CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 1 Hello everyone, We took the cover off our Diva (C-6). Hopefully most of you have done the same. The weather is starting to cooperate so we can get out there and enjoy our cars. April 25 th we had our annual Dinner Dance at Salvatore’s Italian Restaurant. As usual Salvatore’s did a great job. Thanks to Bob Kaczmarek and Sue Krezmien for a great job. Some of the high lights of the evening were Frank Pastore made up a couple of picture boards of past events that the club had been to since he and Maryanne were members, and Mel Skeide had pictures going back a little further of club events they attended. If anyone that was not there would be interested in seeing the pictures I’m sure Frank or Mel would bring them to the next event. As I announced at our last meeting we now have a new editor for our newsletter. It is Dennis Buckley, so please welcome him by supplying him with news articles all year long. I did not attend the Maple Fest in Franklinville as it was the day after our dinner dance. I hope we had some C.O.B. members there enjoying the pancakes and sausages at the car show. As we approach the month of May we are starting the corvette season. Let’s enjoy it with every show, cruise, every ice cream cone, hamburg, soda and beer (oops disregard the beer). Last summer we fell in love with the C7 and knew it was a matter of time before we purchased one.

After the holidays during the long cold winter, Marianne casually started surfing the Internet looking for a

used/like new 2014 Coupe that someone may be upgrading for a 2015 convertible, Z51, or Z06. What she

found were several cars at prices of what a discounted '15 cost. Every night she checked the inventory of the

big dealers, Kerbeck, MacMulkin, Criswell, etc. who compete nationally with their internet prices. While

their prices were discounted quite a bit from MSRP it was difficult to find the match of options we preferred

without going overboard and the logistics involving an out of town dealer were a concern to us.

By now it looked as if the only way to select a new car with the options we wanted was to order from a local

dealer, so we made an appointment with Bill Wertheim of Paddock Chevrolet. Bill priced up the car exactly

as we wanted. About the same time I was researching the GM legacy pricing since my father worked at the

GM complex in Tonawanda for over thirty years and I was eligible for the GM discount. Bill let us know

that we only had about a week left to order a 2015 before the model year would change to a 2016 (with a

rumored price increase).

Marianne continued to search on line for Corvettes that matched our criteria. She found a Laguna Blue

coupe at West Herr in Orchard Park they took shipment of in late October. We contacted Bill and he

arranged to trade another Corvette in Paddock's stock. Unfortunately it looked as if West Herr had a

potential customer for our car. It took a week of phone calls, texts, and emails, but Bill secured us our dream

car. We took delivery of our C7 the day of the April meeting. A special thank you to Bill and salesman

Mike Benaquist (a future COB member) for all their hard work. And thank you to West Herr for the free

storage over the winter.

Seven Great Generations

I have been fascinated by Corvettes since the day they first appeared in dealers' showrooms. General Motors has

now produced seven generations of this vehicle and the C-7 has been declared the best so far. I must concur,

owing to the fact that I have had some experience with five of those generations.

My first encounter came in 1962 when I was fortunate enough to be able to order a 340 HP, 4-speed, Roman

Red convertible. This vehicle was a beast, had a solid rear axle and rode like a "buck board" but it was

"America's Sports Car." The car took us to the World's Fair in New York and served as a daily driver until 1966

when I was drawn to the first Stingray.

Again I was able to purchase a new 1966 Milano Maroon, 300 HP, convertible with two tops. The '62 was

traded for our Stingray and purchased by a Buffalo woman, but eventually wound up being purchased by a

gentleman in Sharon, PA. The car again sold to a couple in Conneaut Lake, PA, and was later sold on eBay and

is now in the state of Alabama.

CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 6

OK, back to our brand new Stingray which became our daily driver. This car took us all over the east,

summer stops in New England, Boston, Cape Cod, etc. And in the winter (equipped with studded snow tires)

took us to various amateur hockey tournaments with the rear hatch stuffed with equipment. As that rear

hatch was unsuitable for little ones, the car had to be replaced with a steel vehicle. Our prized Stingray was

promptly stolen from the dealership and was destroyed in a police car chase.

The passenger car served its purpose, but there was always that thought of GM's marvelous sports cars. So

after three decades I was again in a position to acquire a new 2000, Torch Red, 345 HP automatic coupe.

This vehicle was so drastically improved over previous models, you couldn't help but to fall in love with it.

The handling, power and ride were all exhilarating. This car, although not a daily driver, traveled over

55,000 miles through the US as far as Arizona and many parts of Route 66 in car shows at Peoria, AZ;

Effingham; Lake Placid; Stowe, VT and locally.

Once again a new generation (C-6) was produced and the styling gradually grew on us, so it was time to

think about a new purchase. We eventually decided on a 2010 Crystal Red metallic, 430 HP, automatic

coupe. This car was ordered, built, and delivered on St. Patrick's Day at the National Corvette Museum in

Bowling Green, KY. The 2000 Coupe was sold to a college professor in Amherst, NY. Although the C-6 had

not changed drastically from the C-5, it was a "looker."

CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 7

Then the C-7 debuted at the Detroit Auto Show and once again this marvelous vehicle began to grow on

people, and I happened to be one of them after seeing it in person. The new generation of the Stingray was

selling quickly. Allotments were not available to all dealers, but eventually they did open up and again we

ordered, waited, and finally purchased a Torch Red, 460 HP, automatic coupe. Upon taking possession of the

C-7, the C-6 was traded and purchased by a gentleman in Rochester, NY.

Now let me say, all Corvettes are wonderful vehicles, but until you experience the thrill of driving the C-7

Stingray, you cannot imagine the improvements the manufacturer has built into this car. It is truly a world-

class sports car. The maximum performance that is available cannot ever be safely realized on the street and

probably not even on a track without some training and practice. Nevertheless, this car brings "miles of

smiles" on the highway, and I am confident it will continue for years to come.

Revive the wave!

News from the National Corvette Museum

In September 1995 a program began where new Corvette buyers could select an

option to take delivery of their car at the National Corvette Museum. On Friday March 6,

2015 the 10,000th R8C Delivery was made. The program includes a VIP tour of the Plant

and the Museum, an engraved plaque, a Museum Delivery door jamb decal and a one-

year individual membership to the Museum.

The famous sinkhole has been filled in and the Skydome will be ready for the July 2015

Weather Conditions’ Effect on High-Performance Brake

Components

April 10, 2015

Some 2012–2015 Camaro SS, Camaro ZL1; 2013–2016 ATS; 2014–2016 CTS (VIN A); 2014–

2015 Camaro Z/28, Caprice PPV, Corvette, and SS models may be hard to move after the

vehicle has been parked for a period of time. A crunch sound right before the vehicle starts to

move may be heard.

Depending on how long the vehicle has been parked, the weather conditions in which the vehicle

was parked, and how recently the vehicle has been washed, the condition may be a simple noise

when the vehicle first moves or, at the extreme, the vehicle cannot be moved out of the parking

space.

This condition may be due to the brake pads freezing to the vehicle’s rotors. Do not replace any

brake components for this condition.

High performance brake components (Fig. 11) have a tendency to lightly bind, often noted as

resistance, and then lightly clunk when attempting to move the vehicle forward or rearward after

a cold soak. This is usually noticed after parking, when the brakes have been wet, such as when

driving in the rain or just after a car wash. This is expected of high performance brakes with high

friction pads and does not affect the operation or performance of the brakes.

Fig 11

If a residual roughness is felt when braking, it can be easily cleaned by applying the brakes

several times until the roughness is gone. If washing the vehicle prior to long-term storage, it is

recommended that the vehicle be driven and the brakes applied several times before storing the

vehicle.

BARRETT JACKSON AND BACK

It began at 3:30 am on Tuesday April 14th. Lee and I got on a 7am flight to Fort

Lauderdale .We arrived at 11am and were met by Jim Brett. Jim and Nicolet were

graciously hosting us for the 8 days of our visit. These 8 days went by faster than we

could imagine. Lee and I traveled to West Palm Beach to the Florida Keys with Captain

Jim in the driver’s seat.

On Friday we met up with Mike and Cindy Erdey, Lynn and Larry Ienco and my

Martini buddy Rese and Nancy Graber where we all had breakfast together and then

went to West Palm to the Barrett Jackson Auction. For anyone who has never seen or

heard of Barrett Jackson, it’s a car guy’s or gal’s dream. There were all kinds of cars,

antique, muscle cars, classic and daily drivers going for around $4 - $5 thousand to

$300 thousand. Not only were there cars to be seen but also the people were fun to

watch. It was a lot of fun to reunite with some of the C.O.B. snow birds. We even ran

into John Meyerhoff walking around checking things out. We are always talking about

C.O.B. being our extended family so on this trip Lee and I experienced it firsthand.

We want to thank Jim and Nicolet Brett and Mike and Cindy Erdey for opening their

homes to this group of C.O.B. Family.
