Hams of the Year for 2012 Recap
SDR Explained at TARC Meeting
The Sullivan kids were honored as TARC’s
Hams of the Year for 2012. Their accomplish-
ments over the last two years are impressive.
These kids still surprise the Amateur Radio
community in Bell County. They have passed
tests that I thought were only for adults. I even
think many adult Hams would have a problem
passing some of these tests. Their parents are to
be commended. These young adults are home
schooled and also have daily chores. To instill
these values in young people of today will make
responsible adults.
Caleb Sullivan, age 9, KF5MUN, earned his
Amateur General license in 2012. He also re-
ceived a Marine Radio Operator Permit, his
GMDSS Radio Operator's License, and is a
member of ARRL.
Joshua Sullivan, age 12, KE5WLF, holds
an Extra class Ham ticket, General Radiotele-
phone Operator License, GMDSS Radio Main-
tainer's License with Ship Radar Endorsement,
GMDSS Radio Operator/Maintainer License
with Ship Radar Endorsement, is a member of
ARRL, a Student Member of Electronic Techni-
cians Association International (ETA-I), and a
Youth Member of the Society of Broadcast En-
gineers. (Continued on page 2)
Greg Jurrens, K5GJ
of FlexRadio in
Austin explained
the technology be-
hind software de-
fined radio at the
January TARC
meeting. Tim Elli-
son, W4TME, also
from FlexRadio,
accompanied Greg
and took part in the
presentation.

...Floyd Bumpus, N5EL, became a Silent Key on Jan. 2. Services were Jan. 7 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Floyd and XYL, Wilma (also SK), were longtime TARC members. He was a well known Morse code aficionado, both American Morse and International Radiotelegraph Code. Floyd was active as an Elmer and a VE. He dem-onstrated the two codes on numerous occasions and was a docent at the Tem-ple Railroad Museum where he demonstrated the old railroad Morse code techniques complete with a Prince Albert Tobacco can “amplifier.” Condolences to
Dave, Floyd’s son.
...HamEXPO! Is April 20.
