CONGRATULATIONS!Texas Education Agency accountability ratings released July 31 list Patton Elementary as an “Exemplary” school. Congratulations and thanks go to students, faculty, staff, parents and community partners for their hard work and support during the 2008-2009 school year!

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETYAISD students head back to school on Monday, August 24. We appreciate your help in keeping our students and families safe by utilizing these driving practices:

• Observe the posted 20-mph speed limits and flashing yellow lights in the school zone areas. A ticket from the Austin Police Department for this speeding violation carry hefty fines, beginning at $178.

• The school crossing guards are responsible for stopping traffic to allow pedestrians to cross, but not for traffic direction. Please use courtesy and patience with other drivers as you pass through these busy areas in the morning and afternoon.

• Students are taught how to cross streets at crosswalks and to use sidewalks at all times while walking to school, but please keep a watchful eye out for those who forget.

• Avoid use of electronic distractions, such as cell phones or texting devices, while driving in areas where children are present.

After over a year of protests from Westcreek and continuances from the owner and his agent, the property at 6110 Hill Forest was changed back to single-family, low-density zoning in the Oak Hill FLUM (Future Land Use Map). At the City Council Meeting on July 23rd, the City Council finally heard the item again. Mr. Mickey Bentley (the owner’s representative) had requested another continuance based on the owner’s (Mr. Bomar’s) health. (The previous hearing was continued due to Mr. Bentley being ill.) Mr. Bentley then suggested to one of the City Council members that they were now interested in maybe trying to sell the land to the City for

Spores.produced.on.infected.trees.also.spread.oak.wilt..Red.oaks.play.a.key.role.in.the.establishment.of.new.infection.centers...Fungal.mats.form.beneath.the.bark.of.certain.diseased.red.oaks.in.late.fall.and.especially.in.spring,.but.do.not.form.on.live.oaks...Fungal.mats.are.most.commonly. formed.on.standing. trees,.but. they.can.also.develop.on.logs,.stumps,.and.fresh.firewood.cut.from.diseased.red.oaks...Individual.fungal.mats.produce.spores.for.only.a.few.weeks..The.fruity.odor.of.fungal.mats.attracts.many.kinds.of.sap-feeding.insects,.the.most.important.of.which.are.believed.to.be.oak.bark.beetles...Sticky.spores.of.the.fungus,.which.develop.on.the.mycelial.mats,.become.attached.to.the.beetles...Although.oak.bark.beetles.do.not.require.open.wounds.to.transmit.the.fungus,.the.beetles.may.fly.to.other.oak.trees.and.feed.on.the.sap.flow.from.fresh.wounds.on.healthy.trees,.both.red.oaks.and.live.oaks,.transmitting.spores.of.the.oak.wilt.fungus..In.this.way,.oak.wilt.may.be.spread.over.distances.of.at.least.several.hundred.feet...Oaks.are.particularly.susceptible.to.wound. infections. in. spring.and.summer,.when.sap.flow.from.wounds.is.greatest.
