for the site’s development.Last week, the Waimea Weekly revealed that the funeral com-pany run by the Day family trust was selling part of the 1.9 hectare site but they could not name the buyer due to a con-fidentiality agreement. Francis Day confirmed they are re-maining on the site and would

have plans for the upgrade of their facilities at Waimea Rich-mond Funeral Services ready by the end of the year. However, this week super-market chain Progressive con-firmed it has purchased the land, possibly for a new Count-down supermarket.

“We can confirm that we have purchased a site in Richmond but at the moment it’s very early days in the planning pro-cess. We’re happy to update you further as we move forward,” a spokesperson for Countdown says.Francis says they are retaining “a substantial part of the site” and will be building a modern funeral home on the property. Monumental masons, G Miller and Sons, which is presently lo-cated on the site, will be mov-ing to a nearby industrial site, Francis says.

for surgery last year as a result of tooth decay, costing more than $1 million.Although tooth decay is a seri-ous consequence of excessive sugar consumption, Rob says that’s just the start. He says the teeth are “like the canary in the mine” too, because too much sugary drink leads to diabetes and obesity. “I urge all parents out there to look at the sugar intake of their family and make positive changes to the family eating pattern to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet.”Rob, who was in the Rich-mond Mall on Monday pro-moting Oral Health Week says the main source of sugar for children and teenagers is soft drinks. A display in the mall shows that one 330 millilitre can of Coke contains nine tea-spoons of sugar, which is three times the daily requirement for a child. “We are saying don’t drink your sugar. It’s become a real prob-lem over the last 10 or 15 years because between 2000 and 2006 our soft drink consump-tion doubled,” he says.Waimea College student Bron-son Morrell-Hopa was im-

pressed with the display, saying he didn’t realise that soft drink contained so much sugar. “That’s pretty bad. I’m glad I gave up drinking that stuff - I used to drink a large bottle of

fizzy drink a day but all my friends were drinking a lot of water so I thought I’d try.” The NMDBH Oral Health Week display will be in the mall this week from 11am to 2pm.

The Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive had to step outside its brief on Friday – giving more than $10,000 and splitting the money to more than just one group. The big winners were the Stoke Commu-nity Centre, which came away with $5000, and the Nelson South Swim Club, which was given $4000 cash. But the other three finalists that gathered on Friday morning to hear the final results didn’t leave empty-handed. The Food for Families Trust and the Richmond-based Pinnacle House Trust each walked away with $1000, and the Tasman Music Trust was given $500.

Car Company managing director Shane Drummond says the drive was a fantastic way to give to the community and he was blown away with the 59 entries to the com-petition. “There was a great cross-section and obviously plenty of need out there, so it was great to be able to help these three groups. I can honestly say three of them I’d never heard of before so it’s nice to be able to help them.”The Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive was devised to flip requests for sponsor-ship on its head. Shane says he would get hundreds of requests for sponsorship each year so decided to run the competition to

see which was the most worthy. Entries were whittled down to five finalists and each of the finalists spoke to the judg-ing panel last week. The judges – Shane, Mediaworks general manager Christine Hatton, Waimea Week-ly editor Andrew Board and the independ-ent judge Tracey Black – then picked their winners.Manager of the Stoke Community Centre, Ruth Ryan, was clearly shocked when the announcement was made and says it will go a long way to helping the group. “I’m so stoked, it’s amazing. We were hap-py just to make the top five but to win it

was just ‘wow’.”She says the money will be used to buy a new commercial freezer. “We’re in des-perate need for a freezer because we cook every day and we need space for food that we buy, so we’re delighted.”The Stoke Community Centre has 450 members and it has around 50-60 people come through its small hall each day. Ruth says many of its members had been pray-ing for them. “We’d like to thank them for their prayers and to Shane and the Car Company for putting up the money. It’s an amazing thing to do.”

A Nelson man raising money for life-saving surgery has had a donation buck-et stolen.Mike Corkill received a phone call last Wednesday to say an empty bucket, with a photo of his family on the front, had been found outside McDonald’s on Richmond’s Queen St.Mike got on the phone to some of the businesses that have a donation bucket on their counters and it was found to have been stolen from Action Indoor Sports, not far from where the bucket

was found.Mike – whose campaign to raise money was dubbed Dad’s New Lungs by his six children – says he was “gutted” by the theft. “It’s a blow. I knew there were scum-bags out there but I didn’t think anyone would stoop that low.”It’s unknown how much money was in

the bucket, but a staff member at Ac-tion told Mike she felt it just days before it was stolen and described it as “quite weighty”.Staff from Action Indoor Sports are go-ing through security footage from when the bucket was taken and Mike says he will take the image to the police.“I wanted to take it to the police because I didn’t want this person to get away with it,” he says.Mike has raised $34,500 so far but needs $100,000 for a pair of new lungs. With-out a full transplant, Mike has been told he will die within a year.

A dynasty of tree-planters were special guests at the 60th an-niversary celebrations of the Coronation Forest, held in the forest near the top of the Spooners. The forest was opened on June 8, 1954, when primary school children from around the Nel-son-Tasman region each plant-ed a tree to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The tree-planting became an annual event and last Fri-day about 70 people, includ-ing families who have been in-volved in the tree planting for three generations, attended the anniversary celebrations.“I planted my first tree here in 1958 when I was at Wakefield School,” Stanley Brook’s Geral-dine Carleton says. “I remem-ber it clearly because it snowed - it was freezing”.“My daughter also planted a tree here when she was at school and now it’s my grand-sons’ turn. My father, Ray Mansbridge, was a woodsman at Golden Downs for five years as well, so we have a long asso-ciation with the forest.”Geraldine’s daughter Ka-ren Carleton, also of Stanley Brook, planted a tree in the forest when she was at Tapaw-era Area School about 30 years

ago. This week Geraldine’s grandsons, Kahu Heta and Jack Hicks, continued the family tradition by planting their first trees in the forest.Pupils from nine schools at-tended last week’s anniversary, and Henley teacher Amy Chip-pendale says visiting Corona-tion Forest is a good experi-ence for the children because it gives them an insight into the forestry industry. “I came up here when I was a student at Tahuna School and my mother came up here and planted trees as well,” Amy says “It’s a good opportunity for the students to learn about forests and how they are such an im-

portant part of Nelson.”Nelson Forests Andrew Karalus says Coronation Forest was the “brainchild” of Arnold Cork, a senior agricultural ad-visor to the Nelson Education Board. Andrew estimates that 40,000 children have planted trees in the forest over the last 60 years, with about 350 visit-ing the forest this week. The anniversary also featured a presentation to long-serving forestry workers, John Ward and Don Cooper, and prizes for an school essay competi-tion won by Mahana’s Bradley Gale. Musician Roger Lusby also performed a song he wrote for the 60th anniversary.

All Black legend Buck Shelford was among the 109 runners and walkers who raised more than $3000 for Blue September on Father’s Day.The five kilometre fun run was organised by MS Ford as an awareness and fundrais-ing drive for Blue Septem-ber, which is held to promote awareness around prostate cancer.

It’s the first time the Blue Sep-tember fun run has been held and it took participants from the new Maitai walkway, next to the Trafalgar Centre, to Mi-yazu Gardens, around Found-ers Heritage Park and back to the start line. MS Ford dealer principal Alan Kirby says he was thrilled with the day.“We were really nervous be-

cause we were told that it’s impossible to get men along to these events. But for a first-time event, I’m delighted with the turnout and the enthusi-asm of everyone there.”Alan hinted that the fun run would be back next year and he’d like to see “double the numbers”. “We’re delighted with it, it was very cool.”

Wine industry pio-neers, Agnes and Her-mann Seifried, have been honoured by their peers, being in-ducted as Fellows of New Zealand Wine-growers 41 years after they planted their first vineyard in Upper Moutere. Herman and Agnes received the honour at the annual Bragato Conference and Wine Awards held in Blen-heim on August 28. It is the first time either a couple or a female has been inducted into the fellowship which started in 1982 and Agnes says she is hum-bled by the honour. “After forty years of wine production, we are so very proud to be acknowledged in this way,” Agnes says. “It is humbling to be part of such an amazing group many of whom we have worked with, and respected, over the years.”Agnes and Hermann first planted grapes on two hectares of land

in Upper Moutere in 1973, making Seifried Estate the first com-mercial vineyard, not only in the Nelson re-gion, but also in the South Island. It was a bold decision at a time when many peo-ple thought the South Island was unsuitable for wine growing. “We went to the bank for a loan but they didn’t want to know us,” Ag-nes says. “Everyone told us we were mad planting in Upper Moutere, but we did it anyway.” Seifrieds produced their first vintage in 1976, selling the wine through the cellar

door and mail orders to friends and fam-ily. They planted a further 16 hectares in Redwood Valley and continued to ex-pand, today employ-ing about 40 full-time staff and growing over 200 hectares of grapes across eight vineyards. “I still have the old address book with all the names of the peo-ple who ordered our wine,” Agnes says. “I used to hand address 4000 mail orders each year and put them on the Newmans bus that came by the winery.”Agnes says they worked extremely hard to get their busi-

ness started, although the long hours didn’t count because they were enjoying them-selves. Today, Agnes and Her-mann’s three children also work at Seifried Estate, with Chris and Heidi involved in viti-culture and winemak-ing and Anna taking a role in sales and mar-keting. All three have gained tertiary quali-fications in the wine industry. “We are very much a hands-on family busi-ness and to share this achievement with our children, who are all fully involved in the winery operation, is a career highlight for myself and Hermann,” Agnes says. Although Hermann has stepped back from the winemaking and marketing, he is still busy in the vineyard.“I enjoy the whole process and it’s satis-fying being involved with everything that goes into making the end result.”

Jesse nails apprentice awardComan Construction’s Jesse Walker has been named the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year. Photo: Simon Bloomberg

Jesse Walker decided he wanted to be a builder when he was only 14. Six years later the Nelson chippie completed his apprenticeship with flying colours, being named the Up-per South Island Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year. Jesse, who works for Coman Construction, received the award at a function in Blenheim last Thurs-day. “I was helping out my uncle when I was 14. He was doing some work on a house and that’s when I decided I wanted to be a builder,” Jesse says.“I really enjoy it. No job is the same and it’s really satisfying looking at the building at the end of the day and seeing what you have achieved.”Jesse says he did the trade build-ing course at Nelson College and then started a building apprentice-ship with Coman Construction, af-ter leaving school in year 13 in May 2010. He completed his apprentice-ship three months ago and says he plans to stay with Comans because he enjoys working on the bigger

commercial projects.“The commercial buildings are really interesting and Comans are great to work for, so I’m not going anywhere. I want to get as much experience as I can and hopefully, one day, become a site foreman and project manager.”Coman Construction contracts manager Ben Coman says Jesse has always “taken a lot of pride in his workmanship, and demonstrated initiative and a willingness to learn”. “We’ve seen Jesse develop into a skilled tradesman and a young man full of energy with huge leadership ability - we are all very proud of his achievement.”It is the second time in five years that Coman Construction has been represented in the awards, after Sh-ayne Dickinson won the Top of the South award and finished second in the national finals in 2009. Ben says Coman Construction presently em-ploys six apprentices.Jesse’s prizes included a choice of either a study grant to the value of $2000, or $2000 to spend at Carters.

The Hope Ranzau Women’s Institute has been going for 82 years and, incredibly, Rich-mond’s Jess Amberger has been there for 58 of those.Jess joined the Women’s Insti-tute in Collingwood in 1953 be-fore moving to Hope and link-ing with the Richmond-based group in 1956. Last Wednesday, Jess received her 60 Year Ser-vice Badge at the Hope-Ran-zau group’s monthly meeting at the Senior Citizen’s Hall in Richmond. “I joined when we moved up to Pakawau because it was a good way of meet-

ing people,” Jess says. “Then we moved to Hope so I joined the Hope-Ranzau group to get to know all the people around here. “I really enjoy the social side of the group. We also do a lot of community work which I enjoy too.”Jess says the social interaction with group members has be-come more important for her over the last 11 years, follow-ing the loss of her husband. She has also been involved in the group’s administration, spend-ing a number of years as presi-dent and secretary.

President Melva Lawson says many of their 32 members have been with the group for a long time, although only Jess, Mar-garet Waddington and Betty Donaldson have been there for 60 years. The long-serving trio have made a valuable contribu-tion to the group’s community projects, including collecting for charity appeals, knitting for premature babies and making slippers for kindergartens. The Hope Ranzau Women’s In-stitute meets at the Senior Citi-zens Hall on the first Wednes-day of every month.

Tickets are now on sale for the Nelson Young Professionals ball, the group’s premier event. The group’s fifth annual ball will be held on Oc-tober 11 at the Boat House on Wakefield Quay.Committee member Wes Malcolm says the 140 tickets are now on sale for the Casino Royale-themed ball. “This is our premier event of the whole year so we’re expecting tickets to sell pretty quickly. “This year’s theme is Casino Royale, thanks to Jens Hansen, so there will be plenty of decora-tions -- it will be done properly. We’ve spent a lot of time and money to make the event top class.”Wes says the ball is for anyone in their 20s or 30s and you don’t have to have had any associa-tion with the group before.“It’s open to absolutely everyone, but if you’re a signed up member tickets are $49 and if you’re not, tickets are $70. That covers your alcohol and food for the night and we’ll have two great bands playing,” he says. “It will be a fantastic night.”Wes says there will also be security, and dedi-cated taxi zones.People wanting to buy tickets for the ball can visit www.nyp.co.nz.

Hunters are preparing to head into the backcountry around Nelson and beyond later this month in search of a prize-winning pig for the Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge. And there will be plenty at stake with over $5000 worth of prizes in-cluding the big one of $1000 spon-sored by the Concrete Company for the average weight. There’s also $500 for the heaviest pig and good prizes for the women’s and inter-mediate sections as well as some top spot prizes. But one of the organisers, Bevan

Muollo says there’s much more to the event than chasing the big pigs and prize-money. He says the weigh-in at the Wanderers Sports Club is also a great day out for the family with a hangi and plenty of entertainment for the children. “We always make sure it’s a day out for the whole family,” Bevan says. “There’ll be bouncy castles and ob-stacle races and lots of prizes for the junior section. We also have a hangi in the evening which is al-ways a real highlight. George Paki Paki puts it down and he does a great job - last year it was massive.”

Bevan says the entry fee includes a meal from the hangi but anyone can purchase a ticket for a hangi meal for $10.The event is one of the main fun-draisers for the Wanderers Rugby Club’s junior teams and Bevan hopes it will be well supported by the community. “It’s important because the money we raise helps keep the cost of playing rugby down. If we didn’t have events like this rugby subs would go up so we need the community to support it.”Bevan says the business commu-nity has got right behind the event

with sponsors providing the cash and spot prizes which include a helicopter flight with Helicharter Nelson, a set of four-wheel-drive tyres from Jacks Tyres and a dog box from Ace Engineering. The Waimea Weekly has also come on board as the naming sponsor for this year’s event. The Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge starts at 12am on Thursday Sep-tember 25 with the weigh-in on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.People can enter the event by downloading the entry form off the website wandererssports.co.nz

I’d heard about Summer Camp USA and decided it sounded like the sort of adventure she was looking for.”She says she was based at Camp Pinecliffe in Maine and she was a small craft instructor, which meant she taught sailing, kayaking, ca-noeing and paddle boarding. “Best job ever!”In the evenings and mornings I stayed with my bunk of 10 girls who were aged 10 years old. Just hanging out, plaiting hair, painting nails and making sure they were ready for their day of ac-tivities.”There were tough times, she says, mainly when the young girls were homesick. “But when you’re trying to console them and distract them with something else, it’s really hard not to think about your own family. All I wanted was a cuddle from my mum too.”The information evening for people aged be-tween 18-30, is on September 10 at 6pm. It is in room T309, Level 3, T Block at NMIT. Two Nelson early childhood teach-ers, Jo Brown and Linda Hansen, are doing their bit to help the en-vironment by developing and mar-keting a new eco-friendly food wrapper made of cotton and bees-wax.Jo and Linda officially launched the wrapper, which they have named Happbee Wrap, at the Richmond market held at the A & P Show-grounds last Saturday. The pair has formed a small busi-ness making handcrafted, eco-friendly items and they are hoping Happbee Wrap will provide a green alternative to plastic food wraps.“We have enjoyed making things for a long time now and used to joke about starting a business to sell these things and now we have done it,” Jo says. “Linda saw the idea of a cotton food wrap and we thought it had lots of potential for it for our busi-ness. “We know quite a few schools and kindergartens already discour-age plastic wraps in the children’s lunches so there was an opportu-nity for us to make something like

this. We hope our wrap will be-come a product that will be used by the wider community to help protect our environment.”Jo says the name Happbee Wrap is pronounced happy wrap “as op-posed to Glad Wrap or Sad Wrap as some people call it”. The wrap is made from cotton fab-ric infused with beeswax they ob-tained from Jo’s son-in-law Nick Milne who is a Hope-based bee-keeper. It is reusable and washable in cool soapy water.

News16 WEDNESDAY 10 September 2014

It was a celebration of Maori culture, friends and whanau as Richmond School laid down and dug up their Hangi last Friday. Students from the schools year one and two syndicates have been learning all about Maori myths and legends this term as well as some el-ements of traditional Maori culture including the Haka, Poi and Waiata. Their terms work culminated in a Hangi that fed the children, parents and helpers for lunch. Several of those who assisted in the preparation of the Hangi had been up since 5am with some of the children and their families turning up at 7am to watch the food going into the pit. The children had set aside the day before to peel, chop and package all the vegetables they want-ed in their food baskets which were dug up just in time for lunch, to the relief of some hungry stomachs. There was plenty to share with friends and fam-ily but before everyone was allowed to dig in, the children put on a performance of the things they’d learnt in their Maori arts interchange and Kereama Payn performed the blessing. The school extends a huge thankyou to all the par-ents who donated the necessary items for the Hangi and to Kereama Payn, Carlo Goodwin and Dean Wilkinson for their hard work in the preparation of the pit.

Growing your own fresh food is an attractive proposition for many people but it’s not as easy as it seems. Agribusiness Training are offer-ing keen gardeners the chance take part in their vegetable production course, a 10-12 month course of part time study that looks at a num-ber of important elements for the successful production and main-tenance of plants. Agribusiness is a national agriculture/horticulture training provider and through their year long course, students can com-plete a National Certificate in Hor-ticulture, an industry recognised qualification. It’s not just for those looking to join the horticulture industry, home gardeners with a desire to improve their skills are more than welcome to take part and learn from local tu-tor, Kirsty Tough as she guides her them through the ins and outs of what can be a very rewarding hobby or career. The course covers a number of top-ics from plant botany and under-standing how plants work to plant care, soil structure and using fer-tilisers and pest, disease and weed control. Understanding your plants is key to growing the best produce but the

great thing about this course is that the lessons they learn are relevant to more than just vegetables. “It doesn’t have to be someone who is planting a vege garden,” says Kirsty. “We can apply all the principles we are learning to any sort of garden-ing, so you can plant flower gar-dens, trees and shrubs, any sort of horticulture growth.” The majority of the course is theory based but the class will regularly take part in practical learning and assessments including the creation of their own compost pile and con-structing an irrigation system. Course fees cover all the resourc-es needed to complete the cer-tificate and lessons are conducted from Broadgreen Intermediate on Wednesday evenings, making them accessible to people working dur-ing the day. It’s a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere to learn in says Kirsty, the class sizes of around 15 makes for great discussions and di-verging from the lesson plan to ex-plore other points of interest is all part of the process. To grab a spot in the next course that starts on September 24, call the Agribusiness office on 0508 247 428 ext 4 for an enrolment pack and start growing.

some young pullets that will lay lots of eggs for you. No point in feeding fowls that are not going to lay! Here at Ap-pletons we always have brown shaver pullets at the start of their laying lives. Well grown, well feed and raised in hen houses with access to green pad-docks! We love our chooks! We have 14 week old pullets that are ready to go to new homes. Begg’s Musicworks is clearing its range of hi-fi speakers and it’s the good folk Nelson who are set to benefit.Begg’s has a huge range of hi-fi speaker systems, usually priced from $1000 up. But owner Tim Bab-bage is making way for new stock and says he wants to clear the shop of its current speakers so has slashed the price, some by as much as 50 per cent. The speakers are the latest in hi-fi technology, but with many of the brands making way for new models in the next few months Tim says it is time to move the current stock on.“We usually do these kind of sales in drips and drabs but this time we’ve decided to do it in one big hit. There’s some absolute bargains here.“But the specials only apply to what’s in stock and it’s first in first served, and if people need an amp or other device to go with it we’ll look after them.”

Models are usually upgraded every four or five years but Tim says it happens that several of his suppliers are changing at the same time, which has led to the sale.

“There’s at least 30 per cent of every pair of hi-fi speak-ers in stock and in some cas-es there is even more. One set off speakers was $2800, now they’re $1400, so there’s some great savings.”Speakers range in size from the smaller “book shelf ” speakers to floor standing speakers. “Anyone looking to upgrade their speakers or looking for some great hi-fi speakers, now is the time to come in and talk with us. I’m sure people would rather listen to great sounding music in-stead of politics,” he jokes. All brands are top-of-the-line and all still have their new warranties.

“We will remember them” is a promise that the Foxhill commu-nity honoured last Sunday with their commemoration ceremony at the Rutherford Memorial Hall. The idea for the ceremony was conceived by chief organiser Hel-en Pullan after the Rutherford Hall received the memorial roll of hon-our from St Luke’s Church several years ago. Helen is involved in the Foxhill community with her husband as chairman of the hall. She is also in-volved with the school which was located on the same site. When the WWI memorial roll was moved from St Luke’s in 2006, Hel-en was involved in the dedication ceremony. However, Sunday’s service was a special way of remembering, in the context of the centennial, the ten men from Foxhill who went to WWI from 1914-18. Secretary-treasurer of the hall, Erica Short, says the ceremony was also important in remember-ing those who did survive and “of-ten lived a difficult peace through mental problems or injuries.”There were 75 people who turned out to remember the men includ-ing those participating in the cer-emony. Speeches were made including one by guest speaker, Lieutenant Colo-nel Rick Williams.

Candles were lit as the ten men’s names were read out and then The Last Post was followed by a minute’s silence. The Nelson region paid a high price for its part in the war, includ-ing the men from Foxhill who all died overseas. Some were involved in Gallipoli, others in battles such as Messines and some were killed by the influenza pandemic. RSA support advisor, Robin God-baz is the only relation of his great uncle and soldier, Walter Watson, still remaining in the area. Walter holds a place on the roll and died of influenza in England. He mar-ried a month before leaving for the war and after his death his wife never remarried or had children. “I come from here and I’m a vet-eran too so I can relate to it in a way and I’m the only relation that’s really left of his that’s in this area, and that’s why I’m here,” says Rob-in.The Rutherford Memorial Hall is also home to the community’s other treasured artefacts including the roll of honour from WWII and a small harmonium that is around 140 years old from St Luke’s church that was used during the ceremony.

We officially opened our high profile office at 238 Queen Street, Richmond last month and have been overwhelmed by the support and loyalty shown by the Tasman and Nelson community. I am proud to be part of a brand that is trusted both locally and throughout the country. A July 2014 independent survey showed that two-thirds of people surveyed thought Mike Pero Real Estate offered the best value for money in the area (Glasshouse Consulting Ltd). There is a traditional lift in property sales when spring kicks into gear with the milder weather encouraging people to list their home as more people venture out to open homes. There is also a desire for purchasers to move into their new home by the time Christmas rolls around which isn’t too far away either!I would love to hear from you if you or someone you know is thinking of selling! I’m often referred by clients to friends or family members to list their property. There’s a $100 gift voucher in it for you when I list the prop-erty and a further $100 when the property sells (special conditions apply). To contact Michelle in regards to buying or selling property, call her on 544 4634 or 021 760 068.

This is an election where everyone living in the Tasman electorate has a clear choice.

Under a John Key led Government NZ will remain respected, stable and pro-development.

You, like me, have a budget to run a home and family and know that if we can earn a bit more it can be used for those extra things we need.

Well Government is no different, and that’s why supporting a strong economy is the way to fund the extras needed for New Zealand.

A Green/Labour/Dotcom government is NOT an option for us.

It must be NO to regional water tax, NO to carbon taxes, NO to extra personal tax, NO to capital gains tax, NO to increased trust tax.

Tasman deserves an electorate MP in Government. Being around the table of the Government is the only way your views can be strongly represented. That’s what I will do when working for you and the electorate.

www.shuttersport.co.nzSPORTThe organisers of the inaugural Wily Weka rogaine held around Nelson on Saturday got it just right, with the course presenting a perfect challenge for all the teams. Two hundred and seventy com-petitors entered the teams’ event run by the Nelson Orienteering Club and one of the organisers, Brent Edwards, admits he was a little concerned that they hadn’t made the course challenging enough for the top competitors. But after a few 11th hour addi-tions, the organisers designed a perfect course that had the top teams covering about 50 kilome-tres in six hours and almost nail-ing all 65 check points. The course started at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson and ranged from the Botanics, Grampians, Tahunanui and Port Hills, to Walters Bluff. Trevor Voyce and Ash Whitehead won the men’s six-hour race with 2400 points, while Ingrid Rich-ter, Suzie Wood and Eloise Fry teamed-up to win the women’s section with 2300 points. Jacqui Keay, Brendan Carney and Mike Sheperd won the mixed section with 2240 points.“Trev and Ash only missed three or four check points and it sounds

like it could have been all on to get them all if they had planned their route a little better,” Brent says. “We weren’t sure if we had enough check points so we did end up putting some more out at the last minute - I don’t know if it was good luck or good management, but we got it just right.”Trevor agreed, saying “it was a great event and it makes you really appreciate where you live”. In the three-hour race, Alex and Di Grigg won the mixed section with 1010 points, Malcolm Ed-ridge, Nigel Kelly and Brad Wal-lace won the men’s with 1070 points and Tracey Perry and Mandy Medcalf-Stephens won the women’s section with 1110 points. Brent says the event went smooth-ly, although the start and finish for the two races were “mayhem”. “The start is like dropping a bag of marbles, the competitors scatter everywhere and then you don’t see them until the finish three or six hours later and then it’s mayhem again. But it went surprisingly well for a first-time event so we’ll look at running it again.”The Nelson Orienteering Club’s next event is this Sunday at Tahu-nanui, starting from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Keep 25 September free to come to a film festival run by the Waimea College 24-7 Youth Workers. The aim is to provide a chance for Waimea College students to showcase their creative talent in film making. The Film Festival is a student led and student focused evening, although it is run by the school’s youth workers. Students host the night, present their work and it even helps them meet NCEA course criteria.

The Forum, a men’s discussion group, is an opportunity for men to voice their opinion on a variety of subjects in a congenial home environment. Each month a subject is proposed but often the thrust of the conversation brings up new avenues, which are equally vigorously debated.

Past subjects discussed: Is royalty relevant today? Should an area of a country have the right to align itself with another country? (Ukraine). Is immigration beneficial to New Zealand? What would you do with $20 million dollars?

Perhaps you are dropping the children off at school. Richmond is a growing community and as we all move about quite lot, some of us no longer have mums, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, families to talk things over with. We all need friends and if what we can do is be a friend — fantastic.

Business Update. Adv.

The team at Rowan Dron Electrical are passion-ate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. They have com-pleted numerous solar installations throughout the region and their customers now enjoy dra-matically reduced power bills. With a PV Solar System, PV solar panels con-vert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This AC elec-tricity is used to power the household, while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the elec-tricity companies. Because they use light from the sun (and not heat) they will con-tinue to generate electricity even in light cloud. The cost of PV solar panels has fallen dramati-cally in the last few years while, at the same time, electricity costs just keep on rising. A typical 2kW system can now give you a 6.9% return on investment! That is more than your bank will pay and it means that your system will definitely pay for itself. The bigger the sys-tem, the bigger the return. The cost of installing a PV Solar System will vary depending on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation. An average family home will need a 2kW system which, fully-installed with panels and inverter,

costs around $8,000, excl gst. How long it takes for a system to pay for itself varies depending on the size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. While it is possible to sell electricity back to the grid, not all power companies will pay you for your excess electricity and the prices they offer can

vary. Rowan Dron Electrical can explain how to get the best price for your surplus generation. Their entire team are quali-fied solar installers, as well as being Certified Electri-cians with additional man-ufacturers training. They use the best quality gear, all manufactured in New Zea-land and Europe, and their

PV panels carry a 25 year production warranty, while your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years.Rowan Dron Electrical are happy to provide a no-obligation, free, onsite assessment. Once they are confident that a PV system will work for you, they will put together a free quota-tion based on the correct system for your site and your power needs. Because they are elec-tricians, they can advise you on ways you can maximise the savings from your system. Con-tact them for more information or to arrange your free household PV assessment.

Garin College A netball and Waimea Col-lege senior girls basketball teams were the star performers at secondary school sports tournaments played around the country last week. The Garin College netball team exceeded their own expectations, winning the B grade final at the South Island tournament played in Invercargill. Garin coach Sarah Rankin says the team was aiming for a top four finish and, once it achieved that goal, played superbly to beat Blue Mountain 34-27 in the semifinal and then defeat Waitaki Girls 41-37 in a tense final. "We were tied 31-all at the end of the third quarter so it was really close. We went ahead about sev-en minutes into the final quarter and then just defended everything."Sarah says the team of Makaila Pow-ick, Poppy Restieaux, Holly Webster, Jess Brooks, Keely Kira, Piki Boyles, Sarah Robinson, Olivia Nott, Rosette Hailes-Paku and Kate Hand, "played exception-ally well". Makaila and Poppy made the B grade tournament team.Waimea College also had a strong tourna-ment losing the A grade final to St Marga-ret's 26-45. Waimea trailed 2-18 at the end

of the first quarter but rallied in the last three quarters. Shaun Aindow, Hannah Davenhill and Breanna Whiting made the A grade tour-nament team. Waimea College also quali-fied for next month's national secondary schools' tournament in Palmerston North. The Waimea College senior girls basket-ball team beat Ashburton in the final to secure the South Island title in Nelson. The

Waimea senior boys team finished 10th while the junior girls lost the South Island final to St Hildas.Waimea hockey teams were also in action, with the senior boys losing the final of the Johnson Cup in Greymouth to Wait-aki Boys 1-2 and the senior girls finishing third in the Audrey Timlin Memorial Cup in Timaru. In Taupo, the senior girls soccer team fin-

ished 12th at nationals and the golf team finished 10th. The Waimea road cycling team raced in the Cuddon Tour in Marl-borough, with Bailey Ford and Daniel Reid starring with three wins and five placings in the under-15 boys races and Shaane Ful-ton winning the road race and criterium. Britney Kerr finishing second in both the time trial and criterium in the under-15 girls races.

Richmond topple Jacks in semi-finalWith the Saxton Stadium una-vailable on Saturday due to Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament, Nelson Netball played their semi-finals on Sun-day.All grades, excluding Premier 1, had 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 meeting in the semis, where there were some closely-contested games. The winners will meet in Sat-urday’s final. Premier 1 sees a major and minor semi format – the first and second battle it out for the direct route to the final, while the loser plays the win-ner of the third and fourth seed game. All four coaches were in agreement that any team, on any given day, could come away with the spoils. And that state-ment was no more evident than in the closeness of Sunday’s games.

While Stoke NBS had won two of their three encounters against Prices Pharmacy, they were by no means complacent going in the sudden death game. Prices had a 16-14 advantage at the first break and increased the margin to 30-27 at half time. Often, the ball the defence won was turned over before the ball could be converted. With neither team able to dominate, it was a case of sticking to the game plan and playing your own game. While the attempts were similar in the second half, it was Stoke NBS shooters, Megan Thom-son and Rebecca Dudley who were more accurate, although Prices goal shoot Shevaun Col-

lier returned commendable stats overall. Stoke NBS had an impressive final quarter 14-9 to take the game 52-48 and book a date with Jacks OPD on Thurs-day at 7pm.One could be forgiven for thinking that Richmond and Jacks were taking turns at win-ning – Jacks won the first and third rounds, while Richmond turned the tables in the second round and the all-important semi on Sunday. As expected, there was abso-lutely nothing in it as the teams could not be separated after fif-teen minutes. Jacks scored on the buzzer at half time to put their noses in front by 30-29. Richmond kept their compo-sure to score six of the last seven goals, to record the 60-56 win and book a spot in the final.
