Pikopiko: Ki ora This week the children have been writing their observations from our science experiments that we carried out last week. Here are just some of the fabulous writing the children produced; We made a yellow flower turn red. We put red dye in the cup and over night the flower turned red. By Maddison We put water in one glass and we put lemonade in another glass. We put raisins in the water and some in the lemonade. The raisins in the lemonade went up and down but the raisins in the water did not go up. By Jake H Yesterday Pikopiko had an open hour so parents could see how Literacy is taught in our class. I was overjoyed at the number of parents who came along. If you were unable to attend and are interested in coming along or you would like to come along again, let me know and I could organise another session. If you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Have a safe and relaxing weekend. Louise Ritchie

Harakeke: Ai! Well we are still enjoying the flowon effect of our Science Week last week as we observe our beans sprouting, bacteria growing and a wide variety of multicoloured flowers arriving from home! Very exciting keep it up Harakeke! There has been a bit of reading and maths testing happening this week as we prepare to wind up for the term and hit Term 4 running. I have really noticed a lot of selfmotivated and independent, focussed learning happening, nice work Team Harakeke! Yesterday we enjoyed a Cricket session with Tama Walker and I saw a sudden resurgence in the cricket gear at lunchtime after his visit! We have been privileged to have had Alannah Carmichael spending time with us this week as she took part in East Otago High School’s Work Experience week. Thank you for your positivity and willingness to be involved! Last week next week, have a look around and see if you have any rogue reading books lying around at home we will be pleased to take them off your hands! Until next week ... Ilaanilu Lisa Hall

Kiaora from Rata Class, This week we have been finishing off some of our end of term work, including the fantastic science experiments, daily reading, writing and maths as well as cricket and athletics.

For writing this week the children learnt about metaphors and similes. They completed an activity called ‘a Rainbow of Similies’. The task was to colour a rainbow and write similes to describe their colourful rainbows. This lead into some great writing, which we hope to complete this week and publish onto google docs for you to read at home. On Thursday, Tama from Superstarter Cricket came to school to teach the children some cricket skills. There was some fantastic passing and catching skills being displayed, as well as accuracy when throwing the ball at the wicket. We look forward to another visit from Tama in term 4. Thank you Jim and Noni, who are helping out in the senior school teaching athletics. We hope the weather remains warm so we can get outside again next week.

Finally, I couldn’t resist putting this last photo in of Josh and his homework this week. I had to laugh when I saw a note on my table on Thursday morning. It read ‘Sorry Mrs Hurst, but my goat ate my homework!’ Unfortunately or

fortunately he had left his homework outside on the back of the motorbike. When he went back to get it, he found that one of his goats had decided to have a snack! I hope your goat is still ok! One last thing...if you have any spare plastic bags at home that your child could please bring in on Monday. I have several pieces of artwork to go home next week. Good luck to the miniball teams on your final games next week. Have a great weekend! Mrs Hurst

RIMU It feels like the end of third term is coming, as we finish up science experiments checking our predictions on the bounciness of eggs over time with a final egg bounce off had, on Monday. We are very keen to further develop our science process skills next term what a popular unit this has been. We’ve been doing some awesome peer evaluating (constructive critique) in our integrated topic study, over the past few weeks, with a deadline set for some final hour independent inquiries next Wednesday…. Congratulations to Briar, who scored 120/120 on the numeracy test on Monday, too according to her older sister it hasn’t been done in the past to her knowledge, and she had to check up with me whether Briar really had scored that. There were some dramatic improved scores in the class, notably Nicola and Nickolas, Pip, Mya, Hugh, Lucius and Saviour… well done all of you. The basic facts effort is paying off! Cricket with Tama today was brilliant. Good job Harry, Flynn, Anika and Saviour fantastic bowling I spotted….Also awesome to get out in the afternoon with Jim and Noni for athletics training with Rata it’ll be great to be prepared like pros, for senior athletics next term! Finally, a huge congratulations to Mya Hagan who scored a high Credit, in the Australian (ICAS) Writing Competition last term. You are a fantastic writer, Mya!
