User Experience (UX) is• the way user feels about using a product, service or

system• based both on pragmatic and emotional aspects• subjective, dynamic and context dependent• evolving throughout the product or service life cycle• created by design that facilitates the conditions for UX

Why UX?• It provides a more profitable alternative for technology-

driven business and product or service development• Customers desire good experiences that products and

services can provide• By concentrating on UX, it is possible to make products

that satisfy users who are then more likely to accept them as part of their daily life

• UX is the basis for customer value perceptions• UX-based differentiation can bring a clear competitive

edge to companies • Investment in UX brings added value to business• In work context, a positive UX for the end users brings

work satisfaction, motivation, and more efficient work processes, which improve productivity inside the company

VTT’s UX-related offering

UX as a business factor• We have the competence in evaluating the potential of

organisations in UX-driven business: • Our experts can help in evaluating the current state and the challenges of UX-orientation and mindset in organizations. • This can be examined for instance by organising interviews both inside the organisation and at its stakeholders• Our experts can support the organisations in

their UX related renewal attempts also through workshops, pilots and new collaboration methods to enhance cooperation for instance between various organisational units

• We have the expertise in utilising user and customer understanding and service business logic as a basis for renewing business models

• We have experience in generating calculations about the impacts of positive UX

Designing for UX• We can help in understanding the desired

experiences of different customer groups • With Values in Experience (ViEX) methodology we can study customer and user values in a certain context. The values are further analysed and developed to persona descriptions with user experience targets• We can help in defining concrete and focused user

experience targets for work systems • UX targets can be defined with empathic domain and work analysis based on our Systems Usability and Core Task Analysis frameworks • VTT has also experience in interpreting the UX targets as design implications and functional requirements for different products.• We can visualise the interdependence of mental

impressions associated with the product of interest, as well as the correlation between mental impressions and samples studied through the Experience Mapping method.

• VTT’s experts provide various tools and methods to • evaluate UX through laboratory and field evaluations with users/customers, • benchmark the UX of competing products and • study long-term UX in Living Labs.

“In FIMECC UXUS programme, VTT’s researchers are supporting our efforts in improving internal communication about user experience by pro-viding new knowledge on our organisation’s current state. So far, we have gained useful information that will be utilised to strengthen the company-wide understanding of user experience and to enhance user experience oriented mindset. We have found these things essential when aiming to

boost our competitiveness through better user experience.”

Lasse Lehtonen, Manager, Concepts, Rocla Oy

“Starcut and VTT were studying users’ attitudes towards novel mobile advertisements in the NextMedia research programme. The user studies were made both in the field, in the shopping

mall, and also by using web questionnaire. The project provided us more in-depth information how potential users will accept these kind of novel mobile ads and also how to improve

usability and user experience of these kind of ads.”

Mikko Sairanen, Director, Services, Starcut Software Ltd

“We have studied with VTT the effects of variable paper properties on the mental impressions evoked by mag-azine-like printed products. The project provided us

more information about the feelings associated with print products, and also to some degree explanation of how

the mental impressions arise from the physical properties of the paper.”

Harri Kurppa, Sales Director, Stora Enso Printing and Reading

“VTT was our partner in the FIMECC UXUS research programme, where we designed an entirely novel user interface

concept for remote crane operation. The UX-driven concept development in this project was based on field studies and chosen UX targets, such as sense of control and feeling of

presence. The project provided us an innovative, yet practical concept for remote crane operation, which

aptly responds to its user needs and fits excellently to its context of use.”

Johannes Tarkiainen, Industrial Design Manager, Konecranes Oyj
