Research:

Construction management, collections management, historic documentation, archival research, public outreach, building trades, and historic preservation at a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village.

Serving as a link between UVA Architectural History students, faculty, and community by networking with scholars, planning events, attending faculty meetings, engaging with students for team building and guidance, and developing a branding and outreach strategy.

Operated 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry equipment. Digitally documented artifacts and buildings at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, Jefferson’s Tufton Farm, UVA’s Academical Village and Rotunda, UVA’s Carr’s Hill, and UVA’s Midmont House.

Concisely written, thoroughly researched, and deeply considered descriptions of the University of Virginia’s buildings, landscape, and people become part of an interactive GIS map and resource database that interprets UVA’s historic Grounds for a 21st century public and scholastic audience.

Taught classes of up to 20 students, age 8-15, in fencing skills: Strategy. Athleticism. Honor. Supervised assistants; Maintained fencing equipment; Promoted sport to parents and community.

Cromwellian Drawbored Chair

The goal of this project was to master the construction of the drawbored mortise & tenon joint with hand tools, while exploring the relationship between Cromwellian furniture and modern minimalism.

Westminster Presbyterian Church: Pedestrian Entrance (Rugby Road, Charlottesville)

With Westminster Presbyterian Church’s original wall fighting a losing battle with an ancient Ash tree that must eventually be removed, I was asked to create a proposal for a new pedestrian entrance. The design includes elements of the current entrance, reflects preexisting curved retaining walls on the Church property, and invites interaction between UVA students, faculty, and community members, fulfilling the Church’s mission.

Rounded, soft shapes and materials are not a necessity for comfort. Careful attention to geometry and form alone can result in an extremely comfortable, relaxing seating experience. Here, this idea is taken to an extreme for the sake of design exploration.
