WaG #5 – Subject & Predicate
What are the main parts of a sentence?
Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the subjects of sentences. What writing/grammar rules or definitions can you identify?
Simple Subject
1a – The blue backpack is on sale.
1b – The boy in the red shoes is lost.
Subject
simple subject noun(s)/pronoun that the sentence is about answer the questions Who? or What?
Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the predicates of sentences. What writing/grammar rules or definitions can you identify?
Simple Verb (Predicate)
2a – The detective searched everywhere.
2b – The detective will interview more witnesses.
Verb (Predicate)
simple verb (predicate) the verb (action) itself could be a phrase
Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about the subjects and verbs of sentences. What writing/grammar rules or definitions can you identify?
Match the Subject and Verb
3a – Juan collects baseball hats.
3b – The students are playing basketball at lunch.
3c – Spring and summer are my favorite seasons.
3d – Each boy and girl receives a prize.
Match the Subject and Verb
singular subject singular verb
plural subject plural verb
two singular subjects joined by “and” plural verb UNLESS subject starts with “each” or “every”
singular verb UNLESS the two singular subjects are
considered one thing singular verb
Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook. Underline the simple subject once and underline the simple predicate twice.
Macaroni and cheese is on the new menu.
The shortest kid on the team is the fastest.
The book of riddles amuses me.
Everyone earns a SOAR ticket for going above and beyond.
Lunchtime and SSR are my favorite parts of the day.
Check your work! Did you underline JUST the simple subject?Did you double underline JUST the simple predicate?
