Introduction

Welcome to the 2017 Wagon Wheel OHV Rendezvous! We are excited to share our trails with you, and know you won’t be disappointed. While you are here, enjoy all that Meeker has to offer...we have a busy schedule of events, but hopefully you will make time to check out our beautiful downtown, parks, and other rec-reational activities like mountain biking or hiking on the Phillip & Dorcus Jensen Memorial Park.

Want to visit Meeker again? Meeker is a great place to be all year long! During the summer months join us as we host OHV events, music and art festivals, and the long standing Range Call Celebration over the 4th of July weekend. Fishing, biking and hiking are all favorite activities of visitors and locals alike. Fall brings us to the ever popular hunting season and the annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials in September - a world renowned five day sheepdog herding competition that test dogs and their handlers with some of the toughest sheep and courses many handlers encounter. The Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byways is one of the best places to take in the changing fall colors, experiencing this beauty by OHV makes it all the better! The activities don’t stop there - visit

Meeker during the winter months for some of the best snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing around! Meeker features a vast array of groomed and ungroomed snowmobile trails with options for all skill levels. Year round-activities await for you in Meeker!

Featured EventsEvent Kick-off & Happy HourMeet and greet your guides, fellow riders and event coordinators at the Meeker Golf Course Thursday night from 4-6pm. Familiarize yourself with the trails, the event activities and all that Meeker has to offer. The Golf course offers great views of Meeker and the White River Valley from their relaxing deck.

After Ride Happy HourRelax with friends after the Friday ride at Chippers Buffalo Hall. This upbeat venue will have live music, cool drinks, and appetizers from 4-7pm. Afterwards explore our town and enjoy dinner at one of Meeker’s delicious restaurants.

OHV EXPOVendor booths will be set up downtown on Main Street during the event showcas-ing vehicles, accessories and information for riders.

Meeker DaysThis all-day event on Saturday is fun for everyone. Sponsored by the ERBM Recreation & Park District, Pioneers Hospital and the Chamber of Commerce, this event in the downtown plaza on Main Street will feature races, games, prizes,

and food, with a beer garden and music from 3-9pm. Saturday morning is the Meekers Farmers Market, with a variety of vendors with food, baked goods, and artisan crafts. Stop by Meeker Days after your ride for food, music and fun with our Meeker community. The Rendezvous prize drawings will be announced during this event!

OHV Poker RunParticipate in the annual OHV Poker Run sponsored by Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue. Enjoy this Saturday ride for an additional registration donation of $25. The public is welcome to drop in! See page 21 for details.

Meeker, Rangely, and Rio Blanco County are proud to be OHV-Friendly communities. Please be a responsible rider.

GENERAL• Operators must obey all speed limits, exercise safe driving practices, and are subject to the Model Traffic Code regulations and applicable laws of the State of Colorado.

INSURANCE & LICENSES• Within Rio Blanco County, OHV operators are required to maintain at least the minimum liability insurance coverage of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per acci-dent, and $15,000 property damage.• Within Meeker Town limits operators must be in possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license or valid drivers license from another state. With Rangely Town limits any person operating an OHV must be at least 11 year of age or be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age or older. Within the County, riders 16 years or older must have a valid driver’s license and riders over the age of 10 must be operating under the supervision of a person with a valid driver’s license. Riders under the age of 10 shall not operate an OHV.

SPEED• Within Meeker Town limits, the OHV maximum speed limit is 25 miles per hour unless a sign designates a lesser speed limit.• Within Rangely Town limits, the OHV maximum speed limit is 10 miles per hour.• On designated County roads, OHV riders must not exceed speeds of 35 miles per hour, or the posted speed limit, whichever is less.

ROADS • Within Meeker’s Town limits, OHV’s are allowed on all roads and on all alleys, except for State Highway 13 (Market Street). Riders crossing State Highway 31 (Market Street) shall do so at an angle of approximately ninety (90) degrees to the direction of the highway, and at a place where no obstruction prevents a quick and safe crossing. Within Rangely Town limits all Town streets, roads and alleys, except any street or road which is part of the State Highway system are designated as off-highway routes.

SAFETY• With Meeker Town Limits, no person shall operate an OHV while carrying another person or riding in any position that may interfere with the operation or control of the OHV or the view of the operator.• All of-highway vehicles must be equipped with and have in use: • At least one headlamp • At least one red tail lamp • Functioning braking system • Spark arrester • Muffler • Current Colorado Parks and Wildlife registration decal which can be obtained at www.parks.state.co.us• Within Rangely Town limits, OHV operators must take the most direct route as possible to a BLM area, educational activity, or employment. Educational activates or work activities must be approved by the Chief of Police and any questions will be verified.• Within Rangely Town limits, no OHV shall be operated between the hours of sunset and sunrise.

Frequently Asked QuestionsFirst Time Riding Meeker? Welcome! We hope you enjoy our trails as much as we do! Meeker is proud to be an “OHV friendly community” and we welcome you to ride your OHV on town streets and designated County Roads. The Wagon Wheel OHV Trail System is over 250 miles of interconnecting loops and trails located on the USFS White River National Forest. Riders can experience all levels of difficulty, terrain, and scenery. Meeker is one of the premier places for your next OHV and motorcycle adventure!

What are the rules for riding an OHV on Town Streets and County Roads? See page 7 for current rules and regulations.

Are helmets required? Riders are not required to wear helmets and other safety gear, but it is highly encouraged. We want everyone to have a fun, safe ride! Safety flags on each OHV are recommended for visibility. What OHVs are allowed? We welcome all OHVs! The Wagon Wheel Trail System is designed for usage with 4-wheelers, side-by-sides, motorcycles, and even some full sized vehicles. For a complete map showing which trails are open to which types of vehicle, check out the newest Motor Vehicle Map provided by USFS. A copy of this map is included in your registration packet.

Do I have to go on a guided ride, or can I go exploring on my own? Riders are more than welcome to ride the trails by themselves if they desire. Guided rides are provided to orient those unfamiliar with the trails and all that the Wagon Wheel Trail System has to offer. Signup is limited to ten OHVs per guided group. Each ride may have multiple groups.

What should I take on my ride? Be sure to bring plenty of gas, rain gear, warm clothing, bug repellent, sun screen, lunch, plenty to drink, plus other important personal items you may need. You won’t want to forget a camera - you will encounter many beautiful sights you will want some pictures to remind you of your trip!

Am I required to have a Colorado OHV Registration Sticker? Yes. All riders will need to have a current OHV registration sticker. Riders not from Colorado, can purchase their registration at Wyatt’s Sports Center (223 8th Street) or Samuelson’s True Value (43900 HWY 13) for $25.25 and it will have an expiration date of March 31, 2017. Both Colorado residents and nonresidents can purchase a registration at the local Colorado Parks and Wildlife Office (73485 HWY 64).

Is lunch provided? Lunch is not provided on the guided rides, but there will be an opportunity to purchase a sack lunch for Friday and Saturday rides. Lunch sign up sheets are available at the registration table located at the event Base Camp.

Where is the Rendezvous Base Camp? Base Camp is located at the Hugus Building on the corner of 6th Street & Main Street.

Is it too late for me to sign up for guided rides? No. You can sign up for rides on the day of the guided ride, but keep in mind that space is limited and only ten spots are available for each guided ride.

Where can I get trail maps and info? Information is available at the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, 710 Market Street, (970) 878-5510.

Trail Descriptions#1 Miller Creek Loop

(Baseball Field Perimeter)

Riders are sure to enjoy this 33 mile loop starting and finishing at the Miller Creek Parking Lot. This trail winds alongside Miller Creek, gains elevation, and tops out with long distance views, and frequent wildlife viewing opportunities. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width.

THE RIDE: This ride includes some challenging short sections (somewhat rocky, steep 0.5 mile downhill section). Riders should have experience on trails with steeper, rocky, off-camber and narrow sections. Riders can either trailer to the Miller Creek Parking Lot, or ride from Base Camp by traveling on the Connector Trail to County Road 8. Riders will experience 12 paved miles, before turning right onto County Road 57, and traveling for 1 mile before reaching the Miller Creek Parking Lot. If riding to the Miller Creek Parking Lot, leave 30 minutes early. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

ROUTE: CR57, FS215, FS214, FS2211, FS211, FS216, FS2216, FS217, FS2200, FS218, FS215, CR57

#3 Fawn Creek to Deadhorse Loop (Road & Bridge Shop)

If photo opportunities are what you are looking for, this is your ride! This ride features one of the most impressive scenic overlooks of the White River National Forest and the North Fork of the White River. Riders will experience a 32 mile ride that includes 6 miles of gravel road and 4 miles of paved road. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width. THE RIDE: The trail includes areas of steep to very steep, rocky off-camber and/or narrow trail, with several small stream crossings for experienced riders. The majority of this ride will be on Forest Service 4x4 roads, with some pavement riding to return to the parking lot. Riders must trailer their OHV 26.5 miles up County Road 8 to the Fawn Creek/County Shop parking area. MUST TRAILER

ROUTE: CR8, CR115, FS280, FS290, FS293, FS1809.2, FS231, FS230, CR8

#2 Lake Avery to Fawn Creek (Fairgrounds Grandstands)

This 21 mile loop ride is a great way to see the beautiful White River National Forest! Riders will start and finish at the Lake Avery Parking Lot, this is a great beginner ride. Expect terrific scenery, dense forests, stream crossings and stunning views of Lake Avery. THE RIDE: This ride is on well-traveled Forest Service 4x4 dirt roads with some rocky surfaces, shallow ruts, steep sections, and small stream crossings. Riders can either trailer to the Lake Avery Parking Lot, or ride their OHV from Base Camp. Riders should travel via the Connector Trail to County Road 8, to County Road 115 with 21 miles of paved road. If riding to parking lot, leave 45 minutes early. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

ROUTE: CR115, FS250, FS280, CR115, CR8, CR115, to complete the loop there will be 7 miles of paved road riding to return to the parking lot.

Trail Difficulty Level“Green” ATV/OHV Trail (beginner): A graveled or surfaced road with good sight distance.

“Blue” ATV/OHV Trail (intermediate): A two track road or trail with natural surface, moderate turns with limited sight distance, moderate steep sections with drop-offs, ruts, dust and frequent changes in the riding surface.“Black” ATV/OHV Trail (expert): A trail or primative two track road including steep, rough, and narrow segments, often with switchbacks.

Trail conditions can change rapidly during and immediately after spring runoff and heavy thunderstorms. It is unlaw-ful to gain access to public land by trespassing on private property. Never assume access, always seek permission.Note: The ratings for these trails are based on subjective comparison of trails within this system only. Newcomers are encouraged to begin their riding experience on the Wagon Wheel OHV Trail System with a “beginner” trail. This will es-tablish a base for moving onto an “intermediate” or “expert” trail segment. Riders assume all risk associated with skill level, trail difficulty and conditions. The Town of Meeker, Rio Blanco County, and the Wagon Wheel OHV Club are not responsible for the accuracy of trail designations and classifications.

#9 Yellow Jacket to Sleep Cat (Town Park)

Enjoy a 45 mile loop from the Yellow Jacket Pass Parking Lot, traveling past Sleepy Cat Peak, circling through beautiful open areas and winding through the pine trees. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width.THE RIDE: This ride has short sections of challenging steep, very rocky, rutted, off-camber and/or narrow trails. Riders must be experienced with these trail conditions and have OHVs with good clearance. This will be a fast paced ride with few stops. Riders can trailer to the Yellow Jacket Pass Parking Lot at the junction of County Road 15 and County Road 48. Riders choosing to ride their OHV 17 miles to the Yellow Jacket Parking Lot will experience 9 miles of pavement. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

#8 Hay Flats To Miller Creek (Baseball Field Perimeter)

A local favorite, riders will enjoy this 60 mile loop which features switchback roads climbing in elevation to open areas that wildlife and livestock utilize for summer feeding grounds. Wildflowers are in abundance, and riders will cross Miller Creek before returning to Meeker. Ride from and return to Base Camp on this loop ride, which travels 23 miles of paved road. THE RIDE: This ride includes several rocky sections, off-camber, rutted areas and small stream crossings. Approximately half of this ride will be on well-maintained gravel and paved roads with the remainder of travel on Forest Service 4x4 dirt roads. Riders should have some experience on dirt roads with rocky, uneven surfaces. NO TRAILERING

#7 Yellow Jacket Historic Ride (Meeker Elementary School)

Meeker has some of the most interesting historical stories! This ride will provide several opportunities to learn more about this area and the rich history. Riders will enjoy a 40 mile loop which will pass through the historic Uranium Peak Mining District, and the group will visit the Milk Creek Battlefield Park. Brochures will be provided to learn about the 1879 Battle at Milk Creek, which is said to be the last Indian Uprising before the Ute Indian removal in Colorado. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width.THE RIDE: This ride offers sections of more difficult trail, having exposed rock, off-camber surface, and rutted trail. Riders must be experienced and have an OHV with good ground clearance. Riders will start and finish at the Yellow Jacket Pass Parking Lot, at the junction of County Road 15 and County Road 48. If riding to the parking lot, leave 30 minutes early. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

#5 Pagoda Peak Loop (Meeker Elementary School)

ATV riders will rejoice with this trail! If you are looking to experience the feeling of being “on top of the world,” travel this 20 mile loop. Riders will trailer 45 miles to the Ripple Creek Trailhead, but will experience the beauty of Ripple Creek Pass along the Flat Tops Scenic Byway. OHVs must be 50 inches or less in overall width. THE RIDE: This ride includes areas of steep, very rocky, off-camber and narrow trail, with small stream crossings. Stay the trail in wet meadow areas, so as not to widen the existing trail. This is a great ride for experienced riders. The majority of ride will be on Forest Service 4x4 roads, with some pavement riding to return to the parking lot. Riders must trailer their OHV 45 miles up County Road 8 to the Ripple Creek Trailhead parking area. MUST TRAILER

#4 Fawn Creek Loop (Town Park)

If you are looking for a shorter day ride, that provides technical challenges, you will enjoy this ride. Riders will experience a 16 mile ride, originating from the Fawn Creek Parking Lot, looping through beautiful wildflower filled openings. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width.THE RIDE: This ride includes areas of steep to very steep, rocky off-camber and/or narrow trail, with several small stream crossings. Experienced riders only. The majority of ride will be on Forest Service 4x4 roads, with some pavement riding to return to the parking lot. Riders must trailer their OHV 26.5 miles up County Road 8 to the Fawn Creek/County Shop parking area. MUST TRAILER

#6 Flat Tops Scenic Adventure (Meeker High School)

You say you want a day-long adventure? You say you want to see some of the most amazing scenic overlooks? You say you want extreme technical challenges? Well, this ride is not for the faint of heart…but this trip to Blair Mountain and beyond is simply amazing! This is a 50 mile ride from Hiner Springs, which provides a long, full day ride, but with grand vistas, lakes and wildflowers, you won’t be disappointed. Length may be adjusted based on groupTHE RIDE: This ride includes numerous steep, rutted, off-camber and very rocky sections. Several small streams will be forded. Very experienced riders only. Riders must trailer their OHV to Hiner Springs, which is 35 miles from Meeker. Traveling to this parking area takes up to 1.5 hours, but is well worth the time! The parking area is accessed by traveling County Road 8 for 20 miles, turning right onto County Road 10 for 1.5 miles, turning right onto County Road 17/Forest Service Road 245 for 13 miles, and finally turning left onto County Road 125/Forest Service 601 for 0.5 miles. MUST TRAILER

#11 Sleepy Cat Peak (Fairgrounds Grandstand)

Sleepy Cat Peak is one of Meeker’s most recognizable landmarks, and riders will see firsthand why it is named Sleepy Cat Peak. Riders will enjoy this 32 mile loop ride that begins at beautiful Lake Avery, winds around to the base of Sleepy Cat Peak, and circles back to Lake Avery. THE RIDE: This ride offers short sections of steep, rutted, off-camber and/or very rocky conditions, with several small stream crossing. The majority of ride will be on Forest Service 4x4 roads. Experienced riders only, and OHVs must have good ground clearance. Riders can either trailer to the Lake Avery Parking Lot, or ride their OHV from Base Camp. Riders should travel via the Connector Trail to County Road 8, to County Road 115 with 21 miles of paved road. If riding to parking lot, leave 45 minutes early. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

#10 Miller Creek to Elk Creek Loop (Road & Bridge Shop)

More experienced riders will truly enjoy this 32 mile loop which travels along Miller Creek and drops into the beautiful Elk Creek valley. Featuring a beautiful view of the “Up River” area, riders will easily find an area of solitude. OHVs must be 62 inches or less in overall width.THE RIDE: This ride will encounter several steep uphill rocky climbs as well as a long, steep and rocky descent with sections having rutted and off-camber surfaces. Experienced riders only. Riders can either trailer to the Miller Creek Parking Lot, or ride from Base Camp by traveling on the Connector Trail to County Road 8. Riders will experience 12 paved miles, before turning right onto County Road 57, and traveling for 1 mile before reaching the Miller Creek Parking Lot. TRAILERING OPTIONAL

#13 Dusk To Dark - EVENING & DINNER RIDE (Base Camp)

This Thursday evening ride is a great way to kick off the Rendezvous! Following the riders meeting, ride up Hay Flats to Howie Reservoir. Plan to depart from Golf Course at 5:00 and 5:30 pm. Working headlights are required. S’mores will be provided, bring your own hot dogs & brats. Limit 2 groups of 12.THE RIDE: This ride includes several rocky sections, off-camber, rutted areas and small stream crossings. Approximately half of this ride will be on well-maintained gravel and paved roads with the remainder of travel on Forest Service 4x4 dirt roads. Riders should have some experience on dirt roads with rocky, uneven surfaces. NO TRAILERING

#12 POKER RUN (Base Camp)

Join the 5th Annual Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue OHV Poker Run for a fun-filled ride! Participation in the Poker Run is not included in your event registration, but for $25 you will have the chance to win cash prizes. Riders will enjoy this 60 mile loop which features roads climbing in elevation and traveling through fields of wildflowers and forest. Ride from and return to Justice Center, which travels 30 miles of paved road. (See page 21 for more details)THE RIDE: This ride includes several rocky sections, off-camber, rutted areas and small stream crossings. This ride will be on paved roads and well-traveled Forest Service dirt roads. Riders should have some experience on dirt roads with rocky, uneven surfaces. NO TRAILERING

#14 Meeker History & Town Ride (Base Camp)

This Saturday ride will be relaxing and educational. Visit several historic rural school houses and enjoy beautiful overlooks of the White River Valley. The majority of this ride will be on paved County Roads with a small section on graveled County Roads. No OHV width restriction. THE RIDE: This ride will depart from Base Camp at 9:30am and travel to several rural school houses and historic sites where members of the local Historical Society will provide stories and educational materials about each site, before returning to town for lunch at the Meeker Cafe (not included in event registration). Following lunch there will be an optional walking tour of the Historic Downtown District. NO TRAILERING
