It is my pleasure to join you in celebrating the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association’s (VCSA) 16th Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon. This program, which commemorates the achievements of outstanding Vietnamese-American high school students, is an accomplishment of which you should be very proud.

For over 20 years the VCSA has worked to instill a sense of civic responsibility among Vietnamese-Americans and build strong communities across the United States. I applaud your efforts today as you recognize the academic accomplishments of these exceptional high school students who graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian in their respective schools. I admire your commitment to educationand I am confident that the VCSA’s Youth Excellence Recognition Program will continue to fosteracademic success in future generations of Vietnamese-Americans.

Your efforts to develop young men and women of character serve as an example for the state of Texas and our nation, and I encourage you to continue to pursue excellence in the years to come. I send my best wishes for these remarkable students as they pursue bright futures.

VCSA 16th Annual Youth Excellence Recognition ProgramAfter 1975, there have been large waves of Vietnamese refugees escaping from Vietnam to the United States, Canada, and other Western countries. Since then, the Vietnamese-American population has grown tremen-dously and contributed a great deal to the adopted homeland. With a population of more than one million, the Vietnamese-American communities in the United States have started building their lives and contributed to the society in all different ϐi elds. The second and third generations of Vietnamese-American have in-creased in population and comprised a major part of these communities.

In 1997, The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association organized the ϐirst Vietnamese-American Youth Recognition Luncheon to recognize the academic achievement of 13 Vietnamese-American students who graduated from more than 55 local high schools in Houston as Valedictorians or Salutatorians. Mayor Lee Brown was the Keynote Speaker for this event. The event was very well received by the community and had a very positive impact on the Asian youth in general and the Vietnamese-American youths in particular.

The event emphasized the importance of education and encouraged the youth to excel academically. In the past fourteen years, we have continued this program as an Annual event of our organization. This program has recognized more than 320 Vietnamese-American students in the past fifteen years for their excellent academic achievements from local high schools. This year, Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is proud to present the Sixteenth Annual Youth Excellence Recognition program. In this event, we will pres-ent a slide show featuring the highlights of VCSA activities in the past year. We also would like to encourage the younger generations of Vietnamese-Americans to excel in education by following the footsteps of the outstanding academic and leadership achievements of the Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as Valedictorian or Salutatorian in the Greater Houston and vicinity. Other scholarship programs will also be presented in this event. The past honorees will highlight the event with spectacular cultural per-formances and entertainment.

The Recognition Luncheon is organized on Sunday, August 5th, 2012 at Kim Son Ballroom, 10603 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77072.

Ngày Truyền Thống Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam 2012 Kể từ biến cố tháng 4 năm 1975, hàng triệu người Việt Nam đã phải bỏ nước ra đi để tìm kiếm một đời sống tự do và trong số này, khoảng hơn phân nửa đã đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, những người di dân Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ không những đã nhanh chóng ổn định đời sống mà còn đóng góp cho xã hội tạm dung nhiều thành quả quan trọng về mọi phương diện như kinh tế, giáo dục, xã hội, khoa học, kỹ thuật, v.v... Trong tác phẩm “Vietnamese Americans” do cơ sở Rourke Corporation tại Florida xuất bản năm 1991, tác giả Susan Auerbach đã viết: “Các thành quả của người Việt trong khuôn khổ học đường, trong lãnh vực khoa học kỹ thuật, và trong phạm vi kinh doanh đã gây phấn khởi cho những người thuộc các sắc dân khác vừa đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ.” Trong một tác phẩm khác với nhan đề “The Vietnamese Experience in America” do cơ sở xuất bản viện đại học Indiana ấn hành năm 1992 tại Indianapolis, ông Paul Rutledge nhận định là “với sự thành công nhanh chóng của người Việt, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, xã hội Hoa Kỳ sẽ được hưởng mối lợi gấp nhiều lần số ngân khoản chính phủ đã trợ giúp họ trong vấn đề định cư.” Thật vậy, như những nhận xét của các tác giả nêu trên, người Việt tỵ nạn đã thành công khá nhanh chóng so với những người di dân khác và thành công về mọi lãnh vực, đặc biệt tại học đường. Hầu hết những người di dân Việt Nam đã đến Hoa Kỳ với một số vốn nghèo nàn về Anh ngữ. Tuy nhiên, với tinh thần hiếu học đã ăn sâu vào tâm khảm người Việt từ bao thế hệ, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn ngủi, họ đã trở nên những học sinh, sinh viên xuất sắc tại các trường trung, đại học và sau khi tốt nghiệp, đã mang khả năng của mình để cống hiến cho xã hội Hoa Kỳ. Trong hơn hai thập niên qua, thế hệ con em của những người di dân Việt Nam đầu tiên đã dần dần trưởng thành và đang cố gắng nối tiếp truyền thống cha anh để đạt được những thành quả tốt đẹp trong sự học. Đầu năm 1997, qua sự liên lạc với ban giám hiệu các trường trung học ở Houston và vùng phụ cận, hội VHKHVN được biết số học sinh Việt Nam tốt nghiệp với thứ hạng thủ khoa (valedictorian) và á khoa (salutatorian), niên khóa 1996-1997, chiếm một tỉ lệ khá cao so với các sắc dân khác. Trước sự kiện này, hội VHKHVN đã tổ chức một buổi tiệc vào ngày 3 tháng 8 năm 1997 để tuyên dương và phát thưởng các em học sinh ưu tú kể trên. Mục đích chính của buổi tiệc là để khuyến khích tất cả các học sinh, sinh viên Việt Nam chuyên cần hơn trong sự học. Trong buổi tiệc, tiến sĩ Lee Brown, thị trưởng thành phố Hous-ton, đã phát biểu trên diễn đàn là ông rất ngạc nhiên và vô cùng thán phục trước thành tích vẻ vang của các học sinh người Mỹ gốc Việt. Ý nghĩa và sự thành công của buổi tiệc năm đầu tiên đã gây được tiếng vang đáng kể, không những tại thành phố Houston mà còn lan đến các thành phố có đông người Việt cư ngụ tại Hoa Kỳ và tại một vài quốc gia khác. Sau đó, được sự khích lệ của quý đồng hương, hội VHKHVN quyết định sẽ cố gắng tiếp tục chương trình tuyên dương cùng phát thưởng các học sinh ưu tú hằng năm. Chương trình này sẽ được bao gồm trong các buổi tiệc với danh xưng “Ngày Truyền Thống Hội VHKH-VN,” được tổ chức vào mỗi đầu tháng Tám. Trong 15 năm vừa qua, Ngày Truyền Thống đã có dịp tuyên dương thành tích xuất sắc của hơn 320 em học sinh trung học Việt Nam tại Houston và vùng phụ cận. Năm nay, hội VHKHVN hân hạnh giới thiệu thành tích xuất sắc của 23 em học sinh ưu tú của niên khóa2011 – 2012. Đặc biệt năm nay là năm kỷ niệm lần thứ 16 Hội thực hiện chương trình ý nghĩa này và công tác tổ chức do chính các em học sinh xuất sắc các niên học trước phụ trách. Với chương trình tuyên dương và phát thưởng các học sinh Việt Nam ưu tú, hội VHKHVN hy vọng sẽ ít nhiều góp phần vào việc khuyến khích các em trau giồi sự học để làm thăng tiến cộng đồng người Việt chúng ta tại Houston và vùng phụ cận.

DR. HAI T. HO, PH.D.Vice President of Research and Development,

Newell Rubbermaid

Hai is currently the Vice President of Research and Development at Newell Rubbermaid, a Fortune-500 company. He is responsible for leading prod-uct development and an organization operating in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Prior to that, he held numerous executive positions at HID Global and Seagate Corp. Over the past 20 years, he has worked in a variety of

different industries including aerospace, hard disk drives, smart cards, and label printers and software. As the named inventor of 18 patents and

author of over a dozen technical publications, he has spearheaded numerous innovations leading to best-in-class commercial products. Hai is passionate about organizational leadership, technology, and people. He is also a strong advocate of corporate leadership development among Asian American professionals. He holds

B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado.

Hai was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and left the country in 1975. He and his family were the first wave of Vietnamese immigrants in America. Over the years, Hai’s approach to life is to achieve happiness through a balance of career, family, and community service. He considers himself to be lucky to have exposure to both

the Eastern and Western cultures and values. He and his wonderful wife of 23 years are proud parents of three well-rounded children. He is an avid tennis player and enjoys many outdoor activities such as skiing, camping, and kayaking. He was the founder of the Colorado Asian Tennis Association for five years where

he brought together over 200 people each year to celebrate diversity and a passion for tennis.

Tiến sĩ Hải Hồ hiện nay đang là Phó Chủ tịch đặc trách Nghiên cứu và Phát triển của công ty Newell Rub-bermaid, một công ty được xếp hạng trong số 500 Công ty hàng đầu của Mỹ. Nhiệm vụ chính của Tiến sĩ Hải

là lãnh đạo bộ phận phát triển sản phẩm và hoạt động của công ty tại Âu, Á châu và Hoa Kỳ. Trước khi nhận nhiệm vụ này, Tiến sĩ Hải từng đảm nhiệm nhiều chức vụ lãnh đạo và điều hành cho công ty HID Global và

Seagate. Trong 20 năm qua, ông đã hoạt động trong nhiều lãnh vực bao gồm kỹ nghệ hàng không-không gian, thiết kế những ổ đĩa cứng máy điện toán, smart cards, máy in, và nhu liệu cho máy điện toán. Tiến sĩ Hải còn có bằng sáng chế của 18 thiết bị kỹ nghệ và điện tử, cũng như đã có trên một chục tài liệu nghiên cứu được ấn

hành trong những tạp chí chuyên ngành. Ông cũng là người đi tiên phong và sáng tạo trong nhiều lãnh vực chế tạo những sản phẩm thương mại phẩm chất cao. Ngoài ra, ông cũng là người quan tâm rất nhiệt thành trong các lãnh vực lãnh đạo công ty, kỹ thuật, và nhân sự, đặc biệt là torng lãnh vực đào tạo thành phần lãnh đạo

trong giới chuyên viên người Mỹ gốc Việt. Học vị của Tiến sĩ Hải gồm có Cử nhân, Cao học, và Tiến sĩ về ngành Kỹ sư Điện tại Đại học Colorado.

Tiến sĩ Hải sinh tại Saigòn, cùng với gia đình rời Việt Nam năm 1975 trong đoàn người tị nạn đầu tiên đến Mỹ. Trong cuộc đời của ông, nguyên tắc sống là đạt được hạnh phúc nhờ ở cân bằng giữa nghề nghiệp, gia đình và hoạt động cộng đồng. Ông nghĩ mình là người may mắn vì được hấp thụ cả hai nền văn hóa và giá trị Đông-

Tây. Ông đã lập gia đình được 23 năm và hai ông bà có được ba người con. Tiến sĩ Hải rất thích chơi banh tennis và những hoạt động dã ngoại như trượt tuyết, cắm trại, và bơi thuyền kayak. Ông là người thành lập Hội Tennis Châu Á tại Colorado và trong 5 năm đã quy tụ được hơn 200 người mỗi năm để cùng chia sẻ niềm đam

mê về môn banh tennis và sắc thái đa dạng của văn hóa mỗi nước.

Thành quả đáng kể nhất của em là ra trường Thủ-khoa của lớp em vì điều này cần rất nhiều năm học hành vất vả và chú tâm. Tốt nghiệp Thủ-khoa đã luôn luôn là mục tiêu của em ngay khi em vào trung-học. Em quyết tâm trở nên Thủ-khoa không chỉ vì em biết điều này sẽ làm cha mẹ em hãnh diện, mà còn vì những cơ hội đem đến cho em như học bổng, được nhận vào đại-học, và có được hiểu biết sâu xa hơn.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: My goals in the future are to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, attend and graduate from either Baylor College of Medicine or UT - Southwestern Medical School, practice as a pediatrician, and once I am well established, I hope to join Doctors Without Borders. Most Significant Achievement/Thanh Công: My most significant achievement in high school was rais-ing more than $5,000 for Houston’s homeless. As a Lieutenant Governor of Key Club, I asked the 9 clubs in my division to raise money for the Star of Hope – an organization built to support the homeless peoples of Houston. The clubs in my division held drives, fundraisers, and benefits to achieve the $1,000 goal that I set, and the end prospect was $4,000 over the initial goal. I was very proud of my division, to say the least! However small of a dent I made, it was a fantastic feeling to know that I was able to help those less fortunate. Thành tích quan trọng nhất trong khi em học trung học là quyên góp được hơn $5000 cho những người vô gia cư. Là Phó Chủ Tịch cho tổ chức Key Club, em đã yêu cầu 9 câu lạc bộ trong quận của mình quyên góp tiền cho Star of Hope – một tổ chức với mục đích giúp đỡ những người vô gia cư trong thành phố Houston. Những câu lạc bộ này đã tổ chức những buổi gây quỹ không những đạt được $1000 em yêu cầu lúc ban đầu, mà còn quyên góp thêm $4000. Em rất hãnh diện về quận của mình. Mặc dù sự đóng góp của em có thể không lớn, em cảm thấy sung sướng khi biết rằng mình có thể giúp đỡ được những người bất hạnh hơn mình.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: My goal is to attend medical school and become a pediatric oncologist. My grandmother passed from cancer before I or any other of my 20 cousins were born, and my great uncle is currently suffer-ing from lung cancer and is only given a year left to live. Having seen the type of impact that cancer can have on a person and on his or her family, I am inspired to dedicate my life to the victims of cancer and cancer research. As for after my career, I have always wanted a family and to become an active philanthropist. Family has always been the very most important thing to me. My family comes first before everything, and I cannot wait to build a family of my own in the future. I also want to create some type of charity organization in the future. I have always had a passion for helping the less fortunate, and in the 10th grade, I even conducted research on how to build a charity organization. My resources were few and my time scarce, however, so I was unable to do it at the time, but I made it a long-term goal for the future. In addition to this, I also want to give monetary means in support of different causes. As of right now, I feel very strongly about medical research and about Vietnam – the country in which my roots lie. As I grow older, though, I am sure that I will discover many more causes that I would like to support. What I want to do most, though, is to continue volunteering wherever I can. Active service has always given me a sense of joy that nothing else has ever given me. Playing an active role in helping others and improving lives means more to me than any amount of money ever will, and I want to physically serve for this cause.Mục đích của em là theo học trường Y và trở thành một bác sĩ chuyên trị bệnh ung thư cho trẻ em. Bà của em qua đời vì bệnh ung thư trước khi em và 20 anh chị em họ của em ra đời, và cậu của em cũng chỉ còn một năm nữa để sống vì ông bị ưng thư phổi. Nhìn thấy ảnh hưởng mà bệnh ung thư gây ra cho cuộc đời của bệnh nhân và gia đình họ, em muốn cống hiến đời mình cho bệnh nhân và nghiên cứu về bệnh ung thư. Ngoài nghề nghiệp ra thì em còn muốn lập gia đình và trở thành một nhà từ thiện. Gia đình luôn là điều quan trọng nhất đối với em. Em luôn đặt gia đình lên hàng đầu. Trong tương lai, em còn muốn sáng lập ra một tổ chức từ thiện. Em luôn mong muốn được giúp đỡ những người bất hạnh hơn mình. Năm lớp 10, em nghiên cứu cách thành lập một tổ chức từ thiện. Vì em khôngcó nhiều tài lực và thời giờ, nên em không thể thành lập tổ chức ấy trong lúc này, nhưng em đã đặt nó làm mục đích cho tương lai. Ngoài ra, em còn muốn dùng tiền để hỗ trợ nhiều vấn đề khác nữa. Hiện tại, em nghĩ nhiều nhất đến việc nghiên cứu y học và nghĩ đến Việt Nam. Khi em lớn lên, em chắc là em sẽ còn nhiều thứ để đóng góp hơn nữa. Việc em muốn làm nhất bây giờ là tiếp tục tình nguyện làm việc ở mọi nơi em làm được. Phục vụ tha nhân luôn cho em niềm vui mà không việc gì khác có thể đem đến. Trực tiếp giúp đỡ và cải thiện đời sống của người khác có ý nghĩa với em hơn là tiền bạc, và em muốn cống hiến hết sức lực của mình cho việc này.

Special Thoughts/Cam Tưởng: I could not have done anything without the constant love and support of God and my family, especially of my parents. There isn’t enough thanks in the world for what I have been blessed with. I love you. Em không thể đạt được thành công ngày hôm nay nếu không có tình yêu và sự giúp đỡ của Thượng Đế và gia đình, đặc biệt là cha mẹ. Trên đời không có câu cảm ơn nào đủ cho những gì em may mắn có được.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: Mục đích tương lai của em là trở thành một bác sĩ nhi khoa thành công. Em hy vọng sẽ mở phòng mạch và làm việc với những người bạn cùng chí hướng như em. Em muốn nhóm của chúng em hoạt động hăng hái không những trong phòng mạch, mà cả trong cộng đồng địa phương và quốc tế. Most Significant Achievement/Thanh Công: The achievement I’m most proud of would be the “You’ve Made A Difference” Award in my PAL program. The award is given, based on peer rating, to the person whom the organization believe represents the ideals and values of the P.A.L. program the best. Through the P.A.L. program, I’ve worked with numerous kids, helping them through difficult times and listening to them when no one else would. For some, communication came with ease, but for others, it was frustrating trying to break through a wall that had been put up for years. Yet in these two years, I never expected to change anyone’s life or perspective. Toward the end of Senior year, my mentee contacted me to thank me for helping him and encouraging him. His words of validation along with my peers’ belief that I had made a difference has to be my most proudest achievement so far. The award affirmed that I was more than just a number in the educational system and more than just a title. It showed that I have achieved as a person rather than as a student - it showed me that the Life Point Average matters more than just the Grade Point Average.Giải thưởng mà em tự hào nhất là giải “Bạn Đã Tạo Được Sụ Khác Biệt” của chương trình PAL. Giải thưởng này được cấp phát cho người thể hiện được lý tưởng và tôn chỉ của PAL. Quan chương trình PAL, em đã có cơ hội sinh hoạt với rất nhiều thiếu niên, và lắng nghe các em trong khi các em không có ai để chia xẻ nguyện vọng mình. Trong những em này, một số đã diễn tả được ý muốn và những suy nghĩ của mình; nhưng với nhiều em khác, thật khó khăn để các em có thể phá vỡ chiếc vỏ ngày càng kiên cố hơn để cô lập mình với người chung quanh.Trong hai năm sinh hoạt với các em, em không nghĩ mình có thể thay đổi bất cứ em nào. Tuy nhiên, đến cuối năm lớp 12, một em đã liên lạc với em và cảm ơn em về những giúp đỡ và khích lệ em đã dành cho em ấy. Lời cảm ơn của em, cùng với sự tin tưởng của các bạn là em đã gây nên sự khác biệt theo chiều hướng tốt nơi người khác, đã mang đến niềm hãnh diện lớn lao cho em. Em rất vui mừng vì phần thưởng này đã khẳng định với em rằng các thành quả của em không phải chỉ đo lường bằng những con số trong hệ thống giáo dục. Vâng, giải thưởng này khiến em khám phá được rằng không những mình chỉ là một học sinh ưu tú mà còn là một con người, và số điểm của đời sống bao giờ cũng có ý nghĩa hơn số điểm trung bình đạt được nơi trường học.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: My short term goals include getting into med school while my long term goal is to become a surgical oncologist at M.D. Anderson. My ultimate goal is to start a pro bono foundation and offer services to the poor who cannot afford operations. Though the goal is difficult, I will strive to make my dream a reality someday in the future.Em hy vọng sẽ được nhận vào một trường đại học Y khoa và trở thành một bác sĩ giải phẫu chuyên trị bệnh ung thư tại bệnh viện MD Anderson. Goals/Mục Tiêu: I don’t have any concrete career goals as of yet, but I know I want to do something mean-ingful. I want to do something that actually makes a difference in the world, rather than pursue a career solely out of delusions of grandeur and fame, or for money. Something I can take pride in. Most Significant Achievement/Thanh Công: I’m not sure I have an answer for this question. I know I’ve accomplished things, but none really stand out at the moment. And while I certainly feel happy about all I’ve accomplished, I certainly hope that I will be able to achieve greater things in the future.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: I also don’t have any specific goals at the moment regarding a career specifically. I’m still exploring my options for the most part. Whatever I end up doing with my future, I hope that I will be able use my knowledge to make important contributions to society. For now though, I’m taking one step at a time. Phuơng Anh nói rằng mặc dù em đã đạt đươc nhiều thành tựu trong học tập nhưng những thành công đó vẫn chưa thật sự ấn tượng. Do vậy, em hi vọng mình sẽ làm được nhiều thứ co ý nghĩa và to lớn hơn trong tương lai. Most Significant Achievement/Thanh Công: I placed 5th in foreign extemporaneous speaking and 7th in student congress at this year’s Texas Forensic Association state tournament in Amarillo, Texas. At this tour-nament, over 500 of the state’s best speakers, actors, and debaters gather together to compete. Being a finalist among such talented people was an incredible honor and validation that my hard work was worthwhile.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: In summary, my life goal is to make a difference in people’s lives. I hope to receive Ph.D in mathematics and become a math professor so that I can pass on my knowledge and passion for math to others. I have been on mission trips to Ecuador multiple times, and would also like to continue working with needy communities in other areas of the world. We struggled and asked for donations for two years until we were finally able to establish a store called the Next Page Book Exchange for readers and students of all ages to enjoy! era Tran was born on April 22, 1982 in McKinney Texas to Mr. and Mrs. LamTran. She graduated Salutatorian from Michael DeBakey High School forHealth Professions in 2000. She was a VCSA Youth

Excellence Recognition Award Recipient in 2000, and joined VCSA afterwardsand became the Director of Social Services. Every summer, she met up withformer recipients to help organize the Youth Excellence Recognition Program. Shewas in her last year of studies at the University of Houston, Baylor-Houston Pre-Medical Academy, majoring in Biology, when the tragic accident occurred. On April15, 2003, one week before her 21st birthday, Vera tragically died in a car accidentthat occurred when an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign. Though we mourn theunfulfilled goals she had yet to achieve, we celebrate her enormous contributionsto our lives and her love for humanity.

Vera dedicated her life to community service. In the summer she would work in a nutrition research lab at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center. She wasalways a smiling, helpful and cheerful volunteer. The Children’s Nutrition ResearchCenter has since named an internship in her honor. Since November 2002, shewas involved with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Foundation-Student Global AIDSWalk Committee. She was the City Director (Fundraising, Marketing, Recruitment, Logistic planning) of the group of undergraduate students to coordinate a HoustonAIDS walk to benefit clinics in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In November2001 she helped to organize a Fund Raising Drive in Houston to raise funds forthe flood victims in Vietnam. She helped to raise more than $25,000 for the floodvictims in Vietnam. She also has been the initiator and leader of the “Meals for theHomeless” project every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday since 2001. Hersudden departure has greatly impacted so many people whose lives have beentouched by her.

Vera Tran was a role-model, an inspiration, and a friend to all who met her. Shefearlessly took on life armed with only love and compassion. Vera greeted everyone she met with a smile – a smile that could light up an entire room. Shehad an immaculate soul and a song in her heart. This is how Vera will beremembered by her family and friends, as well as the Vietnamese community atlarge.Her demise was a tragic loss that resonated throughout the community. In 2003,2000 VCSA Youth Excellence Recognition recipients Trang Pham and Huy Phamcreated the Vera Tran Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

With a generous donation from Vera’s father, and yearly contributions from Huyand Trang, we hope to continue this annual scholarship going.

The $2,000 scholarship recognizes a graduating student of Vietnamese descent, with an excellent academic record and atrack record of compassion and initiative in community service. The ideal candidate encompasses Vera’s twin commitments ofacademic excellence and community service.

About Nicholas C. LePham Nicholas ChiLinh LePham is a graduate of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts in

Political Science. Mr. LePham was born in Houston, TX, and spent his childhood there before moving abroad. However,he has always considered Houston his home and would like to give back to it, joining with most of his extended familythat lives there in being active members of the Vietnamese community. While studying in Boston, he’s been an activeleader within the Tufts Vietnamese Student Club and Tufts Democrats. He’s also a passionate political activist,whose past experience includes work on the Presidential campaign of US Senator John F. Kerry (MA) and theCongressional campaign of US Rep. Nick Lampson (TX-Sugar Land). Mr. LePham’s goals with the scholarship are thefollowing:

Mr. Anthony Nguyen Thanh Toan was always an avid supporter of education, taking inspiration from the dedicated work of his wife, Kim Yen Vu, a long time public school educator and currently a school principal with Alief ISD. Kim Yen Vu is also the current president of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Anthony, who passed away on July 22, 2011, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was an active member and long time supporter of VCSA.
