FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL ‘ICE BREAKER’ A special thank you to all of the members of the P & C Committee who organised a fantastic ‘Ice‐breaker’ night. Drinks and home made goodies were on the menu. We had a large turn out of new families of the school attend the night as well as many teachers. During the year there will be many more opportunities for parents to come together.   

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS On Tuesday, each family was emailed the school code and website 

www.schoolinterviews.com.au to book the Parent Teacher interviews in Week 9 (19 March to 23 March). This 10 minute or 15 minute time slot will give Parents and Teachers the opportunity to discuss your child’s Literacy, Numeracy and social development. Newly enrolled parents are asked to bring along a copy of last year’s report. Mrs Carlos, the Technology Teacher will be available after school from tomorrow to Tuesday and next Friday to assist parents. Bookings close Tuesday 13 March at noon. The Event Code is 4SA5F

LABELED CLOTHES AWARD AND CLASS UNIFORM AWARDS To attempt to reduce our lost property and to make the students more responsible for their belongings for the next  week the class SRC representatives will record whether their class is wearing perfect school uniform and whether jumpers and hats are labeled with the student’s name and 2012 class. Any class that wears perfect school uniform for the week is presented with a special certificate that is displayed in the classroom. Congratulations are extended to the following classes who earned uniform awards this week : KB, KWH, 1W, 2J, 2C, 3H, 3M, 3/4G, 5G and 5/6F.  SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS ‐ 8.50 – 9.15a.m.   NO CHILD IS ALLOWED ON THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND BEFORE SCHOOL.  Children in Kindergarten and Year 1 are supervised on the Infants Quad from 8:50 am – 9:15 am. Students in Years 2 and 3 are supervised on the Top Quad and students from Years 4, 5 and 6 are supervised on the Sports Field. From 8:50am the mulch area is not supervised and the children are reminded not to be in an area where there is no teacher. When children arrive at school after 8:50am they put their bags in the designated class area and move to the supervised play areas.   ‘THE YEAR OF READING’ 2012 PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN! The Premier’s Reading Challenge is run externally to the school to encourage students to read. The Challenge runs from Monday 5 March to 1 September 2012.  Last year, Wahroonga Public School had 100 students complete the challenge so we are hoping for many more entries this year. As indicated in the table below, the students are asked to read an amount of books either from the Challenge list or from their personal choice. Mrs Mills will assist students by labelling some of the books in the library that are on the Challenge list but parents will have to visit public libraries for the majority of the books. Mrs Carlos, the technology teacher will show the students the website during class over the next few weeks. Books read from 1 September 2011 can count towards the 2012 Challenge. It is a condition of entry that students entering and successfully completing the Challenge will receive a PRC certificate and appear on the PRC Honour Roll printed in the newspaper. (more information in page 5)  

 Please note: 

Independent K‐2 readers should attempt the 3‐4 Challenge. Students in Kindergarten‐Year 2 can experience PRC books in their home language. 

To experience a book a child can listen to the book, participate in a shared reading of the book or read part or all of the book independently. 

For students using PRC 5‐6 & 7‐9 booklists, the electronic PRC School Magazine anthologies can be read as up to two PRC books. 

For students using the PRC 5‐6 & 7‐9 booklists, collections of The Sun‐Herald newspaper articles can be chosen as up to two PRC books. 

Students who require special support may listen to unabridged audio versions of the books as they read along to them. 

All Student Reading Records are submitted online. Student Reading Records can be entered online from registration. Students can enter their books as they read them. 

 3‐6 SPORT Today the students in Years 3‐6 have received notes regarding the sport programs for term 2 and 3. These notes are also emailed to parents. Please discuss the sport options with your child. Application forms need to be returned to your class teacher by Friday 9  March 2012.

BUSH SCHOOL ACES ZONE TENNIS TRIALS! Congratulations to the four Year 5 and 6 Bush School Students who represented our school with pride and determination at the Hornsby PSSA Zone Tennis trials last Thursday.  Representing our school were James Gilmour, Jack Ireland, Laura Wunderlich and Oliver Welch.  There were some hard‐fought battles, but the Bush School team held their heads high and fought with honour! Congratulations to Jack, Laura and Oliver who have progressed to the next level, and will attend the Regional Trials for the selection of a Sydney North Team, at Parramatta on Tuesday 6th March.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE  World Education Games Next week is the World Education Games. Competition kicks off on Wednesday 6th March with World Spelling Day. Students from all over the world can compete to spell words quickly by playing Live Spellodrome. Wednesday 7th March is World Maths Day where students compete on live Mathletics. Thursday 8th March is the inaugural World Science Day. Classes will be using all 3 ICT rooms on the day to com‐pete. They can also compete in the mornings and afternoon from home by going to www.worldeducationgames.com    Reading Eggs  Year 1 and 2 have begun using the website readingeggs.com over the last few weeks and Kindergarten will start using it very soon. It is a self‐directed website which allows students to practise their reading at their own level. They complete a number of different types of lessons focussed around sounds or words. Students are really enjoying using the website and earning golden eggs to spend on new clothes for their avatar and new furniture for their house in the online world.

At Wahroonga we are once again participating in the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge.  The challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure and to enable students to ex‐perience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.   

The Challenge starts on the 5th March and students can record any books they have read since 1st September 2011. The challenge will run until the 1st September 2012.  

Starting the Challenge Go to the Student Portal Website http://student.det.nsw.edu.au 

Login using the student’s username and password. The user‐

name is in the form firstname.lastname and may include a num‐

ber. 

 

 

 

When you have logged into the Kidspace Portal click on the link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  

The student will be logged in as themselves. 

 Booklists – click on this link in order to download the lists for the Challenge. Stu‐dents in years 3‐6 need to read 20 books to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge, at least 15 books from the list and up to 5 of their own choice. Students in K‐2 need to read 30 books, at least 25 books from the booklist and 5 personal choice books. The Booklists include each book’s I.D. num‐

ber. This is the number you need to enter on 

the Student Reading Record. 

 

Student Reading Records‐ click on this link to enter your books.  For books from the Reading List enter the book I.D. number and click “add”. The name and author of the book will appear in the boxes. If the book is one of the 5 personal choice books click on the Add a Choice Book tab. You can search for the book by title, author or the ISBN of the book. Click “add” to include this book in your reading record. Once a book is added to your Reading Record it will appear there next time you login as you complete the Challenge. Online Help‐ click this link to download guides which step you through the process in more detail. Finishing the Reading Challenge Once you have read and recorded 20 or 30 books from your Challenge level they will be checked and validated by Mrs Mills. Validation of the completed entries will be done once a week. Names of students who have completed the Challenge will be published in the next Bush Telegraph after the validation.

WPS Writing Wall

P & C NEWS  It was great to see so many parents and teachers at the Icebreaker last Thursday night.  We hope you all enjoyed the evening. Thank you to all of the P&C committee for your organisation and for the great food – no leftovers this year!  Davinia Inkson and I are looking forward to meeting the Class Coordinators tomorrow at 9.20am in the Staff room.  Hope you can make it.  Thanks to those who have emailed wanting to get involved in our fundraising efforts.  We are looking at holding a Trivia Night some time in June and we will need lots of parent help in addition to the P&C committee.  So if you are a good organizer, or want to get more involved, please email the P&C.  Our next P&C meeting is next Thursday.  All are welcome so come along and pay your membership fee of $0.50c if you would like to vote at the following meeting.  DIARY DATES: Thursday 8 March                  P & C Meeting,     7pm Staff Room Friday 4 May            School Disco

 2C were imagining that they were the dinosaur in Jeannie Baker’s book “Where the Forest Meets the Sea”  It was a rainy day when I walked in the mud in the rainforest. I saw a fantastic rainbow bird. Its colours were blue, green, yellow, purple and gold. I felt something crawl on my back. It was a red and green caterpillar and it was cute. I heard a creaking sound. It was a brown branch with lovely green leaves. I wondered. Will the forest still be here next time I come?  

Matthew de Meyrick,2C  I live in the misty hills. It is very rocky and steep. There are dangerous volcanoes and lava lakes flowing down the hills. I like flying around the hills. On a rainy day I skydived into a delicious rainforest. I saw a gigantic baby phoenix. I felt happy because it snuggled up to me. I heard a weird noise and I wondered what it was. It was the baby’s mother and she was heading towards me.

BAND NEWS RECORDER  Recorder tutorials started this week.  The class on Thursday at 8:40 is particularly large.  If anyone is able to swap to either a Monday or a Wednesday would you let Lesa know please: lc_blue@hotmail.com  BAND WORKSHOP: Saturday 17 March 2:30 – 5:30pm (from 2:00 pm for Concert Band) Workshop notes were emailed this week, if you did not receive one, please email Anne Seage (see below). The workshop is for all bands.  The afternoon will consist of small group tutorials with a team of specialized tutors and full band rehearsals with conductors.  At the end a brief concert will demonstrate the afternoon’s progress.  The children’s improvement over the afternoon is always remarkable.  Please return the forms indicating attendance as soon as possible.   FEES In line with the School policy of electronic communication, invoices were emailed last week.  If you have not re‐ceived one, please email Anne Seage (see below).  DIARY DATES: Band Committee Meeting: Monday 12 March at 8:00 pm in the band room.  All welcome. Band Workshop for all bands:  Saturday 17 March 2:00 – 5:30 pm.  Band Camp:  24‐25 May. Ryde East Eisteddfod:  Sunday 27 May.
