Second Sunday of Advent
JESUS IS KINDNESS AND TRUTH
"Kindness and truth aren't usually considered compatible: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Commonplace wisdom suggests that one of the two will have to be sacrificed. Hence, my mother was trained never to open a gift in the presence of the giver, lest her possible disappointment be revealed. Common sense says something similar of justice and peace: to get the one, the other is going to have to take a back seat. A Savior who can combine both will have his hands full!
Jesus reveals a truth that frees us and heals us, proving that nothing based on deceit is any sort of kindness at all. The same is true of peace: if it is based on injustice, it is a bogus peace at best.
We are tempted, on the one hand, to settle for gentle appearances and, on the other, for ends that will justify the means. Jesus comes into our lives with no concessions, no temporary half-measures, no compromises.
Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly!
KNIGHTS NEWS
Keep Christ in Christmas! Let our celebration of Christ's birth reflect our trust and hope in Jesus.
"Christmas Basket Day" is only one week away and we need all your food donations and wrapped gifts brought to either church no later that 9:00 AM, Friday, December 12.
Opportunities for all parishioners to help the Knights with the Christmas Baskets will be this Sunday, December 7, this coming Friday, December 12, and next Sunday, December 14. Please choose as many of the following options as you wish.
Sunday, December 7: Put away tables and chairs, then set up the hall after the11:00 AM Mass.
Friday, December 12: 9:00 AM: Knights with pickups and vans meet at the St. Peter parking lot, and then pick up groceries and gifts from donating churches, the grocery store, and generous benefactors. No truck? Not a Knight? No problem! We need an additional 6 people to help unload vehicles. 10:00 AM: We need many volunteers throughout the morning and afternoon to organize and wrap gifts. Feel free to pick your most convenient time. 7:00 PM: Unpack and sort groceries.
Sunday, December 14: Noon: Lunch and then load delivery vehicles starting with Deerfield first. We need many parishioners with pickups or full sized vans to deliver a group of food and gift boxes. Please line up your vehicles at the South end of the Church Hall. Many volunteers are needed to work in the hall or to load vehicles. Pick your job and have fun! Mid afternoon: We would like to organize a separate cleanup crew to restore the hall to its former glory. Any questions? Please call Rudy at 517 486-4148 for details. God Bless Everybody!
Our Holy Father's Evangelization intention: That parents may be the true evangelizers, passing on to the their children the precious gift of faith.
LET’S TALK LITURGYby Margaret O’Malley
I hope you all had a pleasant Thanksgiving Holiday. I spent time with my sister and her family. During the after dinner sitting around the table time the conversation somehow shifted to the Pope and Papal Infallibility and then to the Immaculate Conception! It wasn’t a long conversation but I thought I would share some thoughts.
Many people – including Catholics – think that the Immaculate Conception has to do with the conception of Jesus. You hear people say things today and use the term immaculate conception implying that a woman became pregnant without having relations with a man. That is not at all what the Immaculate Conception is about.
The feast refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary herself being without sin. Though Mary deserved original sin like all other humans she was preserved from it at the moment of her conception – she was pre-redeemed. This feast is also about Mary’s fullness of grace. Mary is the anticipated image of the Church without spot or wrinkle (Eph 5:27).
The feast was added to the Universal Church calendar in the 14th century and made a feast of obligation in 1708. In 1854 Pope Pius IX defined this as a dogma of faith – one of the few times a Pope has spoken infallibly. We will leave that for another time.
Mary is the patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Conception. Because of that, December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation no matter what day of the week it falls on – even when others are dispensed if they are on Saturday or Monday.
This Monday, December 8th is the Feast and a Holy Day of Obligation. Happy Feast Day!
GIVING TREE & GROCERY BAGS
Please remember to bring your wrapped gift with the tag from the Giving Tree attached to church or the parish office by Friday,
D e c e m b e r 1 2 a t 9:00am.
Grocery bags for the Christmas baskets are also needed by this time. The Knights of Columbus appreciate your kindness!
QUOTE FOR THE WEEK-
