Darling River Run 2014

Destination: Bourke via the Darling River to the Little Desert, Victoria Trip Leader: Jeff and Helen Brill Phone: 02 69331384 Date: 29 September 2014. to about the 24 October 2014. Departure Time? 0900 Departure point? Vehicle numbers: Maximum: 10 Minimum: 2 We have now decided a departure date and time. It could be planned for those who want to do the whole trip, part thereof or come and go as you please. What I had in mind was we would head to Bourke via Griffith and Hilston and then follow the Darling River to Wentworth. From here we will go to the Sunset country, Big Desert, Little Desert and then home. I expect a fair bit of bush camping plus a bit of Caravan parks to freshen up, resupply and washing etc. and at least one Station Stay. There would be plenty of 2/3 day stops depending how nice a camp site is and what there is to see and of course how big a hurry you are in. At no time are we more than an easy two days drive from Wagga Wagga. Help with the planning if going or not would be appreciated. NB Fresh fruit and vegetables cannot be carried to Griffith. Trip grading: If wet – 5 (The roads will be closed) If dry – 2 Suited to camper trailer? Yes as long as you don’t need a power point (unless you have a very long lead) and don’t mind dirt roads. Activity: Easter Trip: Murray-Sunset National Park

Leader: John Kent Ph: 0419691218 Email: [email protected]

Date: April: 18, 19, 20, 21 Start / Departure time: 8 am

Meeting point: Moorong St roundabout. Adjacent to Hutcheon and Pearce (John Deere)

Vehicle / participant numbers: Maximum: 10 Minimum: 2

Activity description:

PLAN A: Explore Hattah Kulkyne and Murray-Sunset National Parks. Friday: Travel Wagga, Hay, Robinvale (refuel). Camp at Hattah Kulkyne NP (distance approx. 550 km 6 hrs drive). Saturday: Explore HKNP, Nowingi, M-SNP, Rocket Lake. Camp at Mt Crozier or Mopoke Hut. Sunday: Loop west through M-SNP. Camp at Pink Lakes. Monday: Travel home via Underbool (refuel?), Walpeup (refuel?), Mallee H’way, Kyalite, Moulamein, Conago, Jerilderie, Urana, Lockhart (distance approx. 600 km).

Suggestions for variations to Plan A are welcome (e.g. base camp? Visit Wyperfeld NP?).

Expect 2 days of driving on remote sandy tracks including sand dunes. Camp sites have toilets but no showers. There will be a number of stops of historical interest e.g. Mopoke Hut, abandoned salt harvesting at Pink Lakes etc. I hope there will be opportunity for some walks.

M-S NP is VICs second largest NP and contains 4 designated wilderness zones. It is isolated and has quite a bit of wildlife. It is one of the few remaining semi-arid regions in the world where the environment is relatively untouched and is home to VICs largest flower, the Murray Lily and Aust’s rarest bird, the Black Eared Miner. It has diverse habitats (salt lakes, dunes, grasslands, mallee, cyprus pine, saltbush, belah etc). Salt was commercially harvested from 1916 – 1975 at Pink Lakes.

Weather may be warm, cool (late April), dry or wet.

Level of difficulty of activity: Easy? Moderate? Hard? Very hard? Moderate to Hard depending on weather and sand conditions.

Trip Grading: If wet: 3 - 4 If dry: 3 - 4 Suited to camper trailer? Yes

Number of nights camping? 3 Location: Hattah Lakes, Mopoke Hut or Mt Crozier, Pink Lakes

Full time driving? Yes Fuel required: Lots. Consider carrying extra.

Personal gear required:

Camping. Capable 4WD (low range). UHF radio. Air compressor. Food. Water for 3 nights camp. Recovery gear (mainly snatch strap and shovel). Walking shoes. Choccie biccies for the trip leader. Bring entertainment for the camps.

Club gear required:

First aid kit.

Other comments or safety issues:

DO NOT carry fresh fruit due to quarantine restrictions (fruit fly).

This is fairly remote country. Do not expect phone coverage (I will have a sat phone). Wet weather could make tracks difficult.

High standards of etiquette and hygiene are expected.

NOTES:
