Even in Death Including St. Louis Church, School or Saint’s Place in our will is a wonderful way to support ministries that we value, even after God calls us home. Another way to extend the blessing: Let our family know that, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be offered to St. Louis Church, School or Saint’s Place. Upon the death of a loved one, think prayerfully – where would my loved one want contribu-tions to be made in his or her memory? A beautiful way to let folks know what our loved one believed to be truly important, what we learned from them regarding what is truly important!
THIS WEEK’S TITHING WILL SUPPORT Judicial Process Commission
NEXT WEEK’S TITHING WILL SUPPORT St. Andrew’s Food Cupboard
St. Andrew’s Food Cupboard, 890 Portland Avenue, serves an area of highly concentrated poverty in the 14621 Northeast quadrant of Rochester. St. Andrew’s mission is to provide the best nutrition they can offer. They also provide diapers, some baby needs, and include toiletries with each household order. Clients are offered recipe and food handling advice and access to free clothing, coupons, used books and magazines, and phone usage. Furniture assistance through the adjoining St. Vincent dePaul Society is also available. Most importantly, they try to build relationships with those who come in need.
To learn more about St. Andrew’s Food Cupboard, please contact Margaret Oberst at 338-1764 (Cupboard), 254-3093 (home) or email [email protected]. Volunteers come in on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday from 9:00 – 11:30 am.
Ending the Year Well We are deeply thankful for every contribution to St. Louis of Pittsford, no matter how large or small; we deeply appreciate your generosity and faith-filled commitment to our ministries! Many people choose to make year-end gifts and donations. If you do, in addition to a contribution to the parish, please seri-ously consider a generous contribution to our Catholic Ministry Appeal (CMA) if you have not yet made a pledge. We really would love to reach our goal before Epiphany - it would be an Epiphany! Here are two important things to keep in mind: If your intention is to make a stock donation, please contact
Shannon Toot at the Ministry Center, 586-5675, for further details.
Per IRS regulations, any contributions for 2017 will need to be received by December 31, 2017.

CHRIST IN THE WORD
Increase Your Word Power
Typology. Classically, typology refers to reading the Old
Testament in light of the New: seeing in a person or event
in the Old Testament a foreshadowing of something
revealed or fulfilled in the New Testament. The Easter
Vigil readings provide a great example. 1st reading:
Creation. It foreshadows the New Creation. 2nd Reading:
The Sacrifice of Isaac. Isaac is a type for understanding
Christ and his sacrifice. 3rd reading: Crossing the Red Sea.
Jesus’ Baptism as our passing through the waters to a new
life. Then at the Easter Vigil there are 2 readings from
Isaiah. But why talk about the Easter Vigil now?
Isaiah used a typological reading even before the New
Testament. He looked back to captivity in Egypt to
understand the Babylonian Exile. He saw in the Exodus
a way to understand and name what God was about to do:
lead the Exiles home.
But don’t misunderstand! The point is NOT simply that
history repeats itself! Our conviction is that mighty acts
and involvement of God in human events follow a
consistent pattern because God is consistent, always true
to the divine purpose. God is always a creator, creating
ever anew, counter balance to our destructive proclivities.
God is one who redeems, ever turning sacrifice into a
journey through death to life. God’s will is always toward
leading people out of slavery, the state we find ourselves
in on account of sin, into freedom.
The take home? Go back to our reading from Isaiah today.
In quiet prayer, search. How can I apply Isaiah’s message
of hope to the exiles to my own life? Through whom or
how might God be speaking a word of comfort to me?
What are some of the valleys, some of the mountains in
my life, and how might God be smoothing a path? How
might God be shepherding me and leading me with care?
(Music lovers: prayerfully listen to part I of Handel’s
Messiah)
Time Beyond Time
The end of one church year and the beginning of another
always include an invitation to contemplate the time
beyond time, the Eschaton, or end of the world as we
know it; the beginning of eternity. When our second
reading was written, many Christians were wondering
why Christ hadn’t returned yet, to inaugurate the last
days. Peter goes back to a message from psalm 90: “For
a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it
passes by, or as a watch in the night.” Yes, eternity is hard
to wrap our minds around. Don’t pray the psalms much?
Try praying psalm 90 (the only psalm attributed to Moses)
a few times this week. Did you know O God, Our Help in
Ages Past is based on psalm 90?
In The Beginning
‘Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to
start …’. True enough. So the Old Testament begins: ‘In
the beginning…’. Mark, the first Gospel written, opens
with: ‘The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the
Son of God.’ But not every evangelist had the same idea.
Mark begins with John the Baptist, and Jesus’ baptism.
Soon we’ll be hearing from Luke and Matthew, who felt
they should start with Jesus’ genealogy, and his birth.
John is more like Genesis… ‘In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.’ He goes back to before creation. Where might you
begin, sharing the story of Jesus; who he is for you, who
he can be for everyone?
1st Reading: Isaiah 40:1 – 5, 9 – 11
Give comfort to my people
2nd Reading: 2 Peter 3:8 – 14
We await new heavens and a new earth
Gospel: Mark 1:1 – 8
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
Our Weekend Scriptures:
Second Sunday of Advent
Extraordinary Ministry This weekend, December 9 & 10, we will commission our new Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and recommission all current ones at each of the Masses.
1st Reading: Isaiah 61:1 – 2a, 10 – 11
A year of favor from the Lord
2nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16 – 24
Rejoice always!
Gospel: John 1:6 – 8, 19 – 28
Testifying to the Light

Third Sunday of Advent
At Home with the Word Start the habit now. During Advent, take a little time sometime during the week to read the readings for the coming Sunday, together with the reflections. Watch what a difference it can make!

Prepare your heart during Advent!
Prepare the Way of the King By Dr. Scott Hahn Dr. Scott Hahn, one of the most eminent Cath-olic theologians in our country today, reveals what scholars now know about the shepherds, the mysterious Magi, and King Herod. Your
Advent journey will take on new meaning as you prepare your heart for the birth of our Lord. This illu-minating presentation is sure to help you grow in ap-preciation of the greatest gift ever given to mankind — Jesus Christ. Find this audio under “Listen”, “Advent and Christmas”.
Come, Lord Jesus By Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C.
These Advent reflections by the abbess of a Poor Clare monastery, an ac-complished spiritual writer, focus our attention on the coming of Jesus into our lives. There is a double movement to this coming; both our active preparation to be ready for him and our patient waiting for the Lord to arrive in his own good time. There is also an art to this simultaneous prepara-
tion and waiting, and no one knows better than beloved
Mother Mary Francis how to encourage us in our attempts to master this art. Find this ebook under “Read”, “Prayer and Devotion”

DO IT TODAY!
There are still many Angels on the trees. Please consider taking one or two Angels. A simple act of kindness, like purchasing a gift, can forever change the lives of others. So many refugees are in need, right here in our community. Every day they struggle to feed their family, heat their apartments and purchase clothing for the family. You can have a meaningful impact on someone’s life this Christmas by taking an Angel home.
Have you forgotten to take an angel from the tree? No problem. Purchase a pair of warm winter gloves for a man or woman, or a small men’s winter jacket, or a pair of men’s boots (size 8 or 9), or a soccer ball or a warm blanket. You do not need an Angel to ensure that a newly arriving refugee is very welcomed in our community.

SAVE THE DATE! The Rochester
Catholic Women’s Conference will
be held at the Aquinas Institute on
March 10, 2018. This year’s theme:
The Power of the Eucharist, Glorifying
God and Sanctifying the World”, was
chosen to correspond with the Diocese

Danielle Bean. Registration is now open. Please visit the
website at Rochestercwc.org/ for conference details.
That Sparks My Interest! Building bridges and discovering ways to work together: these things don't happen on their own. Our diocese has an Office of Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs that is com-mitted to building bridges and working relationships with other faith communities. They are also looking for a lay parishioner in each parish who is interested in interfaith activities. As an Interfaith Parish Liaison, this person would act as a conduit between the diocesan ecumenical and interfaith office and the parish, communicating ongoing interfaith bible studies and meetings as well as publicizing special events. Needed: someone at St. Louis interested in being an Interfaith Liaison, who is a good communicator. It is not at all time consuming. Another positive: liaisons learn a lot about what goes on in the big picture of Rochester interfaith, discovering key events of real interest. Interested? Want to know more? Please contact Fr. Bob
Why go to the gym, when you could use exercise equip-ment at home? Putting it on your calendar, driving there, and the encouragement of others help to make sure you really get the exercise in. Going to Bible study first thing Tuesday morning, 7:30 am in the Manse, could be just as effective in keeping your spiritual life healthy. Join us!

Christmas Pageant
Christmas Blues On Tuesday, December 12 at 7PM we will be holding a ‘Blue
Christmas’ prayer service. Despite the joyful sights and sounds
of Christmas, for many folks, Christmas can surface some deep
sadness. It may be the first Christmas without a loved one. Or
perhaps one very dear to us has been gone for longer, but the
pain of Christmas without them is still there. It may be some
other loss, or broken relationship. Perhaps a loved one is over-
seas, and not able to be ‘home for Christmas’. Come to a
peaceful, prayerful, healing time of prayer this Advent. Pray
with others who know why a bit of blue is part of Christmas
this year. If you were not able to make one of the All Souls
Remembrance Masses, this may be a perfect prayer service for
you. Or perhaps you know someone who could really use some
quiet, peaceful, healing time of prayer. Invite them and bring
them on the 12th. Since it is also the Feast of our Lady of
Guadalupe, you can be sure Mary will be watching over us as
we pray. All are welcome!
LIVING THE GOOD NEWS
Page Nine St. Louis Church, Pittsford, NY December 10, 2017
Fr. Juan and Don Murray are hosting a reflection group called
“Word of Life”, which is part of the Focolare spirituality. You are most welcome to join us on the third Monday of each month at 7:15 pm in the O’Connor Library in the Manse. (This is the brick building to the right of the main church entrance.) (Meets Monday, Dec. 18)
The Word of Life, a sentence of Scripture, is offered monthly as a guide and inspiration for daily life. We read that sentence and the commentary (which is translated into 96 different languages and dialects and reaches more than 14 million people worldwide), and then offer our thoughts about how it applies to our lives. At the start of the next session, we share how we applied that verse in our lives as we encourage each other to imitate Christ.
For more information please email Fr. Juan at [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected].
