L I V E AUCT IONLA-1Artist: Henry Rodman KenyonTitle: On the Mill Pond, 1910Media: Oil on boardUnframed Size: 10 ½” x 13 ¾”Framed Size: 16” x 20”Henry Rodman Kenyon generally painted small, subtle sketches, which, despite their size, are strong and hold their own alongside larger contemporary works. His paintings suggest a man greatly in tune with nature; his brushstrokes are painterly and free, express-ing life and vitality and reflect well his vision of the world. His style has been best describedas a mixture of the Barbizon and Impressionist schools, clearly indicated in his work On theMill Pond. Stunning exploration of pastel pink hues and consideration of nature’s beauty indicates the artist’s inexplicable ability to capture the viewer. LA-4Artist: Jack PiersonTitle: Untitled, 2015Medium: Folded pigment print, AP 1/2Size: 42 ½” x 57”“OMG” artist Jack Pierson is as well known for his work in photography as for his wordsculptures. In the photographs, the artist’s signature folds are intentional and draw atten-tion to the unforgiving qualities of the paper-based medium. But the artist finds thecreases and curves simply “beautiful.” Often mining traditional motifs, Pierson’s sunsetsare especially dramatic and exceptional. Boldly colored and sensuously blurred, this untitledseascape depicts a romantic sunset in Captiva Island, Florida. Fueled by the poignancy ofemotional experience and by the sensations of memory, obsession, and absence, Pierson’ssubject is ultimately, as he states, “hope.”DONOR: ARTIST and Cheim & ReidVALUE: $30,000MINIMUM BID: $12,000

SA-1Artist: Anni Albers Title: Fox I

Media: Color photo-offset lithograph on paper

Unframed Size: 24”x 20”

Framed Size: 25 ½” x 25 ½”

Anni Albers (1899–1994) was a textile designer, weaver, writer, and printmaker who in-

spired a reconsideration of fabrics as an art form, both in their functional roles and as wall

hangings. Albers went to the Bauhaus as a young student in 1922, and did a significant

amount of printing in Hartford at Fox Press, which is where Fox Iwas made. This is the rare

instance of one of the greatest Bauhaus artists having had a direct connection with the

Wadsworth Atheneum and with Hartford. Anni Albers shows will open at the Guggen-

heim in Bilbao in 2017, larger exhibition in London at Tate Modern, and then Paris and

Dusseldorf, in 2018-19.

SA-3Artist: Jonathan AllenTitle: Rock & Roll, 2014

Media: Paper and paint on canvas

Unframed Size: 17” x 17”

Framed Size: 18” x 18”

Jonathan Allen's work draws on myriad sources, referencing art history, pop culture, and

current events to engage the current cultural landscape. Allen received a BA in Visual Arts

from Columbia University and his drawings and paintings have been exhibited at a num-

ber of New York galleries and not-for-profit spaces including Lu Magnus, PS122, Socrates

Sculpture Park, Exit Art, Rotunda Gallery, and Artists Space. In 2008, Jonathan Allen was

awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Rock & Roll presents a masterful use of hard-

edged collage, which transforms through painterly strokes into a superb emulation of

light. The title suggests a rebellious combination of classic, straightforward motion from

the pyramid structure to an unexpected pattern of strobing stage lighting, which high-

lights the artist’s experimental nature.

SA-4Artist: Lynn BeaulieuTitle: River God

Media: Graphite and watercolor

Unframed Size: 17’’x 22’’

recreating the experiences of life that surrounded him. Self-taught, his fine drawing tech-

work has won many awards and has been exhibited at the New Britain Museum of Ameri-

can Art, and has been chosen by local designers for installation in Connecticut designer

show houses. River God is a distinct artwork based on an English Coade Stone garden

and ultimately gives it a new life on canvas.

Unframed Size: 30” x 20”

Framed Size: 21 3/16” x 31 5/16”

In 2015, MATRIX 172 artist Mark Bradford designed the poster to celebrate the 40th An-

niversary of the MATRIX series. Only 100 copies were made of the limited-edition poster.

Even fewer were signed by the artist. Bradford’s poster image―a photograph of the

paper, paint, and cords pulled from the wall in the creation of his wall drawing―shows

the detritus of his creative process. Bradford repurposes these materials in sculptures. In

2017 Bradford will represent the US at the Venice Biennale in a solo exhibition project for

the American Pavilion.

SA-9Artist: Yi Chen Title: Untitled, 2005

Media: Collage

Unframed Size: 12” x 12”

Framed Size: 16 3/4" x 16 1/4"

Yi Chen's work begins with collages he makes from pop culture and fashion magazines

collected from his native Beijing as well as from other Eastern and Western countries.

These collages meld together facial features of models and media figures to create charac-

ters that form a new hybridized vision of the human race. The dramatically cropped heads

with bulbous eyes and askew features are rendered in reaction to the ever-changing stan-

dards of beauty in modern society and capture the reality of today's global melting pot.

These collages of reconstituted faces act as models for Chen's paintings. Untitled, 2005 is

a great example of Chen’s style, with its distorted eyes and lips.

etic and luminous turquoise stripes into a complete abstraction while sharing the

shimmering surface and the constantly changing light. The vertical stack of striped canvas

is an extension of her pool series combined with an exploration of how prime numbers af-

stract Expressionism. Robert De Niro Sr.’s works reside in museum collections including the

Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Whitney Museum of

American Art. Over the course of his nearly fifty-year career, De Niro continued to paint

mesmerizing landscapes, interiors and figures with distinctly modern abstract shapes of

resentation of De Niro Sr.’s interest in abstract figures and his exceptional vision regarding

vibrant color use to highlight his dedication to Expressionism. In original frame, first edition

SA-15Artist: Mark DionTitle: Young Demonologists, 2016

Medium: Silkscreen on paper, 21/30

Size: 12 ½” x 15 ½”

Framed Size: 20 1/8” x 16 ¾”

Mark Dion was the featured artist in MATRIX 173 in 2015-16. Dion’s work examines the

ways in which public institutions and dominant ideologies shape our understanding of his-

tory, knowledge, and the natural world. “The job of the artist,” he says, “is to go against

the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception and convention.” Young

Demonologists is based on a drawing done in his signature red and blue architect’s pencil.

The image also demonstrates Dion’s practice of merging science, art, and fantasy, exempli-

fied by his imaginary demons of the air and sea. The artist’s sense of humor emerges in

the grinning pair of young demonologists with their tools: a four-pronged fish spear, a

fishing gaff, and a fishing or bird net. Even with their tools (or weapons), the young scien-

tists appear to be overpowered by the alien hybrid creatures that surround them. The col-

lection of the Wadsworth Atheneum includes numerous prints by Dion as well as a major

work, Providence Cabinet (2001), a well-organized cabinet filled with “curiosities” discov-

ered on an archeological dig in Providence, Rhode Island.

SA-17Artist: Elizabeth EndersTitle: Petunia III, 2011

Media: Watercolor, pencil on paper

Unframed Size: 14 ½” x 11”

Framed Size: 16 ¾” x 13 ¾”

New York artist Elizabeth Enders’ work takes a variety of forms: text-based paintings, ab-

stracted landscapes and seascapes, and intimate botanicals. Some of her earliest works

were florals, inspired by her mother’s love of arranging flowers. However, as seen in Petu-

nia III, the artist does not make any attempt to capture plants in realistic detail. She

explains, “I do not have the training to do a real botanical, a proper one (as in highly de-

tailed, scientific illustrations), but it really is using the basic look of the flowers and then

launching off with some kind of inspiration.” Enders’ florals possess a vitality that brings

them to life. Her prints, drawings and watercolors are in the collection of the Wadsworth

Atheneum. Her work was featured in two solo exhibitions: the Addison Gallery of Ameri-

can Art at Phillips Academy and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

In his art, Fritz Horstman addresses the ever-moving seam between nature and culture. It is

a virtually indefinable territory, because it permeates every corner of human life. Every

aspect of the dialectic is in response to its opposite. Horstman selects only a small portion

of the myriad possible interactions to investigate. One such examination is seen in Pine

Cone Drawing, which he completed during his trip to Japan in August and September

2015 as artist-in-residence at Shiro Oni Studios in Onishi, Japan, producing drawings,

books, videos, sculptures and sound projects. This particular work is an ink print on washi

Medium: Color infrared photograph

Framed Size: 18 3/16” x 14 3/16”

Creating photographs since 1989, Marcia Reid Marsted is best known for her signature

color infrared photographs of objects and the landscape. The acid tones of her color

palette lend the images a highly evocative, otherworldly presence. The surreal Mademoi-

selle Verte, meaning “Miss Green” in French, depicts a most unusual marble figurative

tombstone in a Parisian cemetery.

SA-32Artist: N. SmithTitle: Untitled (Edinburgh Castle, 1776)

Media: Ink and graphite drawing

Unframed Size: 16 ½” x 15 ¼”

Framed Size: 5 3/16” x 19 9/16”

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh,

Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. As one of the most important strongholds

in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts

from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of

1745. N. Smith portrays the grandiose structure with utmost attention to detail, while

highlighting the castle’s strength throughout the times of wars and sieges. N. Smith is

known as a printer, but this particular piece emphasizes his talents as a skilled artist as well.

The two dates on the drawing are 1335, the year the castle was built, and 1776, the year

the drawing was done by N. Smith. Inscription on verso.

SA-33Artist: Unknown Chinese PainterTitle: Six 19th Century Chinese Watercolors of Birds,

Decoratively matted and framed

Media: Watercolor on silk

Framed Size: 13 ½” x 16 ½” each

Chinese export watercolors were painted in the port cities of China for sale to western

customers in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Works were done in watercolor or

gouache, initially on European papers, particularly paper produced by the English firm of J.

Whatman, but later on pith “paper,” produced from the pith of the Chinese plant tong

cao. Particularly popular were sets illustrating tea culture, the silk industry, and the making

of porcelain as they explained the products imported to the west. Colors used were those

common in Chinese painting, but there was a clear tendency for primary hues to predomi-

nate, especially in those done on pith paper.

SA-34Artist: Timothy WehrleTitle: Head Portrait (Light Bulb), 2014

Media: Colored pencil on paper

Framed Size: 12" x 11 1/8”

The work of Iowan artist Timothy Wehrle involves layers of intricate pattern and color,

often made up of miniscule repeated imagery—the same face or tiny body drawn over

and over again. Navigating the space between lighthearted commentary and overt social

criticism, the dream-like quality of his work often borders on psychedelic. Wehrle has

shown in a number of exhibitions, including at P.P.O.W. Gallery, New York, Cavin Morris

Gallery, New York, Dieu Donne New York, and the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa.

SA-35Artist: John H. P. WheatTitle: Barn and Shed

Media: Oil on canvas

Unframed Size: 10” x 8”

Framed Size: 14 1/8” x 12 1/8”

John H. P. Wheat is fascinated by local barns and other working buildings in Northern

Connecticut. He believes that they are part of a disappearing agricultural heritage that has

survived since colonial times. Barn and Shed is one of a series of color studies done for a

larger painting now owned by a collector in Chicago. It is a barn local to the artist with

curious outbuildings. While the structure is overgrown, it appears to still be in use and has

been for a long time. Wheat’s sculptures, watercolors, drawings, and oil paintings have

been shown at the Instituto Allende, Silvermine Guild of Artists, and the West Hartford Art

League.

SA-36Artist: John H. P. WheatTitle: Root and Branch Triptych

Media: Charcoal and acrylic wash

Size: 30” x 30” each

Inspired by forms observed in tree limbs and exposed root structures, this work by John H.

P. Wheat started out as a charcoal under-drawing. However, rather than lose the

spontaneity of the drawing by painting over it, the artist chose to develop a transparent

white acrylic wash to “fix” the drawing and give it an additional layer. Another source

of inspiration is “grass writing” a loose Chinese calligraphic style that emphasizes an

allusive flow in the line rather than a strict rendering of a character’s form.

Media: Graphite

Framed Size: 21” x 24”

Inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha, the title of this work, Hanamachi Dreams, refers to the

Hanamachi district in Kyoto, the locale of the city’s famed geisha houses. The model for

the drawing, dressed in a kimono and holding her fan, is depicted as reflective and per-

haps dreaming of bygone evenings.

SA-39Artist: Mark Williams Title: Metallic Puffy Blue Grand Pink Bristol, 2015

Media: Screen print on metallic paper

Unframed Size: 22 ¾” x 14 ¾”

Mark Williams’ work is based on cave interiors, especially the formations of flowstones,

stalactites, and stalagmites. The earliest known drawings over 30,000 years old are found

in caves. Humans have been drawn to caves for a very long time, and Williams is no ex-

ception. During the past fourteen years, Williams has visited more than 80 caves and pho-

tographed the environments. His artwork is inspired by the images he captures during his

numerous trips. Metallic Puffy Blue Grand Pink Bristol has been partly printed with an

additive that makes the ink puff up, making it fragile and

elegantly three dimensional.

sharp geometry with sensuous grace. Single-sized pieces that, as if by magic, adapt to any

body type are a hallmark of the Japanalia style. This dress can be tied in either direction,

the sleeves can be folded up or left to drape full length. Layering and personal adaptation,
