BENEFITS OF AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCEWith the growth of international trade and multinationalcompanies, it is critical for engineering students to gaininternational experience and develop intercultural skills, such ascross-cultural communication, critical thinking, empathy, andtolerance for ambiguity. You are able to develop professionalskills in a multicultural setting, as well as deepen yourknowledge of other countries and cultures. This can betterprepare you to interact with people from backgrounds differentfrom your own. Education abroad may be in the form of a studyabroad program, research experience, internship abroad, or anengineering service project in another country.

ACADEMIC & TIMING CONSIDERATIONSBegin planning early, particularly if you want to go abroad for asemester or year. Summers and J-terms are more flexible. Youcan use study abroad credit for major, technical, unrestrictedand humanities and social science electives. Approvals are givenon a case-by-case basis through your department. As early asyour first year, you should meet with an ISO Education AbroadAdvisor, as well as your department’s designated study abroadadvisor, to discuss timing. Consider what requirements you cantake abroad. What courses could you move around? Could youfulfill the same requirements abroad that you would be takingon-Grounds? There may be a time that is more flexible for goingabroad, or you may need to map out exactly the same coursesyou would be taking here. It depends on your major and whereyou are with your requirements.
