Dear Friends in Christ,

I was born and raised in a Methodist family. We weren’t an overly religious family. We went to Church services

every Sunday. My siblings and I attended Sunday school and I even went through the Confirmation process in the

Methodist Church. Though for the life of me, I never really “got it”.

It wasn’t until my Pastor, a former Catholic, who left the Church, was preaching concerning communion and how

the communion bread was a symbol of the Body of Christ and that all were welcomed, unlike in the Catholic

Church, who choose to exclude those who weren’t in “full communion with the Church.” This got me to thinking,

why would something that was supposed to symbolize unity become so exclusionary?

At the time, I didn’t have an answer, so I continued believing in a symbol comprised of leavened bread and Welch’s

Grape Juice, until a little while later when some things happened in the Church Leadership locally and in my own

personal life that caused me to begin to question everything I have been taught. I began to branch out on my own,

visiting my friend’s churches and trying to find God’s direction in my life, even to the point of asking if there was a

God and if there was, does He really care which church I went to if at all?

I had pretty much given up, focusing on school, work, and just being a teenager. I started dating a girl I had met at

work and things were getting serious between us. She was a cradle Catholic and attended Mass every Sunday, CYO,

mission trips. She invited me to come with her to Mass one weekend. I went, if nothing more than to satisfy a curi-

osity I had always had, concerning the ritual in the Catholic Church. The first part seemed somewhat familiar to me,

readings from the Bible and some hymns. I was a little let down at first until the Liturgy of the Eucharist when the

Priest began to pray the words of concertation over the bread and wine. What had always been a symbol become

so much more and I could tell that there was something special going on! What was once bread and wine, were

before my, eyes being made into the Body and Blood of Jesus. I knew it instantly!

From that day forward I began to attend Mass every week and even went to CYO. I knew I wanted more, I wanted

to be able to partake in His Body and His Blood. I decided to attend RCIA my freshman year of college and was

welcomed into the Church the Following Easter Vigil. I haven’t looked back since!

For everyone beginning the journey of learning about the Catholic faith in our weekly Wednesday Introduction to

Catholicism, know that you’re in my prayers! For those of you on the fence about beginning, please reach out!

The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in

many ways similar to our struggles today as Chris-

part Bible study, learn how St. Paul addressed these

struggles by introducing the Corinthians to God’s

greatest gift–the Eucharist.

ProLife Activities

YOU are invited to join other Christians throughout the Upstate to take part in our local 40 Days for Life

effort from September 22 through October 31. 40 Days for Life is a prayer campaign to end abortion. This

prayer campaign is initiated and organized at the grassroots level in communities throughout the nation and

abroad. Prayer, fasting and public vigil at the abortion facility are key components. The National Organiza-

tion requires anyone participating in a campaign sign a promise to conduct themselves in a peaceful, respect-

ful manner. Many believe the Holy Spirit is using this movement to end abortion and at the same time bring

people of many faiths together.

One way to help Jesus is to pray for the least and most vulnerable of us all, the unborn. It is not easy. Many

people are afraid to go to the abortion clinic to pray for these tiny babies. Jesus says, “Be not afraid.”

The backbone of the whole pro-life ministry is prayer. No Crisis Pregnancy Center, Sidewalk Ministry, Post

Abortion Ministry, or Pregnancy Home can exist without our prayers. Will you join us in praying outside the

abortion facility during the next 40 Days for Life campaign starting September 23rd?

Be the ONE to make this a priority in your life and join us. Please visit: www.40daysforlife.com/greenville

and www.facebook.com/40daysgreenville or contact Ingrid Ireland 864-329-0044 or Valerie Baronkin 864-

297-8838 or Judy Masterson 864-506-0964.

Help to spread the word to others about this important life-saving effort.

40 Days for Life Kickoff Rally – Tuesday, Sept 21st, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, parking lot of Piedmont Women's

Center, 1143 Grove Rd. Guest speakers: Sr. Virginia Joy, Sisters of Life and Fr. Scott Francis Binet; For Life

Praise Band will provide the music. Parking is at the empty shops next door and at Grove Road Baptist

Church. Call Ingrid at 864-329-0044.

Life Chain - Sunday, Oct 3rd , 2:30 – 3:30 pm, Woodruff Road, Greenville and different locations in SC.

Please join others across the country for this peaceful, prayerful, public witness for the sanctity of human life.

Your church is assigned the same place on the route as last year. Call Ingrid at 864-329-0044.

Rosaries for Life - Pray the rosary during the 40 Days for Life for the intentions to end abortion, the con-

version of our society and for an end to other assaults on human Life. Turn in your counts at your local par-

ish or email your count each week to [email protected].

On Saturday, September 18, pro-life Americans throughout the country

will gather at the gravesites of aborted babies and other memorial sites

dedicated in their honor for the ninth annual National Day of Remem-

brance for Aborted Children.

Solemn vigils will be held at these sites to commemorate the more than

60 million children who have lost their lives to legal abortion since 1973,

and to remind our society of the humanity of the unborn child. Please

join us at 9a at the Memorial to the Unborn on our campus. Questions?

Celebrating the Liturgical Life of the Church

14 September: Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast com-

memorates three historical events: finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena; dedi-

cation of the churches on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and

restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by Heraclius II. After the Resurrection,

Jewish and Roman authorities hid the Holy Sepulchre, Christ's tomb. Earth was

mounded up and pagan temples built on top. Tradition said Christ’s Cross had been

hidden nearby. Saint Helena (Constantine’s mother) was divinely inspired to travel

to Jerusalem in 326 to find the True Cross. Three crosses were eventually found.

Helena and Saint Macarius, bishop of Jerusalem, devised an experiment to deter-

mine which was the True Cross. The crosses were taken to a woman near death;

when she touched the True Cross, she was healed. Another tradition says the body

of a dead man was laid upon each cross. The True Cross restored the man to life.

Constantine constructed churches at the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary. Those

churches were dedicated and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was celebrated. The feast slowly

spread, until, by the year 720, it was universal. In the 7th century, Persians conquered Jerusalem and captured

the Cross. Heraclius II defeated them and restored the Cross to Jerusalem. Tradition says he carried the

Cross on his own back, but when he attempted to enter the church on Mount Calvary, a strange force

stopped him. Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem advised him to take off his royal robes and crown and to dress

in penitential garb instead. As soon as Heraclius did so, he was able to carry the Cross into the church. Truly,

this feast day is a celebration of God’s greatest work: His death and resurrection which defeated death and

opened Heaven. Christ transformed an instrument of torture and humiliation into a symbol of salvation. When

Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people, it was a foreshadowing of salvation through Jesus when

He was lifted up on the Cross. To follow Christ we must take up His cross, follow Him and become obedient

until death. We make the Sign of the Cross which helps to fix our minds and hearts on God. At Baptism, we

are sealed with the Sign of the Cross, signifying our redemption and that we belong to Christ. Let us look to

the cross frequently, and realize that when we make the Sign of the Cross we give our entire self to God —

mind, soul, heart, and body. The antiphon for today says it perfectly: “We should glory in the cross of our

Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our resurrection: through him we are saved and made

free.”

Ideas for celebrating this feast day at home:

• Craft project: make and decorate a cross. Children could use popsicle sticks or twigs and twine. Adults

could build a “yard cross” out of big pieces of lumber or tree limbs tied together.

• Place blessed crucifixes prominently throughout your home. Teach children to reverently make the sign of

the cross.

• On this feast, eat red foods like strawberries and tomatoes, and drink red beverages like punch or red

wine, reminding us of the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Eating white foods, like mozzarella cheese, re-

minds us of our baptism (when we were signed with the cross).

• Cook with sweet basil, which tradition says grew over the place where the True Cross was found. Use

wooden skewers and make an appetizer of tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese. The wood of the

skewers reminds us of the cross. Recipe idea here! Or, simply enjoy a dinner of spaghetti with tomato bas-

il sauce and fresh parmesan.

• Make a dessert in the form of a cross, or decorated with a cross. Although usually made on Good Friday,

hot cross buns would also be perfect for today (recipe here).

• Pray the Stations of the Cross. The prayer repeated at each station: We adore You, O Christ, and praise You,

because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

• Available on FORMED is a story about St. Helena and the True Cross: click here.
