Bruckner & the Renaissance

Levens Choir with

the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble

St George’s Church Kendal

Saturday July 9th 7:30pm Levens Choir’s celebratory 40th anniversary season will draw to a close with a spectacular concert of music from 19th century Germany and Renaissance Italy when the choir collabo-rates with the English Corne and Sackbut Ensemble. The resonant acous c of St George’s Church will ring to the sound of music by Anton Bruckner alongside masters of the Italian Renaissance. The unaccompanied motets by Bruckner are well known and popular amongst choral sing-ers and their audiences. Less well known but even more spectacular are the accompanied ones and when joined by the trombones of this celebrated ensemble will undoubtedly ‘raise the roof’! The sackbut players of ECSE are all equally at home playing trombone, and as individuals are regularly invited to perform with many of the leading UK and European orchestras. In a first for both Levens Choir and ECSE we are fortunate to have them perform on both sackbut and ‘Roman c’ trombones of the Bruckner period – no mean feat, even for these professional players. The second half of the concert will feature the corne s of the ensemble in music of the Re-naissance by Claudio Monteverdi, Tomas de Victoria and Giovanni Gabrieli. Described as being ‘as loud as a trumpet and as agile as a violin’ the corne ’s bright and resonant notes will sound wonderful in St George’s. In addi on to playing on their own the corne s will resound in music from Monteverdi’s famous ‘Vespers’ of 1610 and in Gabrieli’s ‘In Ecclesiis’ for soloists and double choir. ECSE is a virtuoso period instrument ensemble which has appeared in concerts and fes -vals world-wide and has a host of celebrated recordings to its name. The group’s appear-ance in Kendal with Levens Choir will be its first visit to Cumbria as an ensemble, which both Levens Choir and ECSE are equally delighted about. Tickets cost £12 (no charge for students and schoolchildren) are available from Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, Highgate, Kendal LA9 4HE Tel: 01539 725133. Tickets sold on the Brewery Arts Centre’s website or over the phone will incur a £1.50 booking fee.
