Dear Friendship Families,
I hope you are having a very happy new year! The students resumed their studies last week and there is much anticipation for the upcom-ing events throughout the winter and spring terms. Our next event, on Saturday, January 17 at 1 p.m., is the “Friendship Family Movie Matinee” activity where we will watch Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted at the Warch Cam-pus Center Cinema. Popcorn, movie candy, and juice will be pro-vided. If you do plan to go, please let your student(s) know so they can plan to meet you there. No RSVP is required. Two other very large events going on soon are the annual Lunar New Year party
(2/21) and the Lawrence Interna-tional Cabaret (4/11 and 4/12). These two events are some of the most exciting of the year and our students work hard to make the events both educational and cul-turally interesting.
The Lunar New Year party on Sat-urday, February 21 will start at 7 p.m. with a show featuring East Asian dance performances by guest troupes, followed by a cul-tural expo with many activities and games presented by various stu-dent groups at Lawrence including Asia-A, Chinese Student Associa-tion, Cultural Food Club, Korean Culture Club, Lawrence Interna-tional, study abroad returnees, Vietnamese students, and more! There will also be light hors d’oeu-vres and refreshments available. This event is free and open to the public. No ticket or RSVP is neces-sary and it is a great event for chil-dren of all ages as well as adults!
The 39th annual Cabaret will be held this year! This fantastic inter-national variety show is truly a Lawrence institution and not to be missed. This year, two perfor-mances will be held at the Stans-bury Theatre on Lawrence’s Cam-pus. The performances are sched-uled for Saturday, April 11 (6:30 p.m.) and Sunday, April 12 (3:00 p.m.) In the past the students have hosted a reception after one of the performances, so I will let you know more about this as soon as the Lawrence International (LI) student organization finalizes the details. Also, please note that chil-dren of friendship families are in-
vited to participate in the fashion show portion of the event and they can represent their LU sib-ling’s culture, or another culture in which they are interested. This event is ticketed and friendship families will receive a discounted rate. Details about tickets and the reception will be released near the end of this term.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all once again for your willingness to spend time and share experiences with the Law-rence international students. While being far from home is at times challenging, I know having a family resource in the U.S. is great-ly valued by our students and they enjoy the relationships cultivated with you and your family mem-bers. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, stories or photos you’d like to share, please feel free to contact me at any time: [email protected] or 920-832-6509. Warm regards,
Leah McSorley Director, International Student Services Lawrence University

Though its exact history is a little bit muddled, Valentine’s Day is generally
celebrated around the world as a day of love, companionship and in some
countries, a day of simple friendship. Some send out handmade cards, choc-
olates or candies as a way of showing affection and care. Typically, restau-
rants and wedding planners are also very busy around this time of the year!
