Dear WACA Members & Friends We are all very excited as we are getting things ready for our Spring WACA Workshop which will be held in Lander, Wyoming on June 19th and 20th 2014. We are always excited as we put our thoughts and ideas together to be able to provide an opportunity for quality, continuing education, as well as the opportunity to form and strengthen relationships with each other and share our knowledge and ideas.  But we are extra excited because we will be celebrating WACA’s 35thAnniversary.  For this workshop the theme we have chosen is “35 Years Through Love and Cheers”.   This theme makes me think about the Love we have, not only for the work we do, but more importantly the Love we have for the Residents we serve, and even the Love we feel for each other in our common goal to provide quality in the lives of our Residents.  And of course we have to “Cheer” each other and our Residents on. Cheer each other on when things work out well.  And provide words of encouragement to Cheer each other and the Residents on when we face challenges, changes and struggles.  Thank You to each of you for your support to keep WACA going strong.  Please take a minute to think if there is a special person who goes above and beyond to provide quality in the lives of your Residents.  Someone you would like to recognize for the work they do.   Please look for the information in this newsletter to tell you about the various categories of nomination and the details of where to send your letters. We will be having elections at this workshop and we encourage you to think about running for a position on the Board.  I have enjoyed serving on the Board, it has been a learning experience, and it has been enjoyable and even fun.   But it is also a serious commitment.  If you are interested, please be sure to read through the duties for each position on the Board, so you will be informed as to what your obligations and responsibilities would be.  I am pleased to announce that the recipients of our Scott Haycock Memorial Scholarships are Shepard of the Valley, in Casper and Goshen Care Center, in Torrington. As always the information presented in this workshop is very adaptable and is appropriate for Activity Professionals in all levels of care rather you work in a skilled nursing facility, an assisted living facility, a rehab hospital, etc.We will once again be having our Silent Auction and our 50 / 50 Raffle at our upcoming workshop, both of which benefit the WACA Education Fund.  If you are able to provide an item for the Silent Auction it would be greatly appreciated and don't forget to bring a few extra dollars to try your luck at the 50/50 Raffle. I look forward to seeing everyone in Lander on June 19th and 20th.If you feel up to dressing the part, the two colors listed for a 35th Anniversary are traditional, Coral and modern, Jade. May God Bless You All With Safe Travels. Connie Cudney, ADCWACA President

WYOMING ACTIVITYCOORDINATORS ASSOCIATION

2014 SPRING WORKSHOP

LEARNING SESSIONS

“How We Each Affect the Wheel of Life” Dr . Charla Hermann P min In our time together we will explore the many ways we can manage the healing arts and enhance the care- giving experience. We will explore the aspects of the hard core needs and natural uses of the earth element to enhance the arts and tools of transformation. We will look at the ways to use water to calm the energy and enhance the ability to remember the stories of meaning for each client's life. We will explore ways to tap into old passions and find stimulating places of new compassion to make the job more of a delight. We will tap into the wisdom of the old ones and learn to ask the right questions in order to invoke a positive interaction healing the inner wounds of the client. We will access the inner guidance that allows us to know how to find that spark of life in someone and allow it to feel good while engaged within the experience of the projects being offered.

“Looking at the Person Within.” Theresa Reddicks ADQ This session is designed to help us look at each resident as an individual and to recognize how important activities are for a full and meaningful life. Participants will work together to plan Special Events and Theme Days for all levels of functioning remembering the “person within” and the individual resident’s needs.

“Re-Kindling Our Inner Artist” Erica Kaliszewski - Life Enrichment Director This session will defiantly inspire us to be more conscious of using our untapped imaginations (as they are they we just need a nudge of inspiration). Through the study of Pioneer culture changing Artists; Erica will guide us with hands on demonstration & participant involvement to an amazing exercise in portraiture. Teach your inner artist with shape, color, form & texture, which will empower you to take home & incorporate these ideas into our Activity programs. In addition, we will explore a short bio on an amazing modern Artist whose talents were ignored until today. We can share what we enjoy learning in multifaceted Activity programs-This will add diversity and growth within you, for your residents and community.

Key Note “Empowering The Music and Dance Within Us! Feike van Dijk ADQ Don’t Just Sit there…we will be motivated to get up and dance with inspirational energy of music!  A sequel on Feike’s interactive Workshop Spring 2012. Harnessed within us is music and dance! This Key Note will help us become leaders in our Care Centers with the “Power of Fun and Joy.” Feike will share his lifetime of study and practice of creating a happy life. Wyoming weather and getting older causes the residents in our facility to be in a lot of pain, stiff and sore body parts, but by using fine motor skill movement through dance and music on regular basis, residents will progress in the ability of using their body ligaments and less pain and stiffness will result next to being a happier person.  “Ideas Ideas Ideas to Stimulate the 5 Senses!” Diana Preuninger, ADC Katheleen King ADC Dawn Fish- Wehrman ADQ Terri Newman ADC Combining all of the years’ experience of these four seasoned Activity Professional is “100 years” of practice! The most requested suggestions for WACA Workshops future topics of learning have consistently been asking for “hands on ideas for sensory stimulation for our more fragile residents.” So here is a fantastic three hours of great “tried and true activities” that we can go home and emulate! The presenters will share through demonstration and active participation terrific information with the focus on our “Five Senses” and how to keep them alive! Growing old is not for sissies, and Activity Professionals mission is to help our residents find their well-being. This session defiantly will meet these missions’ goals!
