Wa-Hi scored three rst-quarter touchdowns against

Chiawana, then added one more in each o thenext three periods. Te Blue Devil deense held the

Riverhawks to a single tally. Tose eorts led to a41-6 Big Nine Conerence Cascade Division ootball victory or the

Blue Devils and at least partly erased the disappointment elt ater anovertime loss to Kamiakin last week.

Te kids played ver y well, Wa-Hi coach Marc Yonts said o histeams homecoming eort. Chiawana is a physical ootball team.

Tey have a couple o skill kids that can run around, and theyrehard-nosed. But you just have to hand it to our kids. With all o the

emotional ups and downs this last week rom the disappointing lossto Kamiakin, and with all o the homecoming distractions, this was a

    good win or us.

    Wa-Hi nished Friday with a 4-2 division record and a 4-3 recordoverall.

Chiawana is now 1-5 in the division and 1-6 overall, and ofcially

    out o the playo picture.

It was un, Wa-Hi senior center and linebacker Ryan James said.We knew we had to come out and be real physical and just beat them

the way we know how to.Wa-Hi limited the Riverhawks to 162 yards on oense (69 yards

passing and 93 yards rushing). We were looking to stop the run, but we also had a really good

pass rush, James said. We got good pressure on the quarterback, sothat was good.

Wa-Hi totaled 338 yards on oense, with 197 rushing yardsand 141 passing yards. Wa-His Austin Schilling led all ball

carriers with 22 rushes or 140 yards. Wa-His Michael Weisnercompleted 7-o-10 passes or 141 yards and two touchdowns

with no interceptions. Moe Handcox caught our passes or 92yards and a touchdown. Gary Winston caught two passes or 22

yards and a touchdown. Winston also scored a D on a 31-yardreverse. Handcox also had the one Wa-Hi interception. He

returned the ball 33 yards but lost it on a umble that Chiawanarecovered.

Te oensive line played well, James said. Our emphasiswas on being physical, and we did that. In th e frst quarter we

stopped them on deense and got the ball where we wanted to.And Wa-Hi had an 88-yard kicko return by BrandonPorter or a touchdown to open the second hal.

Its always un when be get a big runback. Ten we donthave to go out and play oense, James said with a laugh.

Wa-Hi received the kicko to open the second hal, and

Porter grabbed the ball at the 12-yard line inches rom the out-o-bounds marker.

With a high-wire-walkers balance, Porter cut throughthe frst wave o would-be tacklers, ound the lane and raced

88-yards or the D and or Wa-His 34-6 lead with 11:47remaining on the third-quarter clock.

We played pretty well, Porter said. And the run back was

a lot o un. I grabbed the ball on the sideline. I thought I wasgoing to go out o bounds, with my tippy-toes about to touch

the white line, but I just made a couple o cuts and made a good

return. Te guys have been working on return s a lot, and the

coaches did a nice job at practice this week. Te return team dida good job blocking, and a lane opened up. I didnt think I wasthat ast. I guess Ive got a little speed.

Tis was a big ga me, Porter said. We came o o a hard

loss last week, but we bounced back and played well. And thiswin helps us to get ready or Richland on Friday.

Wa-Hi kicked o to open the game and held the Riverhawksto three-and-out.

Ater a 24-yard Chiawana punt, Wa-Hi took just two plays

to cover 59 yards or a touchdown.

Weisner hit Handcox or the 51-yard scoring play, and

Fernando Garcia booted the extra point. Wa-Hi led 7-0with 9:31 on the frst-period clock. Wa-His deense held the

Riverhawks to 1 yard on their next possession. Ater a 27-yardpunt, Wa-Hi moved 58 yards in 11 plays or a 14-0 lead with

3:08 let in the frst period. A 24-yard Weisner pass to Handcox

highlighted the drive, and Weisner ran in rom the 1-yard line.Chiwana ran our plays on its next possession. Ater ailing

to convert a ourth-and-two, the Riverhawks relinquished the

    ball on their 44-yard line.

Schilling ran or eight yards. Weisner passed fve yards toGary Winston, and then Winston ran a reverse or the 31-yard

touchdown. Wa-Hi took a 21-0 lead with 1:06 let in the frstquarter.

Ater the teams exchanged punts in the second quarter,Chiawana mounted a 12-play drive or its only score o the

game. Luc Gra passed 14 yards to Brett Adamson or the Dwith 1:19 on the second-quarter clock.

Ater the kicko, however, Wa-Hi covered 49 yards in threeplays, including a 26-yard Weisner-to-Aaron Flippo pass and

a 17-yard Weisner pass to Winston or the touchdown. Wa-Hiled 28-6 with 49 seconds let in the frst hal.

Wa-Hi led 34-6 ater Porters kicko return in the thirdquarter.

Te Blue Devils added the fnal score o the game with6:11 on the ourth-quarter clock when Matt Watson broke

three tackles and bulled his way or 12 yards to score and a giveWa-Hi a 41-6 lead. Watson also punted one time or Wa-Hi, a

49-yarder, and he contributed to several tackles on deense.Morgan Maddess also contributed to several tackles, and he

had Wa-His single quarterback sack on the night.

It was a lot o un, and we did OK, Maddess said aboutthe Blue Devils play. We missed some stu. We missed some

tackles. No. 30 (Jordan Downing, 19 carries 89 yards) ran t heball hard. Hes a big guy. I missed some tackles on him that I

couldve got, but it was a lot o un. You know, coming baKamiakin, we really needed t his. We were kinda demoral

ater that loss. But it was good that we got this win. It wius going. It will help us be ready or Richland next week.

thinking about it already.Yonts was pleased with the Blue Devils play.

We kind o challenged them a little bit, and theyresponded, he said. Im just so proud o them. Te way t

came out and worked. It was a real blue-collar eort. It wreal ancy, but you could really see that all o a sudden the

O line and the D line started getting their pads down adelivering the blow instead o cat ching it. Im really proud

kids. Tis was a nice win. Well go back to work on Mondget ready to go.

Chiawana coach Steve Gra said the Riverhawks did Te kids keep competing, he said. Teyre overmatc

age-wise and size-wise. All we ask them to do is compete

out there and try to make it a battle. But we cant give upbig plays like that, you know, against good ootball teams

(Wa-Hi). Tat puts us in a hole. Ten we just have to batto keep trying to play.
