SLEEPING BEAUTYThe Britannia Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty, a classic tale of good versus evil in a fun-filled production of music, magic and mayhem. Ashford budding actress/singer, Ellie Fiore has won a professional contract to appear in the Dickens World Pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, alongside The Voice Finalist Jamie Johnson over the Festive period. The producers of Frozen Fairytale Pantomimes’ Sleeping Beauty – were on the look-out for a talented young actress from Kent to play the part of Aurora and as luck would have it, Ellie, currently touring the UK with Channel 5’s Milkshake Live! Party Party, was able to apply due to a break in production. The show’s producers said Ellie was everything they wanted for the part. “We were looking for someone who the children would warm to, who could sing and act fantastically and also looked like a princess and Ellie ticked all the boxes” said Pantomime director Russ Spencer “For a lot of children pantomime is their first introduction to live theatre so it’s really important we make it a magical and exciting experience for them.” Ellie appears alongside The Voice finalist Jamie Johnson, who plays the Prince and Mr Baffled, and Jade from TV’s Go!Go!Go! Sleeping Beauty – The Frozen Fairytale Pantomime is at The Britannia Theatre, Dickens World, Chatham from December 9 to January 4.And is a Britannia Theatre & Ten 98 Entertainment production. THE GRAND

“Immediately fell in love with the place”, “The prices are very competitive” and “Wonderful location and historical / architectural interest and value for money, charming staff”, just a few sentences our clients, friends and customers use to describe their experiences at Folkestone’s premier venue.

Overlooking the English Channel the award winning The Grand on the Leas lights up Folkestone as the winter evenings draw in........literally in this case.Yoko Ono, former wife of the Beatles legend John Lennon chose The Grand as her venue of choice for her Folkestone Triennial piece entitled “Earth Peace” which consists of a large light spelling out the title in morse code at the very summit of the building. Every evening the Leas is bathed in the light from this exhibition piece.

With a new team for 2014 The Grand is the place to be in Folkestone. Our Glass house restaurant with its set price menus offer a delicious two course lunch or dinner for just £19.00, complete with live pianist. New items to the menu include Asparagus and Goats cheese tartlet, Russian Red from the Caspian Sea, Fillet of beef and duo of Pork Belly & Pigs Trotter in Biddenden cider.

Our Keppel’s Wine bar & Bistro has become one of the best places on the coast for live music with fortnightly free to enter Jazz nights (every other Thursday) overtaking a lot of fee charging jazz venues in town. Every Sunday we host the “Keppels Live Lounge” where a host of local talent plays from 5.30pm, again this is free to enter. Most months see Keppels play host to Gig nights (October), Ska events (December) and various other music themed nights. Keppels also hosts regular exercise classes and quiz nights. Our menu carries several favourites from The Grand Burger to Halloumi & Cous Cous, Grand Ale battered Fish and Chips or the ever popular Grand-Club Sandwich.

As an Edwardian venue it would not be right not to mention the full on Edwardian experience offered by our Salon de The tea shop which offers our home made scones, cakes and pastries with our cream tea range a must. A homemade fruit, cheese or gluten-free cream tea can range from £5.75 up to £200.00, all complemented with sea views and our talented pianists.

Finally, as Wedding venue of choice on the South Coast we have an experienced team of wedding professionals on site to help make your day as special as it can be, don’t just take our word for it, with comments on Trip Advisor like “I can honestly say this is the perfect venue for a wedding”, “Thank you all for giving us a day to remember for the rest of our lives” and “not a run of the mill chain- thank goodness!” we know we are doing something right!

Accommodation, Weddings, Conferences & Exhibitions, fine dining, relaxing dining or just a drink on the way home.

The Grand.

Something for everyone.

It’s that time of year again . . . time to dig out the Fancy Dress that you don’t mind getting soaked!

WINTER DIPPERS MAKE A SPLASH ON BOXING DAY.For one hour every year on Boxing Day, hundreds of normally sensible members of local communities go totally insane and run into the sea regardless of how cold it is... and some of them even dress up for the occasion !!

The method behind their madness though, is the raising of thousands of £’s for various charities. The “Dippers” are sponsored by friends and family for their lemming like dash into the sea and at the Folkestone event, Folkestone Lions pass the monies raised onto the charities nominated by the dippers themselves. Each of the dippers gets a Hot Toddy and a commemorative medal to remind them of the occasion…. as if the frost bite and hyperthermia weren’t enough already.

Individuals and Teams, dress in the most imaginative ways to make the event even more fun, and most “Dips” award prizes for the best dressed and for the person who has raised the most sponsorship money.

Dare to give it a go and you will find that dipping at a beach on the Kent coast in watery winter sunshine is a world apart from being there in August as your tingling muscles return to life… you will be glad you took the plunge.

Spectators are always welcome especially to encourage the hardy swimmers.

Folkestone’s Boxing Day Dip take place at Folkestone’s Sunny Sands, registration 10.30am at the Ship Inn, Dip takes place at 11.30.

Other Dips, Dover Harbour, and at Deal…. New Years Day sees the annual swim at Viking Bay Broadstairs (12 noon)

AWARD WINNING BREWERY IS THE LATEST MEMBER TO JOIN ATTAAshford and Tenterden Tourism Association, Chairman Julian Barnes, is delighted to introduce and welcome another new business to the growing association. The Old Dairy Brewery is a traditional 30 barrel microbrewery nestled deep in the heart of the ‘Garden of England’ just moments from the High Street in the picturesque market town of Tenterden. With glorious views over rolling countryside, the brewery is housed in two World War II Nissen buildings next to the Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway. The expansion comes four years after the brewery was set up on a dairy farm in the heart of the Kent countryside. It was an immediate success, building a loyal fan base among ale enthusiasts who appreciated the finely-crafted recipes, locally sourced ingredients and interesting variety of beer styles. Brewing a core range of award winning beers (Red Top, Gold Top, Blue Top) plus seasonal and speciality beers to satisfy all palates – available in both cask and bottles.

Justin CurrieDe La Warr Pavilion BexhillSaturday 8th NovemberAfter six albums with Del Amitri and three solo albums, what Curriehas learned about songwriting is that you have to make yourselfavailable to the muse. "Make sure you're bored", he says. "Make sureyou're alone."David Garza plays guitar and piano, and other musicians includemembers of White Denim, Phosphorescent and the Heartless Bastards.Together, they help Currie navigate a filler-less album that begins witha funeral and ends with a wedding. On the buoyant, almost Badfinger-esque I Hate Myself For Loving You and bijou, vintage beat-boxpropelled Priscilla, Currie's highly-attuned pop sensibility is well to the fore. There are few ifany songs on Lower Reaches that don't have darker or more wistful undercurrents, however.Indeed, even On My Conscience - ostensibly a breezy, Byrds-go-Octopus's Garden-like palettecleanser - drips lyrical bile.Elsewhere, men - and perhaps women - of a certain age willidentify with the conflicted protagonist of Half Of Me, a character torn between cordial-enough domesticity and the need to 'Go out blazing trails in a haze of rock 'n' roll.' We sayprotagonist, but we of course mean Currie, a man honest enough to admit that, even as heapproaches 49, fifty-percent of him still wants to traverse America in a tour bus.In truth, Currie can hold his head high, not least because he has just received props from thesongwriter's songwriter, Jimmy Webb. Together with the likes of Brian Wilson and KrisKristofferson.

In 2007, Iron & Wine released the casually atmospheric TheShepherd’s Dog, which debuted at No. 24 on Billboard’s Top 200Album chart and earned praise from critics hailing it as a majormusical leap forward. Fleshed out and replete with more ornatearrangements than previous long players, The Shepherd’s Dog sawIron & Wine ease into the mainstream, assisted in part by thepresence of album track ‘Flightless Bird, American Mouth’ in theTwilight at the request of actor Kristen Stewart. His next album, Ghost on Ghost, followed only two years later, captured in New York with producer and longtime associate Brian

Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats). Released to near universal acclaim; Uncut rated thealbum nine out of ten, calling it "sublime ... a work of immense beauty and scale," while TheGuardian said “Iron and Wine have risen to become one of the great modern American bands asquietly and stealthily as any of their songs.” It also earned five-star reviews from The Mail onSunday, The Independent on Sunday, and The Daily Telegraph.Recently dubbed by the BBC as ‘The Man with the Golden Voice’, legendary Sheffield-bornsinger, songwriter and former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics PaulCarrack returns to the road following his widely acclaimed recent album release ’ Rain or Shine’,a mix of new original songs and classic tracks.

CarmenAstor Theatre DealFriday 28 NovemberSet in the gay community of liberal 1920s Spain, Don Joséis the central character in the Secret Opera reworking ofBizet’s tragic opera. Sexually confused and dominated bythe strictly religious upbringing imposed by his mother, he has come from the country toSeville to get a glimpse of the young man he has idolised from afar, the dancer, Carmen. This intimate production shows Bizet’s tale of love, passion, jealousy and anger between men.Performed in the round, with the audience on scene and free to move around the action, SecretOpera will give an unforgettable and heart-rending experience to all. Sung in English with pianoaccompaniment by Andrew Charity. The cast includes both operatic and musical theatre actors.

This Last Tempest…Uninvited Guests & FuelTheatre Royal MargateFriday 28th & Saturday 29th NovemberThis Last Tempest is a sequel to The Tempest and begins whereShakespeare left off. Caliban and Ariel are left alone on theenchanted island, watching Prospero’s ship sail over the horizonand out of view.Using the magic of the words Prospero taught them, his formerservants, the “savage” and the “airy spirit” are free to beginagain. They sing and perform wild tempests. As the storms rage

endlessly around them they conjure-up their own brave new world, with new rules for a newsociety – where spirits and monsters are people and inanimate things are alive.Part theatre, part gig, this Last Tempest draws on Uninvited Guests’ collaborative approach todevised theatre. Working with composer and musician Neil Johnson, they fill this strange yetfamiliar island with guitar noise, evocative sounds and sweet airs.

David Gray plus GuestsDe La Warr Pavilion BexhillSaturday 29th NovemberTwenty one years since his first studio album, David Gray’stenth and latest, Mutineers, finds the singer-songwritersteering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating apugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history.David’s past includes the phenomenal success of White Ladder (seven million copies sold),one of three UK number one albums, with records that became ubiquitous and others thatneeded to be sought out to be heard. It’s a richness of terrain and experience over a durationthat belies the traditions and expectations of popular music as surely as the songs themselves. In a vocal shift David finds new sounds instantly audible on Mutineers, an album whoseancestry David sees as more in the neighbourhood of John Martyn’s Small Hours perhaps thanits predecessors in his own catalogue. As well as the change in tone there’s a rising sensethroughout the record, from the opening affirmation of “Back In The World” to its conclusion,of an artist liberated from even his own expectations.

Eric & Little ErnGulbenkian Theatre CanterburyMonday 1st DecemberThis affectionate, moving and fantastically funny homage tothe greatest comedy double act that Britain has ever seenvividly brings back warm memories of a bygone era.Recreating some of the finest moments of Eric and Ernie’s

television and stage performances, cherished moments from the archives sit alongside newmaterial created by the performers. Together they make a brilliant comedy that recreates theall-ages appeal of Morecambe and Wise in their heyday. The show tours for a strictly limited season following an acclaimed West End run, for which itreceived an Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment.‘Ashpitel and Stephens have got the duo’s mannerisms down pat to such a winning extent. Youcould watch this for hours.’ Daily Telegraph

Roy Chubby Brown – Who Ate All The Pies?Theatre Royal MargateThursday 4th DecemberRoy Chubby Brown returns with his meatiest show yet!‘Who Ate All The Pies?’ He’s still rude, he’s still crude andthis time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across thecountry. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing hisoutlandish views on news, women and gender, sailing soclose to the mark, even the most seasoned of fans will be left gob-smacked! As politicallyincorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this liveperformance is the only place to catch the flamboyant comedian!

March sees The Unthanks at Revealtion St Marys Ashford There are no easy one-liners to capture who or what The Unthanks are…..You might find them singing in a Tyneside folk club one night, and playing to 2000 Londoners the next, having performed to a primary school in the afternoon.

This is what actor Martin Freeman thinks.. “All I can say about the Unthanks is that they make my heart beat faster, or smile a lot, or cry. They mean it. And not in some dreary ‘authentic’ way that feels like a penance for the listener, but just natural. They sing and play what the hell they like, and if you’ve heard nicer harmonies this year, I may call you a liar. I’m glad to be around at the same time as them.”

Praise indeed Dr Watson

Hailing from Mid Kent and fronted by vocalist, Rosie Horne, who is a familiar face on the Country Music circuit and a renowned singer/songwriter in her own right, the band line up also includes guitarist Dave John Ross, bassist Peter Bolton and Lewis Clark on drums. Although predominantly Country, Rock and Blues, this power-house 4-piece outfit delight in taking hits from varying genres of the last several decades and firmly placing their own unique stamp on them. Influences come from the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Wynonna Judd and The Allman Brothers, to name but a few. The power-trio of instruments behind Rosie’s powerful voice gives this band a raw and hard-hitting edge, making up for even the most overly-produced of tracks that BLOODSTONE BLUE execute in their own stripped-down guitar, bass and drums format. As well as the laid-back Country and Blues that is featured in their set list, some of the more surprising covers presented by this band are songs such as the 80s classic anthems, Died in Your Arms Tonight (Cutting Crew), I Want To Know What Love Is’ (Foreigner) and ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ (Def Leppard). This band is certainly prepared to go off the beaten track and with Rosie’s renowned voice, sass and showmanship, backed up by a power-house trio of a band, BLOODSTONE BLUE aims to please, so be sure to check them out at a venue near you soon.

The Bad Pandas: far from endangered2014 has been quite a year for Kent based 5 piece Bad Pandas. “If you consider that we had our first practice together in September 2013… then the amount of noise about the band has been amazing” Lead singer Benji North looks like your archetypal rock front man; long hair, tattooed and rakish, he could easily be from a classic rock outfit from yesteryear!

But the truth be known, rock is only one aspect of the Bad Pandas repertoire. Something that Benji is keen to point out, “The songs that we perform are so eclectic that it always keeps the audience guessing as to what they will hear next. it could be punk, grunge, disco or pop”. It’s this diversity which, along with their high energy pro performances and razor sharp sound that has catapulted

the Pandas into the forefront of the Kent cover scene.

“The big difference was when we brought keyboards into the band” Benji reflects on the time before pandas. “Chris

(Burgess -drums) had started playing with Graham (Webb-guitar), Jon (Simpson -Bass) and me after our last band broke up, but we couldn’t get anything going and we were close to jacking it in… It was then we decided on a change of direction, away from classic rock and open our music up to a wider audience” So the guys advertised for a keyboard player. Enter Nick Bennett. “ We got together for a jam, and it just clicked. We pretty much nailed the songs in one or two takes and we haven’t looked back”

The band are now in high demand. Three pubs have asked them for residencies, they have been asked to play Halloween gigs by 6 different pubs, and their schedule is full ‘til the end of this year. “We’re inundated with gigs next year too, and we’re learning a lot of new material so we can keep the set fresh and varied” The Bad Pandas are making sure they play in as many pubs as possible next year, and all over the region. You can find them on Facebook or go to www.thebadpandas.com to check out their music and their gig calendar. From being close to extinction, it looks like, if Pandas want to flourish…. they have to be Bad.

Now gigging..

The sound of classic Americana, from the heart of Kent

One of the most enduring and interesting genres in the USA is still somewhat of a mystery to the majority of music listeners here in the UK, yet without realising it, we all probably know and enjoy some of the better known exponents, from Bob Dylan through Jackson Browne to Wilco and Ryan Adams. That genre is Americana, or alt-country as it is sometimes known - and right here in Kent there’s a band called Mashville that is trail blazing it’s way through the local music scene across the South East with some of the finest live music around.

Mashville was formed in late 2012, after an initial couple of experimental rehearsal sessions where no-one really knew each other. With a gradually dawning realisation that as musicians the original four musicians shared a love of American roots music and brought an unusual combination of influences and styles that just worked together so much, a band with a distinctive sound was born. The band name was taken from an Alabama 3 track - another great British band best known for the theme to The Sopranos.

The band is made up of Graham Loft on vocals and rhythm guitar, Berin Riley on lead guitar, Hedgy Murrin on drums and ‘Pic’ Hayes has recently stepped in on bass duties for original bassist Steve Vass who has stepped down due to other commitments. The band’s music is a unique crossover of roots, blues, country and rock - plenty of twang (but not really country!), plenty of power (but not all rock!), plenty of subtle dynamics and above all, as fans who have seen the band will testify - great instinctive musicianship with real imagination and originality. The band has attracted radio play in the UK and across the Channel in the Netherlands where they and the album were featured and CD’s given out as prizes in a radio competition.

The band has been gigging extensively in 2014 and will be rehearsing in December for their follow up album which is scheduled to be recorded in January 2015.

Gig dates, music and more info on the band can be found at www.mashvilleband.com
