...that together we are making a difference in the lives of many.
Believe...
letter fromthe director
Dear Friendsof Happy Trails,
That one word pretty much sums upthe way we operate at Happy Trails, andthere are a lot of things I believe in.
I believe you and Happy Trailsworking together to address animalabuse are making an amazingdifference in bringing peace andhealing to not only animals, but topeople too. Time after time our casesare so closely connected with otherviolent crimes that for the safety of ourcommunities as well as the humanetreatment of the animals, to addressanimal abuse is a must — no questionabout it.
I believe good will persevere, andgood things come out of bad situa-tions. The abused and neglectedanimals that come through the HappyTrails rescue program not only have theopportunity to receive healing in theirown lives, they in turn bring healing toothers in may ways — through our FarmAnimal Visitation Program where theyvisit the residents of nursing homes, through the joy they bring to sanctuaryvisitors and to the volunteers and staffwho work with them daily; through thewonderful adoptions that take placewhen an animal becomes part of acaring, loving family; and through thenew support groups and educationalprograms that are in the works for 2015.
I believe Happy Trails staff isdedicated. Just look at the front cover. In the midst of a snowstorm and single-digit temperatures, our Animal CareGiver staff still comes to work on time, makes sure that all the animals receivetheir food, fresh water, medicine and drybedding, and walk the horses out to thepaddocks for their daily exercise. Theytake pride in their work and in knowingthat lives hang in the balance. Theanimals are completely dependant on
MeetBoard President,
Kevin Bragg
Happy Trails Board President,Kevin Bragg, has played an active rolewith Happy Trails for about 10 years. Hehas been involved in everything fromanimal rescues to community events tofostering horses to construction projects.
Kevin’s personal goal is to see thesanctuary continue to grow in theservices we provide and the number ofanimals we are able to rescue. Thoughhe grew up with horses and they areone of his favorite animals, he surprised
himself by developing a connection withthe pigs. Having adopted an indoor potbelly pig of his own named Dozer, Kevinencourages people to consider pot bellypigs as pets. “Dozer is one of thecoolest animals I have ever known,”Kevin said. “I wish everyone could seewhat intelligent, amazing, clean animalsthey are.”
One of the hardest things for Kevinto do is to go on a rescue. “It just killsme to see how people abuse farmanimals. Animal abusers do need to beheld accountable in court for thesuffering they inflict.”
Happy Trails is happy to have Kevinserving as President of the Board ofDirectors for the sanctuary. You cancontact him [email protected].
"Looking back over my years with HappyTrails, I am amazed at what our organiza-tion has accomplished,” said Kevin.
Believe...
people for their daily care, and it’s ourresponsibility to take that care seriously.
I believe when life gives youlemons, you make lemonade. Thoughthe 2014 February fire was a devastat-ing loss, we continued on, stronger thanever. We not only survived, we thrived.Life is about overcoming the odds, about believing in the mission, aboutbelieving you are meant to succeed.I believe that the services provided byHappy Trails are absolutely crucial, andthat creating an awareness of animalabuse and making sure that ourcounties address animal abuse is theright thing to do. There is a saying thatgoes, “To say nothing, to do nothing, stops nothing.” Isn’t that the truth?
And I believe all of us togetherare doing amazing work. Though backin 2000 Happy Trails focus was onrescuing animals, it really evolved toencompass people as well. Helpingpeople connect with animals hasbrought so much peace and healing intoso many lives on both sides of theequation. I believe Happy Trails isbringing people and animals togetherin new and positive ways that pro-motes kindness, compassion andunderstanding for our furry andfeathered friends. I believe together,we are making great things happen, and I am eternally grateful. I wish foryou and your families a kind andcompassionate holiday season. Thankyou for being a part of the incrediblework of Happy Trails.
With kindness and compassion forall animals,

Planning for a Bright Future —Happy Trails Adds 8 More Acres to the Sanctuary
onday evening, November 18th,was the coldest night of the yearso far here in Northeast Ohio. Atleast it felt like it. In the midst ofswirling snow and bitter early-winter winds, the folks from KikoAuctions set up a folding table ina field on the other side of theroad down about 200 feet fromHappy Trails. There were 7.8acres being auctioned off — aparcel of land that was a mix-ture of fields and woods, withno buildings on the property. With it being so close in proxim-ity to the sanctuary, it would beperfect for a number of uses.Would we be lucky enough to win
the bid at the auction?
Volunteer Bentley Hudson,Board Member Walter Shields, and myself, stood in the semi-circle of people that had formedaround the table seemingstrangely out of place in the fieldof snow in the quickly-diminish-ing evening light. The auctioneerread aloud the legal statisticsand facts about the property(which felt like it took forever), asour toes and fingers slowly wentnumb. The bidding began, lastedfor about fifteen minutes, andbefore we knew it, Happy Trailswas the proud new owner ofthe land which was purchasedfor a fair market price of$28,500 (plus the 10% auctionfee added on top of that).
An amazing and generoussupporter has decided to donatethe funds for this propertypurchase, and we are extremelygrateful.
Happy Trails has many plansfor expansion, and we are in thebeginning stages of a series ofsteps we are taking to continueto become more self sustaining,
to provide additional educationalprograms, and to expand thesanctuary itself.
While we do have somecreative ideas for the use of thisproperty, we will share moredetails as plans become finalized.
This is an exciting purchasefor Happy Trails, as it marks thebeginning of a new era — a timeof new growth, of positivechange, of continual improve-ments in the services we provideand the welcoming of a newtime for the sanctuary.
We are most grateful to ourfriend and supporter for such anincredible gift — thank you, thank you, thank you!

Recent RescueHappy Trails recently assisted the
Portage APL with a mass removal of
animals from a situation where ap-
proximately 80 birds, 7 horses, 28
dogs, and an assortment of cats and
chickens were housed.
Many of the horses were severely
underweight and in need of proper
nutrition. The horses and poultry
were placed in the care of Happy
Trails, while the domestic birds such as
parrots and parakeets were placed in the care of the rescue group
called “The Bird Nerds” from Canton, Ohio. The horses have all been
placed under proper veterinary care with a monitored nutritional
program to help them gain weight.
Horse foster homes are always appreciated for situations such as
this when a large group of horses are in need of removal. As a foster
home, you can be a short-term foster or a long-term foster. For
more information on becoming a foster home for horses or any
other rescued farm animals, contact Happy Trails staff member
Ashley Kloes at 330-296-5914.
Recent Adoptions
Caring KidsOne day toward the end of
summer, a great-grandmother
arrived at Happy Trails along with
her three year old grand daugh-
ter. The beautiful little girl
proudly handed us this adorable
ceramic piggy bank. She had
managed to collect about $5 that
she wanted to give to help care
for the animals, and she had
thought of doing this all by
herself. She wanted to do some-
thing to make a difference. Keep
in mind she was three.
What an incredible world we
would live in if all adults were as
compassionate as this very
serious, very matter-of-fact
youngster. We were honored to
giver her and her great-grand-
mother a tour that day, and we
were also humbled to accept this
heart-felt gift from a child who
chose to be a part of Happy
Trails. What an amazing
experience....not just for her, but
for us. Talk about inspiring
someone to do good. She most
certainly inspired all of us with
her visit, her generosity, and her
already making a difference at
such a young age. Thanks to
ALL the amazing kids out there
who have done something in
their own way to help rescued
animals!
Animal adoptions have been going crazy! Crazy good that is!Here are some of our furry and feathered friends that we saidgoodbye to recently. Often we do so with mixed emotions....happy tosee them find a family that they can call their own and to know theyhave that someone special who will love and care for them....sad forourselves to know that their time in our lives has come to an end andthat our job is done. Our role in their life is changing — while theytouched our hearts in a monumental way, it’s time for them to bringhappiness and companionship to their new families.
Our very best wishes were sentalong with: Bowie, a 14-year-old Appal-oosa gelding; Renaissance, a 24-year-old blind Appaloosa gelding; Casino, a6-year-old mini pinto gelding; Graciano,a 21-year-old National Show Horse;Calypso, a 4-year-old female pygmygoat from the Indiana rescue; Adam, acockfighting rooster; a group of 9Rouen ducks; 3 California white bat-tery cage hens adopted to a home inIndiana; and a California hen and abrown hen adopted together. To all the
people who adopt rescued farm ani-
mals — you are our heroes!

Euthanasia, the final gift of love
We’ve all been there. All of us, that is,who have loved and cared for thatspecial animal in our life.
It’s easy to get attached to some-one who loves us unconditionally.
There’s that old joke about puttingyour wife and your dog in the trunk ofyour car and opening the trunk an hourlater and see which one is still happy tosee you. The unconditional love that isshowered upon us by our furry, feath-ered or hairy beasts is often unde-served.
And it seems so unfair that many ofthe animals who share our lives with usdon’t live as long as we’d like them to.
Though the hurt of losing someoneyou love is part of living, you might beable to soften the loss by slightlychanging your perspective.
Since the time I started HappyTrails nearly fifteen years ago, I havehad the unique privilege of beingpresent with numerous animals as theyhave crossed the “Rainbow Bridge”, asmany animal-lovers have come to callthe way animals cross over into theworld of the spirit. I call it a privilegebecause being there for someone asthey pass on in their journey is indeedan honor as well as a responsibility.
When you love an animal, you wantto do what’s best for them. Sometimesthat decision is hard to make becauseour selfishness gets in the way. Ofcourse we want them to be with uslonger, to continue to be a part of our
lives. That’s only natural.I believe that they are here with us
to teach us lessons that are unique toeach and every life they touch. Thoselessons might include patience orhumility. By intently staring at thestrange bug crawling across thesidewalk for an amazing length of time, your dog may be teaching you to payattention to details or to not overlook thelittle things. As you are flying along atbreakneck speed down a trail on amassive, muscled horse that weighs1,200 lbs, he may be teaching you totrust, or he may be teaching you that it’sOK to test your comfort zone. Since youhave just obviously placed your life inthe hands of a beast who should hechoose to not listen to you at any givenmoment, he could easily launch youskyward like a rocket just for fun. Ifwe’re lucky and have done our home-work, this lesson turns out well. Some-times your contented, fluffy, napping catis teaching you how to take time foryourself, not sweat the little stuff, andthat it’s OK to have a bit of an attitudenow and then just to keep other peopleon their toes. My two house pigs and myfoster pig are always very vocal. I call itsinging. Especially in the morningswhen the sun comes up and it’s time togreet the new day. I have named theirsoulful rendition “the morning song”.They teach me it’s OK to break intosong when you’re happy, and that younever know what treasurers you’ll find
when rooting through the grass. Theyteach me to enjoy and appreciate thesimple things in life, which in the bigpicture, may be the most important.
So if we take these lessons with usto help the next animal who crosses ourpath, what a beautiful tribute to their lifethey shared with us.
Sometimes we do have to lovesomeone enough to let them go. Whenthey have taught us all the lessons weneed to learn, at least from them, thenit’s their turn to move on in their journey. They have completed their mission hereon this earth. However, they continue tobe a part of us through our memoriesand the lessons they taught us.
So, when those animals in our livesbecome older, overcome with terminalillness or health issues that prevent acomfortable existence and good qualityof life, I consider it a final act of lovewhen we come to the decision to helpthem cross into the world of the spiritwith peace, comfort and dignity. It’s thelast gift we can offer them as our way ofsaying thank you for having been a partof our lives.
I believe that all animals havelessons to teach if we only choose topay attention, to listen and learn. Thisincludes not only the domestic animalswe consider our pets, but the farmanimals who are normally looked at onlyas food, the wild mustangs out west, thewildlife in our back yards, the exoticanimals running free, and our featheredfriends soaring on the winds.
So be assured that giving that finalgift of love is very much appreciatedwhen we help to end their suffering andhelp them peacefully move on. I believethat one day when it’s our turn to cross, those very special animals will be there, happy to see us. They will welcome usand give us the same gifts of comfort, caring, and peace we once gave themwhen they left us, and they will then giveus these back as a welcoming gift.
As an animal rescue worker, Ibelieve there are things worse thandeath. I have seen them in my manyyears of witnessing animal abuse andneglect. To help a beloved animal cross,to help prevent suffering, and to be therewith one last hug, a gentle pat on thehead, a kiss on the cheek, I can assureyou that it is very much appreciated. It isindeed, the final gift of love.

Kudos to our Animal Care Givers who Care for theAnimals During Blizzards and Freezing Winter Rains...
Winter came on with avengeance already this year inearly November. The bitter,single-digit temperatures hit usall like a ton of bricks. Weatherthat we usually don’t experienceuntil after the first of the yearswooped in and turned North-east Ohio into a deep freeze. In ahurry, winter doors went up,heat lamps came on, and extrastraw for warm bedding wasdelivered by the truckful.
It’s hard enough caring forhealthy animals that live out-doors. It’s even more of a chal-lenge caring for a large numberof rescued animals who havespecial needs and have beenabused. Many of the animals wereceive are starvation cases.Others have health issues. Somehave broken bones. Some havebroken spirits. All are worthsaving.
So I’d like to give kudosto our die-hard Animal CareGiver staff members whobrave the elements, don’twhine, don’t call off work, and do what is necessary tocare for those who relytotally on us for their well-being and daily care. Oftenall you can see of our CareGiver staff is a pair of eyespeering out from betweenlayers of hats and scarves.Sometimes these same eyesare looking up at you afterthey’ve taken a good fall onthe ice, or are open wide indismay when they slosh a bucketof icy water down the inside oftheir boot, or are filled with tearsas they are carrying a sick animalto a heat source.
I did this job for the first tenyears of the creation of HappyTrails, most often twice a day bymyself, in weather just like this. Iknow first hand what thesededicated care givers go throughand the self-motivation that ittakes to keep going at the end ofa shift when you can no longerfeel your toes or your fingers andyour gloves are hardened withicicles from getting your handswet carrying water buckets. Iknow that the thought of anyanimal who is waiting for food ormedicine or dry bedding is whatkeeps them going. It’s not thepay - I can testify to that.
A great deal of physicalstrength and an emotionalconnection with the animals is abasic requirement for our crew.
The work required of ourAnimal Care Giver staff isn’t foreveryone. If you want to seewhat it’s like to shadow a caregiver during their shift in the
freezing rain or in the middle of asnow storm, call us at 330-296-5914. We’ll make it happen foryou. We’ll also guess you won’tbe coming back.
If you truly want to help withfeeding this winter, call us tomake arrangements to help.Dress warm. Wear layers. Haveanti-inflammatories ready forwhen you get home.
However, if you don’t wantto work outside in these miser-able conditions and care forrescued animals, remember
someone has to! Please con-sider sponsoring an hour ormore of animal care this winter.
Farm animals live outside. That’s all there is to it.
Our Animal Care Giver staffdoesn’t have a choice other thanto suck it up and get preparedevery day to battle bitter winds, icy conditions, and deep snow, allwhile juggling water buckets, feed containers, medications, and bales of hay and straw.
To help us care for theanimals this winter, $10 willsponsor an hour of animal care.
It normally takes eight hoursper shift (two people minimum
Animal Care Givers fill the water buckets tocarry to the shelters and break the ice in thebowls that are frozen, but here’s an impor-tant note...be sure to not spill the bucket ofcold water on the pig who is helping you.
Sometimes we have to get the ice balls off the furof the draft horses’ ankles without getting kicked.

Last year, after the February fire, Happy Trails
hosted “A Night of Hope and Inspiration” in
March. It was an amazing evening of heart-
warming and inspiring stories, music, prizes and
games, wine pulls, a Chinese auction, incredible
food, and a camaraderie and special connection
felt by over 300 guests. Little did we know that
“A Night of Hope and Inspiration” would define
us and become a yearly event for the sanctuary.
It’s a night to not focus on all the bad, sad things
that we see daily, but rather to focus on the
good, the progress, the positive, the accomplish-
ments, the victories, and the success stories.
Please plan to join us for an uplifting, enjoy-
able evening with your extended Happy Trails
family. Bring friends, family and co-workers, and
introduce them to a unique organization that
they will definitely want to become a part of.
Grab your new 2015 calendar now and save
the date for Saturday, March 21st. “A Night of
Hope and Inspiration” will once again be held
at Todaro’s Party Center in Akron. Watch the
website and upcoming newsletters for details.
Tickets will go on sale in December, as we expect
the event to sell out quickly.

A Tribute to Peaches, Gaiaand Willis, Pot Belly Pigs
Sometimes an animal touchesyour life, sometimes for only afleeting moment, others for a longextended season. Recently we lostthree beautiful souls who passed onfor various reasons. We’d like you to
know them as we did.
Peaches came to Happy Trailsmany years ago as one of nine babieswho had born to a mother pig whopassed away. Happy Trails was askedto take in the new babies, and we did, bottle feeding constantly. Peacheswas adopted by a family who re-turned her to the sanctuary when shewas about a year old, and she lived atHappy Trails ever since. Peaches, abig, beautiful, chubby black piggy wasknown for her easy going and laid-back personality. She was friendly andkind to everyone she met. While shedidn’t have the good fortune to havebeen adopted a second time, we hadthe good fortune of having her in ourlives. She began to have some serioushealth issues, and was sent to OSU in
Columbus for diagnosis and treat-ment. While coming out of anesthe-sia, the unthinkable happened andher trachea collapsed. Everythinghappened in a matter of seconds, andthough the OSU vets worked quicklyto try to save her, the piggy unexpect-edly passed away. The news wasdevastating to all who knew her, andshe will always hold a special place inmany hearts.
Gaia (the name meaninggoddess of the earth, for herfavorite thing in life was to lay inmuddy dirt and puddles) was a verysweet, pink pot belly pig who cameto Happy Trails from a rescue
situation in Indiana. We werethrilled to have her with us, as shewas friendly, curious, inquisitive andloved traveling in the back seat ofthe logo truck with Ashley Ehmannand myself as we drove back fromthe Elkhart, Indiana humane society.Though she seemed to besettling in well, in a shortperiod of time she began tonot be able to move about.Moving seemed to be verypainful, and she, too, was takento the vet hospital at OSU inColumbus for radiographs. X-rays showed a great deal ofarthritis that was now affectingher spine and pressing on herspinal cord. Sadly, there was norealistic surgery to eliminatethe condition and no amountof pain killers seemed to bringher any comfort. The toughdecision was made to let hergo. It didn’t seem fair that thiswonderful little pig was finallyrescued from a horrible situation, only to not be able to enjoy a life ofcare and love for very long. Wedecided to look at the positive, and
focused on the fact that we loved herand she knew it. Though she wasn’t atthe sanctuary more than a matter ofweeks, she touched many lives andbrought people together from twostates as we cooperated with eachother to coordinate her rescue.
And then there’s Willis. Ah,Master Willis. We had taken to callinghim Master Willis because he seemedto command respect. Willis came toHappy Trails way back in the begin-ning when we still accepted ownersurrenders. Some caring peoplehelped some un-caring owners agreeto give up the little guy, and withgreat dignity he walked down a horsetrailer ramp in the driveway andsmack into our hearts. I had tried forthe longest time to get Willis to growhair, until finally the vet pointed outto me that Willis was a breed ofhairless pig. I am saying this with alldue respect - he looked like a littleminiature hippopotamus. He wasnever chosen by a family to beadopted, so all of us were his family.90% of the people connected toHappy Trails knew Willis, and most ofthem sat with him and gave him theobligatory belly rubs at one time oranother. In his earlier days he wouldoften bite people just for fun. Forsome reason, I wasn’t one of thosepeople. Not being intimidated by thepigs I dearly love, Willis probably
thought I was just too dumb to beafraid of him, so what was the use? Atnearly 17-years-old, Willis finally hadsomething take a hold of him thatnone of us could fix...old age. His legswere extremely bowed with arthritis, his one leg swelled up horribly and he
page 16
underwent leg surgery at the vethospital. He continued to go downhillafter the surgery and it becameincreasingly difficult for him to standon his own. On his last day on thisearth the weather warmed up and itwas a gorgeous day. That afternoonhe motored his way outside into thebright sunshine and laid on a blanket, surrounded by several of his humanfriends. He scooted around so he wasfacing the sun, and we spent pre-cious time together. Opinionated.Grumpy. Adorable. All words todescribe Master Willis. That day andthe next day, before the vet arrivedto perform the euthanasia, a multi-tude of people brought Willis hisfavorite treats — pumpkin, Oreocookies, apples, pie, you name it — ifhe ever liked it, it was there for him.Eight of us took turns hugging thelittle man and professing our loveand appreciation for him before hecrossed into the world of the spirit. Ifonly every animal in this world couldbe so loved. During his 13 or so yearsat Happy Trails, Willis touched manylives, bit many staff members, andbrought smiles to many faces. Youcouldn’t help but love him.
So while we are sad to say ourfinal goodbyes to these amazing littlecreatures, we are also grateful thatthey touched our lives in such bigways. They were all great teachers, and the lessons we needed to learnwere there for us should we chooseto open our eyes and accept them.So to Peaches, Gaia and Willis, hopefully some day when it’s my turnto cross, I hope you’ll all be runningup to greet me and take that walkwith me across the Rainbow Bridgetoo. Thank you all for having been apart of the Happy Trails family andfor having touched so many lives.May you now be rooting up treasuresthat only you will find!
