Dear Parents
This is the last newsletter from my desk. I have been humbled by the many messages of thanks and
appreciation that so many of you have sent me and I will miss both you and your daughters. I wish
them peace, happiness and success in the future, and I will follow their journeys with keen interest.
The Matric class of 2016 is now anticipating their results which will be released on 30 December.

Headmistress.

I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Mrs Khanya Warren , Mr Digby Ricci, Mrs Gill Murdoch
and Mrs Ann Goncalves for the extensive preparation they did to produce and edit the 2016 edition of
our annual magazine. It is an excellent record of so many outstanding achievements.
Thanks must also go to the PTA team who provide the service which enables the ordering, purchasing
and preparation and distribution of the 2017 textbooks. To underestimate the convenience and the
quality of this service would be a mistake. On your behalf, I thank each of them—Mrs Vida Saayman,
Mrs Paula Morley and the team, for all they have done.
In January, apart from welcoming Mr Thomas into his role as Executive Head, the school will also
welcome new teachers into various positions. I wish each of these individuals a long and happy stay
at Roedean.
At the end of this term, we bid farewell to a number of teachers.
Miss Seipati Mohapi Sesotho Service Provider
Mr Basil MacKenzie History Teacher
Ms Chris Skeef Realm
I thank them for their service to Roedean and the benefits that both their colleagues and the girls de-
rived from their tenure.
Mrs Kathy Aitken is leaving Roedean for family reasons and we will miss her. She is an excellent teach-
er of IT and implemented a number of exciting initiatives to the girls. Mrs Aitken was instrumental in
ensuring the successful implementation of many aspects of the IT Strategy. She has also been responsi-
ble for working behind the scenes in preparing for the new whole school administration system which
will be implemented early in 2017. As a colleague, Kathy Aitken is exemplary and there is no doubt that
she will be deeply missed. We wish her much peace and happiness in the year ahead.
On the occasion of Speech Night, I paid tribute to Mrs Lorraine Riley who has spent nearly 20 years in
the role of HOD—Life Sciences. Mrs Riley is retiring and we wish her rest and enjoyment in her future
endeavours. Lorraine is a much loved colleague and a master teacher. There is no doubt that the ex-
cellent standard of Life Science here at Roedean is directly attributable to her example and the team of
teachers that over the years she has continued to mentor.
I wish you a blessed Christmas and a peaceful 2017.
Warm regards

TPA Silver Adventure Hike
On 21 October, 2016, I embarked on my Silver Adventurous Journey in the beautiful mountains of
Kaapschehoop. My hike began with all the people on the trip talking and mentally preparing for the
days ahead. Once the hike had begun, most of us began to complain about how tired we were and
missed our comfortable beds. Once we had settled, we found our own pace and were able to admire
the amazing scenery ahead. Talking and singing created an atmosphere of friendship and comfort.
Soon, the 9,8Km stretch was over and we had reached the first hut – an old, abandoned train. We had
to cook without an electric stove … not what we really wanted, but we all got through it. Once we had
eaten our dinner, we all went to bed and had a good night’s rest.
It’s 06:00 in the morning and we have two hours to eat, pack, and get ready. Once we had packed, we
began our hike again, briefed before that we were going to hike a ‘slight incline’ … not really what we
expected. Although the hike was tough and hot, the singing, talking, and making up stories made
14km, a stroll in the park. We arrived at an old farmhouse. We cooked, stargazed, told ghost stories,
and went to bed.
Waking up in the morning on the last day made me think how far I had come and how well I had done. Once we had packed and eaten and were ready, we began our descent of the beautiful moun-tains of Kaapschehoop. Seeing horses, bugs, lizards, and talking to friends made our hike a wonderful experience.
Sandy Murray: The President’s Award, Award Leader for Roedean
The President’s Award
We all spoke and made jokes, and, soon, before I knew it, I had completed my Silver Adventurous
Journey. An experience I will never forget. I will never forget the friends I’ve made and the things I have
accomplished. Emma Ghirlanda
Elene Behrens, Helene van Eeden and Emma Ghirlanda enjoy the Kaapschehoop Trail in October.
December and January Adventurous Journeys and Residential.
Many girls are to enjoy their Silver and Gold Adventurous Journeys in the Drakensberg and in
Magoebaskloof.
Girls will also serve at the Residential Project at the Owl Rescue.
We extend our thanks to Jo-Anne Glen and Otto Whimper of Chameleon Adventures for their contin-
ued high standard of support for, and care of, the girls during these ventures.
MV Enrolment for The President’s Award.
The MVs will be introduced to The President’s Award on the first day of Term 1: 2017.
There will be a Parents’ Information Meeting for MV parents, and parents of other girls who enrol for
the first time on the programme, on Thursday, 26 January, 2017.
Thank you to all who supported the Kats House Fundraiser on 3 October in which we were all enter-
tained by Mr Digby Ricci who gave us an insightful speech about the hilarious and moving film, Muriel’s
Wedding. The amount of R10 562.72 was made and has been donated to Christchuch Care Centre, the
Kats House community partner.
UV Siyakhana Food Garden visit
On 1 December, the UVs departed from Roedean on buses for the Siyakhana Food Garden. They were
welcomed and given a brief presentation on food security by the project co-ordinator, after which they
were divided into groups and spent the morning involved in various permaculture gardening activities.
It was a successful, enjoyable morning and the pupils left with new knowledge and an insight into the
importance of sustainable life-choices.
LV Flying Children Visit: 2 December
In the two days leading up to the Flying Children Schools visit on 2 December, the pupils were involved
in various activities, equipping them with skills and an understanding of the environment with which
they would be engaging. One of the highlights of the two days was the Puppet and Theatre Workshop.
Girls made puppets which were used in their Christmas drama presentation to the children at their allo-
cated school.
Thank you to all the LVs for your commitment and ownership of the three-day process, making it possi-
ble for the outcomes to be achieved successfully.

The Roedean Academy Prize Giving
The Roedean Academy Prize Giving took place on 5
November, 2016, in Founders’ Hall at Roedean School.
It was a wonderful occasion, filled with much celebra-
tion, as the girls delighted in their own achievements,
as well as the achievements of their friends.
The Academy Director, Ms Sandi McCallum, spoke
about the Academy and outlined its achievements and
progress during the course of 2016. She congratulated
the prize-winners and reminded all present, the
importance of reading. Following the speech, Mrs Mary Williams handed out the certificates and
book prizes to the delighted recipients.
“Thank you” speeches by the girls followed the prizes. This was a highlight for all of the guests, as the
girls paid remarkable tributes to their teachers. All were impressed by the confidence of the speak-
ers, and by the passion and eloquence of their tributes to the significant impact of their teachers’
dedication to them.
After the speeches, there was a message to the Matric girls by Mrs Caroline Green, who imparted
excellent advice to the girls. Following this, Mrs Agnes Nugent announced the two winners of the
Realema Teaching Intern Programme. Realema is an excellent programme run by St John’s College It
offers teaching bursaries and internships to deserving students. Mrs Brett Jury from Bidvest Bank
announced the bursary for the top Roedean Academy Grade 12 student for 2016. This bursary
includes study and accommodation fees,
and it is certainly a life-changing oppor-
tunity for the lucky recipient of this re-
markable award.
Following the Prize Giving, the Academy
girls, teachers, parents, and guests were
treated to a sumptuous tea in the beau-
tiful Roedean Gardens. It was a very spe-
cial day and all present left with a sense
of fulfilment and achievement.

No Society can exist without a dedicated group of members. The commitment of the Roedean debat-
ers, both Junior and Senior, and of our coaches, Irene Mpofu and Mu’azzam Takolia, has been un-
questioned throughout the year. Roedean’s debating achievements are indicative of the girls’ readi-
ness to strive and to question.
CRATES continues to provide the girls with a platform to exchange opinions and to look for ways of
addressing difficult questions. The Roedean Debating Society, under the banner of Round Square,
and the pillar of Democracy, has brought debating to the broader community, with the creation of
CRATES at the start of this term. Our last CRATES session was held on Monday, 5 December. Despite
the girls having the option of leaving school early, many remained for the two-hour session to tease
out the consequences and obligations of feminism. We were delighted to welcome a number of St
John’s boys, including their Prefect Body of 2017. Irene Mpofu chaired the packed amphitheatre and
led the exploration of the topic. These were some of the ideas considered and debated: Can I be true
to my feminist principles and still have doors opened for me? Does chivalry call into question our femi-
nism? What is my obligation when hearing a sexist comment? What lies behind sexist comments?
How am I defined by the way I dress? In what ways do I perpetuate sexism?
Please diarise the following dates we have received from SACEE. A decision was taken at the AGM
to hold all SACEE debates on Saturdays, with the exception of the championship weekends, which
will still take place on Friday/Saturday and Sunday, as in the past.
The 2016 National Schools’ Debating Championships are set to take place during the week
of 9 -15 December in Limpopo. The tournament is the most competitive schools-level tournament in
the country, with the top 150 debaters from across the country meeting to determine the best pro-
vincial team. This year, the tournament is to be run by the University of Limpopo, and it promises to
be filled with challenging and contentious motions.

This year we are fortunate enough to have Daisy Whitcutt, Hanna Essop, and Saxon Leathwhite partic-ipate in the junior division, as members of the Junior Gauteng Squad. Each girl is a member of a differ-ent debating team, which will ensure opportunities to work with and learn from top speakers from oth-er Gauteng schools. Husnaa Choonara is one of the reserves. The girls have put in many hours of intense training and hard work to prepare for this tourna-ment. Our best wishes go to the girls and we hope to see them continue to fly the Roedean flag high. Good luck, girls; we are very proud of you! I extend my sincere thanks to all who have supported the Society this year, and who have contributed to its many successes. Enjoy your holidays!
The Music Department would like to congratulate the following girls, who achieved excellent results

We have all been motivated this term, whether it has been in the classroom or on the sportsfield!
Some of the swimmers have continued to attend extra training with Jason during the exam period.
We thank Jason for all he has done for Roedean and wish him all the best for his internship in PE. Our
divers have continued work hard for next year’s League competitions. Our tennis players hosted the
Junior Inter High in which Roedean came 7th out of 28 schools. We congratulate our A/B sides who
came 6th out of 28 sides in their League. The C teams won their League and D/E came 3rd in the C/D
League. Our LV and MV tennis championships took place and we congratulate Helena van Eeden who
won the singles championships and Helena van Eeden and Hayley Tsuen who won the doubles.

Thank you to all our teams members for maintaining their focus and sharing their enthusiasm in each
discipline. Fitness is a way of life and it is at last becoming a habit for girls at Roedean.
We hope you have a wonderful, restful holiday and come back refreshed in 2017.
The PTA Farewell Cocktail Party for Mary Williams, parents and members of staff who attended this
function at the end of October will agree that it was a memorable occasion. Michele Magwood, past
parent at Roedean and former member of the PTA Executive Committee, was the guest speaker and
delivered a well-rounded address including some wonderful tales about Mary’s growing up, school
days, and early career, which inspired Mary herself to share with us more anecdotes that had every-
one in stiches. The musical numbers offered for our entertainment by Marius Brink and Ralf Schmitt
and members of the Roedean Contemporary Music and Jazz Ensembles, as well as by a number of
professional musicians, were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Angel Jones, Roedean Old Girl, former member of the Roedean Board and parent at the school,
presented us with the following limerick:
“This Executive Head of Roedean Is the BEST that the school’s ever seen Mary hates too much attention “We love you” I’ll mention Now I’ll shut up and not make a scene.” During Mary’s tenure of office the PTA has funded significant improvements to the school’s facilities:
heating of the Learn-to-Swim and the main swimming pools, installation of the floodlights at the main
swimming pool and at the AstroTurf, construction of the change rooms at the Learn-to-Swim Pool and
refurbishment of the Auditorium and the Grade 0 Reading Room, as well as the recent renewal and
upgrade of the sound-and-lighting systems in Founders’ Hall, to give but a few examples. In each of
these instances and on so many other occasions, Mary’s engagement with the PTA committee has
contributed substantially to the PTA's success, not only in raising funds, but also in the pursuit of the
overall well-being of the greater Roedean school community.
Over the years, Mary’s subtle, but persuasive contribution has been instrumental in guiding the PTA,
a contribution which will be greatly missed in the future. We would like to express our sincere grati-
tude and appreciation for all that Mary has done for the PTA in her time at Roedean School, as well as
our profound admiration of the grace and style that accompanied her contribution.

Founders’ Hall Sound & Lighting Upgrade Completed! The upgrade included the installation of a brand
new Yamaha digital sound-mixing console, fader, stage box, and microphones. On the lighting side, new
lighting-control software and stage lights have been installed. Some savings were made and the instal-
lation was completed below cost, at R209 000. Thank you to Gerhard Kemp, Freddie Joubert, and Anel
Natali for all your hard work!
Facilities improvement: Shade-net installation lower sports fields The PTA has approved the installa-
tion of shade covers over the spectator stands at the tennis and netball courts for an amount of just
over R98 000. Installation will commence over the December holidays,
Textbooks Another textbook cycle has been successfully completed, with around 4 500 new books received, bar-
coded and covered in plastic, almost just as many second had books returned and scanned back into
stock, and around 7 500 books packed to order for Grades 8 to 12. Well done Vida Saayman, Paula
Morley, and all PTA Committee members and members of our Ad Hoc Volunteers Group for working so
tirelessly to reach this goal. You all need a well-deserved rest.
Any books not yet delivered from suppliers will be invoiced and delivered at the beginning of the year in
2017.
Stationery To all the parents who have placed orders for stationery this year—many thanks! All indications are
that Form Media Africa, to whom this task was outsourced, has done a stellar job. The PTA would like to
improve the offering – quality, price, and service-wise – year after year. Please send us your feedback at
[email protected]. All pre-ordered packs are delivered at the end of the school year. For
those who have missed out or found that they are one or two items short -note we will have a Pop-up
stationery store open for your convenience in the D&T Centre, on 18 and 19 January from 07:00 – 10:00
and then again from 13:00 - 15:00, daily.
Nominations – PTA Executive Committee In terms of its constitution, 25 parents from the Junior School
and the Senior School collectively serve on the Executive Committee of the PTA. The Committee is, in
turn, a standing committee of the Roedean Board. All parents are members of the PTA and are eligible
for election to the PTA Executive Committee. Election of new members takes place at the PTA’s annual
AGM, usually in March. Any candidate to be considered at that meeting, must either complete a nomi-
nation form himself or herself, or be nominated by another parent in Roedean. I am available to any
parent who would like to consider joining the PTA, and who would like more information on the PTA –
its activities and the role it plays in the Roedean community – before completing a nomination form.
Please send me an email at [email protected] and I will be in touch.
MySchool Card Joining this project is one of the simplest ways in which parents can raise money for Roedean. It re-
quires only registration and, thereafter, no effort other than to present a My School Card at partici-
pating retail stores. I you don’t have one yet, we recommend online registration for the MySchool
Card project – visit www.myschoolcard.co.za - the process is painless. Any questions? Please contact
Jackie Ahier at [email protected]. Don’t forget to use your card when buying school uniforms at
McCullagh and Bothwell, and at the Engen Quick Stop of your travels!
I would like to wish everyone a most enjoyable time over the December holidays, and I look forward
to welcoming you back on Friday, 20 January 2017 to our annual cocktail party held in Founders’ Hall.
This year has flown by in the blink of an eye, but I think we have managed to achieve a
great deal in what feels like an incredibly short period of time!
The Senior School library was converted into a cosy ‘book lounge’ for SAORA’s last
book event of the year, in which Miranda Sherry chatted to Tamara LePine Williams
about her new book Bone Meal for Roses. Guests were treated to delicious snacks and
drinks, and the raffle of two of Miranda’s books added much excitement to the even-
ing. SAORA is looking forward to hosting its next book event in the new year and I am
hoping you will treat yourselves, and join us.
On 19 October, we joined Gillian Boltman and Megan Raines at the orientation and wel-
come of the 2017 Grade 0s and their parents. I talked to both the parents and the girls,
telling them about SAORA, the school’s history and heritage, and then gave them the
Roedean Centenary book, plus a long-stemmed white rose. The rose had a tag saying
“Welcome to the Best School of All”. The function was lovely and will be replicated at
the other welcome events in the future.
We are ordering Roedean-branded wheelie bags - should you want one, please pop into
the SAORA shop to see the sample and place your order. We now stock the entire Junior School
uniform in both new and second-hand. Junior School checked tunics, short-sleeved shirts, blazers,
jerseys and socks—to get your daughter ready for the new year. From the beginning of Term 1, we
will have new short-sleeved shirts in bigger sizes to cater for the Senior School girls. At the end of this
year, if you get a chance to sort out your daughters’ cupboards, we would appreciate any second-
hand uniform she has outgrown.
The shop will re-open for Term 1 on Saturday,14 January, 2017, from 10h00 to 13h00, and it will also
be open on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 January, 2017 from 09h00 – 13h00.
Lastly, I wish you everything of the best over the festive season, and thank you for supporting our
events, our shop, and our Cupped Coffee van this year.
