Principal’s Message Dear Waiau Families and Friends, Welcome back to a new and exciting school year. I hope you had a great summer. We ended last year on a high note with our first Waiau Fun Day. I know the momentum of excitement and energy will carry us into this new school year. As a reminder, all of our teachers will be collecting the Waiau Summer Learning Packets that your children received at the end of last school year. We know that students learn best when concepts are practiced regularly and frequently. Thank you for supporting your child and Waiau as we push each and every student to reach their full academic potential. I have great news to share. Last year we applied for a 21 st Century grant and we got it. This grant will allow us to offer more learning and enrichment opportunities to our students. Some of the opportunities we will offer this year include after school tutoring, aquaponics, robotics, before school homework and study help, intersession tutoring, Jump Start to kindergarten and summer enrichment programs. We are very excited to build these programs so our students can fully benefit from them. Last year we partnered with ‘Ohana Komputer to teach technology integration classes to our students in grades 2, 3, and 4. We learned many things through implementing these classes. This year we will continue our partnership with ‘Ohana Komputer and we are adjusting the curriculum based on what we learned. We are very excited about the new curriculum and we know our students will benefit greatly from these classes. We have a change in our core math curriculum this year. We will be using the newest version of Go Math. This version is better aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). It also features an advanced technology integration platform that aligns to our school-wide emphasis on using technology in every classroom. This year we will be very close to having a computer for every student to use in the classroom. We do have a computer for every student in grades 2 through 6 and we are very close to that in grade 1. Our kindergarten students have access to classroom computers and the computer lab as well. I am looking forward to this year and I know it will be filled with engagement, learning, fun and excitement. EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Please complete and return the attached Emergency Health Card to your child’s teacher tomorrow. notify the office immediately of any changes. It is important that we continuously have current contact numbers so that we are able to reach you during the school day.

attached is a letter explaining Waiau’s Emergency Release procedure for students. Complete the Form and return immediately to your child’s teacher.

Automated Notification System

The SchoolConnects notification system calls parents whenever a child is marked absent (unexcused) from class. If you receive an automated call, please call the school office to let us know the reason for the absence. Report all daily, unexpected absences to the office before 8:30 am to avoid a call.

The automated system is also used to deliver other messages. This includes notification of low or zero meal account balances, school emergencies and school closures.

ILLNESS AND INJURY

If your child becomes ill or injured at school, you will be notified. Since schools are not equipped to care for sick or injured children, parents must come for the child when necessary. If the injury is serious and/or we are unable to contact the parent or any of the people listed on the emergency card, 911 will be called.

PEANUT FREE SCHOOL

For the health and safety of those with allergies, Waiau has adopted a “Peanut Free” policy. Please help us create a “peanut free” environment. Check ingredients in pre-packaged products and do not send any food item to school containing peanuts or peanut products. Mahalo for your cooperation as we strive to care for all of our children.

Telephone Use

The office telephones are available for student use on an emergency basis only. Your assistance in keeping our school phones and phone lines open for school business is greatly appreciated.

Cell Phones & Electronics Cell phones and other electronic devices are contraband. We understand that cell phones are important for emergencies and convenience, but they are a distraction to learning. Cell phones must be kept off and in a bag at all times while on campus. Cell phones that are used, ring/buzz, or are visible will be confiscated. Parents may pick-up the phone from the teacher or administrator. The school is not responsible for any electronic device that is lost, damaged or stolen.

If you need to contact your child during school due to an emergency, call the school office and we will get a message to your child.

On occasion, a student may use a cell phone to make a call after school hours. The child must first ask his/her teacher or an office staff member for permission. Staff may question your child and will direct him/her to a designated area to make the call. All cell phone calls must be completed at this designated area and the phone must be put back in a bag before leaving.

Campus Work

Waiau continues to improve through various construction and facility upgrade projects. Work during the school day will be minimal to avoid the impact on student instruction. However, the work in progress does affect our campus and we will all need to be cautious.

Our staff takes precautions to ensure the safety of all students and adults on campus. Please help us by reminding your children and others who come to our campus to stay on the sidewalks and keep away from the construction area. Be especially cautious using the entrance at the top of the campus for the first few weeks of school. Mahalo.

ADULTS ON CAMPUS

Parents are encouraged to volunteer. Please contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Geri Villegas, PCNC, in the office for more information. We ask that parents please do not hang around the classrooms after the school day has started or come more than a few minutes early at the end of the day. Anyone hanging out outside of classroom doors can be a distraction to student learning.

In order to provide a safe campus, ALL visitors and volunteers must report to the office during school hours. Parents dropping off items for a student should do so at the office. Items will be delivered or the student will be summoned when appropriate.

Unauthorized adults or non-Waiau students on campus will be directed to the office or asked to leave campus. Please report all suspicious or suspected incidents of strangers on campus, graffiti, threats, etc. to the office immediately.

LUNCH with milk.......... $ 2.50 MILK only...................... $ .60 Reduced lunch ............... $ .40 SECOND LUNCH …… $ 5.50

The school lunch program is subsidized by Federal and State governments. “USDA is an equal oppor-tunity provider & employer.” Meals meet the dietary requirements of growing children. We encourage all children to buy school lunch.

All students will go through the lunch line and select at least three items that they wish to eat. This allows students to be in control over their meals and helps avoid allergic reactions and waste.

A complete lunch offered by the DOE includes: 1. Meat/Meat Alternative 2. Fruit/Vegetable 3. Vegetable/Fruit 4. Grains and Bread 5. Milk

and possibly a dessert item

Students are encouraged to eat a balanced meal but it is up to the child to make those choices. Consider reviewing the lunch menu together so that your child knows what choices to make. If you know that your child will not eat at least 3 items on any given day, consider sending him/her with a healthy home lunch instead.

Children are not allowed to bring snacks or drinks into the cafeteria during lunch unless it is a part of a complete home lunch. Caffeinated and carbonated drinks are not allowed. NO PEANUT PRODUCTS.

OPTIONAL BREAKFAST PROGRAM

Breakfast is offered to students and staff only, 7:15-7:40am. Students will not be excused for any tardies to class due to eating breakfast. Breakfast must be consumed in the cafeteria. Parents may not purchase breakfast for siblings and other family members. The cafeteria is open only to students eating breakfast. Students should not loiter in the cafe. A  locked  dropbox  is  available  for  cash  or  check  payments  (payable  to  “DOE”)  in  a  LABELED  ENVELOPE.    Envelopes  (available  in  the  office)  must  have  the  following  information:        Legal/English  Name  of  Child:    _______________    Date  of  Deposit:    _____________      Gr./Rm.  No.    ________  Amount  Enclosed:    __________  Cash/Check  No.  _____

FREE/REDUCED MEAL BENEFITS

Applications must be submitted and approved yearly. Follow instructions and submit the form to the office or on-line at http://ezmealapp.com. Applications will be reviewed and submitted to the School Food Services Branch for determination. Applications may take several weeks to process. On-line response time is quicker. A notification letter will be sent home upon determination.

Students receiving meal benefits last school year will continue their status for up to 30 days or until a new status is determined. If you have a child new to the DOE or Waiau School who you believe is entitled to carry over benefits, please contact us immediately. If you received a meal benefit notification from another agency (DOH, DHS…), please submit a copy of your letter to the office.

Meal benefits help both families and the school by determining a school’s Title I status. In the past, we were able to provide tutoring and materials through Title I. This year, Waiau is not a Title I school. We highly encourage all families to submit an application through Waiau. Please call the office if you need assistance.

Dress Code

Children should wear clothing, footwear, hairstyles and jewelry/accessories appropriate for school. Short shorts/skirts, crop tops, halters, tube-tops, spaghetti straps, and cut up shirts and pants are NOT acceptable. Underwear should not be visible.

All literature materials are shared. Textbooks and other resources are

costly and the school invests a large amount to ensure adequate materials for our students. Let’s teach our children to treat books and all other school property with care.

All textbooks should be covered. Any damage should be reported immediately to the classroom teacher or to the librarian so that necessary repairs can be made.

Waiau complies with DOE rules and state law on collecting replacement costs for lost or damaged items. We will charge a student the original cost of any school materials that have been lost or damaged.

Bounced Check Fee

The Department of Education and Waiau Elementary will collect a $25.00 service charge for any dishonored check.

Parent-Community Network

Ms. Geri Villegas, our PCNC, builds relationships with our Waiau families through the coordination of volunteers and family projects. She serves as a liaison for both our PTA and School Community Council groups as well. Please stop by to share your ideas or volunteer to support our school. When you are available to volunteer, please follow these procedures: • Make prior arrangements with the PCNC or classroom teacher. • Sign in at the office before going to the room. • Wear the visitor tag while on campus.

We look forward to meeting you. A parent volunteer sign-up sheet and PTA membership forms will be sent home shortly.
