OVERZICHT WEEK 19
OVERVIEW WEEK 19
Last week, the incidence of visits to the general practitioner (including contacts by phone) for influenza-like illness remained stable at 91 con-tacts per 100,000 inhabitants. However, the incidence slightly in-creased in the age group 65 years and over in Wallonia and Brussels and in the age group 15-64 years in Brussels. The incidence remained stable or decreased in all other groups. In the week of May 4th - 10th 2020, only 1 respiratory sample was avail-able for testing. The sample was negative for SARS-CoV-2. Between March 16th and April 26th 2020 (weeks 12-17), 7507 addi-tional deaths due to all causes were observed (including 338 additional deaths in the 15-64 year age group, 3193 additional deaths in the 65-84y age group and 3986 additional deaths in the age group over 85 years) compared to what is ex-pected on the basis of the last 5 years. The excess mortality for weeks 14, 15 and 16 equals 81%, 95% and 71% respectively.

SEVERITY INDICATORS AMONG PATIENTS HOSPITAL-
IZED FOR FLU
Registered by the 6 sentinel hospitals
The surveillance ran from week 2 to week 16. The number of hospital admissions for flu with certain severe complica-tions such as ARDS (acute respiratory failure) was at the start of the epi-demic slightly higher compared to previous years. Otherwise there were no indications of increased se-verity this winter. Among the positive tests, 93% were positive for influenza A (66% A(H1N1), 31% A(H3N2) and 3% A not subtyped) and 7% positive for influ-enza B (100% B|Victoria, 0% B|Yam-agata and 0% B no lineage).

How to read this graph? When the number of deaths per day (orange line) exceeds the upper or lower limits of the deaths predicted by the modelling (grey dashed lines), there is a significant excess or under-mortality in this age group. The green curve corresponds to the daily number of influenza syndromes (network of sentinel GPs).
