Business Matters

November 2012

Letting Small Business

Shine

Later this month, the Greece

Chamber of Commerce will gather for

our 4th Annual Small Business Awards

Luncheon. We started this back in

2009 when we gave out the 1st Small

Business of the Year Award to West

Fire Systems. Even though we already

had one major awards ceremony, we

felt that it was appropriate to add

one dedicated only to the

contributions small businesses make

to our community! Last year we added the Microenterprise

category to make sure we also recognize smaller businesses

who are making a big impact.

Small business means big business in America. Listen to

these statistics from the SBA:

In 2009 there were approximately 27.5 million business in

the US

Small firms with 500 employees or less represent 99.9% of

those 27 million businesses.

Firms with fewer than 500 employees accounted for 65

percent (or 9.8 million) of the 15 million net new jobs

(gains minus losses) between 1993 and the 2009.

Small Businesses employ just over half of all private

sector employees.

This year we are honoring 6 local businesses who are

finalists for either the Small Business of the Year Award or the

Microenterprise of the Year award. Together they employ

hundreds of local people and create millions of dollars of

revenue for our local economy.

For Small Business of the Year, our Finalists are:

American Custom Exteriors, Inc.

Caring for Cats

Deborah L. Fox, DDS

For Microenterprise of the Year, our Finalists are:

Bansbach Zoghlin, P.C.

Benefit Representatives of America

The Victors Gymnastics

Past winners for our Small Business of the Year

Award are: West Fire Systems (2009), Pet$aver Healthy Pet

Superstore (2010), Solutions Studio and Spa (2011). The

inaugural winner of our Microenterprise of the Year was

Sanger Family Dental.

I hope you will consider joining us on Friday,

November 16th, 2012 for our 4th Annual Awards luncheon to

honor all of these Finalists! You can RSVP by calling the

Chamber at 227-7272 or sending an email to Sue Edgett at

[email protected]

If you’ve never been to the luncheon, you’re in for a

wonderful afternoon. You’ll see a sneak peek at each business

through a video profile and have the opportunity to meet

many other business people from our community. I hope to

see you there. Congratulations to all of our finalists!

Recommended Reading... It’s Not About the Coffee: Lessons

on Putting People First from a Life

at Starbucks

I n his book, It’s Not About the

Coffee, Howard Behar, former

president of Starbucks

International, talks about 10

leadership principles (none of them

being about coffee): the importance of

putting people before profits, treating

staff as people, not labor costs, viewing customers as

people, not sources of revenue, and the roles all of this

played in growing Starbucks into a world-renowned

brand. Building trust, facing challenges, daring to dream,

wearing one hat, thinking independently, being

accountable, and taking action are just some of the

concepts that made Starbucks a customer experience far

beyond any coffee shop. Behar explains that a company

must provide an excellent product, the company vision

has to be both inspirational and meaningful, finances

must be handled correctly and responsibly, but the people

are the key to all of it. People are much bigger than the

company’s product or service. This is a fascinating book

about leadership and what it takes to create the ultimate

customer experience. – Terry Hogan, Director of Marketing

5 Questions With… Michael Perotto, Co-owner/Funeral Director of Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home

How long has Bartolomeo & Perotto been serving the Greece/Rochester Community? 1922

You are a long time member of the Greece Chamber of Commerce. How has Chamber membership

benefited your business? 1998 I think. The chamber has helped us to meet and form relationships that

otherwise may never have happened if we were not members.

What types of things do you do to support within the community? Volunteer and/or financial support at the Northwest YMCA,

Greece Chamber of Commerce, Greece Rotary, Greece Storm Lacrosse, Aquinas Institute, Unity Health Foundation, St.

Lawrence School & Journey Home

Tell us about one or two unique services that you offer to your clients? Two services that are unique to the families Bartolomeo

& Perotto serves are our Cremation with Confidence Program and our staff is trained as Funeral Celebrants.1) Our 10 step

program for cremation was the first of its kind in our area. It totally guarantees not only transparency to our families that we

serve but insures that their loved ones are cared for with dignity and respect. 2) As more and more people for whatever

reason have moved away from religion the staff at Bartolomeo & Perotto has responded to this cultural shift. Our entire staff

of licensed funeral directors are trained celebrants and can step in to assist families in creating a meaningful service for their

loved ones.

Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home is very supportive of the veteran’s community. What programs do you have in place for

veterans? Our veterans and current in-service personnel are our true modern day heroes. Bartolomeo & Perotto has always

supported them as a way to say thank you for all that you do or have done. Currently we have three major campaigns to

support our in-service military personnel. Stockings for Soldiers, Cell Phones for Soldiers and Valentines for Soldiers. All

three involve the entire community. Members of the community will donate items for all three programs. The funeral

home’s role is to identify troops from all around the world who are serving. When searching, we prefer to locate soldiers

with ties to our local community. Bartolomeo & Perotto then orchestrates and pays for the shipping cost to get these items

mailed. Our Stocking for Soldiers program last year affected 900 in the military. This year our goal is to be able to say thank

you to over 2000 soldiers for Christmas. Upon the death of a veteran, we assist the family in acquiring Veterans

Administration death benefits. Examples of these are veteran’s markers, burial cost reimbursement and military honors for their funeral service.

Packing Healthy Lunches A well-balanced lunch should include all 5 food

groups: a lean protein, a whole grain, a fruit, a

vegetable, and a source of calcium. Whether it’s a sandwich, leftovers, or a salad, a well-balanced lunch will keep

you energized for the day. Here are some tips for packing a nutritious lunch: 1) Lean protein: Choose lean meat

such as turkey, chicken breast, lean roast beef, or lean ham. Peanut butter, hummus, and bean spreads are also

great options for protein. Limit bologna, salami, chicken, and turkey rolls: the proportion of fat to lean protein is

higher. 2) Whole Grain: Make a sandwich with whole grain bread, a mini wheat bagel, pita, or flat bread. Add

brown rice to barley to hot meals and soups. While grains will not only supply you with but will also keep you

feeling full longer. 3)Fruit: Grab a piece of fresh fruit such as an apple, pear, banana, blueberries, or grapes. Try to

vary the colors of fruit you eat daily to consume a variety of nutrients. Choose those in season to keep the cost

down. 4)Vegetable: Raw vegetables have not lost any nutrients by being cooked and are an easy item to add to

your lunch. Cut and prepare carrot sticks, celery sticks, and cucumber slices the night before. If you want to add a

fat free dip to serve with your veggies. Also add lettuce, tomato, and onion to sandwiches . Try vegetable-based

soup, such as tomato made with skim milk, Manhattan clam chowder, squash soup, or a vegetarian vegetable soup.

5)Dairy: Low fat or fat-free milk, reduced fat cheese or yogurt are all great sources of calcium. 6) Food Safety:

Insulated bags are good investments if you plan on bringing your lunch, as well as thermos bottles, plastic

containers and ice packs. These items will help keep your food cold, while preserving freshness. Do your part in

keeping the break room clean; clean up spills and dispose of old food. By doing so you are ensuring food surfaces

and appliances you use to store and prepare your food are free from harmful bacteria.

Packing a healthy lunch is more nutritious, and also saves you time, money and calories. Be sure to drink water

throughout the day and bring enough fruits and vegetables for snacks as needed.
