2013 Annual Report
Gymnastics Western Australia 2013 Annual Report 1 | P a g e
Presidents Report
2013 was once again a very successful year
for gymnastics in Western Australia.
Although not a major event year, Olympics
in 2012 and Commonwealth Games in
2014, our achievements were off the
competition floor.
Once again the Board has overseen a
surplus returned to members (full details in
the financials at the end of this report). The
Board has, through diligent financial
control and management, achieved a
balance between returning successive
surpluses and not over taxing our member
clubs and athletes. The clubs must be
applauded for their continued support of
GWA which has resulted in a new record of
11,506 registered members.
The Board has continued its work on our
Strategic Plan to 2016, this has been a work
in progress for a number of years and now
that Gymnastics Australia has released their
plan we look to the Board finalising our
Strategic Plan early in 2014.
As always GWA conducted many events in
an action packed calendar, with little time
off for our dedicated staff and numerous
volunteers. Our various State
Championships continue to grow in
numbers and quality. 2013 also saw GWA
successfully host the ACR National Club
Championships in October 2013. We were
pleased to have the participation of many
interstate clubs from the east coast who
made their way west and in their own
words “had a great and enjoyable
championships”. Although our ACR
community is small in number by working
closely with our staff we succeeded in
producing a very professional event.
National Championships were in Sydney
once again and WA maintained its high
level of success, especially our junior boys
(full details elsewhere). We will now travel
to Melbourne in 2014 for the next combined
National Championships.
During 2013 we lost a dedicated
gymnastics volunteer in Kon Mel, although
retired for many years Kon’s involvement
with gymnastic as a coach and a member
of the Men’s Technical Committee is sadly
missed.
As usual we kicked off the year with
another well attended Conference in
January 2013. The timing of the
Conference suits the clubs and attendees;
however it is a large strain on our staff who
must commence planning in October of
the previous year and continue through the
Christmas break. Following the
Conference we staged our Awards Night in
February 2013. This night continues to grow
in number and status as the night where the
Association can recognise the many
award winners from all of our disciplines
and those volunteers who have
contributed to the success of the
Association.
Nationally GWA participates in vigorous
and fruitful debate with our state
counterparts and GA, this occurs at
Executive Directors meetings, Presidents’
meetings and our Annual General Meeting.
The AGM of 2013 saw Vice President
George Tatai lose his position on the Board.
George had been on the Board since 1992
and was a stalwart ally of GWA in the
“great centralisation debate” of the 1990s
which helped to establish WAIS as the
2013 Annual Report
Gymnastics Western Australia 2013 Annual Report 2 | P a g e
leading state institute in Australia. In later
years George was awarded Life
Membership of GA for his services to the
sport and he has represented Australia at
FIG level as our Council member. On a
personal level I thank George for his
dedication to all things gymnastics and his
friendship and counsel over the years,
The Board of GWA has maintained a stable
membership which leads to continuity and
consistency of decisions, however there
does need to be planned succession and
a balance between the “old guard” and
new members with fresh ideas and energy
for the continued development of the
Association.
As always we struggle to get a quorum at
the AGM and 2013 was no exception The
Board has spoken of this at the AGM and in
its own meetings and has flagged it will
introduce constitutional change to adjust
the number for a quorum and to
encourage new members to nominate for
Board positions.
At the 2013 AGM the members awarded
Life Membership to Desiree Jones for her
dedicated and extensive service to
gymnastics, especially on the judging area.
Ruth Gibbons our Executive Director has
again ably led her management team and
staff to guide GWA though another
packed year of events, education -
coaching, judging and volunteers , club
participation and development to position
gymnastics as the first choice of sport for
young children.
I take this opportunity to thank our
corporate and funding partners who help
the Association throughout the year.
Healthway with its Go for 2&5 message
continues to extend its support and
challenges the Association to continually
refocus our involvement with them to get
the message to our target audience in a
changing gymnastic landscape. The
Department of Sport and Recreation has
once again proved why it is the preeminent
sports department in Australia and has
increased its core funding as well as
funding other initiatives and pilot
programmes.
WAIS, as always has continued to develop
its Women’s programme and supported
selected athletes with individual
scholarships, we thank WAIS for their
continued and future support.
My thanks also go to the many volunteers
who contribute to maintain the
Association’s high level of service delivery.
Special thanks to the volunteers who serve
on our Technical Committees and Sub
Committees and judging panels. The
unsung heroes are the ancillary support
crews who make sure our competitions run
smoothly and hopefully on time.
I look forward to 2014 with a positive
outlook and am confident that gymnastics
in WA is in good hands and well placed to
reach its potential as a sport for all.

Gymnastics Western Australia 2013 Annual Report 5 | P a g e
Executive Directors Report
Throughout 2013 Gymnastics Western
Australia continued to further develop and
build on initiatives for the members and the
clubs. Gymnastics WA embarked on the
new strategic plan for 2014-2016. The plan
will provide the direction and strategy for
gymnastics development over the next
three years. The strategic activities will be
underpinned by the organisation’s values
which will guide Gymnastics WA through
the plan, these values include; Integrity,
Leadership, Respect and Excellence.
Currently Gymnastics WA has a
membership of 11506 athlete members
and 468 technical members across 41
clubs. There has been increase in growth in
membership over the year and by working
together, GWA is excited by the potential
to further strengthen our clubs, increase our
membership base, upgrade the State
Gymnastic Centre and expose the
wonderful sport of gymnastics to the wider
community.
With continuous work by all, GWA sustained
an annual surplus. This allows GWA to
further maintain reserves which provides a
safeguard for business continuity, as well as
being able to implement strategic activities
in education and club workforce in 2014
and commence further upgrades in the
State Gymnastic Centre.
WA was well represented at Australian
Championships throughout all Gymsports in
2013 with some outstanding results. A huge
thank you must go to the many volunteers,
coaches and judges who have assisted to
make sure that WA can succeed and
achieve at Australian Championships.
Several athletes excelled at the
Championships, with national titles in their
respective Gymsports and many of the WA
athletes on the High Performance pathway
were selected for national squads and or
selected to represent Australia
internationally in 2013. WA coaches and
judges were also selected to represent
Australia at international events in 2013.
Congratulations to every one of you.
Gymnastic events commenced early in
2013 with the Dreamlight Perth International
Gymnastics Challenge and concluded the
event season in mid-November with the Go
for 2&5 Club Level State Championships.
The event season included 40 events, with
the major events including three state
championships, the Dreamlight Perth
International Gymnastics Challenge and
ACR National Clubs. Thanks must go to the
WAG and ACR Technical Committee with
the Dreamlight Perth International
Gymnastics Challenge and ACR National
Clubs as well as a thank you to each person
that supported these events in ensuring
they were successful. Many thanks must
also go to all the Technical Committees for
their technical direction for all events and
event organisation in allocated events
throughout 2013.
The Awards Night continues to be well
supported by the community. This event
celebrates the success of the Gymsports
athletes, coaches, judges and Clubs
throughout the previous year. This year
there were two Awards of Merit: Service
and two Awards of Merit: International.
Congratulations to all winners from the
GWA Awards Night. GWA also awarded
one Life Memberships to Desiree Jones,
congratulations and thank you. GWA
members continued to be successful in
2013 Annual Report

winning Gymnastics Australia awards,
members were recognised at the DSR
Coaching Award Night and Desiree Jones
was named the Slater and Gordon Official
of the Year at the WA ANZ Sports Star of the
Year Awards.
GWA received a grant from DSR which
gave the opportunity for GWA to upgrade
ICT equipment and software in late 2013,
allowing processes to become more
efficient. GWA continued to allocate funds
towards Workforce Development Grants
and High Performance Grants for the
gymnastics community with several
members taking the opportunity to further
progress their own skills or develop
personnel within their clubs. GWA also
developed an initiative for clubs to have
access to discounted coaching courses in
the first half of 2014.
2013 saw the continuation of the new
participation program LaunchPad to
further develop GWA’s schools program
and assist clubs with the school, community
and club links. GWA now has 7 certified
LaunchPad clubs.
The national membership survey was
completed and the results will assist GWA
with direction for club development,
workshops, and the gymnastics workforce.
GWA is fortunate to have a competent,
enthusiastic and energetic staff team. A
huge thank you to all the staff in 2013. In
2013 GWA said goodbye to Jodie Behan,
Lisa Cooper, Alida Scott and Sam Williams.
Thank you for your time at GWA and we
wish you luck for the future. GWA also
welcomed two new staff members; Nicole
Colev and Matthew Jennings and
appointed Danielle Atturo to the position of
the Education Coordinator late in 2013.
My sincere thanks go to the GWA Board for
their ongoing commitment, leadership and
support. GWA has an experienced and
competent Board to lead gymnastics in WA
well into the future.
Thank you to the volunteers, committees,
clubs, coaches, judges, event volunteers,
presenters, parents and athletes for your
contribution in 2013, without whom the
association would not operate effectively.
Lastly special acknowledgement to our
partners and sponsors, with special mention
to the Department of Sport and
Recreation, the City of Vincent, Healthway
(Go for 2&5) and WAIS.

GWA Gymsports Events
In 2013 the GWA competition calendar
offered a variety of events catering for
various divisions of competitive athletes
across seven gymsports. There were 40
Gymsport events delivered which included
the three different state championship
events, the Interscholastic Challenge and
Acrobatic National Clubs.
The competition season commenced very
early with a new event included in the
event calendar, the “Dreamlight Perth
International Gymnastics Challenge”. This
international WAG Junior Team event
followed on from the Australian Youth
Olympic Festival in Sydney and was
successfully organized and delivered by
the WAG Technical Committee from 24 – 27
January.
The Go for 2&5 Interscholastic Challenge
incorporated five gymsports into a three
day event from 27 – 29 August. Whilst
Men’s, Rhythmic and Aerobic numbers in
this event are still very small, the event
continued to attract good numbers in
Women’s Gymnastics (WAG) and
Cheerleading. WAG in particular had a 25
percent increase in numbers at this event
with eight schools participating from
primary to senior divisions.
From 4 to 7 October, Acrobatic National
Clubs was held at the State Gymnastics
Centre. This event attracted 187 athlete
entries with 58 of these entries coming from
WA Clubs. The event was an overall success
and positive feedback was provided from
interstate clubs, competitors, spectators
and volunteers.
Facilitating different gymsport events is
always a challenge due to the different
apparatus set up requirements. During
2013 we developed an invaluable working
relationship with a fairly new volunteer
organization the Big Mob. They assisted us
with numerous set up and pack up missions
with helpful and enthusiastic volunteers
who made the facilitation of these larger
events so much easier.
Event volunteers, particularly Floor
Manager positions continued to be
challenging particularly at MAG and WAG
events. Review of the role of the Floor
Manager position has occurred and
adjustments have been made to the roles
and responsibilities in an attempt to
encourage volunteers to take on this
important role at 2014 GWA events.

With the support from our funding partner,
Healthway, we were once again most
fortunate to be able to not only deliver our
branded Go for 2&5 State Championships,
Club levels, GWA Interscholastic and
AUSCheer Challenge but a new pilot, the
Go for 2&5 Champion Club Leader board.
Annually the most prestigious Club Award is
undeniably the Go for 2&5 GWA Champion
Club of the Year and to engage a larger
member awareness in 2013, this leader
board was a new inclusion to the GWA
website. It was updated monthly with the
most recent club points accumulated from
targeted events across each gymsport
during the 2013 calendar year. This not only
increased rivalry amongst several clubs
vying to win either their respective
Gymsport award or the overall champion
club award but also created more
awareness across the gymnastics
community.
State Teams
Australian Championships for
MAG/WAG/RG/TRP and ACR were held
over a two week period from 6 – 21 July
2013 at Sydney Olympic Park, this being the
second year where this competition
occurred. Having two years in one city
certainly assisted with the planning and
logistics of facilitating this large team.
To ensure there is continued succession
planning linked with the management of
these state teams, an Assistant Head of
Delegation role was included. Helen Jones
was an outstanding choice as she provided
wonderful support to the Head of
Delegation Erica Morrissey.
One of our objectives for 2013 was the
encouragement and development of
state team volunteers. In line with this
objective was to identify ways in which to
retain volunteers. The biggest detraction
from reapplying for team management
positions was the amount of driving
required. In line with this feedback, a
shuttle bus service between the state team
accommodation and the venue was
implemented. Whilst it was identified from
a coaching point of view that there
needed to be more schedules included
into this type of ground transport if it is to be
used in the future. It certainly reduced the
stress team management staff have
incurred in the past.
The AER State Team travelled once again
to attend their National Championship
event in Brisbane from 18 – 22 September
2013. Melissa Read was appointed as the
Head of Delegation.

Technical Committees
During 2013 all Technical Committees
delivered one Class 3 Event which for the
smaller Gymsports this still remains a
challenge. All of the events targeted as
these type of events were qualifying
competitions where numbers of
competitors are fairly small and not too
onerous to deliver.
Throughout most of the year some
committees were very active with planning
new initiatives and managing existing ones
together with working on existing projects.
The process for reviewing Technical
Regulations and Event Handbooks were
more effectively managed in 2013 allowing
for the completion to meet the timelines for
ratification and release to the clubs for the
commencement of the 2014 competition
season.
The support from the WAG Technical
Committee and the various volunteers who
assisted with the delivery of the WAG
International Challenge is sincerely
acknowledged and special recognition
should be given to Heidi Rose for the huge
amount of time and effort she gave to this
event. In addition, the dedication towards
delivering ACR National Clubs by the
volunteer members from the ACR Technical
Committee and community ensured that
this huge task for a small community was
not only met but was an overall success for
the sport.

Men’s Gymnastics
2013 was a positive step forward from a
management perspective for MAG. The
technical committee was re-formed and
able to take positive steps towards the future
development of the sport within the State. I
took on the role as technical director for the
first time in 2013 and am grateful for the
commitment of all of the members of the
committee in 2013.
Events
In 2013, the Level 1 to senior competition
season was held in the first half of the year.
We saw a slight increase in numbers for
participation in levels 1 to 5, with MAG
Assessment day and the MAG Team
Pennants seeing a modest jump in numbers.
In 2013 the technical committee once again
ran the MAG Judges Invitational after being
unable to run the competition in the previous
year. The Judges Invitational saw a slight dip
in numbers from the equivalent competition
in 2012 the MAGHPC Friendship Challenge.
Following on from the first interschool
competition in 2012, we saw the second
running of that event for MAG in 2013, with a
large increase in numbers, from 12 gymnasts
in 2012 up to 29 gymnasts in 2013. This shows
a promising increase in the interest for the
competition within the schools arena, which
is encouraging for the future development of
the sport.
MAG was also well represented at the
Australian Championships in Sydney in 2013.
WA sent gymnasts from level 6 under 12 up to
Senior International. A particular highlight
was gold for our Level 7 under 14 team.

2013 also saw the retirement from gymnastics

(MAGHPC/Vital). Elliott dedicated many
years to the sport and was a fine role model
for younger gymnasts. We wish Elliott all the
very best in his retirement from the sport.

Women’s Gymnastics
2013 started off with a bang, the WAG
Technical Committee in conjunction with
the WAG Judges Committee ran a very
successful Junior International competition
in January. Nationally, our State Teams
produced great results snagging numerous
Gold and Silver medals, and our
competitive numbers continue to show
positive growth at all Levels of our State
Competitions.
The year started with a full committee and
near full judging sub-committee being
elected at the WAG Forum. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank the
Committee(s) for all their time and effort
throughout the year and I look forward to
working with them again in 2014. Special
mention goes to outgoing Technical
committee members Peta Costa and
Amanda Clark, whose contributions to the
WAG Technical Committee over the last
couple of years have assisted the
Committee achieving its goals.
Desiree Jones was nominated and ratified
as Gymnastics WA’s newest Life Member
for her contribution to Women’s
Gymnastics. The WAG Technical
Committee would like to congratulate
Desiree on this recognition, and thank her
for her tireless dedication and contribution.
National Championships
WA fielded a quality team to National
Championships, with 4 Teams medalling.
The International Level 6, 10 and Junior
International Team’s taking Silver, and the
National Level 8 Team winning Bronze.
Individually, Olivia Vivian took the coveted
Senior National Bar Gold Medal from a high
quality field. Sarah Stacey (International
Level 6), Aya Meggs (International Level 10)
and Georgia Thomas (National Level 8)
performed outstandingly to take out the
Silver Medals in their respective All-Around
competitions.
The GA National Awards were also
presented during National Championships.
WA again was well represented receiving a
number of Annual awards:

continued representation in the National
Squad demonstrates how much the WAIS
program continues to lead the country,
providing a World Class program for WA
athletes.
ANZ Sport Star Awards
Desiree Jones was awarded the prestigious

Desiree is the first WAG Judge to be
awarded the Slater & Gordon Lawyers
Official of the Year, and only the second
GWA Judge.
New & Developing Initiatives
The WAG Technical Committee proposed
a number of new initiatives in 2011, with
many of them initially actioned in 2012 and
2013. These initiatives all aim to encourage
Athletes to continue in WAG and increase
their skill and quality level; by giving them
additional opportunities and incentives.
These were:
Additional National Levels Tour (National
Levels 6-10). A supplementary team to our
State Team to Nationals was chosen to
compete in Queensland at the Border
Challenge competition against teams from
New South Wales, Australian Capital
Territory and Queensland.
National Levels 4-6 Talent Squad. A squad
of Athletes from Levels 4-6 was chosen from
State Championships, to train with our State
Team Coaches and WAIS expert coaches
at the WAIS Training gym at Challenge
Stadium.
Perth International Gymnastics Challenge.
A Junior International competition was
created and hosted in WA. The intention of
the competition is to provide upcoming
Australian athletes, coaches and judges an
opportunity to gain important international
competition experience, without having to
leave the country.
All of these initiatives were very well
received and will be again implemented in
2014/2015, along with other initiatives still in
planning.
May 2014 be another fantastic year for
Women’s Gymnastics in WA.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Implementation of a new Code of Points
I would like to thank the RG community for
the support in what was a challenging year
with the implementation of the new code of
points for the international streams and
national program changes to National Level
7 to 10. There were large changes in the way
the sport is judged and I must thank all the
judges involved in judging these higher levels
for upgrading to the new code of points with
interim course in early 2013 while waiting for
the international judging course which was
delayed by FIG (Federation International
Gymnastic) until November 2013 in
Singapore.
Congratulations to Karyn Murray who has
successfully completed the FIG international
judging course in Singapore and retained her
Brevet III qualification. Unfortunately due to
limits on numbers allowed to sit the course
and the difficulty of the course, WA have only
one international judge accredited for this
cycle. Karyn has done very well as Australia
in total were only able to accredit 4
international judges.
Successful Achievements & Outcomes
RG had some good results at Australian
Championships with some medals. Senior
athletes, Amy Quinn and Neisha Rizzo were
awarded places within the Australian
National Squad. The RG Technical
Committee noted that the state team didn’t
repeat the success of previous years and
have developed strategies to further
improve the standard of performance
moving forward.
The accreditation of judges through the GA
G-Educate system was significant as many
judges were required to attend a bridging
course due to the change in code. Thanks
to Teresa Evans for traveling from South
Australia to present this bridging course for
the higher level judges and Barbara Smith,
and Karyn Murray for presenting other
courses during the year.
Numbers of gymnasts competing was fairly
consistent in relation to previous years. It was
encouraging to see a continued
improvement in participation in these lower
levels, particularly in National Level 1-3 and
International Level 5 competitors.
GA Annual Awards
The GA National Awards were presented at
2013 Australian Championships. This was the
first year where 5 and 10 Year Athlete Awards
were presented. In addition of note, the
recognition of 2012 Olympian Janine Murray
and coach Krasimira Yurukova occurred.

I would like to acknowledge what an
important contribution volunteers make to
the RG community. We have many people
involved from the Technical Committee (TC)

wonderful volunteers who give of their time
and efforts to support our gymnasts at events
and in the state teams. Every event relies on
a large amount of volunteers including floor

would not be possible to run state events.

Trampoline Sports Report Overview
WA Trampoline Sports enjoyed a successful
2013. Two athletes from WA were selected
to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic
Festival in Sydney, Jayden Cooney and
Abbie Watts.
WA fielded a reasonably large team of 29
at Australian Championships and brought
home 13 medals. WA proudly showcased 4
athletes, Leilani Golding, Jayden Cooney,
Curtis Booth and Abbie Watts as they
represented Australia at the World Age
Group Competition in Bulgaria in
November. Tony Burton, WA’s only FIG
Judge, attended as a Double Mini Tramp
judge.
The implementation of an entirely new
Age/ Levels Competition Programme to
bring WA in line with the new National
Pathway took up much of the Technical
Committee’s time and resources in 2013.
Many hours were spent on this and we must
acknowledge Ken Robertson for his
commitment to this task. 2014 will have its
challenges as we implement the changes.
Judging
Judging shortages are an ongoing
problem. Laurie Zagari committed to
encouraging new judges into our sport and
upgrading existing judges. The Technical
Committee agreed that the role of judging
coordinator requires support with the
implementation of a subcommittee and
this will be reviewed in 2014.
National Awards
The GA Annual Awards were presented at
Australian Championships where 5 and 10
year athlete awards were presented.

Equipment
We have a time of flight machine ordered
(from Russia) and we are looking forward to
taking delivery in early 2014. The Technical
Committee has also addressed concerns
regarding appropriate equipment for
competitions, particularly qualifiers. This is
ongoing and requires further discussion.
Future Direction
The WA Technical Committee has been
working towards multi Club representation
in the Technical Committee and in the
overall development of Trampoline Sports
in WA moving forward. We have many
talented athletes, coaches and supporters
and look forward to showcasing their
achievements in 2014 and beyond.

GWA Services & Development
The Services & Development section went
through many changes in 2013; almost a
complete change of staff; with the
resignation of Sam Williams as Manager,
Lisa Cooper as Club Development Officer
and Jodie Behan as Education Officer and
also the start of the roll out of the new
coaching framework. A very busy and
exciting time!
GWA continued to offer the GymAbility
Adult classes, coached by Oleg Tarkov.
The average weekly attendance for this
was 10, from a range of service providers
and individuals. Nicole Colev joined the
Services & Development team in July as the
YPC & Inclusion officer and quickly gave
the program a new facelift. Each
participant now works to an individualised
training plan with assistance from Oleg,
Nicole and their carer (if they have one).
The participants have set goals and work
each week towards these. It is hoped that
word will spread about the enjoyment and
achievements that are occurring at the
SGC each week, and that more service
providers will access the program to allow
the program to two sessions per week. It is
also hoped to get coaches from the
gymnastics community interested in
getting involved in the program. A number
of one off Come ’n Try sessions for disability
groups were also held. The work done in
GymAbility over the last few years was
recognised as a very successful pilot by the
Department of Sport and Recreation.
GfA was a strong focus for the Services &
Development team during 2013. This will
continue in 2014. Two GfA Education days
were held with Fun, Friendship &
Fundamentals the theme. Michelle Ranieri
presented the first of these covering
aspects of ‘Funtastic Gymnastics’. The
weekend involved 2 workshops covering
creative, physical and fun games to play as
part of warm ups; ideas for implementing
circuits to utilise small spaces and
incorporating hand held apparatus, music
and other gymsports into your recreational
programs. Kit Poole was the guest
presenter for the next Go for 2&5 GfA
Education day. GWA received a
WorkForce Development grant to facilitate
this workshop. Kit Poole, who has her own
gym in NSW, was a physical education
teacher and is referred to as a guru in the
field presented multiple workshops that
covered the broad areas of KinderGym,
GfA and Recreational gymnastics.
GWA tried a new approach to the
Challenge Cup in 2013. In true GfA style,
clubs were encouraged to enter groups of
all ages and abilities in any or all of the
categories; with apparatus, without
apparatus, on or with large apparatus or
with innovative apparatus. Promotion for
the November event occurred each week
in the GWA bulletin along with direct club
emails sharing ideas for their club routines.
Unfortunately, the event had only one club
enter. We will try again in 2014 with a
GymFest!
Communication to the gymnastics
community and the wider community via
the website and Facebook page continues
to be a work in progress. 2014 will see a
new look website and customer
management system, and as such the work
continues! The weekly bulletin was sent to
675 addresses. Facebook continued to be
used as an information avenue at events,

workshops and courses and the ‘likes’ at
the conclusion of the year were close to
1600 a growth of about 400 over the
previous year. As social media is an area of
great opportunity the use of Facebook and
similar sites will continue to be explored in
2014.

Participation
The participation funding awarded to GA
continued to be acquitted through the
LaunchPad initiative in 2013. A Youth
Participation Coordinator (YPC) was
appointed to oversee the implementation of
the initiative in each state and a support
network was formed. A series of
teleconferences was held and a face to
face meeting conducted in November. This
was scheduled to coincide with the
International ACHPER Conference to allow a
series of LaunchPad workshops to be
presented to teachers from across Australia.
A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU)
regarding the implementation of this national
initiative remained in place for each of the
states.
LaunchPad is a joint initiative to increase
participation in the 0-12 membership. It is a
national program that is designed to be
implemented consistently across all
Gymnastics Australia affiliated clubs.
The Blast Off! Checklist has been further
refined and developed with clubs across the
nation working through the process to
receive LaunchPad certification and a
personalized Stamp of Approval. A process
for reviewing each clubs implementation
and embracement of the LaunchPad
philosophy of the initiative was developed
called Orbit! Each of the four clubs (Spirit
Gym Sports, Southern Star Trampoline
Academy, Rainbow Gym and Northern
Districts Gymnastic Club) that received their
Stamp of Approval in 2012 was reviewed and
action plans to support each clubs
continued involvement in the initiative were
developed. A further four clubs (Active
Gymnastics, Star-Mites Gym Sports and West
Coast Gymnasts Inc and Peel Dynamic
Gymsports Inc) received their Stamp of
Approval in 2013. As part of a North West
regional visit, a Zoom! Workshop was
conducted and the inspiration provided to
start the clubs in the area on their LaunchPad
journey. In total, 26 clubs are working
through the initiative in WA and are in varying
stages of completion.
Three Zoom! Workshops were conducted in
2013 with a total of 33 coaches attending.
This achieved the target set by GA in this
area. The membership target of 10 089
members in the 0-12 year old age group was
exceeded with membership in this area
totalling 10 291 for 2013.
LaunchPad lessons were conducted in three
schools programs during 2013. Mt Hawthorn
PS & Education Support Centre, South Perth
Primary & Presbyterian Ladies College.
Promotion of the availability of this valuable
resource has been the focus of the marketing
and communications plan due to be
released by GA and it is envisaged that the
number of school programs accessing the
initiative will increase as the market is
targeted more specifically.
GWA also facilitated programs at Scotch
College, Presbyterian Ladies College Senior
School and Christ Church Grammar Peter
Moyes Centre.

Coaching & Judging Education
2013 was a busy year in Education.
The year commenced with a Presenter and
Assessor bridging course delivered by Nick
Bugeja from GA. The intense 2 day course
was attended by 9 candidates, who at the
conclusion of the course, when deemed
competent, had completed four units of a
Cert IV in Presenting & Assessment and had
them ready to present the courses in the
new coaching framework when ready for
release.
The next two days of the same week were
the Go for 2&5 GWA Conference. Over 50
workshops were attended by 134
attendees and 20 plus presenters. The
Conference was conducted at the State
Gymnastics Centre as well as in the
conference and training rooms at the
Department of Sport and Recreation. The
two facilities allowed for a diverse range of
workshops, both theoretical and practical,
to be facilitated. Special thanks to our
interstate presenters Stacey Umeh and
Michelle Mason.
The week didn’t finish there; next came the
WAG Athlete Camp held at Northern
Districts Gymnastic Club. Coaches and
athletes were treated to two jam packed
days of specialty coaching from guest
coaches Stacey Umeh & Michelle Mason,
along with 9 of WA’s experts. Over 180
athletes from level 1 -10 and from 20 clubs
both regional and metropolitan
participated. It was great to have 7
regional clubs represented at the camp.
The G-Ed4U blockbuster education
weekends were calendared to contain a
combination of judging and coaching
courses as well as workshops. These were
designed so clubs could make plans for
those weekends. Six weekends were
planned for the year. Of the 32 courses that
were scheduled 72% were held, only one
coaching course didn’t go ahead and 8
judging courses. This was due to insufficient
numbers.
July 2013 saw the beginning of the roll out
of the new Coaching framework. Coaches
now starting from the younger age of 14
having the opportunity to become
Beginner Coaches. The framework now
involves eight levels of accreditation. These
accreditations now also being RTO
recognized with coaches receiving
certification in sports coaching as well as
their accreditation. The introduction of the
new framework also saw the change to on
line learning, doing away with the
coaching accreditation assessment books.
Candidates now complete the course as
competent or not yet competent. GWA
conducted three Beginner Coaching
courses, two in the metro area and one in
Broome following their Invitational event.
The next level of accreditation,
intermediate, will be released in 2014.
Total Education Attendees = 939
Coaching Course = 232
Judging Courses = 64
Workshops = 643
Leadership Academy has become a very
successful event on the education
calendar. This year the two day program
has 14 attendees from 5 clubs. 3 were from
Pearl Coast and one from Hedland. Again
it is great to see the regional clubs
embracing the opportunities provided for
their club leaders of the future.

Regional Associations
North West Regional Gymnastics Association
2013 saw a number of changes within the
structure of the NWRGA. The NWRGA
introduced a new form of management and
with the support of GWA and DSR has
undertaken the rewriting of the associations
constitution. It was identified that these
changes were required to ensure the
association remained progressive whilst
having direction, purpose and stability.
A most significant change occurred in July
when, after so many years of holding the
NWRGA together and planning on stepping
down, Rose Clark finally was able to step
down as President of the NWRGA. Rose
worked tirelessly for the NWRGA and its
members, holding together an association
that its members wanted and needed but
lacked personnel. Her dedication and
support to the sport of gymnastics is
remarkable having become involved when
her daughter commenced at Karratha
Gymnastic Club over 20 years ago. All
members of the NWRGA and beyond
acknowledge Rose’s commitment and are
thankful for the dedication and drive she
showed, inspiring all. Thank you Rose.
A marked increase in growth in competitor
numbers at the two major NW events was
seen in 2013. This growth is testament to the
NW clubs committees and their coaches
dedication, as well as the parental support of
athletes. The distance travelled twice a year
by many members to either Karratha or
Broome is remarkable. Competitions not only
provide our athletes an arena to display their
skill, but also provide opportunities for
education and networking for all NW clubs,
whether they are competitive or not.
The NWRGA would like to thank all members
of Exmouth Gymnastic Club, Gascoyne
Gymnastic Club, Karratha Gymnastic Club,
Hedland Gymnastic Club, Pearl Coast
Gymnastic Club and Kununurra Gymnastic
Club for their support.
Membership
Gymnastics membership within the North
West of WA is showing an overall steady
growth however some clubs have seen a
decline in membership. Membership is often
limited due to lack of and inability to retain
coaches in North West towns. It is hoped the
new coaching structure may assist in
resolving this issue

Following the Go for 2&5 NWRGA Regional
Gymnastics Championships Matt Lean,
James Keatley and Krystal Cilia presented
athlete / coach clinics which were well
attended and highly received. Paula Dick
provided a LaunchPad presentation to club
coaches and officials.
The annual Broome clinics were also very well
attended. As well as athlete and coach
clinics, the Beginner Face to Face course
and Zoom was presented. All clinics and
courses were well attended with great
response from those that attended. Thank
you to James Keatley, Heidi Rose, Paula Dick,
Tracey Holmes and North West presenter and
coach Krystal Cilia for enabling the
education programming to be facilitated.
Events
North West Badge Testing
Badge Testing was held in Carnarvon,
Karratha, Hedland, Broome and Kununurra.
The event was somewhat difficult to organise
logistically but the event was undertaken
and highly successful.
The recording of WAG athletes and having
routines assessed in Perth did alleviate some
of the logistical problems being faced. The
feedback given by the Perth judges on these
routines was said to be highly beneficial and
well detailed.
Clinics were also offered over this weekend
by coach/judges who attended clubs, with
the NWRGA recognizing the importance of
mentoring and education of the coaching
teams. The clinics offered MAG specific as
well as generic skills and drills.
North West Regional Gymnastics Association
Go for 2&5 NWRGA Regional Championships
155 athletes attended this competition, with
Exmouth Gymnastic Club competing for the
first time at a NWRGA event. It was a great
weekend of competition and a celebratory
atmosphere was noted with the NWRGA
celebrating 20 years of Regional Gymnastic
Championships and the event being the first
major competition held in the newly opened
Karratha Leisureplex.
NWRGA NW Invitational
The increase in competitors seen at the Go
for 2&5 NWRGA Regional Gymnastic
Championships continued at the NWRGA
NW Invitational with 160 competitors
registering for this event. West Coast
Gymnastic Club ventured north for this event
and it was great to have them attend and to
experience a North West event.
Pearl Coast Gymnastic celebrated their 10
year anniversary and provided many
opportunities for all to socialize and
celebrate the competition and their
anniversary.
The NWRGA would like to thank Heidi Rose,
Michael William, Matt Lean, Jo Bulsing,
Sharron Isard, Colleen Ballantyne, Penny
James, Tracey Holmes, James Keatley,
Michelle Yardley and Jordan West for their
continued support and for attending the

Regional Associations
Southern Regional Gymnastics Association
Our 2013 Regional Congress welcomed
Lake Grace back as a club. They were kind
enough to host congress and took the
opportunity to have several coaches
attend the course. Congratulations Lake
Grace Gymnastics Club, and on the return.
We would like to thank the Department of
Sport and Recreation for their sponsorship
of our event, and Alida Scott and Matt
Lean for coming down and doing the
coaching courses and presentations.
We welcomed Denmark Gymnastics Club
to our Go for 2&5 Southern Regional
Gymnastics Championships at the
Katanning Leisure Centre in 2013. It was
their first year as a club and they all
performed beautifully. The competition
was a lively event with athletes competing
over two days. The SRGA would like to
thank Heidi Rose, Colleen Ballantyne,
Sharron Isard and Donna Grocott for
coming down and judging our event and
helping to make it a success. The athletes
welcomed a return to event shirts, with
thanks to Co-operative Bulk Handling for
their grant to help make this possible.
The SRGA had over 20 athletes attend the
Go for 2&5 Club Level State
Championships. It is always exciting to see
the regions athletes working together as a
team, with big congratulations to the Level
3 boys who won the team event. All the
athletes looked fantastic in their Regional
Uniforms. Congratulations to all the
Athletes, Coaches and their Parents.
Gymnastics is definitely growing within the
Southern Region, with both Denmark
Gymnastics Club and Flipzone from Albany
affiliating with Gymnastics WA in 2013.
There is talk of 3 more clubs accrediting in
2014.
2014 is my last year as Chairperson of the
SRGA. I would like to thank Amanda Nenke
of Dumbleyung Gymnastics Club, and
Sharon Randell of Twilight Aerials
Gymnastics, Esperance for being on the
Committee, and Helen Westley for sticking
with us through another year.

High Performance Centres
MAG HPC Men’s High Performance Centre
National Coach John Curtin visited the
program several times during the year,
continuing his positive interaction with both
coaches and athletes. His continued
support for the program and the athletes is
highly valued, with boys striving to ‘raise the
bar’ whilst John is in the gym.
National Clinics
Several athletes from the MAGHPC
represented the program at the MAG
Senior & Junior Camps in January:
Junior - Joshua Di Nucci, Harrison Jones,
Elija Meegan, Matthew Richardson &
Joseph Spellacy with coach Oleg Tarkov.
Senior - Elliott Cook, Mitchell Nylander &
Max Woloszyn with coach Igor Bespalov.
International Representation
Elliott Cook was selected to represent
Australia on pommel horse at two World
Cup events in 2013. Elliott attended the
Doha World Cup and Cottbus Challenger
World Cup in Germany.
Australian Championships
The MAG HPC program shone once again
at the 2013 Australian Championships, with
HPC athletes winning 12 gold medals.
Stand out performances came from Level
7/U14 athlete Joseph Spellacy (NDGC) and
Level 9 U/16 athlete Gabriel O’Sullivan
(NDGC) who both dominated their
respective divisions, as well as the Level 7
U/14 team. Congratulations to all MAGHPC
athletes who were members of the MAG
State Team for 2013.

National Clubs
In September, Coach Tristan Treeby and
Manager Philippa Brown accompanied 5
young MAGHPC athletes in Level 4 & 5 to
the 2013 MAG National Clubs Competition
in Caloundra, QLD. For most of the
athletes, it was their first time competing
interstate and their results were very
commendable.
Retirees
After 15 years with the MAGHPC Program,
Senior International athlete Elliott Cook
(Vital) retired from the program.
Throughout his career, Elliott was a WAIS
Scholarship Holder, National Squad
Member and Australian representative.
Elliott won numerous medals on pommel
horse at Australian Championships
culminating in a Bronze Medal at the
Dityatin Cup in 2010. Elliott has been an
excellent role model for the younger
MAGHPC athletes over the past 15 years
and I would like to thank Elliott for his
commitment to Men’s Gymnastics and the
MAGHPC throughout his career. Best
wishes for the future Elliott!

Coaches
Our coaching team in 2013 consisted of
Igor Bespalov (HC), Oleg Tarkov, Elena
Bespalova & Tristan Treeby. The coaches
continue to work to the best of their abilities
and constantly strive for results and
opportunities for the boys.
Many thanks to everyone who plays a role
in the MAGHPC, from Coaches, Parents,
Athletes, Medical Staff and GWA. Without
your continued support, commitment and
passion, this program could not carry on
from one year to the next.
Looking forward to all the new
developments and possibilities which lay
ahead in 2014.

Western Australian Institute of Sport - WAG
Summary
2013 was a rebuilding year for Women’s
Gymnastics in Australia, following the 2012
London Olympics. The national focus was
on D score development, with athletes
minimizing travel to international events in
order to stay at home and develop their
repertoire of skills.
WAIS saw National Coach, Peggy Liddick,
visit 3 times for Daily Training Environment
(DTE) camps where the girls had a chance
to show off their skill development.
National Championships and National Club
Championships saw a new crop of WAIS
Juniors stamp their mark on the National
scene. These up and coming gymnasts are
surging ahead; the improvements between
the 2 major National events showing their
skill development pathways are well in
hand.
The strong talent base within the WAIS
Potential and Developing International
Class gymnasts, and the GWA TID and
Development Squad girls was evident from
the excellent results once again achieved
in the IDEAL testing program. The high
number of WAIS gymnasts ranked in the top
25% in the country, as well as the spread of
these girls across all age groups in the
testing pool, shows that WAIS is strongly
situated to continue to be a leading
contributor to Australian Gymnastics. WAIS
also continues to excel in the physical
preparation areas in National testing.
