This project was made unique by involving older local people and interacting with them through memories and of course, those WW1 songs. National Curriculum

! These have been derived from ‘The 2014 Primary National Curriculum in England- Looking particularly at the Key stage 2 Framework. They are areas we felt we could explore through our theme ‘We will remember…’

! English- KS2

! Composition- draft and write by: composing and rehearsing sentences orally (including dialogue), progressively building a varied and rich vocabulary and an increasing range of sentence structures (English Appendix 2); organising paragraphs around a theme in narratives, creating settings, characters and plot.

! Comprehension. ! Maths- KS2 ! Possible areas of coverage: Number, Measure and Statistics.

!History- KS2 - A local history study: a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality – see also our War Memorial Notes – visit www.ourmemories.org.uk -A study of an aspect or theme in British History that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066: changes in an aspect of social history; a significant turning point in British History. !Geography- KS2 -Locational knowledge- locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe etc, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities. -Geographical skills and fieldwork- use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied; use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world

National Curriculum ! Design and Technology- KS2 - Design- use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups. - Make- select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks. - Evaluate- evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work. ! Computing- KS2 - use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked and be discerning in evaluating digital content. - use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact. ! Science- Ks2 - Sound: identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating. - recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear - find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it - find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it

Recounts

! Learn a recount of a British soldiers trench experience- use actions, text maps and drama (in the style of Pie Corbett) to internalise the text. ! Re-write this recount from German soldier perspective. ! Look at letters to and from soldier's and their families- again use similar techniques to support children to write their own versions, exploring formal/informal language.

Historical Stories

! Use the text ‘War Game’ by Michael Foreman to help create characters and hot-seat (see resources). ! Look at war propaganda and persuasive language. ! Examine postcards- explore informal/formal language. Children create their own. See www.cwgc.org.uk to find details of the 67,000 Commonwealth Civilian who died. It’s easy to search.

! Visit local memorials ! Use local archives to find Roll of Honour ! Invite locals in to re-tell their own stories ! Maps of the area from 1914 – 1918 to compare to current maps of the area. (Geography) ! School records, diaries etc from 1914 ! Local directory to find jobs of local people.

! Timeline of WW1 events ! The role of women- impact on current society ! The role of children (what do local school records show? How did they contribute to the war efforts?) ! ! Use atlases to locate Europe on a world map. ! Use an atlas to locate countries in Europe involved in WW1. (History) ! Use google maps (including tablet version) to zoom in on prominent WW1 locations to look at physical features.

Geography – Geographical skills and knowledge

! Maps of the area from 1914 - 1918 to compare to current maps of the area. (History) ! Use google maps (including tablet version) to zoom in on prominent WW1 locations to look at changes to human features and land use. ! Compass points- plot the movements of the British troops.(Maths-position and movement)

! Listen to different aircraft sound clips- which sounds are highest / lowest? (Music)

Computing

! Use internet search engines to research key figures in WW1, e.g. Franz Ferdinand. ! Use Morfo (iPad App) to create key figure WW1 speech, using research collected. ! Use Morfo (iPad App) to create recount character presentation. (Literacy) ! Collate information into Powerpoint presentation.
